How Online Florists in California Set High Bars
One of the few industries that has undergone many transformations in the last years is the flower industry, and one of the main reasons is online shopping. California is no exception, and now the people of California are being set new benchmarks of convenience, ease of access, and better services through online florists. These businesses have adapted to the shift, where consumers increasingly prefer shopping from home, by offering unique and personalized floral arrangements through florist delivery online in CA. This article explores how California online florists are at the forefront of leading this dynamic market.
The Emergence of Florist Delivery
Traditionally, the purchase of cut flowers demanded a visit to a florist flower shop where buyers browse through arrangements and interact with staff to select their desired blooms. Although this model has merits, it can be time-consuming and limited by geographical constraints. Online florists allow a consumer of California to order from anywhere in the state and eliminate distance and time as factors constraining an individual's ability to arrange for flower delivery.
Accessibility and Ease
The most compelling advantage of online florists is the level of access they offer. In fact, customers can view and order flowers anytime during the day through the site without necessarily having to coincide with store hours. This flexibility is especially valuable for busy professionals, families, or people looking to send thoughtful gifts without the hassle of visiting a physical store.
In addition to being accessible, CA florist delivery online also provided convenience beyond what simple accessibility would have been. For example, some florists online would offer same-day delivery services. This means that some of the orders could be ensured to reach the target flower stand on time with the shortest notice possible. Be it a last-minute birthday or an apology present, such convenience can greatly affect customer satisfaction.
Expert Flower Arrangement
Florists in California have always been known to be innovative as well as artistic. Online helps many flower shop florists avail themselves of the opportunity to sell customized floral arrangements according to client preferences. Most customers customize their bouquets according to preferred specific flowers they like, colors, styles, etc.
Online florists also attempt to prove their professionalism using higher-quality pictures and extensive descriptions of the arrangement. The picture allows a potential client to see the outcome of his purchase before making an order, hence stimulating his confidence in the purchase. The above factors differentiate online florists from traditional shops in that the choices may be smaller.
User-Friendly Online Experience
The best florists for the online market make it easy for its users, thus providing easy-to-navigate websites and ordering processes. Users may filter their choices by occasion, flower type, and price range in order to find the right arrangement for any situation easily.
Most of the interfaces have developed smart tools that enable customers to track their deliveries, manage orders, and keep updated about the shipment status. This kind of service delivery builds up the overall experience and customer loyalty since a consumer feels supported at all stages of purchase.
Commitment to Sustainability
As knowledge of these issues increases, most Californian online florists are adopting sustainable practices in step with eco-friendly consumers. These practices include sourcing locally grown flowers and using biodegradable packaging while ensuring minimal environmental impacts.
Combined with partnerships with local farmers, online florals amplify the freshness of their products and, at the same time, nourish the local economy. This serves to preserve the environment and provide customers with flowers that are unbeatable in terms of their value for money. In fact, many people appreciate the flexibility of choosing products that resonate with their values, which is another reason for further promoting the popularity of online florals.
Wide Range of Flowers
One of the most attractive aspects of ordering flowers online is the vast range of choices. Traditional flower shops carry only a few selections due to limited space and may limit the inventory to only the most popular blooms. A florist online can be much more comprehensive, carrying virtually any type of flower, whether rare or seasonal.
Prospects of Future California Floral Shopping
Are you also searching for florists' orders online in California? Looking into the future, floral shopping in California seems pretty bright as consumer preferences change over time. The future of this industry will see more growth in online florists by making a renewed interest in constantly changing the requirements of customers and their needs.

hasan piker x weed smoking reader hcs
disclaimer! i do not condone underage marijuana usage!! this is just something silly for ppl who do/have smoked weed before. if ur under 21 in the united states don’t do it !!!
cw: marijuana usage, friends to lovers sorta idk the situation is weird, autistic coded reader ? it kinda just happens, semi pining, gn!reader
wc: 1.1k+
a/n: just me and my 3 weed smoking gfs
most of his friends in the youtube/twitch scene also smoke weed so he doesn’t really care
he smokes occasionally but only at night to help wind down a little bit
he doesnt mind the smell but he really hates when his clothes and hair smell like it
so when he’s around you make sure you’re either outside or blowing it out of a window
you never smoke inside his house
he didn’t ask you not to, you just assumed he wouldn’t like it
he doesnt and it makes him blush a little at ur consideration
whenever you get high and he doesn’t, he never says “omg ur so high” while ur trying to talk
cus like . yeah obviously that was the point ! and its not like ur completely different while high, just a little floatier and it takes you a minute to get thru ur sentences
but you talk about pretty much the same stuff and he loves talking to you
and u laugh a lot he likes that too
dont tell anyone tho
you looove getting high with him its such a special treat
ull be gathering ur paraphernalia to take out on the patio and he wanders out of his stream room looking like the sad hamster
he sees you getting ready, getting a bottle of juice and such and asks if he can join u
gasp of course he can !!!!!
