I've hesitated to make this post bc I feel like ppl are inevitably going to misinterpret what I have to say as defending AI writing, but there's something abt the conversation abt AI written fanfic that rubs me the wrong way.
(and let me get ahead of the willful misinterpretations now, using AI in its current form to write fanfic is bad. atm AI is trained using works taken without permission or credit so using it is unethical)
but like I've seen a bunch of posts in the vein of like "why would I read something you couldn't be bothered to write?" and similar sentiments. and it's like. fandom is notoriously shitty & unfair to writers. despite fanfic being considered a staple of online fandom, "bad" fanfic is regularly made fun of, writers' depictions of characters are openly mocked & criticized, any fanfic that doesn't depict Popular M/M ship gets almost no engagement. and even Popular M/M fic gets very little active interaction compared to the number of people that read it. Even the most popular fanfics are lucky to break into double digit reblogs on Tumblr.
Y'all brag about reporting authors for linking their damned ko-fi or mentioning a work was commissioned. yes, I'm aware it's against AO3's TOS, but I think it's super fucked that the vast majority of users accept & uphold that policy instead of defending the labor & effort writers put into their work. blah blah blah Anne Rice legal disputes blah blah, they're selling fucking BNHA keychains on Etsy. Times have changed and there's no reason imo that an author who doesn't take commissions shouldn't be able to link a god damned tip jar. It's against AO3's TOS, but they also have no incentive to change it bc y'all think someone getting a tip for a fic they poured weeks of effort into is somehow more of a threat to fandom than all of Redbubble.
like imo it just speaks to a community wide disrespect for the work & expertise that goes into writing fic & a sense of entitlement to author's labor. like people get genuinely pissed off at the idea of fanfic authors making money off their work, even when it's not commissions. I've seen ppl accuse authors that host paid workshops of thinking they're better than everyone else. why is recognizing the value of MY effort & expertise gained from years of work seen as a commentary on my opinion of other creators?
I got off topic. but my point is everyone leaps out of the woodwork to talk abt the sanctity of the creative process when it comes to AI fanfic, but y'all (fandom as a whole) won't defend authors' ability to make money from their work, you won't show your appreciation by commenting or reblogging their fics, and you routinely mock authors & the tropes they use behind their back. instead of respecting new authors who are still learning their craft, you get annoyed that "bad" fic is clogging your feed.
part of me feels like the actual objection to AI fic isn't because people care about authors, it's because people are annoyed that they have to scroll 100 more pixels to find a fic that meets their standards.
#for the record i have no interest in monetizing my work#and i dont have a tip jar bc i dont need the money#and id rather it go to an author who is trying to make a living#but the way ppl talk about writers on this website pisses me off

Hiiii! i love ur writing and was wondering if u could do Tommy, Quackity, Niki, Charlie, and Philza with an s/o (close friend for Phil) who is in a riot grrrl band???
stuff like this:
HAVE A NICE DAY/MORNING/NIGHT:]]]
oooo okay!! I can definitely try! I don't listen to many riot bands so excuse any weird stuff that doesn't totally make sense ; have a nice day/night to you too 🫶🫶🫶 ; made sure to make this as gn as possible for everyone so I apologize if it goes against the more feminine aspect of the genre/kinda ruins it 🙏
MCYT ; riot band
includes ; tommyinnit, quackity, nihachu, slimecicle, & philza
warnings ; language
y/b/n = your band name
y/f/n = your fandom name
masterlist
TOMMYINNIT
he loves your music
you're the heaviest band he listens to 🙏🙏 he does try and get into the genre more because he does actually enjoy your music
you're the lead singer for your band, so every time he hears your vocals, he gets all smiley, even in public, which he tries to hide
will make sure to attend every single one of your gigs and record the whole thing LMAO
if he's like the perfect distance away from the stage, you'll sneakily look at him to help your nerves and make it feel like he's the only one in the room
he helps you write lyrics as well/get inspo for new songs
"and it goes in a rythym like ba-dada-bum-ba-dada-bum, yknow?"
