I see the oranges post about my parents is making the rounds again, so I figured I'd post an update about my parents and food.
So my folks are both in their sixties now (oranges story happened in the 1980s), and my dad is semi-retired and works part time from home. He has also become a huge foodie over the course of my parents' marriage, and is really into cooking. He now cooks every meal in that house, three times a day (if he's home and not traveling for work or out doing crazy outdoors shit or volunteering), and genuinely deeply enjoys it and loves cooking for my mom.
My mother is having a lot of anxieties about aging right now -- mainly because her father (my gramps) developed severe dementia prior to his death, and where my mom was his caretaker through much of his decline, she's terrified of going through the same thing. Any time she has a very normal lapse in memory, she panics that she's losing her mind.
So my dad started doing research. He listened to a podcast with an endocrinologist who talked about diet and brain health and work he'd done into how certain nutritional regimens can slow the progression of dementia, and he ended up reading a book on the topic and doing a lot of his own research into the science of nutrition with regards to neuroscience (he's pretty good at vetting real scientific sources and not just buying into boomer-facebook-pseudoscience).
And then he put them BOTH on a new, brain-healthy diet specifically optimized to cut out foods that have demonstrated a negative impact on cognitive function in studies, and including those that have been associated with benefits to brain health.
Now remember, my dad is a huge foodie. And he has 100% now committed to cutting out a number of his favorite foods because there was never a question in his mind that he wouldn't be doing this right beside my mom, as he cooks all their meals and they share those meals together. All to help my mom's brain and soothe her fears about her own mind and the future by working on any factor within their control.
I visited them last weekend and Dad's cooking is, as always, delicious. But even though they've cut out a lot of sugar, there's an innate sweetness in knowing just how much every meal he cooks is an act of love.

Love going over my grandmother’s house to try to take care of her and having my drunk uncle call me an ugly lesbian cunt like 25 times because I pointed out that he hadn’t fed her yet again

Clover seems to be having symptoms of kitty dementia, and has been constantly meowing. All night and all this morning/afternoon. She finally calmed down once I put her water bowl in the shower and she seems to feel safe camping in there. I put down a lil bed for her so shes not sleeping on the bare tile. I'm so worried about her, I hope shes not in pain. I can't afford to take her to the vet rn, and she doesn't seem to have problems walking or jumping, so I think it's just her mental state that isn't doing well. I'll probably hotbox her with feliway and catnip while shes in there to keep her relaxed.

"i've cooked for you using expired ingredients and recycled old dishes to make new ones :) you'd better eat it or else i'll throw a tantrum because you don't appreciate the effort for me to feed you" should not be a common occurrence in this household

I am so absolutely burnt out on meal planning for grandpa. It's an issue because I have no go foods for dietary and health reasons, and he has issues due to the same.
I never thought I'd see a day where I'm both sick of pasta and soup, but here we are.

My little old lady dog has never liked me, no matter how many French fries I've bribed her with, but tonight she climbed into my lap and is laying down and won't move. At first I think it was because I was eating, but I finished the food and now she's layed down and cozy and won't move. I'm trapped under a little old lady dog who normally hates me. I want to sleep. What do I do.

ProTip: When you're a cognitively impaired self-proclaimed "stable genius", it's not a good idea to accuse others of being cognitively impaired.
Donald Trump essentially created raw material for an ad for Democrats at his speech at the Family Research Council.
In his latest gaffe-laden speech, Donald Trump appeared to suggest former President Barack Obama was running in 2024 as he warned that “cognitively impaired” President Joe Biden could lead the country into “World War Two” if he wins re-election. During his remarks at the Washington DC Pray Vote Stand Summit on Friday, the former president said: “We have a man who is totally corrupt and the worst president in the history of our country, who is cognitively impaired, in no condition to lead, and is now in charge of dealing with Russia and possible nuclear war.” “Just think of it. We would be in World War Two very quickly if we’re going to be relying on this man, and far more devastating than any war,” he continued as dramatic music swelled in the background.
Maybe if Trump attended his history classes instead of cutting class to steal ketchup packets from McDonald's he'd know that World War II was started by his fascist icons in Europe.
Of course Trump was attempting to act as a mouthpiece for his overlord, the "savvy genius" Vladimir Putin – but botched the line.
Let's not overlook Trump's hilarious unforced error in the same speech.
The former president said he was beating Mr Obama, the 44th president, in the 2024 election polls and then appeared to suggest he had beaten him in 2016 before correcting himself that his opponent then was Hillary Clinton.
Are you really beating somebody if that person isn't even running against you? 😆
Republicans and Russian meme makers want Americans to focus on Biden's age while ignoring Trump's mental unfitness – as well as HIS age. It's time to quit being defensive and go on the attack.
If you see or hear any reference to Biden's age in the news media when, in the same story Trump's age or fitness are being ignored, it's a good idea to contact that organization and ask why they are being so obviously one-sided.
Trump's dementia challenge: Fear of Alzheimer's has him scrambling
Oh, and isn't somebody who throws food around and has temper tantrums more likely to start a nuclear war?

The wife of a resident at work came up to me with a massive jar of peanut butter and sheepishly returned it from her husbands room. I told her to just keep it since I think sanitation rules go against that. I don’t care, it’s just peanut butter, but god that’s so funny.
