Hi, hello. I stumbled upon one of your Fo4 fics on Ao3 a while ago. I think it's really cool that you're so unapologetically willing to write stuff about your OC.

I've gotten really used to people hating on OC or Self Insert fics that I can get really self-conscious about posting my works.

But you have a whole tumblr blog dedicated to your OC! And your writing is really good and I just think all the work you've done is so cool. I just wanted to let you know ☺️

And yeah, I did just kinda burst in here and shoved my feral kitten problem child with her Detective RoboDad for all to see, and I’m not ashamed of it. I never understood why people would get so mad about people posting about their own OCs even if they are self inserts, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

I did originally worry that the little flower child Jasmine/Rosalinda was too much like me despite the fact that our personalities are wildly different so I toned down some of her background and even thought about giving her a complete overhaul, but now I think SCREW IT- she’s a Mexicana now! Because I can write and portray an actual Latino character accurately so I might as well with her like I had planned from the start.

All that to say that I had my own insecurities, but thankfully I bloomed pass that with support from some beautiful Tumblr friends and I hope to continue making more content in the future. 💖💖💖💖

Companions react: Sole who collects toys for Shaun

Ada

She doesn't even bat an eye when Sole goes around picking up every toy they see

Sole probably only tells her the truth once they overhear Ada calling it scrap

After that Ada will make very sure she doesn't scrap any toys she finds and instead leaves them in a nice pile for Sole to sort through and keep any they want

Might even find it hard to scrap the toys Sole doesn't want (because they're too broken or unsalvagable)

She definitely gets wanting to keep something to remember someone by, and seeing Sole do this might just convince her to keep a transitional object that reminds her of Jackson

Cait

Cait immediately feels like crap for complaining so much

Not only because she kept complaining about Sole's habit, but she had definitely made comments on how dumb and boring the toys are in the past

She doesn't really get it since she's not a parent (and never wants to be), but she still feels like she should have realized it sooner

It also hits a bit close to home for her because she never really had many toys as a kid, so realizing Sole cares about Shaun so much they're constantly looking for trinkets for him is almost unreal to her

She'll probably not say much about it for that reason, too awkward and vaguely in disbelief that parents actually do that for their kids for her to make any comments

Codsworth

Oh he is SO supportive of Sole

Even before Sole tells him they're for Shaun he's pointing out how much Shaun would love them

Probably has Sole's Christmas list for Shaun still stored in his memory (because let's be honest Sole was definitely obsessing over their baby's first Christmas back in October) so he'll point out whenever they find a toy that was on the list

He'll probably go out of his way to grab any toys he sees for Shaun as well

Shaun's bedroom is going to be PACKED with toys before he even gets out of the Institute

Curie

Definitely more curious than frusturated with Sole picking up toys

Might push Sole too hard for an answer at first, but realizes her mistake and apologizes when Sole tells her the truth

I can imagine her having wildly different reactions on it, especially while she's getting used to emotions

One day she's going "but Shaun already has three blankets, no?" and the next day she's crying at the sight of a broken teddy bear

Grief is such a big emotion for Curie and she's so empathetic she's 100% going to be more weepy than Sole is a lot of the time

Danse

Sort of stuck when Sole tells him why they collect toys

On one hand it's his job to tell Sole to drop down the unnecessary stuff and travel light... but on the other hand... they're grieving

So as much as he wants to complain, he probably won't

He gets this is Sole's way of coping and whatnot but he's never been too good at empathy in general, so he won't really know what to say

He definitely won't bother Sole about it, but he will also just kinda ignore it

If him and Sole are close he might (rarely) bring them a toy in good condition he found (he's a scavenger at heart, of course he'll be looking for those things)

Deacon

Probably one of the most initially annoyed companions in this list

He hates kids and everything to do with them so before finding out he'd make plenty of half-jokes half-complaining jabs at how much the kids toys suck

Every time Sole picked up another toy Deacon's saying "Why did they have to make that face so weird?" "Did kids really play with this crap?" "If Santa got me THAT as a gift Christmas would be ruined forever!"

But once Sole tells him the truth he feels like a major asshole

He's another emotionally stunted man who won't know what to say!

He'll mostly ignore it and look the other way, but he'll also sometimes offer to carry the toys for Sole if their pack is too full

It's the least he can do after being so rude to them

Father

He definitely felt Something when Sole told him that fact (sympathy?? Longing?? Who knows)

The fact that he never left Sole's thoughts even while they were struggling to survive in the wastes means a lot to him (he has parent issues okay?)

Gets a bit weirded out if they still insist on gathering toys and giving them to synth Shaun

Like... he's a robot... he doesn't play with toys... why are you grieving me when I'm right here (he's also very emotionally stunted. Unsurprisingly)

Generally not too empathetic about it, and will definitely comment on it if Sole tries bringing dirty/broken toys into the Institute

Gage

Least likely to back down and apologize like the other companions after Sole admits the truth

Probably takes the realist approach of "There's toys everywhere... why can't you just wait until you actually find Shaun and then bring him to an old toy store or something?"

