anon ily pls dont die 💔 but don't worry, if i eventually come to the ultimate decision to deactivate, i'm going to archive all my works (but at the same time deactivating is a low chance, it'll only happen if i'm really at my lowest point). i'm so glad that people become as emotional to my writing as i am with it too 🥹 tho don't worry guys, i have no intentions of discontinuing again & again. it just takes a lot of time for me to motivate myself to write something i'm really, really passionate about.

DPXDC Prompt #58 Part 3

Gotham Academy High School was the sort of school where almost everyone was elite in some way or another. Some of them were from old money like Damian who held himself up to a very high standard in his academics and was the top of the class. Others from new money like Dash and the rest of his cohorts became very hateful of somebody like Danny who was given a scholarship by Bruce Wayne, in their eyes Danny was taking advantage of Damian not even knowing that Damian approached Danny for companionship two years ago.

This also meant that everyone including the teachers would compare Danny and Damian to each other even though they weren’t brothers. That didn’t matter though as Danny was associated with them so that was all the reason they needed.

Danny groaned as he sunk into the seat next to Damian. The lunchroom was filled with chatting students and Danny was glad he shared the next class with Damian, which happened to be English. Dash never bothered Danny when Damian was around, probably because Damian had threatened the jock. How he was threatened Danny didn’t know, Damian never told him what happened and he was a little scared to ask. 

The guy hadn’t stopped harassing Danny since he and Jazz transferred a couple years ago. The school year had barely begun and Dash had made Danny his primary target like he was making up for lost time over the summer. Danny sighed as he dropped his paper bagged lunch on the table with a little plop. Jazz had packed for him this morning hopefully before his parents arrived and contaminated the entire kitchen.

“Dash again?” his sister asked across the table, she was seated next to Tim.

“I was paired against him in dodgeball again,” Danny lamented, his head resting on his arms that were crossed on the table.

“Danny, could you just talk to Mr. Lancer or something?” Jazz asked before she took a bite from her sandwich.

Danny sighed again and unpacked his lunch, “I have but no one will listen! They all act like I’m lying or something.” The teachers at this school probably wouldn’t listen to a charity case like him. Dash was a football player and had plans to become captain of the team. Everyone at the school loved Dash and it was precisely why everyone except maybe the four students at the table they were seated looked down and sometimes even bullied Danny.

Danny ignored it all eventually, it was better just to let the jock tire himself out. 

Once Danny and Damian finished eating they made their way to English. Luckily it was easy to carry the material for a class that only required a small binder and whatever book they were reading, in this case it was ‘gone with the wind’. Danny didn’t really care about reading old literature like this but he did what he had to maintain the grades he had. He’d endure anything, even Dash’s bullying, to become an astronaut.

Danny could hardly concentrate today through his afternoon classes. For some reason he had a bad feeling that something was going to happen. He tried his best to ignore it, he was probably just tired or something. Soon the school day was out and Danny packed up whatever homework he had for the day and headed outside to wait with Jazz. Damian and Tim were probably wrapping up their classes. Tim had an AP class that ran an extra 30 minutes and Damian’s last class was art, they were doing a painting and it wasn’t unusual for Damian to finish up what he was working on as he found out over the last few years that he enjoyed painting.

“… Do you think it’ll work?” Jazz asked a hint of hesitation in her voice. Danny knew she was talking about the portal, the both of them had talked about it before. Danny glanced over at his sister, he could tell she was having trouble sleeping lately, her face looked tired and her posture was stiff with her arms crossed in front of her. Both of them had anxiety about the possibilities the portal possessed, and they were especially worried that their parents wouldn’t take it well if the portal didn’t work. 

He was equally concerned that it would work. “I hope not…” he said eventually. It was something that brought the siblings closer as the whole of their family fell apart. How their parents managed to pull off getting the funding in the first place seemed to be a miracle. Everyone called their parents crazy and dismissed all of their science as ludicrous garbage.

