on any other night, malcolm might be carrying himself with at least a modicum of stoic reserve while within the walls of hedonistic paradise built and run by the hand of the mata haris ; after all, he is not only their muscle for enforcement, but a guard dog for them, leashed and obedient. and always watching. an extra set of eyes in a pleasure den of this size is never a disadvantage, and though he does not carry the official title of security, his looming presence in the darker corners of the strip club is often all the encouragement their unrulier patrons need to correct their behavior. but tonight, mac isn't at heaven's night for the mata haris ; he's here for his brother. and, as a matter of fact, they're celebrating! jericho is fresh off a series of heavy-hitting wins in the ring and, deciding to lay off coaching for the rest of the night in favor of being a good older brother, mac declares that he's deserving of a few rounds of drinks ― on his tab, of course, because christ knows jer's done enough for him over the past few years.

but malcolm doesn't even really know where jericho is at this point in the night ; it's been at least half an hour and a handful of shots since he last saw his younger brother, but if he had to guess, he's likely been whisked off by one of the girls and he's getting a private dance behind some curtain or closed door. good on him. mac, on the other hand, he's not interested in dances. he'd rather have drinks. don't let his dramatic show of hesitation fool you as he's ushered back to the bar in a crowd of friends and strangers alike, it's all drunken theatrics ― they're keeping count of how many shots he can knock back before he topples like a rotten redwood. taking bets, too, he thinks, but he's lost track of who's winning. ( he is, if you were to ask him ― he's not paid for half of his drinks tonight. ) .

❝ alright, alright ! one more, one more, ❞ mac concedes as he stumbles toward the bar with palms raised in defeat ; his laughter carries through the open space surrounding the bar, even over the din of the other patrons. ❝ yer not gonna stop 'til i'm on the floor then, aye? ❞ he reaches for a round of . . . mother of fuck, he doesn't even know what he's drinking anymore ( and it's not like he can taste it to tell, either ) but he downs it in a swift swallow and slams his glass on the bar top. when he turns around to claim a rowdy victory over another round, a glazed and wobbling gaze scans the room. in search of what? he's not sure. but his unusually jovial expression drops when he spots a ghost in a flash of neon across the room. it's just as quickly snatched away by strobing darkness and mac wonders for a moment if maybe he has had one too many shots. he didn't even realize he was that bad, but when's the last time he's had a hallucination on booze alone? no tablets or pills or drops?

another flash of light ― this time an electric shade of violet ― and there she is again. his hand finds the nearest shoulder to him and, without breaking his line of sight, malcolm pats their shoulder and excuses himself from the crowd. stumbling through the crowd, transfixed in a hazy and disbelieving daze, he keeps his eyes locked on her best he can under the pulsating lights. and then, when he's close enough, ❝ nova?! ❞