Will be a lot easier on them once he knows the truth though

It's just weird when they're surrounded by toys everywhere. They're literally in an amusement park. Can't Sole just bring Shaun there once they get him??

He's also a bit worried about Sole seeming like a softie, or trying to leave Nuka World once they get their kid back

A toy car or a deck of cards is fine, but you are NOT parading a five foot tall teddy bear around Nuka World. Gage will put his foot down for that one

Hancock

He'll probably only get annoyed with Sole's collection if it manages to get in the way of their work

He has always found childrens toys creepy... he's pretty thankful not many kids wander around Goodneighbor for that reason

Once he finds out the truth his demeanor will change from mild annoyance to "you know what? You do you"

He'll probably find an old tire or something and go "You think Shaun would like this??"

He doesn't know what kids like!! Especially old world kids. When he was a kid he would have been entertained for HOURS with just a stick... why wouldn't Shaun??

Either way, he lets Sole go do whatever they want to do. He won't judge as long as he doesn't have to look at Jangles for any longer than necessary

Maccready

Feels like a complete asshole for not connecting it together sooner

Childrens toys, missing child... how did he not SEE that

Hell, HE grabs little toys for Duncan every once in a while. Obviously he can't judge

He might be a tiny bit salty though

He's had to teach himself to not pick up every toy he thinks Duncan would want because he simply can't send them all to him, so seeing Sole constantly fawn over plushies and trinkets... just kinda hurts knowing he can't do the same at the moment

That being said if he finds something he wants to give to Duncan but can't, he'll give it to Sole instead

Ends up being a pretty good system for them both

Nick Valentine

Out of all of the companions he'd be best at emotional support

He'll sincerely apologizes for bugging Sole about the "junk" they've been lugging around and will reassure them that Shaun would love it

He still remembers which toys were popular at the time and will talk to Sole about it whenever they find one

Catch him and Sole repeating commercial jingles back and forth

He gives them a lot of space to grieve and never complains about all the toys once he finds out who they're for

He doesn't shy away from gently putting his foot down if Sole gets a bit ridiculous, but he does so very, very gently

Like "Hey, that teddy is in tatters. How about we find one that's a bit more... huggable?" or "Shaun doesn't need two Giddyup Buttercups, but if you're okay for it I know a little girl in Diamond City who's been begging for one all year"

Old Longfellow

Aw hell, why not?

Definitely empathizes with them

He feels bad for Sole once he learns the truth so he's perfectly happy to just shut up and let Sole do whatever they need to do to grieve

He's also not really a toy person so he doesn't get it

Like "you think your kid would like THAT??"

But whatever. Sole knows their own kid better than he knows them. If Shaun gets traumatized by seeing Jangles the moon monkey, that's Sole's fault

Piper

Likely to take an "aww, that's sweet" approach to things

Similar to Hancock in that she... doesn't really get it??

Like who needs all these old toys most people don't know how to play with?? Nat played with a rock and a loose piece of string when she was little and she was just fine

Tries to show enthusiasm but ends up going wayy off the mark

She grabs a Barbie doll and says "wouldn't Shaun like this?? He can... I don't know... brush her hair??"

"Shaun would love this!" "Piper that's a mechanical keyboard... with no computer" "Well maybe Shaun would like pretending to write stories!"

Preston

Straight up apologizes for being so harsh to Sole

He didn't need to be so rude about Sole picking up toys. It's their backpack, they can fill it with whatever they want

Appreciates what Sole's doing and will make sure the kids in any settlements don't touch Shaun's toys

He's pretty curious what a lot of toys actually do. He'll ask Sole things like "so do kids... just... sit on the Giddyup Buttercup? And do nothing else??"

Will offer to carry some toys or have caravans bring them back to settlements if they're too much for Sole to carry

Going into headcanon territory here but I assume the Institute probably makes toys for (the scientist's) kids to play with already

Not to mention the Institute is pretty anti-clutter, and Shaun doesn't "need" toys to begin with

He just can't wrap his head around why Sole feels the need to hoard a bunch of old broken toys when good ones are in the Institute already

If Sole just insists on keeping the toys in the old nursery he'll be a bit annoyed but won't show it (gotta respect the future director and all)

How would the companions react to riding the nuka cola space rollercoaster?

Companions React to riding the Nuka-Cola Space Rollercoaster (+GAGE)

Once the Nuka World Roller-coaster, finally got electricity and was fixed up. Sole wanted their companion to go with them and try it out. While some of them are fine with it, others aren't. 