Danny wondered how they even managed to stay under Batman's radar, he thought that something like this would be cause for the vigilante to look into it but maybe the thought of ghosts was just that outlandish that even the dark knight himself thought it to be crazy too. Danny himself didn’t believe in anything his parents published, some of the papers even seemed to be biased somehow, even though his parents hadn’t ever actually encountered a ghost. That last part was probably the reason no one bothered to actually investigate his parents, there wasn’t really much to investigate.

The siblings waited in silence and eventually Tim and Damian showed up after their classes and the four headed to Alfred waiting by the car. 

If anyone tried to start a conversation with Danny he wasn’t paying attention. If he was being honest, his parents' portal scared him a lot. He wasn’t sure why he felt so nervous about it, both him and Jazz renounced the thought that ghosts could exist. Something deep down in his guts told him that he should turn and run, that what his parents were attempting was taboo and that his parents were tampering with forces unimaginable. 

No one was going to listen to a fourteen year old though so Danny kept his feelings to himself and ignored them. 

Soon they were pulled in front of their apartment and true to their word, Damian and Tim asked Alfred to park nearby. Danny and Jazz took a hesitant glance at each other as they walked into the house.

Reading a fic that's so well written I wish I could close my eyes and just let the descriptions and atmosphere wash over me, but the dilemma with closing my eyes is, well, I then would not be able to continue reading this fic, now would I.

hi i'm doing okay :-) i'm still working on the next chapter! it's just a complex chapter so it's taking me a while. lots of dialogue, which personally takes me a lot of time to perfect, plus the romance routes will lock in this chapter, which are quite complicated due to all of the possible poly variations.

i'm also currently working on my other project (northern passage) which kinda has priority at the moment since it's been over a year since i've updated it. still writing, just slow :3

I love your wobbly hearts AU but the thought has been haunting me of Kai having dyscalcula in the show canon except he doesn't know so much, what's wrong about that. Because Nya and him would've been working together to run the blacksmith shop and she could've handled numbers.

Therefore I hand you the nice of him needing help and calling over Zane to ask if he can read something for him, or his friends reading aloud important letters relating to things they get up to in their ninja business.

Just... Him having friends and them casually supporting him because it didn't come up until AFTER they got Nya back and they had to read books for something or other. And then Jay Cole and Zane could ask her why Kai always goes to her about reading/writing things and she could tell them that he's "never been good at it" so she helps him with it and then they start helping too when they can and. well.

It's just a thought that makes me mushy inside and helps me cope with the extreme angst (like holy SHIT the latest chapters of Wobbly Hearts, OW) of your Fic. I am soft for characters helping eachother <3

Does hels have any classic nether creatures and have they ever caused trouble for the city before? (Imagining a group of combat savvy helsmets fighting off a swarm of blazes that have breached past the outskirts. Or on the flipside, nether mobs being used in colosseum matches or treated like domestic/wild animals with Zoglins/Withers being high priced sponsored matches and striders hanging out wherever there's a little corner of lava a la city pigeons.)

Hels does have classic nether creatures flitting around! I think I've only really mentioned ghasts in the plot, but I imagine outside of the main city, piglins and zombie piglins have their own little societies, and that helsmets will travel outside the main hels city to explore or trade with them. Blazes are definitely a pest that sometimes wander in, as are endermen. Zombie piglins are probably gently herded away from the city by people who live on the outskirts, like trying to subtly lead your annoying, sleep walking neighbor home whenever they wander into your yard. [Also the idea of Striders as basically giant land pigeons is adorable to me oh my gosh.]

There was also a subplot I dropped, where the Demon, among his many faults, was in charge of the mob switch for hels, and kept a pit full of piglins in horrible conditions underneath his base. The subplot got dropped because it involved a side character [unnamed because he will still make an appearance, just not in nearly as intense as a capacity as before] who I thought would benefit from having a background crusade vaguely hinted at to make the world feel a little more full. "Sure the Main Plot is our concern, but there is a main character doing his own main character shenanigans in the background if you squint hard enough," kind of energy. Ultimately though, I decided I liked the Demon as an antagonist for more relatable reasons than "is also secretly an asshole to the arguably sentient mobs", and also the aforementioned, unmentioned side character doesn't need an implied rich world. Hels feels decently alive without the extra implication.

