35. Unforeseen

He saw his death coming. Perhaps this was what made him lucky on his last few days of living: to allow himself the preparation for the death to come…or maybe there was more to it than that.

Ion was a kind kid. And a self-aware one. He knew of the people’s views on the Sunchildren — knew that they would not take kindly to him. He knew of the Jibashiri’s reluctance towards him after facing the failures of Risutaiosu and then Surepio after, and it all weighed upon him. 

He must have wondered: what could I do better for my people? What could I do that the other Sunchildren failed to do? It was a feat too much for a child like him, but he took it all the same in a way that a child would. 

Ion was a skilled fortuneteller, or he claimed to be before his people, and people had their doubts at first — the same way they had doubted Surepio’s capabilities of tending to their wounds. 

But Ion insisted, and he’d tell their fortunes, staring into the scry glass he had, waiting and waiting until it felt like time had frozen over him — that was when you knew that their fate had been revealed to him. And he’d take a few seconds more before a smile pushed its way across his face, and he’d gaze at the person and tell them, “There is good fortune ahead of you.” 

Ion would say more than just that: he’d sprinkle in how it’d come to them, what to do to curry the fortune all the more, and what to avoid, and at the end of it, he would give the person a handcrafted sigil, made the night prior in his quarters. 

People did like good fortunes. People enjoyed hearing good things for themselves, and therefore, they would become piqued by his fortunes. More and more people would come, and more and more fortunes would be told, and Ion would not reject any one person from a good fortune. 

Perhaps we should have suspected it sooner, but we had never seen the people so happy when they interacted with the Sunchild. And so the fortunes stayed, and the sigils with them. 

But soon enough, fate would bring these fortunes to light — the false fortunes to light, and in the face of these misfortunes, he would become a victim of his own making. 

Ion was — that was how he could predict his own death. Whatever he had truly seen in the scry glass, it must not have been good for anyone if he had chosen to lie for their sake — not wanting to tell of their doom or the tragedy that would play out. 

Our leader was a liar, but Ion was a kind kid. 

The Solar Rite came, and his people couldn’t wait for the start of a new reign.  The son returned to his father, and his people built a grave to honor Ion no Mikoto's name. 

I wonder: Was he loved in the end? 

He couldn’t be worse than those children of the past, gifting things instead of destroying them, giving hope instead of crushing it. 

The rejections of these sigils he gifted say otherwise. The anger these adults would unleash against their leader — a child, no less — would say otherwise. They build this shrine to Ion no Mikoto, at the edge of Byakuyakoku, and lay the remnant of their former leader with it like they wash their hands of any relation to him. 

But when he offered them these sigils and dreams of a bright future, there was love in the eyes of people — something that no other Sunchild would ever face. When people came to visit, seeking out more fortunetelling and he gave them happier things to hope for, there was love there. Despite the results of his short-acting kindness — despite the cruelty of his final days — wouldn’t these joyful moments be considered love? 

Was he loved in the end? No, but I like to think he was, even for a brief moment. And maybe in future generations to come, the brevity of this love will echo in time, and they will see these rejections as gifts to a leader they had once adored. 

That is all I could hope for for Ion. 

I place my own sigil beside his grave.

The greatest thing about Genshin is that the lore is so freaking dark in so many ways, and it really helps me with various ideas of how I do world-building now.

Especially with all the horrific ways that children are:

•Abused

•Sacrificed

•Traumatized

• or all of the above but ALSO being stuck in a time loop for at least a thousand years replaying the same four days again and again and again because it got cursed by an angry bird ON TOP of the entire island’s memory network getting screwed over by a cosmic nail falling from the sky

AND SOMEHOW, SOME HAVE SIMILARITIES WITH OUR CURRENT ARCHONS!!! Orupeusu had a talent for the lyre, aka the Anemo Archon. Risutaiosu made lifelike sculptures, like the Electro Archon. And Isumenasu would roam his country, AND EVEN HAD A SPEAR LIKE THE GEO ARCHON AT HIS GRAVE!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA I AM A GENIUS ”

Each Region's Dragons & Archons

So it's no secret that the Dragons of Teyvat used to hold sovereignty over the word before the rise of the Archons. As a result of that, some relationships between the Archons and their designated dragons are either amicable, nonexistent, or hostile. This post is a refresher and then delves into some of my theories on Focalors's relationship with Neuvillette based on the Fontaine trailer seeing as it's been revealed (leaked) that Neuvillette is the Hydro Dragon!