Cait:

The short answer was NO. No matter how many times Sole asked Cait it was a straight NO. But with a few bottles of beer and a bet of 150 caps from Hancock. Cait strapped herself into the rocket. For the first few seconds Cait was fine but when the machine started moving forward. Suddenly 150 caps weren’t enough but it was too late. And with that, the ride took off taking Cait with it. While Sole was laughing and cheering, Cait was clawing at the machine while screaming. Seeing Cait freak out Sole immediately takes her hand to calm her down. Without hesitation, Cait instantly calmed down followed by a blush. Soon after the ride was over and they arrived at the beginning again, Cait screamed, “One more go!”. It's gonna be a long night.

Curie:

Roller-coaster? This is something that she read about in the lab a long time ago. She always wanted to ride a roller coaster. Some of the scientists that she worked with used to talk about the Nuka World rollercoasters every now and then. Which made her wish she could experience one. But that was all before she got her new body, so she could definitely experience that now. And with that both of them got onto the coaster and shot off past the coaster doors, speeding through the coaster, Curie was so overwhelmed with such happiness. She didn't know what to do, either cry, laugh, or scream. So why not all three. Even though the coaster started only minutes ago it felt like seconds to her. Begging to ride one more time they went off again. After the third time, Sole got off spinning while Curie kept going. She was so happy!

Danse:

Absolutely not. This was a firm no. There was no getting around it. The fact that Sole would even ask a question like that, and the fact he was even entertaining it by answering them was even crazier. But a drunk Danse was completely different. He was faster jumping on the roller coaster than Sole was. Though it was absolutely hilarious to see Danse so excited on the coaster, the one downside was that Danse throw up halfway through the ride which got on the coaster railing. Hopefully, Codsworth could clean it up later. Once the coaster was over Danse wanted to go around again but Sole got him out of the coaster and got him to bed. Geez.

Deacon:

This is an obvious answer YES! There is nothing this man will not do. So the fact that Sole had mentioned it, he was already there. Even before Sole. In fact, Deacon had already ridden the coaster twice by the time Sole had brought it up. And of course, he wouldn't mind going with Sole this time. Jumping into the coaster with Sole the coaster started as soon as they buckled in. The coaster then sped off. With this being Sole's first time they shrieked with wonder and surprise as the lights flashed and the aliens battled. So to not ruin Sole's experience Deacon acted shocked and he also pretended to be surprised. Once the roller coaster ended they both got off happy that they got to experience it together.

Hancock:

HOLY FUCK YES. We all know Hancock was down for absolutely anything. Hoping in the rocket with Sole in between his legs, he took some jet and they were off. Feeling the rush of jet and the adrenaline. Hancock cried tears of joy. He has never felt such a high as this one. But all things must come to an end. So holding a screaming Sole in his arms while the ride came to a close, he got an idea. He wouldn't tell anyone, but this was probably one of the best days ever since he discovered he could make BuffJet. Coming to a stop Sole got out but before they could help Hancock out, he was off again. Leaving a hearty scream and an empty jet canister behind. 

MacCready:

ABSOLUTELY! There was no way in hell he was gonna pass up this chance. He strapped in and even before Sole could get in Mac ordered the Mr. Frothy to press go. Shooting off like a rocket all anyone could hear and see was Mac smiling and screaming with his hands in the air. By the time the rollercoaster was over Mac still wasn't ready to get off. He had to go around 5 times before Sole gave up and left. But Mac was none the wiser he just kept asking to go again. Maybe later he will ask Sole to join him.

Valentine:

Well, he wasn't entirely against it but also not entirely for it. He mainly got on just to ease Soles' constant begging and bribing. He gave Piper his hat and sat down next to Sole accepting his fate. Shooting off Sole looked at him with a huge smile. He smiled back but his smile soon turned into a loud scream followed by laughter and then more screaming. He was having fun but this still scared him. Minutes go by of this same emotional cycle. And once it ended Sole smiled brightly and thanked him. Even though he was a little scared at first, it was really fun, and seeing Sole happy made it 10x better.

Piper:

She was a little on the fence but it took very little convincing from Sole to do it. Plus maybe she could put this story in her paper. Maybe something a little positive to give her readers. So she strapped herself in with Sole not too far behind and waited for the ride to start. As if on cue the ride shot off before she could even finish her thought. This was probably the most fun she's had in years. This was such a crazy feeling. She never felt joy and fear at the same exact time before. The pits in her stomach were knots the whole time and she couldn't help but sweat through the palms of her hands. But in the end, it was all worth it, she enjoyed it so much that she might have to bring Nat to try it one day.

Preston:

He was super nervous about it at first. It's not like he has a fear of heights, it's just that he doesn't like being up high that long. The highest he was fine with was the castle wall or even the window at the Museum. So this was a bit of a bigger task he was quite ready for. But with Sole's constant reassurance and their hand on their shoulder, Preston felt okay and ready for anything. Strapping into the coaster with Sole right next to him, he closed his eyes to prepare but before he could even start... BOOM! The coaster shoot right off instantly without hesitation Preston began screaming at the top of his lungs with Sole laughing right next to him. Which felt like seconds to Sole felt like hours for Preston. He didn't stop screaming until the coaster stopped completely. All he could say was never again as he left the coaster.

