Hi, I hope you're having a decent day! I'm sorry if this is an invasive set of questions - feel free not to answer - but do you still actively like DSaF as your own creation, or is it more of a "it was fun while it lasted but i outgrew it and it's for the best to leave it behind" kind of project? Do you ever regret making the games? If you knew they would get so popular, is there anything you would have changed about them? Is there anywhere I could read more of your writing.

It fluctuates a bit. These last couple of years, I've really just been sorta nostalgic for it. I've seen a lot of people discuss those games being a source of comfort during bad times in their lives, people talking about how much the characters mean to them and it's hard not to smile when you see that.

It's a funny thing for close friends of yours to see people WITH fanmade DSaF merch out in the wild, or to watch a random youtube video and being hit with a DSaF reference outta nowhere. It happens from time to time, even today. On a few occasions, I've even had a person reference my work to me in real life and not realize who they were talking to, believe it or not. It's really fun to play dumb and get someone to explain your work to you like you don't know what it is.

I certainly didn't think any of that would happen when I first made the series, or even during development. I think the normal assumption would be to look at DSaF as it exists now and assume its release was a peak for it, but believe it or not, the official discord only had 30 people in it shortly before 3 dropped! The archive listing of the series (reposted to a single page after the series ended) is now sitting at over 1.1 MILLION downloads.

People kinda assume the true heyday of something is when it's new, when it's fresh and novel. For instance, some people look back at when FNaF itself was new and see that time as its peak because it had a lot of internet cultural relevance as big new indie thing on the block. But, raw numbers don't lie. The series has been continually growing since its conception and that growth has similarly bled over to its fan projects. This explains why DSaF, despite not having a new series release in almost 6 years, seems to be inexplicably growing.

Just recently, I saw someone post footage of a scene from DSaF 2 on Twitter, which got over 16k likes. People praised its writing and largely celebrated the scene. The ironic thing about that particular scene is that I remembered being unsure if it was good or not, so I showed it off in one of the FNaF community hubs. The response was broadly lukewarm to negative. Now, it's held up as one of the best scenes in those games. That's kind of the point I'm trying to make, my thoughts on the series have certainly changed with everyone's else with years of hindsight.

Heh. I'm not sure if I've talked about this in a long time, but y'know, the very first scene I implemented in-game was actually the very first Phone Guy scene in DSaF 1, more or less exactly how it appears in-game today. This was before I'd even written the bulk of the game. I was pretty unfamiliar with visual novels as a whole, pretty unsure if something like this would be palatable to a fandom that was really just used to sit 'n' survive stuff that were far more gameplay than text. I mean, there wasn't any FNaF fangames really LIKE DSaF before that point. Closest was FNaFb, a jokey turn based RPG made in the same engine.

The engine I made the game in is also not exactly fit for VNs out of the box either, and I wasn't 100% sure the idea would actually work. But, the very first time I added the image of the prize corner, Phone Guy, the audio of that iconic cheesy stock track and booted up a test screen, I had a little moment where I said "Oh. I think I'm onto something interesting here." I kinda remembering instantly realizing in that single moment how much potential the idea had. Over 8 years later, I still remember that moment like it was yesterday.

I think lately, that's the sort of stuff I think of when I see people coming to me and asking about the series. Yes, it's really rough around the edges, yes, there's jokes that've aged poorly. But, it is a source of comfort for people and entertains tens of thousands of people each month. And that's gotta count for something, right?

I need games.

Unfortunately, this is the criteria for any games I download:

1. No daily rewards. That means no daily logins. I can't deal with them. One missed day, and I'm never gonna get the mega reward. And when I don't get the mega reward I get pissed. (Now multiply all that by 50 and that's the average anger I feel when I miss a day off the calendar.)

2. No clutter. I can deal with escape rooms, exploration games, etc, but they shouldn't be cluttery. Makes my head hurt. This is the reason I love the Rusty Lake games. No clutter. Unfortunately I've played all the free ones.

3. If there's a puzzle element, the rewards should be satisfying. Like Rusty Lake. I find an item and I get excited. I use the item, I get more excited. I get stuck, I watch the walkthrough. And holy God is is somehow... satisfying. It's that feeling you get when the solution's so simple and you couldn't get it and you feel like an idiot because you didn't know. And THEN the next puzzle in connection with said item is just solvable and when the ending comes, there's that feeling of accomplishment.