On the note of mobs though, a la the Roman Colosseum, I do think the Hels Colosseum hosts animal/beast/monster based events, and since you sent this ask at a time it was weirdly relevant, have an out of context snippet from the next chapter below the cut:

“I had a match once, where they asked me to fight a sound of hoglins.” Helsknight said tiredly, balling a fist in his blankets at the memory. “It was before I was Champion… I had never fought animals before. I didn't see the harm in it then.” Helsknight paused, swallowed, and said quietly. “I didn't like it. Animals don't have any concept of courage, or glory, or fighting for a cause. They only know hunger, and the fear of dying, and the promise of a handler who leaves them to their fate after they're trained. It's cruel.”

Tanguish didn't know what to say, so he nodded. Then, realizing Helsknight couldn't see the nod because his arm was still over his eyes, he said, “That sounds terrible.”

“It sucked.” Helsknight agreed.

how do you have the time to write all this stuff /and/ play video games etc etc at the same time? Is it just that you write insanely fast after all these years? I have a lot of hobbies, writing being one of them, and i have such a hard time juggling them lol.

So, real talk -> The reality is I don't have the time to write and play video games at the same time most of the time.

I haven't written anything since the 17th. I haven't started the next Palmarosa chapter. I'm on day 8 of not having opened a new document and writing anything.

I've edited a whole two chapters (which I suspect I have to go over again) and I've responded to some comments and asks, and that's it. No writing, no growing wordcount, I've been stagnating / not doing anything due to burnout since the 17th (I know the date because I have a giant whiteboard of completed chapters next to me).

Honestly, most of the time I don't actually have the time to read, play video games, watch television, or movies. I am too busy writing/editing/sleeping. With Toby in the mix, the small amount of media I was consuming has vanished.

Sometimes I can play certain video games while writing - these are usually low stakes video games I can endlessly put on pause and then play for five minutes at a time, like Dorfromantik and Garden Galaxy. Any kind of idler video game, like Havendock is also good for this.

Anon, you can't have a lot of hobbies and actually keep up with them and write the way I do, and therapist/s wouldn't recommend you drop all of your hobbies to write the way I do anyway. Trust me.

I had two things I wanted to start learning this year, and I haven't started learning them yet. I don't have the capacity. I had a therapist gently point out to me that if I was always at 100 in terms of output, how can I have any energy leftover for self-work and processing? The answer is: I don't. (That's actually why I've spent a week playing video games, and if anything it's just reminded me that my capacity is still at 100 and this is going to take a bit of concerted decompression).

Most of the time it's not normally quite this overwhelming. Toby has just maxed me out because he's a high energy dog who is also a puppy with Separation Anxiety, and there's no quick or easy fix for that. But most of the time it's still very intense. The list of shows I really want to watch, and books I really want to read, is very long. But I often don't have time to indulge in those things because I'm too busy writing.

A lot of the time I don't actually have the time to reread my own fics anymore, outside of editing.

This year was meant to kind of tackle that more decisively but you know then we got a puppy so... not so much.

But yeah anon, there is no 'how do you do this and do this' - you don't do one of those things, or you do it very haphazardly, in small amounts.

I do write very fast (my wordcount is 120-150wpm), but I don't edit fast (I'd tender that editing fast for most people is a bit of an oxymoron), I don't answer asks fast (some of the longer ones take me an hour to compose), etc. And even then, writing fast is not the same as the time it takes to think out the chapter, to figure out what's happening, letting it percolate etc. A lot of my life is also just resting. I lose about 2-5 hours of every afternoon to sleep or rest for example, where nothing productive happens. And I think one of the reasons I read so many manwha atm is that they're so easy to read comparatively, and so quick, and that's the only way I can really consume stories these days.