X6:

There is no shock with this one. NO! There was absolutely no way that X6 was going to sit his ass on that rollercoaster. That was until Sole was made the leader of the Institute and anything they order he had no real choice but to follow. Even though secretly he would have gone but he's a courser he has a reputation to uphold. So with that both Sole and X6 strapped in and enjoyed the ride. While Sole was happy and screaming, X6 kept his face completely straight. Though on the inside he was screaming like a schoolgirl. After the ride Sole got off and walked away, along with everyone else, heading back to the Fizz Top for dinner. X6 stayed and hid until he knew everyone was for sure gone. Once the coast was clear X6 ordered the Mr. Frothy to start up the roller coaster. Jumping back in the coaster went around again and again until he was tired of it. If only Sole knew...

BONUS:

GAGE:

Absolutely the actual fuck not. FUCK NO. There will be nothing that will get Gage on that damn roller coaster. Not unless he had a gun pointed at his head, and even in that case he would still say no. So if that's the case and he feels that way, why the hell is he sitting next to Sole on the coaster waiting for the ride to start. This wasn't how he wanted to spend his night, he just couldn't remember how he got there. And then he remembered CAPS. Mags Black. She had bet him 3,000 caps that he wouldn't ride the coaster and wouldn't scream. So here he was sitting on the coaster with Sole while the other raider bosses stood and watched. Shooting off like a rocket they were off, zooming through the ride, which made it harder and harder to keep his composure. Letting out a small shriek he quickly covered his mouth. Soon coming back into the platform again Mags glanced at Sole and before they could say anything Gage kicked them. Sole waving off Mags and letting her know that Gage won. She tossed Gage the bag of caps and left with a puff. Before Gage got out Sole snatched the caps back with a smile and said "I wasn't gonna say anything about you screaming but since you kicked me, I think I'll keep this." Gage just shrugged and nodded his head. Well, at least he had a little fun.

Something I wish they did in fo4 is recognize when you’re cheating on a romanced character… I have a few ideas but I’m curious how you think this should play out in game

This is actually a pervasive...I don't want to call it an issue...roadblock, maybe? In games with romances. Seems like no one knows how to handle this.

Verilybitchie on YouTube has a great video called "bisexuality in video games" that goes into this, so if you don't want to read this, just go put that on in the background.

Also sorry this isn't a react, but I've always had Thoughts on this

So, since this is a Fallout blog, we're talking Fallout first.

In Fo4, you can romance every single companion in the game. Well, the romancable ones (sorry, Nick harem). The only requirement to romance someone is raise their affinity through actions or natural, slow-building of the stat (affinity will slowly raise itself over time), and then you select and succeed at the final romance dice roll. Sometimes there is a quest.

Already we have an issue, because there is no feasible way to logically date all these people. It isn't a numbers issue; it's the fact that most of them hate each other. If you're (you as the sole survivor) can romance and make Hancock swoon for you, its not likely you're the type that can reel Danse. You can't be the kind of person who Preston would fall for, while also pulling Gage. That kind of thing. It isn't that no one would be down to be poly, its that most of them have so few of the others that they'd be poly with. Again, Gage is not sharing with fucking Preston, and he sure as hell isn't falling for someone who Preston can love.

It's just so players can see all the romances, I think, but it's never...it's ludodissonance, I think. At most, a romanced character will hate it if you flirt with someone else in their presence, but I don't believe it'll amount to anything.

So, what would that amount to, IRL? Everyone would be pissed! Their partner has a secret harem that doesn't know its a harem! That's an awful thing to feel. But if Sole sat them all down and explained they wanted all of them at once...still wouldn't work. I don't think any of them would really be comfortable with poly, and all of them have at least one person would they wouldn't want to be poly with. For most of them, that person is Danse. Which is very funny to me.

The thing is, Fallout 4 is a huge game, and making a game is. Fucking Difficult. It is a nightmare. And you'd have to program in all of the different combinations of reactions. That's potentially 144 conversations, if you think about every companion reacting to you being with another companion. Then you have the potential of a companion reacting to you being with two other companions. Three. The number gets insane. And Fallout 4 is humoring us with the socializing/dialog as is, so that's obviously not happening.

In Dragon Age Inquisition, you can flirt with everyone, pretty sure, regardless of romance status. If I remember correctly. But if you romance someone, than try to pursue a romance with someone else, person 2 will waggle their finger at you like nuh-uh-uh, you very naughty boy! Even when it doesn't make much sense for them.

The Iron Bull, for example, i think would be down for a poly relationship. Sera, maybe, I could see that too. Josephine is a manager, so I can see her liking the idea of delegating her love life to an outside contractor when she doesn't have the time. There are romances, here, that could have multiple people. But DAI says no, you can't. But it gets real loosey goosey with what is and isn't cheating.