extra points if your band sounds a lot like Hole or Veruca Salt, bc he'd definitely have some of their songs on a playlist
casually your biggest fan, always reposting gig dates and playing your music on stream
leaving comments under picture posts on the band insta like "come back to brighton for my birthday please, I beg" and "its to early to be served perfection, wait a few hours :("
he doesn't always make sense but he's loving and absolutely loves your music dw
NIKI NIHACHU
she is the number one fan
she got your bands top listener and has over 15k minutes of listening time by the end of the year
you're lead guitar, so she's always interested in watching you play and how you move your hands and fingers to create such a cool sound
extra bonus points if your band uses that kind of echoey down to your soul feel, kinda like suicideboys or lil peep (best examples I got bc I'm not into this genre very much lmao)
always bringing you up in conversation as well
if anyone's looking for bands to listen to, you're a million percent the first she suggests
you show her new chords you wanna use or expand on and she just watches and listens so intently
always playing your music on chill streams and recommending her viewers to listen to your band, and always points out that its you playing lead guitar
"personally, I think you should be winning a Grammy this year"
"ehhh... MTV awards are better"
"I'm gonna go get you nominated for the MTV awards then, I'll be back"
"I don't think that's how it works!-"
ALEX QUACKITY
he mostly listens to stuff like victoria monet, the weeknd, childish gambino, sza, etc
but being dragged into the rabbit hole of riot bands expanded his music taste a lotttt
you're the lead singer of course (main character hours)
yk the clip of him on the qsmp and metro boomin randomly starts playing? that happens but with your band!
"whoops- I-I have no idea why the hell that started playing, sorry! the last thing I was listening to wasn't even y/b/n, the fuck?"
he gets all his close friends hooked on your music as well
bonus points if you get a more grunge kinda feel in there like foo fighters or nirvana
always posting pics of you from gigs or reposting pics of you/your band
and always leaving comments like "vocal lessons when?" and "gig near you ✅️ gig near me ❌️"
always roasting your music as a joke as well
"the blueprint 3, one album, solos y/b/n. sorry y/n"
"must I bring up-"
"nope!"
CHARLIE SLIMECICLE
he looks like the type of guy to secretly have a 200 song long playlist of punk music idk
you're the bassist, and he loves making you play shit on stream for him lmao
also loves reposting anything relating to you and your band, fanart, random rants about your music, gig dates, new music release dates, photos, etc
don't get him started on the edits
he'll randomly blurt out random noises and rythyms and boom, writers block gone, new song? made.
serious bonus points if you sound the slightest bit like joey valance & brae
you show him how to play bass a bit as well
always recording every gig, he's so proud of you, plus the lights make you look so good
always talking about you as well
"my partner is a bassist in a band, I think they solo all of you losers"
"Charlie what?? when were we talking about significant others?"
"since I said so, bitch!"
cue video game car crash
he has a little thing in the bottom of the stream screen with the album cover w a spinning record next to it, and on top is the song & band name. 80% of the time it's just your band
^he uses that during his stream starting soon segments, bathroom/snack breaks, or chill streams on the qsmp
PHILZA
he and kristen both love your music
he sees you like his kid so he's going the extra mile to support you all the time
from streaming your music in the car to reposting and posting about gig dates, new music and merch drops, etc etc
you even have your own little section in his Discord titled 'y/b/n chat' (and another for announcements about your band/notifs OK social media titled 'y/b/n announcements')
when spotify wrapped comes around, your his third most listened to artist, and kristen's second LMAO
"aweee thank you father, I appreciate your loyalty to y/f/n and the band 🫶"
always bringing up your music as well, especially when streaming with friends
"Tommy, did you listen to y/b/n's new song yet? I think you'd like it"
"wait wait hold on lemme pull it up"
he goes to a few of your gigs with kristen and he's just chilling in the back like a proud parent
you always find him and smile because he's there cheering you on
he's more of a dad than your actual dad bro

Hopping back online to share a Charlie and Mammon headcanon.