asking how fucked up he wants to get so you know the best method of smoke delivery
he wants to sleep Good tonight so indica in the bong it is !
he’s nervous ab the bong so u bring out a bowl too incase he gets cold feet
he watches you get comfy in your seat outside, a comfortable warmth from the california setting sun
arranging everything ready on the table
“you look like a tweaker”
“im gonna make you a tweaker if ur not careful”
he laughs but he keeps watching you carefully pick out a healthy portion from the large bud you have, pushing it into the prongs of your grinder and twisting the two pieces against each other
he watches you pour the contents of a reusable water bottle into the large glass piece, eyeing the level of water
he watches you stop and put it to your lips, taking a pretend hit and making sure the water level is good
he watches you carefully pack the ground up flower into both bowl pieces, using your fingers to pat it level and dusting the excess back into the grinder with each one
you notice him staring but dont say anything until you’re already done
you make him an offering, bong and bowl in each respective hand. eyebrows raised as if to say, “which are we feeling?” but when he continues staring at the contents of your hands, you actually speak.
“dude are you already high, whats going on?” you laugh cautiously, genuinely a little worried but keeping it light hearted. he seems to snap out of it at your voice.
his eyes dart around for a second as he reenters his surroundings, chuckling when your word’s finally register, “no, yeah- sorry… really long day today,” his words fizzle out as he goes along. you cant help but feel bad, you dont know how he deals with streaming sometimes. you also feel weird about giving him a mind altering substance while he already seems spaced out.
setting the pieces down safely on the table, you look at him seriously before speaking, “are you sure you wanna do this? you’re kinda out of it,” you’re hard trying not to sound condescending, but you doubt he can read your tone that well right now anyway.
he smiles the most minuscule amount and looks away, but you see it. “yeah, im sure,” he sighs out gently before continuing, “i need to empty my brain,” he finishes by looking back to you with already tired eyes. you nod in understanding, relishing in knowing exactly how to fix his problem.
picking up the little glass bowl and a lighter, you hand both to him. they instantly look tiny in his hand and you’re not sure how he’s gonna actually do this. after realising you gave him green hit, you remind him to take a small hit. he just rolls his eyes sarcastically and scoffs, like of course he would, but you both know he would’ve blown a lung.
you watch him fumble with the glass, trying to get a good grip that covers the carb and wont burn his hand when he lights it
he eventually gets it and takes a little corner hit
a bit bigger than he was expecting tho so he does that thing where u cough the smoke out
just awful btw
u give him some water hes fine but boy does he love to complain
u just laugh at him and take ur own hit
breathing in deep, holding it for a second, and letting it go watching it escape into the open air
when he sees other people smoke it usually feels more rushed and energetic, like they were trying to ingest as much thc in as little time as possible
but you take your time. gathering everything and getting comfortable, settling into the ritual of the action. you take your time and let yourself feel it, you take your time and make sure he’s fully prepared before offering him anything
oh no he likes you !
he does end up hitting the bong but like the smallest baby hit so it doesn’t even count
he is sooo silly when hes high loves to laugh
he will def devolve into political rants if you let him, but you’re pretty good at making him laugh and redirecting him when hes like this
bc he smoked an indica this time his eyes are even more droopy than they were before and you can tell he’s getting tired
you clean up and follow him back inside amd he goes completely baby mode at the sight of kaya sleeping on the couch
petting her and pressing his face into her fur, going on and on about how soft she is
you laugh and sit on the other end of the big sectional covered in pillows and blankets
when hes done melting into kaya he sits down next to u with his arm around the back of the couch
real smooth .
it works 1000%
watching smth stupid like family guy (genuinely my fave show while high i will not elaborate)
chilling until he decides to go to bed at like 8:30
he convinces u to sleep on the couch bc ur both too high to drive and he would freak out at the thought of u in an uber rn
okay i have to be done i basically wrote a oneshot in the middle bye bye

“How am i supposed to spoil you when you wont accept my gifts?”

Companion piece to:
Wild Bloom - Jamie buys flowers on the anniversary of Lee's death.
Palm Sunday - Jamie needs help with one of his plants.
Everything (NSFW) - Jamie wants everything with you.
Miss You - Jamie misses you when you go away to California.
The Making of A Man - Jamie reflects on your relationship.
Jamie knows how much you make, you’ve never told him but he’d caught a glimpse at your bank statement when you’d left your laptop open to answer the door to a delivery and he knows it’s modest.