So, I played that game as a dude, and obviously I went straight for Cassandra, my buff book nerd warrior princess darling. I flirted with no one else. No one. I romanced her and her alone.

BUT.

For those not in the know, Dorian is a character in DAI. His thing is that he's gay from a homophobic country, and his dad tried to conversion therapy him via magic. You go take him to meet his dad, since he showed up looking for Dorian. Dorian spells it out for you that he's gay, since while its kind of obvious, he keeps it hush due to. Well. His experiences.

You have the option to tell Dorian you've been with the same gender yourself. It's marked as flirty if you're a guy, not sure if its the same as a woman. But for a male character, this is flirting with Dorian.

Later, when you talk to Dorian back at home base, you have some options to comfort him, because obviously he's kind of upset. One of these options, I knew to be saying you actually think better of him, and think he's been very brave. I picked this the first playthrough, because I felt it was more genuine and kind.

Second playthrough, I also picked the "I'm gay too" option from earlier.

When I picked the "I think better of you option" back at base...

I'd flirted only with Cassandra. I was dating her.

And my guy and Dorian started sucking face in the corner of a library.

NEVER FLIRTED WITH HIM BEFORE. All I did was say I was also gay, and then I said I thought he was strong for going through the shit he did. Thing is, you can romance Dorian immediately following the end of that quest. So, I tested something. We just made out for like, five minutes. Wanna date? "Aren't you with Cassandra?"

So, the issue here with DAI is that it doesn't always account for...oddities. For example, The Iron Bull will flirt with you hardcore if you flirt with him, but you try to pursue him while in a relationship, he won't. He'll tell you you have great tits and that he likes being pegged, all while making suggestive faces, but the moment those birds come to roost, he's out. What? Why not? Josephine would totally be down to clown with two beefy Qunari men, Bull would be down to clown with Josie! Why is this here???

Again. Games are really hard to program. And that's after you've written all the actual story.

For DAI, I can think of three romances that would be down for poly. So, you don't have much to do there. But there's still other things you need to account for. You can't acknowledge one thing, and ignore the others. If I threesome with Sera and Josie, what happens if I try throwing Bull into the mix? What happens if I break up with Sera? What happens if we ditch Josie, and add Bull, when Sera is a lesbian? Get the issue? Relationships are fucking complicated. Especially when you're the asshole having to puppeteer them in every possible direction, in the name of player freedom.

In the other direction, we have Stardew Valley. I compare it to a child's xylophone toy with utmost affection, its very plinky-plonky in nature.

SDV works on a heart system. 8 hearts with a bachelor or bachelorette, you can offer them a bouquet and start dating. At 10 hearts, you can propose and get married.

If you marry someone, you can date as many other people as you like. You might get a cutscene where your spouse is jealous that you're giving someone else presents, but they don't actually acknowledge that you have a side piece or two. And this jealous cutscene only plays with...a side piece of the same gender as the spouse. So, the character Shane doesn't care if you and Emily had sex in the woods, but God Forbid you give Elliot a duck feather.

HOWEVER. If you reach 10 hearts with all romance options of one gender (meaning you reach 10 with all of the boys, or 10 with all the girls), you get a cutscene where all of the boys or girls confront you with your cheating, and they're all pissed at you for, like, a week in game.

HOWEVER HOWEVER, you can skip this by carrying a lucky rabbit's foot in your inventory. If you have the foot, the cutscenes just play as you hanging out. So, the boys, rather than confronting you, just have a friendly game of pool, and the girls will just chat, I think. So, the only real acknowledgement that you have multiple partners can be skipped.

On the flip side, there's Skyrim. There is no flirting in skyrim, at all. You wear a necklace, and if the person is available, they'll comment on the necklace. You get married, and then you can never divorce your spouse, or get a new one. It's the game equivalent to church kids getting married right out of high school and sticking with it.

The only game I've ever seen handle this, and handle it well, is Hades.

Hades Supergiant my beloved.

In Hades, you play as Zagreus, the son of Hades trying to escape the underworld, because Hades got full custody in the divorce and Zag wants to see his mom on weekends. I kid but that's literally the plot.

Zagreus used to be dating the fury, Megaera, who also works for Hades as an enforcer and guard. She kills Zagreus in his escape attempts. Their relationship ended poorly, and its heavily implied to be because of Zagreus being a shithead to her. She's pissed at Zag, but with enough time and Zag making amends and apologizing, she is more than willing to be friends again.

Then we have Thanatos, the god of Death. He's always busy, and you never hear of him until a certain point in the game. It takes a long time for him to show himself. When he does, it's with a ringing bell, and the area turns green with his presence. He and Zag have a much more complicated relationship, as they've both carried a flame for each other, and never acted on it. Thanatos will appear to help Zag kill enemies before he starts showing at the hub world.