Now, I know the out of universe reason why the Loo Loo Land jingle contains “I have a dream/I’m here to tell” was a case of VA shenanigans that Viv decided to put in the show, but I had a neat idea for the in-universe reason why.
Basically, my idea is that the verse originated from when Charlie was pretty young and first getting into music. Naturally, her entire family were very supportive of this interest and eager to share their musical tastes and knowledge with her, with them eventually setting up a sort of rotation wherein Lucifer, Lilith and the Sins took turns giving her music lessons. One fateful lesson with Mammon on how to properly rock out led to him helping her brainstorm her own lyrics and melodies for the first time. After a lot of trial and error between Charlie’s inexperience and Mammon’s tendency to just riff on the works of others, the two came up with the iconic line and melody… without writing any other lyrics or harmonies to go with it. Mammon would eventually figure out a use for it, and while he will swear up and down that its just to promote his crappy amusement park, it’s really a way to keep that memory alive and going while sharing it with others… for a price, naturally.
Continuing from the above, Mammon has rather mixed feelings regarding Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow. On the one hand, he’s overjoyed that his niece has taken something he helped her to create and used it to voice her dreams and convictions with every ounce of passion in her body. On the other hand, he (and likely the other Sins as well) isn’t that enthused about her ideas for rehabilitation given how it could affect the propagation of the sin he embodies. On the other, other hand, he can’t help but listen to and him along with the opening of the song as it warms his withered, old heart. On the other, other, other hand, Mammon can’t help but feel a little upset that Charlie didn’t come to him to help produce the song (and monetize it).
Sorry for for the wall of text, I’ve had this idea rattling around in my head for a while and I’ve been too busy to share it.
There is absolutely no need to apologies for something like! This, without hyperbole, captures exactly what I love about Mammon.
The lyric being used because of both his connection to Charlie and his sin-centric mindset, like the other sins.
Mammon, at least to me, values the feeling of a job well done as much as he values money and this captures it perfectly.
The way Lu Lu World is a passion project for Lucifer, Loo Loo Land at least plays host to a passion project of Mammon's.
The thought of little Charlie messing around with uncle Mammon in his music room/ recording booth is so wholesome, I adore it! Their dynamic has so much potential and exploring it is always fun. Any more discussion of it is more than welcome here!

hellooo redacted nation, i come to you today with a humble question to test the waters a bit....
so for a while now i've been working behind the scenes on some stuff and i've mentioned it a few times on my blog but ok hhh here goes
tl;dr is that i want to make fan audios taking place in the redactedverse, but with exclusively original character speakers and listeners, and the audios would take place in my version of one of the other cornerstone cities (not one that's already named in canon)
these audios would be from a female presenting speaker (so F4A) and besides the worldbuilding and some easter eggs and references thrown in, would not be connected to the dahlia stories plot wise.
so i guess my question here is....
more rambling and i guess explanations of my thought process under the cut
i've been working on a couple different scripts on and off now for a few months trying to learn how to do scriptwriting for audios (oh my god it's so hard how does ANYONE do this 😫) and i have a one or two that are close to being ready to record so i've really started to think about the idea of actually doing this, which is why i'm suddenly so concerned about if anyone would actually want to listen to them 😅
i have friends that are really supportive and helpful of this project but none of them listen to redacted or audio roleplays in general so while i value their input, it's not exactly the same as knowing if the actual fanbase would be interested. saying to them "this character is a sadism demon! this character works for the department!" is equivalent to someone who has never heard of star wars opening a fanfic and reading that someone is a jedi, y'know what i mean? (i use this example as if i am not a bitch that has never seen a star wars movie in their life oop)
and even if the majority of ya'll aren't really interested in what i make, just knowing that a few people would be willing to give it a try will hopefully kick those doubtful thoughts out of my mind and get me inspired to finally finish something! 🥹🙏
and idk if this all needs to be said but i feel better making this disclaimer: i'm obviously not affiliated officially with redacted, and i really stress the term "fan audio" because i don't want to try and claim ownership over his worldbuilding in any way. my intent is not to copy or steal his original ideas, i just want to show my love for his work by making something with all the stories in my head that it inspired. because of the nature of this, i don't ever plan on monetizing the videos if i ever got to that point. and while the characters i make and the storylines that would follow them along with the setting i make would be mine, all creative credit for the overarching worldbuilding itself will always be enthusiastically given to erik.