That’s why he never tells you how much the wine costs, why he always takes care of the bill during that last round of drinks instead of having it brought to the table.
“You never let me spoil you.” You pout one morning when he’s tangled up in your sheets, contented and sated.
“You’ve just ruined me with filthy mouth of yours.” He reminds you, his arm wrapping around your waist as he draws your hips up towards his face. He guides your hands to the headboard before his lips ghost over your parted thighs. “You’ve spoilt me enough.”
“That’s not what I meant…”
But then your breath catches because his mouth’s already on you and he’s using that sinful tongue of his to distract you.
It’s a couple of hours later that you surprise him. He wakes up to the scent of coffee, the bed empty beside him. He sighs happily as his palm runs over the sheets because he doesn’t do this, he doesn’t sleep in. He’s usually up at the crack of dawn, sitting at this desk, putting out whatever fire the ranch has created overnight.
I could get used to this he thinks, he could take weekends off, spend Sundays mornings ruining you. He can’t express just how much he enjoys the thought of that.
It’s when he enters the kitchen that he finds the navy blue box sitting on the table waiting for him. It’s tied with a pretty gold ribbon that sparkles in the sun streaming through the window.
“Happy birthday.” You say, your lips brushing over his forehead as he sits down at the table.
Jamie doesn’t celebrate his birthday, he hasn’t since his mom died. At the Yellowstone it was just another day to get through. When Lee was alive he’d come over, throw a couple of steaks on the grill and share an expensive bottle of bourbon but his brother’s been dead almost two years and the last occasion came and went without any acknowledgment from the other members of his family.
His breath catches when he opens the box because this gift is way too much, he doesn’t deserve it.
“Dani.” He whispers as he stares down at the antique wristwatch, the one he’d shown an interest in a couple of weeks ago when you were strolling through town. He’s not sure why he was attracted to it, he has dozens, more valuable ones at this room at the Yellowstone but there was just something about the simplicity and history attached to it that captured him. It’s not expensive, not by his standards, but it is by yours. “I can’t accept this.”
“Yes you can.” You say firmly. “You’re always spoiling me. Let me spoil you for a change.”
His chest constricts because no one has ever given him such a thoughtful gift, no one has ever cared enough. It’s when he takes it out of the box, that he discovers the engraving. He can feel it under his fingertips before he turns it over and studies the cursive indentation.
D.E loves J.D
Dani Everett loves Jamie Dutton.
It’s such a stupid, little thing but it means the entire world to him.
“Dani.” He whispers, his voice raw with emotion. “It’s perfect.”

Sweet Nothings
Spencer Reid x fem!BAU reader fluff fluff fluff
Broken. Broken and with no chance of repair. That’s how one feels after many failed attempts, the uncertainty of what the future holds, and the fear that your house of cards will come falling down, crumbling down the walls you had to build up after being hurt. But it’s a simple event that sets off a chain reaction putting you on a course in which you will find something beautiful at the end of the path. For Spencer Reid, that single event was a kiss on the cheek; for Y/N, that event was a cute, nerdy professor bringing her coffee on her first day as a profiler.
They had become friends since the day they both moved into the same apartment building and coincidentally enough right across from each other bonding over the newest museum exhibit and books. It was a rare event for him to instantly bond with someone, it was even more rare for someone to look at him the way she did like she was excited to hear him talk and ramble on infinitely usually people would beg him to stop. She didn’t. She was rare, she was like a book in a foreign language and he just needed to learn the language, to understand her, because one thing was certain he would not be letting her go.
Spencer had one-week guest lecture seminar at the University of California, San Diego which he would’ve canceled since it was the week that y/n had her week long interview at the BAU and he wouldn’t be there to cheer her on but Alex had asked for this favor, but he did send her flowers on the first day. Sunflowers since those were her favorite.
On the second day of her interview there was an Uber Eats order waiting for her outside her door containing her go-to coffee order and a bagel. as the days passed, Y/N found herself immersed in the intensity of her interviews at the BAU. Spencer, though physically absent, remained a constant presence in her thoughts. She cherished the flowers and the thoughtful Uber Eats deliveries, feeling his support even if he was at the other side of the US. At the end of the week she couldnt help but reminisce on the night that they first met:
The sun was beginning to set, it was casting a warm golden glow over Virginia. Moving had always been chaotic for people, including Spencer and Y/N, but for them it was the beginning of a whole new chapter, they just didnt not know it yet. Boxed had lined the hallways fo the apartment building, the air filled with the sounds of doors creaking open and the shuffle of furniture being maneuvered into new homes. Unbeknownst to her Spencer, a brilliant but socially awkward professor, was meticulously arranging his collection of rare books when he heard the unmistakable sound of her frustrated sigh coming from the neighboring apartment.