Finally, we have Dusa. Dusa is a floating gorgon head. You know Medusa? Cut off her head. That is Dusa, as her own entity. She's the shy, skittish, workaholic maid for the house of Hades (the hubworld) and has an obvious crush on Zagreus, day one. Whenever you talk to her, heart effects appear, and she quickly flees. She's attracted to Zag, but she's so skittish, building a relationship with her is more like trying to make a stray cat accept pets and treats. She's down, but she needs to get comfy around Zag, not feel so shy.

You can romance all three of these people! If you romance Thanatos and Meg, they'll show up in your bedroom, and you have a brief conversation about how this relationship will work, and if you're down, all three of you hook up. Then, for the rest of the game, you have a boyfriend and girlfriend! As for Dusa, they know about her, too, and she knows about them. Dusa just can't or doesn't want to have sex, so she's more of Zagreus's platonic partner. It's hard to explain. They don't have sex because Dusa isn't into it. It's very cute and sweet.

But the point is, Than, Meg, and Dusa will get together and figure out what they want, then approach Zagreus and see what he wants, and they all work it out from there. This is possible because there are so few romance options, and the writers accounted for people wanting all three. That's actually the intended path! But either way, Supergiant considered how romance would work and function in the setting they built, and how their characters would react and adapt.

Since they were working with a small number of characters, they could easily slot in different paths and choices. You can turn down Than, Meg, and Dusa. Turn down two of them. Accept all of them! And by having characters that like each other, you don't have to worry about Person B looking at Person C and gagging at the idea of sharing Person A.

The problem with romances in video games is that, if the game isn't, specifically, about the romances, you're not going to get a fully-realized experience. Hades has two gameplay modes; the escape attempts with the combat, and the visual novel side of the game with the developing relationships with all of the characters, romances or not. Hades very much puts both things in the spotlight—and it gets away with it, because Zagreus is a fully-realized character, who is not customizable and has no player input. Zagrues decides things on his own, not because a player pushed a button to accept a quest. You don't get to puppet him around. You get very few choices in dialogue with Zagreus.

Most games with romances, you play as a customizable character, who can be anyone, and do anything. The game devs have to account for that. To account for that, everything has to be squishy, and maliable, and that means that nothing really...matters. It can't! If you put too much importance on something, but the player has x amount of freedom, there's a chance they could miss it, or break it, or do something to render it moot. In Mass Effect 2, I believe, you have the choice to save the space government. If you let them gov die, in the next game, the new government is just...the old one in different suits. Letting the gov die is a big fucking deal, but because you made it a choice, you can't expend too much time and effort on realizing the consequences. Because you also need the timeline where the gov was saved. Why would you put so much time into an optional thing, when its possible most players will choose to do the intended path of saving the space gov?

Well, its the same for romances. Why put so much time into paths and consequences that some people won't see? Why would you write discussions of Sera wondering why you thought she'd have sex with Bull, a man, when most people aren't going to do that? Why would you write 144+ reactions to you cheating on all of the fallout 4 companions?

Writing is both very easy, and very hard. Getting ideas is easy. Working out the kinks in those ideas is hard as shit. Add a deadline, a budget, and lots of investors waiting expectantly, and lots of shit gets chucked on the cutting room floor.

Alright, I’m going to sound like I’m on every chem known to fiend-kind, but I’m looking for a specific set of asks. Ada: 

She has absolutely no idea why Sole is suddenly an anxious mess, even though things had been going alright moments ago. Regardless, Ada will check in with Sole. She asks if a hug would make them feel better, and when Sole nods yes, Ada awkwardly hugs Sole with her stiff robot arms. She’d seen hugs make her old friends feel better, so hopefully this helped Sole…

Ada also asks Sole if they want to stop and unwind for a bit. Sole agrees, and the loyal robot will stand guard so they can calm down.

Cait: 

Rather confused at first– Why the fuck was Sole all shaky and panicky all of a sudden? They were safe in this little camp, right? Then she remembers that her pal Sole had pretty bad anxiety. Cait asks if Sole is okay, and offers them some cool water. She’ll sit next to Sole, letting them talk to her if they wish. Cait does her best to reassure Sole, though it’s difficult for her to understand these panic attacks…With time, she’ll get better at helping them.

She also (slowly) realizes that she’s experiencing some of the same symptoms. As much as she hates to admit it, she might need some help from Sole too.

Perhaps they can get each other through their respective struggles…

Codsworth:

Ever since he’d met Sole, he was aware of their anxiety. He had picked up on the little things– their tics, habits, and symptoms. Whenever they get into a really panicky state, he calmly reassures them that they’re okay. Then, his caretaker programming kicks in.

Codsworth will get Sole blankets, some food, a pillow, magazines– anything they need or want. He’ll also lend an ear, should they want to talk things over. Poor Sole shouldn’t have to deal with such a condition, so Codsworth will try and make things as easy as possible for Sole.