and i guess if you actually read to the end of all this rambling i could reward you with...... a little something...... a teaser if you will 🫣
#redacted audio#redactedverse#argent rambles#argent originals™#i've been so nervous to post this but i just gotta do it hhh#i hope what i said makes sense lol

Hey there, I’ve been a fan of your channel since finding your “Halo:Revolved” video like a year or 2 ago! I’ve been working on making a big 2+ Hour video essay to release on Halo 2’s 20th Anniversary bit by bit since January, which will be a compilation of my Halo 2 analysis series, and obviously no video essay about Halo 2 is complete without a focus on its community & legacy. So I was wondering if you would be interested in answering 2 questions which will be featured in the final compilation video. My channel isn’t monetized, and I will be sure to link your channel in the description of course, this project is merely a labor of love because Halo 2 is the game that inspired me most to get into the gaming industry myself. I don’t have a preference between you doing just an audio recording or a video of you answering, whichever suits your fancy. Feel free to ask me to return the favor any time in any of your videos,it’s the least I can do should you contribute to this video essay. Thank you for your time & have a lovely day!
Question #1: What has Halo 2 come to mean for you personally since its release all the way back in 2004?
Question #2: What do you think the legacy of Halo 2 will look like 20 years from now?

Everyone remembers the Doctor discovering six Mona Lisas bricked up in the cellar of a chateau in Paris. The Doctor knew instantly that while these may have the brush stroke of Leonardo that they could not be the original. You see, the Doctor was there in 1503 and so was I. My name is Kimberly Jane, which is interesting because he had just left behind someone called Sarah Jane. Anyway, I traveled with the Doctor for a while, and I loved it when we met famous artists such as DaVinci. Most people don't know about my time with Doctor, but I hope to set the record straight with a few stories. This first one begins in 1503. Most people believe that Lisa del Giocondo, that dreadful woman with no eyebrows, was the inspiration for the Mona Lisa, but she came later. I was the original inspiration for the painting called the Mona Lisa. Below you can see Leonardo's original sketch and first draft of the famous artwork.
Leonardo's artwork was exquisite, but as I traveled with the Doctor, I found myself in Paris in 1881. There I fell in love with the work of Vincent Van Gogh. I asked him if he would update Leonardo's work in his own style, which to my delight, he did. This is the result.
Looking at the background, I like to think that I may have inspired his Starry Night. Soaking in the art scene in Paris, I was hungry to meet more greats, so we slipped forward to 1900 where the Doctor introduced me to Claude Monet. He had just completed Water Lilies and was looking for a new project, so I convinced him to put his spin on my Mona Lisa. It was nice but something about it was rather familiar.
The Doctor mentioned that they had art back on Gallifrey, but that it was done by computers. I was curious to see how a computer could capture the intricacy and beauty of human art, so I begged him to take me to Gallifrey. But, the Doctor refused to go. He had no interest in returning home; however, he said that the TARDIS has the technology needed and could produce a work of art from Leonardo's original. Still dubious, I allowed him to put the TARDIS to work. This is what she produced.
It's light, it's fun, it's pretty, but I found the computer art a bit flat. It lacked soul. I worried that I might have offended the Doctor with my comments, but he was actually pleased with my assessment of the superiority of human art over AI. The Doctor then looked over at me and said, "Now, how do you feel about poetry?"

Witch Hat News #4 - Lessons from the Archives
by Tata Calthrop
This is an archived version of our microfiction newsletter! You can read along on our tumblr, or subscribe here.