4. I don't really like mobile RPGs. They're pretty boring, really. Or RPGs in general. (Except for FNaFB; I'm dying to play that game.) Maybe it's because of the space. I don't like lots of spaces in my RPGs and whatnot. FNaFB fixes that problem. Just in the pizzeria, no nothing else. Except in FNaFB3, but I'll let that slide.

5. NO LONG ASS TUTORIALS. I swear, game, I'm not an idiot! I don't need tutorials spanning an entire chapter thingy or something like that! I want to explore, be left to my own devices! It's just so frustrating when the entire game I get to play is literally just the tutorials! I get bored and exhausted of listening to instructions. Big problem I have, especially when it comes to anything casual. I'm here for the game. Not a prolonged tutorial. This is why I like games like FNaF and the Rusty Lake games. Just pop you in there, let you learn. And there's always a walkthrough ready if you need it. Usually in the form of pro Let's Plays. XD

6. Short games. Short and sweet. They're satisfying in their own way.

7. Point and click. I love those games. However, they shouldn't be too difficult.

8. Psychological horror is one of my favourite genres. However, I like the silent horrors, specifically the sidescrollers. But not too creepy.

9. In relation to 8, I like simple sidescrollers/psychological horror games with complex backstories. Or with cutscenes that really grab me. Keeps me intrigued.

10. I love games with colours. Yes, especially fantasy themed. Not too fantasy themed, however. I like a bit of horror in this.

11. If anime, I like boob physics. Or half-naked yaoi bois. AAAAAAAA-

12. No visual novel games, please. Unless if they're in relation to criteria 11 or 8. Even then, I want a bit of action too. Reading too much pisses me off. It feels me with boredom.

13. Please no games related to UCN. My laptop and phone can't handle it and my wallet's too broke.

14. Free games. I'm broke, as mentioned.

If anyone can suggest a good game for me based on the above criteria, I'll make a Let's Play on it.

Idea for gameplay in FNAFB SL

Act 1 is divided into 5 parts where you play each of the Sister Location Crew with different things they need to do and different bosses to fight. The 5th part would have all of them banded together and they fight Ennard, take over the hideout, and engage in Extreme Debauchery.

Act 2 would have Fredbear (Revived somehow) and Springtrap (Was rescued by Circus Baby) forced to team up and they’re killing off the Sister Location crew one by one (Except Ballora) due to being blackmailed into working for Circus Baby (Or something like that), after killing Circus Baby, Ballora leaves, Ennard reveals to be not quite dead, Fredbear and Springtrap fight him side by side, but Fredbear dies, and Springtrap swears to avenge Fredbear by hunting down Ennard (Who escapes).

Hey dogman, just wanted to say that I really appreciate you for making Dialtown. While I haven’t gotten around to playing it yet, I did see a gameplay of the first part from somebody on YouTube, and it was so darn amazing! Good work :)

I also have two questions that I have in my mind:

1: Will Dialtown ever get any other translations? Or it will just be English?

2: This is a DSaF-related question, but I was just REALLY curious and this was in the back of my head for a while. For Breadbear, I saw it’s origin, and it was somebody on the Freddit that made a photoshop version of Fredbear a LONG time ago. Did you add that in the game as a Easter egg? Or just thought it would be pretty funny in general.

1)It'd be so much work to translate. I'd only have it translated if the english version did well enough to warrant me going to a reputable company/service that could translate the game without destroying its humour completely... Given the size of the game, I find this eventuality unlikely. 2)Breadbear, like all of the fnafb references in DSaF, is kind of a relic. Breadbear was a community meme in 2015 era fnaf's community. When I added breadbear to DSaF 1, everybody got the joke because it was a popular meme at the time. What I didn't expect though, was the meme kinda dying off within a year and DSaF being STILL popular literally HALF A DECADE after DSaF 1's release. So, yeah, no, Breadbear's a community meme, and it was always meant to be understood as being smth that originated from the community, outside of DSaF, it just didn't have DSaF's staying power, so the reference got lost.
