Karen Margolis explores the “unseen forces that shape our every thought and action” in ‘Cerebration’ (2018) at the 86 Street (N) station in Brooklyn. “Providing form and physical presence to these mysterious interior energies, she focuses her investigation on the mind's operations, recording internal monologues in order to explore the patterns created by various feeling states.” Margolis combined her abstract imagery of thought patterns with images of local maps, and these were translated into glass mosaic by Mosaicos Venecianos for the installation. She further explores the universality of macro/micro patterns in her solo exhibition “In the Precipice” currently on view at Foley Gallery through November 17.

The Variance Project, will be my first physical exhibition, displaying just a few of the different black gay men that I've come into contact with these past few months. Capturing their stories and image, I was allowed to hear their views on masculinity and femininity within both them selves and the gay black community around them. As children, black boys are expected take on the role of the warrior, the machismo, the man. We are told what we do, how we do it, and who we do it with. We are given an even longer list of things not to do. What does it mean to be masculine? Being feminine or a little of both? This week: Anne-Floor Sinnige, founder of Moments of Light - a line of luxury scented candles and beauty products. Anne-Floor’s ambition is to connect people through thoughtful ‘moments’. All her products represent a significant moment or feeling, which is translated into a poem and attached with love.

Anne-Floor: “This is a photo of a poem by Sugar Ray Leonard, former American boxer- a man known for his strong fist in the ring. On this envelope, he wrote a poem, as if his ideas would soon vanish. It seems to me that this envelope was the only piece of paper that he had at hand. In his poem, he describes ‘the touch of a hand’ to highlight the power and importance of vulnerability. This for me, makes the work special.”

About the artist: Photographer Leutwyler’s celebrity portraits can be found in the pages of Vogue, Vanity Fair, the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire Magazine and Time. He has photographed the likes of Michelle Obama, Julia Roberts, Tom Wolfe, Iggy Pop, Rihanna and Martin Scorsese to name a few. Often spare and unflinchingly tight, Leutwyler’s photographs are a quiet yet striking rebuttal to today’s hyper retouched and uber stylized images. “There’s a whole new vocabulary surrounding photography that I find quite vulgar. For me, it’s not about ‘shooting’ and sensationalism,” he says. “It’s a magic moment that happens in the first few minutes of a sitting. Revealing something from out of my subjects that isn’t obvious — finding the beauty within.”