Which archive, you may ask? Well, it's quite simple.
Our own one.
Yes, like many twenty-somethings in the creative field now, I was forged in a rather specific fire – the classic Internet pipeline of Neopets, Deviantart, Tumblr, Twitter, usually interspaced at some point with either a gender crisis or a formal diagnosis of mental illness.
You see, for a young nerdy preteen in 2010, you have two sexy choices made available to you, neither of which you will perceive until it's too late. You will choose either the path of solitude (voraciously consuming and creating content in incredible loneliness and feeling like the only person in the world who does so), or the path of the internet, where you will learn at an incredibly young age how to receive and handle a death threat. I was raised on a raw, unfiltered diet of fandom. (Sonic the Hedgehog. The world has not been kind to me.)
The fans and the hermits have a lot to teach each other. In fact, as easy as it is to make fun of – well – most people on the internet, there is something valuable to be learned from every subculture of creativity, including the horny ones.
So let me make a confession to you: I'm a fanfiction writer. I have a shameful record of 155,821 words, none of which will ever give me a scrap of credibility with anyone, including other fanfiction writers. (Heavy is the head that wears the dunce hat of Adventure/Comedy.) Hell, I've spent over a year picking away at a fancomic project. For zero dollars and no publication accolades, I have written at least five full completed novellas, which will never be published, be recognised, or prove anything except my big, fat crush on the uncle from Encanto.
My god, was it freeing.
The social pressure to monetize your art is insane. I took my first art commission before I even had my first bank account. It was my teenage dream: to be paid is to obtain credibility. The label will hang over your head like an execution hood: PROFESSIONAL. Of course, the loop never really stops; start making money and suddenly your eyes are open to how many opportunities you're missing, and how little you make compared to others, and how wide the chasm is between you and full-time creation.
(That's not to say the money and recognition aren't nice! That part I do recommend.)
But making fan content, and making friends who also make fan content, and building up a small audience of people who just want to be there for fun is incredibly liberating when you're not used to it. Get a bunch of friends who create together, join a community that makes its own memes and creates a bubble of mutual feedback and appreciation, and you start to realise: this is how they made the old tales, the oral ones before the printing press.
Here's two lessons from the archives.
Love characters. Fall in love with their vulnerable moments, their jokes, their relationship dynamics, the little unseen parts of them that you can never put in a real story because there's simply no point. Linger on the details. Develop a little crush. Project all your issues and obsess over nothing. Love your own characters, and you'll find suddenly that creating art about them changes from a chore to an act of affection. Learn what makes you fall in love with other stories, and look for the same aspects in your own.
Making art to impress a large audience will disappoint you; making art to impress a social circle of about ten interested people is how life is supposed to be lived. The early humans who painted mammoths on cave walls had no audience except themselves.
Here's a quote I like, from Prof. Henry Jenkins, Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism and Cinematic Arts at University of Southern California: "Contemporary Web culture is the traditional folk process working at lightning speed on a global scale. The difference is that our core myths now belong to corporations, rather than the folk.”
Here's another quote I like, from twitter user @FarfinFarfin: "the fastest way to improve your art is to become some sort of pervert, doesn't really matter what kind, whatever you're comfortable with".
Reviews
The Northern Caves by @nostalgebraist. The Northern Caves is a cosmic horror story about unwary scholars who delved too deep into the ancient texts, except the scholars are a group of hardcore nerds on an early 2000s fan forum for a mediocre fantasy series, and the ancient texts are fan theories about the author's baffling final novel. I know almost nothing about original fiction on Archive of Our Own, but I recognise a wonderfully online scary story when I see one. Psychological, terrifying, and twistedly fascinating reading for anyone who's ever watched an online community implode.
Songs for Girls in Love by @phemiec. PhemieC was one of my favourite musicians as a teenager, and when I got into my first relationship I rushed into the familiar arms of their love songs. They also were making, at the time, Homestuck fansongs. But when I was 15, this music made more of an impact on me than any classic musician ever could. Songs for Girls In Love has a number of fansongs mixed in, largely for things I've never consumed, but you'd never know it from their lyrical subtlety and I'm still a huge fan.
