I'm deep in the middle of reading essays currently, and one thing that I find fascinating is how rapidly young people internalize changing language patterns from the internet.

This never would have happened even two years ago, but now in half the essays for my literature classes, the authors of stories are suddenly all they/them pronouns. 😂

Even when the students are introduced to the authors and correct gendered pronouns are clear from the lesson material (William Faulkner is not a she/her, we can safely assume), a majority of today's students are defaulting to "they" when referring to the author.

This, to me, indicates a fascinating shift, where "they" is the normalized default for all people with whom one isn't directly familiar (or perhaps just when one hasn't paid enough attention to fully remember the author lol).

Times are a'changin' indeed.

#irl stuff #at least it's a better trend #than forcing me to read “unalived” in a college essay #though I wish it stemmed from an actual intention #and not just such a complete lack of attention #that the students didn't even bother to note the author's gender #😂

idk if it’s just me but the whole “which atla kid in the gaang is the most mature” debates can get redundant and kind of exhausting at times. they’re kids. they’re multifaceted characters. they’re mature in some departments and immature in others. they have their strengths and weaknesses. also they’re kids lol.

#listen this is a probably a nothing burger lmao I’m just deep in my thoughts about what it means to be mature #because when talking about the cast what type of maturity are we focusing on yknow?#is it emotional maturity? spiritual maturity? social? maturity when taking up certain roles such as leadership?#and everyone has a different idea of what it means to be mature even in personality #take a comedic relief/goofy character for example #some may say this character is immature because of their goofy behavior #others might point out that being a jokester and taking the role of comedic relief doesn’t mean said character is immature #maybe my frustration just stems from people trying to assign parental roles to these tweens/teens lol #which I feel like can be an interesting conversation if we’re discussing #the traumas of losing a parent(s) at a young age and being forced to take up so much responsibility due to circumstances #but idk usually I see a lot of these conversations go sideways I guess #my conclusion #they’re just kids man they shouldn’t be fighting a war #they should be at the after school program #get aang to the computer lab now and make him a webkinz account #atla #text

listen. your english degree is intellectually stimulating but your hands are too soft, you know this as well as i do. i see how you look at the blue collar workers in their hi-vis and coveralls, wondering what they know about electricity that you don't. you can find out. get some dirt on your hands and learn how to bend the physical world to your will. textbooks feel better in callused hands, i promise.

Scientists near Chicago say they may be getting closer to discovering the existence of a new force of nature. They have found more evidence that sub-atomic particles, called muons, are not behaving in the way predicted by the current theory of sub-atomic physics. Scientists believe that an unknown force could be acting on the muons. More data will be needed to confirm these results, but if they are verified, it could mark the beginning of a revolution in physics. All of the forces we experience every day can be reduced to just four categories: gravity, electromagnetism, the strong force and the weak force. These four fundamental forces govern how all the objects and particles in the Universe interact with each other. The findings have been made at a US particle accelerator facility called Fermilab. They build on results announced in 2021 in which the Fermilab team first suggested the possibility of a fifth force of nature.