Monstadt - Dvalin & Venti

Their relationship was strained because Dvalin feared being forgotten into obscurity. He felt a deep betrayal at the lack of acknowledgement on his behalf by the people of Monstadt and therefore fell prey to the *Abyss Order's schemes.

Venti, however, considers Dvalin a friend, one he cares about dearly. He would go through hell and back to make sure the dragon is okay and that they're on the same page about things. Very obvious seeing as he did throughout the very first Archon Quest.

Relationship overall: Deep trust and friendship

Liyue - Azhdaha & Zhongli

Azhdaha was initially buried deep in the bedrock beneath Liyue, with a soul that spoke out to Rex Lapis, so much so that Rex unveiled him from the deep layers of rock and fulfilled his wish to see the world.

Rex Lapis carved out Azhdaha's form into a great dragon and blessed him with eyes. The two explored Teyvat together and fought together. They were great, dear friends. They had made a contract that should Azhdaha bring havoc to order in Liyue, he would be sealed away once again.

They were so close that Azhdaha was the only one who could call Rex Lapis 'Morax' with fondness

The passage of time brings about the erosion of time, and Azhdaha was not immune. As a result of the erosion, Azhdaha forgot about his contract with Rex Lapis and with the overexploitation of The Chasm by the people of Liyue, his condition worsened and he broke the contract, forcing Rex to intervene and seal him away.

In Zhongli's story quest, he re-seals Azhdaha and is himself moved by the bittersweet goodbye he has to say to him until they meet again someday.

Relationship overall: Bittersweet friends

Inazuma - Orobashi & Ei

Essentially, Orobashi is the reason Enkanomiya and Watatsumi Island exist

Initially Orobashi fled to the depths of Enkanomiya to flee the rule of Teyvat after being unable to defeat Ei or the "golden god" (assumed to be Rex)

An explorer happened upon Orobashi and asked it to be a god and it did, ending the rule of the Sunchildren (puppet rulers) and reducing the threat of  Bathysmal Vishaps

The people of Enkanomiya then co-worshipped Orobashi because of this

Orobashi was preparing for them to resurface to Inzauma, however it happened upon a book that detailed a history of Teyvat that Celestia intended to be buried

Orobashi sacrificed parts of its body to create Watatsumi island and also

Because of this forbidden knowledge Orobashi and Watatsumi Island were found guilty of profanity and deceiving living souls

Orobashi took all the transgressions upon himself and was slain by Ei while Watatsumi Island was taken back under the rule of Celestia

Relationship overall: Hostile/Nonexistent

Sumeru - Apep & Nahida (and Rukkhadevata)

Apep despises the Archons and humanity because they rely on Celestia for their power

Originially, Apep claimed Sumeru as its domain

Apep, along with the other dragons of old, fought against the Heavenly Principles for the right to rule over Teyvat. They lost and thus, power over Sumeru was given to King Deshret and Rukkhadevata.