Digital Land Grab: Media corporations are stealing our cultural heritage. Can we take it back? By Henry Jenkins. Okay, okay, this one's not exactly micro or fiction of any sort. But it is the article that I quoted earlier, and Prof. Jenkins could be described as the grandfather of fanwork studies in academia. A good read about the history and creative validity of fanwork, and the ways in which corporations suppress it. I highly recommend it, even if you know nothing about fanfiction.
Your project here. Do you make art of any kind - visual, written, performed? Are you starting a project or recruiting co-creators? We want to hear from you! Email us at [email protected].
That's it for June. See you next month!

How to Get the Best Value When Selling Your Phone
Old phones, even those a few years out of date, often still hold significant value. The second-hand market is booming, with many buyers looking for quality devices at a lower cost. By selling your phone, you’re not only making money but also contributing to reducing electronic waste, a critical issue in today’s environmentally-conscious world.
If you're not using your old phone and it’s collecting dust in a drawer, ask yourself: why not monetize it? Whether you’re saving up for your next device or need quick cash for an unexpected expense, selling your phone can be a practical solution. When you search for ways to sell my phone for cash today, countless options will pop up, but knowing the right approach can make all the difference.
Preparing Your Phone for Sale
Before putting your phone up for sale, preparation is key. Buyers want a device that looks good and works well. Start by thoroughly cleaning your phone’s exterior, removing dust, smudges, and fingerprints. A spotless device is more appealing and can command a higher price.
Next, ensure all personal data is backed up and then wiped from the phone. Resetting the phone to factory settings is crucial to protect your information and make it ready for its new owner. Double-check that all accounts, such as cloud services, are disconnected.
Taking high-quality photos of your device is also essential. Images showing your phone’s condition from multiple angles can increase buyer interest. Whether you plan to list it online or take it to a physical store, these visuals can boost your chances of selling quickly. If you’re serious about selling and need to sell my phone for cash today, presentation matters.
Where to Sell Your Phone
The options for selling your phone are vast. Online marketplaces, trade-in programs, and specialized phone-buying platforms are just a few of the avenues available. Each has its pros and cons.
Online marketplaces allow you to set your own price, but they often require more effort in terms of handling buyer questions and shipping. Trade-in programs, on the other hand, are more convenient but might offer slightly lower payouts.
Specialized platforms that focus on buying used phones can offer a middle ground. These services often promise fast cash payouts and minimal hassle. If you're thinking, "I want to sell my phone for cash today," consider these platforms as a way to speed up the process.
Timing and Pricing: Getting It Right
Timing can significantly impact how much money you get for your phone. Prices tend to drop when new models are released, so selling before a major launch can yield better returns. Additionally, demand for specific brands and models fluctuates throughout the year.
Research is your best friend when determining the right price. Look at recent listings of similar models and assess their condition compared to yours. Be honest about your phone’s state—overpricing can deter buyers, while underpricing means you lose potential profit. If you're in a hurry and need cash fast, pricing your phone competitively is crucial.
For those actively searching for “my sell phone” opportunities, taking the time to understand market trends will help you make a more informed decision.
Ensuring a Smooth Transaction
Once you’ve found a buyer or chosen a platform, ensure the transaction goes smoothly. Meet in a safe, public place if selling in person. For online sales, use a reputable platform that offers buyer protection.
Before handing over the phone, confirm payment has been made. If possible, use payment methods that provide a record, such as bank transfers or digital wallets. Avoid cash transactions with strangers to minimize risk.
Additionally, provide any accessories you still have, such as charging cables or headphones. Including original packaging can also increase your phone’s value. Offering a complete package gives buyers more confidence in their purchase.