Curie: 

She’s well aware of a panic attack’s effects on a person. When Sole gets thrown into one, Curie asks if they need to go to a more comfortable place. She talks about her various projects to them, in an attempt to keep their mind off whatever is bugging them. If Sole wants to talk about what’s on their mind, though, she’ll certainly listen! 

Curie also reminds Sole to take deep breaths, and to do whatever they need to in order to feel better… As long as it’s healthy and safe. She also offers up hugs, if Sole needs some contact comfort.

Danse: 

He knows a few of his soldiers suffer from a similar fate. In fact, he himself has seen enough traumatic stuff that’ll randomly bother him. Danse puts on the radio for Sole, as that seemed to help him. Perhaps it’d help Sole? The paladin also listens to Sole, should they wish to speak about the thing that’s bothering them. He lets them know that they’re not alone in this, and that they’re strong enough to survive this. 

Danse might give them a quick hug if they ask for that sort of reassurance. He also will tell them repeatedly that everything is okay, and that they’re safe with him. 

Deacon: 

When Sole starts becoming more anxious, Deacon tries to head off a panic attack before it gets going. Deacon is quick to pick up on their tics, and he’ll check in with Sole once they start getting worse.

He’ll recommend that perhaps they should rest and unwind for a bit. If Sole passes into panic attack territory, Deacon breaks out the tasty snacks and some drinks. He’ll tell jokes and funny stories to try and take their mind off their worries. If Sole wants to talk about it, Deacon is ready to listen. 

It might be hard for him to keep his mouth shut, but he can manage for Sole!

Dogmeat: 

When Sole falls victim to a panic attack, Dogmeat is at a loss and starts whimpering. He does his best by cuddling up to Sole, wagging his tail slowly. He’ll give them plenty of kisses too! 

Sole knows that he loves them, right? 

And that he’ll always be there for them?

Hancock: 

Might try offering Sole some chems, to help them relax. However, Hancock eventually realizes that this runs much deeper than he thought. He’ll apologize for trying to dope them up, and try and comfort Sole to the best of his ability. If they ask for a comforting hug, Hancock will awkwardly oblige– he isn’t used to people wanting to hug him post-ghoulification. 

He also picks up some of their favorite snacks, so that they can at least enjoy something. Hancock also has plenty of wild tales to share, and he makes sure to offer his storytelling services to Sole if they need a distraction.

Longfellow: 

Not used to dealing with this sort of thing, Longfellow panics himself. Why on Earth was Sole so anxious? How could he fix this?

He tells them to relax, which doesn’t do anything for Sole’s panic. Apologizing, Longfellow helplessly offers them a sleeping bag. Maybe they can sleep it off? He makes sure to hide his whiskey, as Sole definitely shouldn’t get their hands on that. They’re in bad enough shape as it is. 

Longfellow does assure Sole that he’ll keep watch while they nap. He’s ready to stay up all night if needed, so Sole feels safe. 

MacCready:

He’s got some understanding of panic attacks– they seem similar to how he gets sometimes. MacCready lets Sole borrow a few of his prized comic books, so they can get back on track mentally. No use in stewing over the stuff that makes you anxious, right…? 

This backfires, and he learns a valuable lesson: distraction doesn’t always help in times like these. He quietly keeps them company, and gets them some food . He allows Sole borrow his bedroll, should they wish to lie down or nap too. 

When they get tired enough to sleep, MacCready will tuck them in and stand guard dutifully. 

Nick Valentine: 

His calm voice sure comes in handy here. He’ll reassure Sole to no end, always checking up on them no matter what mood they’re in. When Sole has a panic attack, he immediately gets them some books, and a cup of clean water. Perhaps they can get their mind off things for now, and onto something more enjoyable? 

At least until they’re out of their panicked state, so they can deal with the problem more effectively…

He typically rests a reassuring hand on their shoulder, if they allow that. Sole sometimes asks for hugs, as Nick’s embrace is solid and calming. He obliges, even if he doesn’t really understand why Sole wants to hug a hunk of metal and wires. Whatever helps them, though, right?

Piper: 

While she may not totally understand, Piper asks Sole what she can do to help them. Whatever they need, she’s ready to get! Piper also makes little puzzles for Sole– Things like crosswords, word searches, the works. Those certainly should help get their mind off things.

She also leaves them little secret messages. Things like ‘you’re so awesome and brave, Sole’, y’know? That seems to cheer them up a little!

Should Sole want to talk, or be left alone, Piper will gladly follow their lead. They know what they need, and she’s happy to provide that for them.

Porter Gage: 

Originally, he’s oblivious. Gage doesn’t get it at all, and will often tell Sole to calm down. He tells them to go and unwind somewhere, or do something fun. Once Sole explains, though, he understands it a bit more. 

It’s hard to temper his ‘just relax’ reflex, due to his rough upbringing. It takes time to get past that, and for him to learn that just being there for Sole can help them.