Because King Deshret was essentially the cause of the forbidden knowledge spread, Apep also got corrupted by it as a result, which further amplified her disdain for Celestia, the Archons, and humanity

However, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata had actually created a backup plan to help save Apep by concentrating her elemental energy into Fire Seeds, she didn't get to use them herself though (rip)

In Nahida's second story quest she attempts to reason with Apep and eventually the two reach an agreement that Nahida can help her (basically Nahida's a sweetheart and proved she would do anything to save Apep, including sacrifice herself)

Apep still harbors disdain for the Heavenly Principles but sees no reason to wipe out the Archons or humanity, she decides to simply watch and see how far things go

Relationship overall: Tolerable

Fontaine - Neuvillette & Focalors (Theories)

Based on the trailer I am certain of one thing: these two have a deal of some sort that allows Neuvillette to retain a semblance of jurisdiction over Fontaine while also maintaining Focalors's ultimate power

According to the Genshin Impact Wiki: "A prophecy in Enkanomiya claims that a new Dragon of Water will be born in human form, as these dragon-lords require a "pure" vessel and the Bathysmal Vishaps, originally Hydro, had become "impure" when they evolved to harness the powers of Electro and Cryo", so my guess is he's a descendant or reincarnation of the Dragon of Water that was born shortly after the Archon War.

These two have entirely different temperaments. While Neuvillette is a stickler for law and order, opting to rule with an iron thumb in court, Focalors thrives on chaos, craves it even. This could actually lead to a clash or twist in Fontaine.

Neuvillette is still subservient to Focalors as a result of their agreement.

It's very possible that Arlecchino will play the role of whispering ideas into Neuvillette's ear, causing him to consider trying to defeat Focalors and take jurisdiction himself OR

He could actually consider Focalors a formidable foe that he respects and instead fools the Fatui into thinking that they've got him under their thumb only to use that against them to help Focalors keep her Gnosis?

IDK man I'm sensing a double edged sword kinda relationship with these two, we'll see!

there's a piece i want to write eventually. when my brainrot comes back and kicks me, but I think it works better visually (like if you look at the text altogether than looking at the words)

the idea was having a constant statement that serves as the "grounding" statement for the character - something the character comes back to as the following paragraphs get longer and longer - messier and messier - replicating both panic and mess that the character feels

until it resets with the statement.

and then it rebuilds and rebuilds again

then i thought also about like. at some point the character wont have that "grounding" technique anymore so the paragraphs get longer and longer and there's just no stop. run on sentences and garbled mess until it just ends abruptly

but idk i cant execute that lmao it's prettier in my head as a concept and i don't want to disappoint the character

My parentage is changing.

A fanfic of my own character that kinda goes into the lore of my character, altering the story to where they have multiple personalities inspired by the schizophrenic episodes of the Greco-Roman gods (and ofc @bright-side-of-the-moon)

Chapter 1: Will loses track of a patient.

IT WAS A DAY LIKE NO OTHER.

I was doing rounds- checking I was stocked on bandages, my list of patients with allergens, my medicine was stocked, I had plenty nectar and ambrosia, watering my sunflower given to me as a welcome gift by Will Solace when I got claimed, playing my morning playlist of Conan Gray, Olivia Rodrigo, Em Beihold, Claire Rosinkranz, Camilla Cabello- the usual.

Until I get interrupted by a knock on my office door.

I stop playing my music and head to the door, opening it with slight annoyance.

"Yeah? Who is it-"

"Hey, sorry Jacks, I know you're doing rounds but... we have a medical emergency in cabin 3," The person said. It was my freckled, suntanned, tall, blond brother. Will Solace. He was never good at telling me when there was medical emergencies. Especially during the morning.

"I can't help them," I sigh. "I was just about to reorganize my files in alphabetical order again-"

"Well- I- uhh- As Head Counselor slash Medic, I demand you go check on your patient!" He said, puffing out his chest and pointing a finger in the air.

I just stared at him for a while.

"It's been a week and you're pulling that card on me?"

"Just go down-"

"No."

"Pleeeease?"

"Hmm.... no."

"I'll give you unlimited access to all patient files."

"Where's the camper?" I throw on my lab coat.

"New that would getcha."

"I need blackmail on the Stoll brothers, I take wins where I can get them." *I adjust something slightly out of place on my coat then walk past Will.