1of2 first, i hope your medical stuff works out, and your kitties forgive you. 2nd, a mortifying question, but: tumblr, what else is it for! so my hobbyist scrapping: www tumblr com/rfpreiwaphase/737374198868148224/heres-a-conference-from-2021 - only the 2nd rb is relevant, just displaying How Feral. fanworks aside, i decided i *do* want to learn this. but-if the subject might flag me as 'requesting abt pregnancy and my state is fascist af?' how does one cold-call a prof + 'i need to be anon'?
First, thank you! I'm not looking forward to it as it's my first surgery and is a fairly serious one, on the other hand, when an innard misbehaves and sends you to the hospital twice in 6 months, it gets evicted to become an outtard. Good riddance. Hopefully, I'll be up and ready for the semester :/
As for your inquiry, I've had some similar ones before, both for articles or book chapters, and for conference talks. It's a fairly polite but not too onerous request. You mention that you're personally really interested in X topic, and that you were intrigued/excited/etc. when you came across the title/abstract of X talk for x reason, and wonder if there's a way to access the paper (if the conference was recorded (a lot of sessions are, now), or if they are able to share the talk with you in any format, or if they have plans in the future to publish the work?
They may or may not do so, as if they are in the process of drafting future publication on the subject, many people are (sometimes very rightfully) leery of sharing in-process work. I've always shared when asked, though usually it's of stuff I've already published, such as articles or a chapter from my book, so I didn't have to worry about poaching.
If you think it might allay concern, you might explain that you're an independent scholar who is personally, rather than professionally interested. This is esoteric and academic enough in its treatment of pregnancy that I can't imagine that it would flag anything on a governmental level. But my guess is, if it's just a talk, it won't be monetized; that really only happens when it's published in a journal or book.
My advice is to be direct, respectful, politely enthused about their research, and short. Their answer will depend on things going on with them, rather than on if you successfully manage a secret handshake.
Good luck!

FM Interviews: Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp Founders About Their Work and Goals
Ever thought of Hip-Hop as a professional career? The University of Illinois now can help one with that. The school's summer program, 'Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp,' allows 5-12 grade students to work on their Hip-Hop skills. This summer marked the 6th year of the camp program taking place. "The Illinois Summer Youth music tradition itself as a whole goes back, I think, 100 years, where students have been coming to campus over the summer to get better whatever musical instrument or discipline they're studying, everything from show choir to piccolo, black chorus, piano, what have you," said one of the Hip-Hop summer camp's coordinators Lamont Holden. "I think it was about ten or twelve years ago they started the tradition of rock camp." And then, seven years ago, Lamont and Adam Kruse, another program coordinator, decided to launch a Hip-Hop summer camp program. Turned out Lamont's and Adam's idea was long-awaited. "I'm here at the University of Illinois, and whenever we do something that's Hip-Hop related, people are like, well, where's this been? Why has it taken so long? But the fact remains that somebody has to decide to do it," Lamont explained. "And so I think the basic premise of the camp is that students come, we meet them at whatever experience level they are at in whatever discipline they decide to choose. Whether it's production, music production, beat making, whether it's being an artist and performing, whether it's being a songwriter, whether it's being a songwriter and expressing their talents that way, or audio engineer." Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp End Goal Currently, the program offers an opportunity for students to take summer classes in beat-making, DJing, songwriting, and many other disciplines. However, the end goal is even broader. "The effort that we're undertaking does not just include this camp," Lamont explained. "We're trying to build an ecosystem where we get a chance to work with K-12 students. As we come in contact with these students, they're talking to us about their interest in Hip-Hop. I remember as a young black kid when I told my elders that's what I wanted to , they told me to get a plan B. And when somebody says, I want to play the saxophone, or somebody says, I want to play the trumpet, nobody tells them to get a plan B. they tell them to work really hard. Because there's already a path outset for you to have a career that way." The ecosystem, which Lamont and Adam work on, should allow the camp members to get a decent college education in the field of their interest. "They've been coming to camp. They're getting really good, and they're thinking about college," Lamont explained. "Well, now we have a path for them at the university level through music tech where they could study artistry. I teach classes in undergrad for monetizing your music career. I teach classes for audio recording, audio engineering, as well as beat making. Right. So now you were a student that has come to camp. Now you have the opportunity to get enrolled in classes here, and now we can show you how to make music your career." [ID: three images of white text on a dark grey background. the text reads as follows:
"dear Rooster Teeth,
since our founders created and uploaded their first video on the then-called World Wide Web in 2003, Rooster Teeth has been a source of creativity, laughter, and lasting innovation in the wildly volatile media industry.