Gage listens to Sole’s woes, and occasionally tries to distract them with fancy knife tricks. He also grabs them some Nuka-Cola and some treats from the park.

Preston: 

Having gone through similar things, Preston understands. He does make sure to tell Sole that, and ask them what they need or want. He offers them a lot of stuff, ranging from cozy blankets to story-telling. 

As long as they could get their mind off things, they’d feel better… 

At least, that’s how it went for him. If that doesn’t work for Sole, he won’t stop trying different ways to help them.

Hell, he’s even willing to cuddle with them, if that’s what Sole needs. Preston just wants them to feel better, and to understand that they have a friend who gets it…

Strong: 

Honestly, he doesn’t know what to do for Sole. He has no idea what these attacks are, and telling Sole to calm down just seems to make things worse. Strong tries to give them space instead, which also backfires. Eventually, he realizes that the best he can offer Sole is reassurance. He does his best to give them that. 

Strong just wants them to feel better, so they can do more fun and dangerous stuff together.

X6-88: 

He recognizes that Sole is clearly under duress. He’ll constantly ask Sole if they’re okay, or if they need a bit of a break. Yes, it’d be wiser to keep moving. But this is Father’s parent, and they need to be in tip-top shape to work efficiently. He eventually begins to care for them more as a person, though, instead of for what they can potentially do for the Institute. 

The attacks seem rather stressful for Sole. X6-88 will just listen to them, and attempt to offer words of comfort. X6-88 gives them a blanket to cozy up in. He has a lot of stories from his line of work– perhaps he can get their mind off the anxiety? And help them feel better?

He doesn’t know exactly what to do, but he makes a note to ask the Institute doctors the next time he’s down there.

Hancock: Sole was always a tease in public not caring one bit about any prying eyes drinking in the sight of them grinding down into Hancock’s lap, wishing it was them instead. Sitting all pretty on his lap, one hand resting on the back of his neck the other on his chest as they grinded down on his growing bulge beneath his pants. Hancock growled low in his throat as he gripped Sole’s hips and thrust up against them harder making Sole moan into his mouth as they sloppily exchanged heated kisses. Sole could feel their own arousal growing into an uncontrollable wildfire within the pit of their stomach and with how hard Hancock was beneath their withering thighs they knew he was feeling the same. A quick glance down Sole could clearly see a growing wet stain on the front of his pants as Hancock profusely leaked pre-cum. Sole was quick to thread their fingers through his short hair, tugging him closer for a kiss that quickly turned into making-out making them both a withering, moaning mess. 

Once Mac pulled back to breathe he came back to his senses of being so exposed in a open alleyway anyone could just walk past and see them. “Sole maybe this isn’t the best place to do this” he looked around nervously feeling his face become a blushing mess. Sole teasingly ran a hand over his growing bulge making Mac squirm beneath their expert hands “ Are you sure you can last long enough to get back up to the room?” Sole asked innocently before nipping at his jawline. Mac could feel himself falling apart all too soon and found he could only answer their question by pulling Sole back in for another sloppy kiss that was more tongue than anything else. Sole’s hands eagerly undid his belt and slid down his pants to grip his leaking cock, the way they had been teasing him all night they knew Mac wasn’t going to last long. Sole’s only response was to lean forward and kiss Piper letting their hands find their way back under her shirt to play with her already sensitive nipples. Piper moaned into Sole’s mouth as they caved in to their touches and let their hands grab onto the collar of Sole’s jacket to pull them in closer. However, with the flooding back of the memories came the realization that said “love” was nowhere to be seen.

“Hey, Sole?”

He peeked around the room, looking for a sign of her. Her clothes were gone, along with her pack. Hancock sighed, disappointment darkening his mood. He had really thought that he was more than some one night stand to her. He guessed he was mistaken.

Sullenly, he began to get dressed, dusting off his frock coat and swinging it over his shoulders. He shuffled towards the bathroom with the intent to freshen up a bit.

“Take me down, huh? I’d like to see you try,” she stepped closer to him, reaching out to pat his cheek, a mock pout on her face, “Were you really scared I’d left you?”

“Come on,” he brushed her hand away, “You know nothin’ scares me.”

“Oh, really? ‘Cause you looked pretty scared a second ago.”

“Nah, that’s just called bein’ prepared for a fight at any moment.”

“Ah, of course it is,” sarcasm dripped from her words, “Either way, you don’t need to worry about me leaving. I don’t know what I’d do without my favorite traveling companion.”

“S’pose I shouldn’t have doubted you,” Hancock stepped closer to her, gently cupping her cheek, “Besides, who would ever wanna leave me?”

Sole rolled her eyes but leaned in, wrapping her arms around him. Despite his bony appearance, his hugs were always warm and soft.

“I’m glad you’re here,” he whispered as he pulled her in tighter.

Hancock released her, sighing.