Will shrugs. "Fair enough."

We walk towards the strawberry fields, making small talk on the way. You know, the usual.

"How many people died last week?" I ask nonchalantly, as if death doesn't bother me anymore.

"Surprisingly, one," Will says while stepping over a mushroom that looked like it was on the verge of exploding. "He fell off of the rock climbing wall."

"Was he drunk?"

"Nope."

"Was he wearing any safety gear?"

"Also, nope."

"Well no duh, it's written on a giant sign to wear the proper equipment with supervision if you want to climb on the wall," I hop over a loose root in the ground. "It's literally the number one rule."

"It was an Ares kid."

"Okay, that makes much more sense."

We make it to the fields, with no one to be seen. Nobody. Anywhere, no matter where you looked. Not a single Satyr, bug, or demigod.

"Uh... Will?" I turn to him and bat my eyes. "Where's. The. Damn. Patient."

"How should I know?!"

"YOU'RE THE HEAD MEDIC. THAT'S YOUR JOB."

"NUH-UH- wait, no. You actually have a point. Am I gonna get fired?" Will was panicking, I was pissed, and we have a missing (probably dying, let's be honest) patient that's nowhere to be seen. "Oh gods, what do I tell Nico?!-"

"Calm down. You find that patient, before Chiron and Mr. D have your practicing license for a month. I'll go ask any nearby campers if they seen anyone..." I pause for a moment. "What did you say this patient looked like again?"

"I- uh.... Girl, very pretty, smelled like-"

"Let me remind you, you have a boyfriend that I know very well."

"Shut up," Will's face taking on the same hue of the strawberry milk served at lunch. "As I was saying, she was a daughter of Aphrodite. She was supposedly having a heat stroke-"

"Why would a child of Aphrodite be all the way out here in the Strawberry fields?" I interrupt. "Sorry, my bad. Please continue."

"-That caused her to pass out," Will continued, albeit, very annoyed. "She was saying something about needing water, and a Cabin Three kid went to the lake to purify some water for her to drink."

"That all?"

"No, she passed out and... well... You know the story from there."

I hum in thought. Being the gremlin I am, I walk away back to my office. "If she's not here, that means she's okay, or someone else os already treating her. Now about those medical documents-"

"What." Will said incredulously. "Not even gonna look for her?- What if there's a dead camper on my hands, and you just walk away?"

I nod. "Pretty much, yeah."

Will stares at me, dumbfounded and slowly getting more and more pissed off. "You're a terrible medic."

"If there's no patient to treat, there's no problem to meet." Ignoring Will's comment, I continue walking away. "I need to finish my rounds."

"You're fired."

I stop dead in my tracks, slowly turning around. "What?"

"You. Are. Fired"

"Y-you can't fire me?!" I walk up to him. "Only-"

"I don't care. Go to the Hermes cabin. And stay there. You're license is officially revoked."

"W-what..." I mumble, terrified. "Y-you can't do this to me- you're taking away my entire purpose-"

"That's the point," He folded his arms, towering over me, the damn Texan. "Get out my damn sight before I do something I regret."

"B-but my documents... My parients- You- you can't do this to me!"

"You are dismissed."

I felt the tension build up in my chest. My grip on my reality slipping away. The tears welling up in my eyes, burning hotter than any of the forges in Cabin 9. My breath became warm, my throat closing up and becoming dry as the tears fall off of my cheeks like rain. My nose and cheeks redder than any strawberry in the field.

I grip onto Will's shirt, falling to my knees and crying into Will's shirt. "P-please W-Will.... D-don't do this...." I sob.

"You have till the Harpies come out to move." Will said coldly, walking past me. Muttering and mumbling to himself to calm himself down as I slowly fall to the floor. Curling into a ball and clutching my stomach as my tears turn the dirt underneath my face slowly turning to mud with my tears.

So that was chapter 1 !!