we've read the headlines about industry-wide layoffs and closures, and you've heard me give my perspective and updates on the rapidly changing state of media and entertainment during each of our monthly All Hands meetings.
since inheriting ownership and control of Rooster Teeth from AT&T following its acquisition of TimeWarner, Warner Bros. Discovery continued its investment in our company, content and community. now however, it's with a heavy heart i announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.
please note, the Roost team is not currently impacted by this action as the Roost Podcast Network will continue operating and fulfilling its obligations while WBD evaluates outside interest in acquiring this growing asset.
we have many questions to answer in the coming days and weeks, and the opportunity to work together to implement the best way to wind things down for us and our community. we're working through what comes next in real time, and we will be as open, direct, and accessible as possible. thank you all in advance for your patience and support of one another.
let's take a moment to celebrate our 21-year contribution to the zeitgeist, advancing creativity and outlasting many of our peers from the early days of online video and digital-first content.
TO A CREATIVE LEGACY:
from a garage in Buda, TX, to global screens large and small, our teams of dreamers and doers have introduced and grown what made Rooster Teeth stand out: animation, comedy, and gaming. from new forms of animated comedy with machinima to countless viral memes, including the Immortal Snail (aka Snail Assassin), to a US-born animated series embraced by Japan as anime, and record-breaking (at the time) crowdfunded movies. you've accomplished so much and made dreams come true here. you've turned original IP into video games, comic books, and VTubers. you've directed short videos, mo-cap, and films. you've puppeteered, hosted podcasts, and have built a thriving community that spans the globe. your creativity knows no bounds, and you'll continue contributing significantly to culture wherever your paths may take you.
TO THOSE WHO COME FIRST:
despite passing through many corporate owners, Rooster Teeth transcended a media business and was a dynamic movement that shaped the bond between communities, creators, and storytelling. our founders didn't have a blueprint for a media empire, but they got close to building one alongside a community that fueled its remarkable growth. in its earliest days, RT relied on community sponsorship through time, dollars, and unwavering passion. volunteers evolved into staff, and the snowball effect grew, resulting in new relationships, marriages, births, and shared experiences that have changed lives.
TO TRAILBLAZING CONTENT CREATION:
our approach to content creation on emerging platforms paved the way for new media models. we inspired generations of creators across streaming, machinima, animation, let's plays, merch drops, touring, podcasting, and more. companies like GameStop, YouTube, Facebook, Spotify, and TikTok asked us to collaborate with them in their earliest days because we set a standard for what a digital-first brand could be. we boldly took our content beyond screens and into community-driven experiences.
TO A CHANGING INDUSTRY:
every story reaches its final pages. Rooster Teeth's closure isn't merely an end; it reflects broader business dynamics. monetization shifts, platform algorithms, advertising challenges, and the ebb and flow of patronage-all these converging factors have led to many closures in the industry. while we learn about updates on programming day by day, we will share our plans for shows, franchises, partnerships, and merch soon and share those updates with teams internally and with the community on Rooster Teeth.com.
TO OUR FINAL SEASON:
though not intentional, It's only appropriate that our last season of "Red vs. Blue" coincides with us navigating this closure together. our legacy is not just a collection of content but a history of pixels burned into our screens, minds, and hearts. Rooster Teeth has made an indelible mark on the media industry, and we should be so proud of the countless ways we pioneered a business connecting creators and content with a dedicated community.
With respect, gratitude, and sincere appreciation, Jordan Levin"
