what's my roman empire?Maes Hughes never got to see his little girl grow up. The man who loved his daughter and wife so much. The man who cherished his family until his death. And Elicia Hughes probably won't remember her father. That little girl will see pictures of him and know that he's her father. But she won't remember what it's like to be carried on his shoulders or the feeling of his scratchy beard against her cheek. People will tell her that she was his pride and joy, but she won't truly know. Maes Hughes will never see his daughter graduate, will not intimidate her future partner (cause c'mon he would have loved to), will not walk her down the aisle and will never be an annoying grandfather doting on his daughters children.

[Spoilers for FMAB] I think one of my favorite things about FMA is the fact that Maes Hughes intentionally acts like an idiot in order to get people to lower their expectations of his capability. Hughes is one of the most intelligent characters in the series, he’s very good at noticing all the small details. He figured out a piece of information by episode ten that could have helped defeat the homunculi much quicker, and he was killed for it. He was able to piece together everything and figure out the transmutation circle, even though it was alchemy, which he doesn’t really understand at all.

He does love his wife and daughter more than anything in the world, but he’s completely aware of the fact that everyone thinks he’s just an idiot obsessed with his family and he uses it to his advantage.

Hughes haunts the narrative by discovering what is going on behind scenes, which influences the story because of the rest of the team finding out his investigation after his death. This leads to the government being overthrown by our protags, because of them being able to counter their military plans.

On the other side though... Trisha... oh, Trisha.

She is the reason our protagonists end up like they did in the first place. She really didnt do anything at all? But by Ed and Al trying to get their mother back after she died, a whole domino effect of consecuences happened. First? Because of our characters looks, which otherwise wouldnt have changed that much 🤩 and second, because what they did catched the government's attention, and along with how they ended up, moved Ed's will enough to make him want to join the military later. Which basically leads to all the plot on the first place.

Aditionally, she is brought up here and there, because of how the accident was not something only Ed and Al had to go through, but other people too. Being cynically talked in the end by our lovely villain, because of how other homunculous actually were made without this consecuences happening... and daddy issues.

hyuai dynamic in my delusion world. riza didn't really like hughes at first because she wasn't used to such a cheerful personality, and also kinda judged him for building a family after all they've done, but she eventually warms up to him. on the other hand hughes always liked her and enjoys telling her about his family because she's a very good listener :^) did you know hughes calls her "riza-chan" in one of the fma games i think that's important