“Need a hand?” he had asked her, she looked up, stared at the sight on untamed hair, and Spencer with his glasses perched on his nose. She couldnt help but notice that he was taller than her and if they were to hug she would be able to perfectly nuzzle herself in his neck. “...so…do you need a hand?” startled she seemed to remember that instead of answering she had blatantly ogled the man.
“Oh, please, that would be amazing. This key seems to have a personal vendetta against me.”
Spencer chuckled, it still amused him how many women blatantly ogled him after prison, stepping closer to assist. With a gentle twist and a satisfying click, he successfully unlocked the door. Y/N grinned, a sense of relief washing over her.
"Thank you! I thought I was going to be stuck in the hallway forever."
Spencer adjusted his glasses with a sheepish smile. "It's no problem. Moving can be quite the ordeal. I'm Spencer, by the way."
Y/N extended a hand, her eyes sparkling with genuine warmth. "Y/N. Nice to meet you, Spencer."
Spencer and Y/N spent the rest of the day helping each other unpack, sharing stories, and discovering common interests. The awkward professor found comfort in Y/N's easygoing nature, and she, in turn, appreciated the depth of his intellect and his kind heart. Spencer and Y/N sat on the floor of Y/N's apartment, surrounded by half-empty boxes, books they were exchanging, wine and take out scattered along the living room floor. “Well, its getting late i should go now, its my first day back at work after some time off” spencer nervously said not knowing if he should reach for a hug or a handshake when saying goodbye. “Goodnight doctor” Y/N said getting on her tip-toes and kissing him on the cheek… a flustered Spencer walking back to his new apartment.
*back to present timeline*
The BAU office buzzed with activity on Y/N's first day as an official profiler. Excitement in the air as the team prepared to welcome their newest member. Spencer Reid was racing back from his guest lecturing at the UCSD, eager to see Y/N in her new role.
As Y/N settled into her desk, surrounded by the unfamiliar faces of her new colleagues, a frantic Spencer flew through the doors. The team turned to see Spencer, disheveled hair and all, sprinting into the room. His eyes immediately found Y/N, and a wide grin lit up his face.
"Y/N!" he exclaimed, crossing the room in a blur.
Before anyone could react, Spencer wrapped his arms around her and put a delicate kiss on the top of her head. The entire team stared in shock at the usually reserved doctor displaying such open affection.
"Spencer!" Y/N laughed, her initial surprise giving way to pure joy.
He set her down gently, his eyes crinkling with happiness. "Congratulations on your first day as a profiler!"
Y/N beamed, feeling a warmth spread through her. Spencer reached into a bag he had slung over his shoulder, pulling out her favorite red velvet loaf and a thermos of coffee. "I brought your favorite. A little boost for your first day."
"Did we miss a memo?" Morgan whispered to Garcia, who could only shrug in response.
But the only one curious enough to disturb their little moment was Garcia "Reid, care to explain?"
Spencer turned to the team, his grin unwavering. "Y/N is my best friend, we met when I moved into that new apartment after prison and then she was moving to, right next to me anyways I heard her struggle with--"
Y/N chuckled and looked at Spencer with a lovestruck face, loving the way he rambled but it was Rossi who couldn't help but smirk noticing the way Spencer’s and Y./N’s body language was pulling them together like a magnetic force.
One evening, after a particularly challenging case, the rest of the BAU team gathered at Rossi's for a well-deserved celebration. Hotch, JJ, Morgan, Garcia, and Prentiss exchanged knowing glances, sharing a silent agreement.
"Hey, Y/N, Spencer, can come look at this edit Garcia made?" JJ called them over with a mischievous smile.
Y/N and Spencer exchanged a curious glance before following their friends. The team had something up their sleeves, and it didn't take long for the truth to unfold.
"Okay, show them baby girl," Morgan said to Garcia, a grin playing on his face. "We've been taking bets on how long it would take you two to figure it out." He explained to Spencer and Y/N
Y/N and Spencer exchanged bewildered looks, confusion evident on their faces. Garcia, ever the tech genius, pulled out her phone and swiped through a series of pictures. It was a montage of candid moments — shared glances, pining looks, and the occasional lingering touches.
"What is this?" Y/N asked, her cheeks flushing.
JJ leaned in with a sly grin. "Evidence, my dear. Evidence that you two are so ridiculously in love, and it's high time you acknowledged it."
Garcia chimed in echoing Morgan's earlier statement, "We've been placing bets on when you'd make it official.” Spencer blinked, confusing written across his face, processing the situation. Y/N, on the other hand, couldn't help but laugh at the team's orchestrated intervention.
Hotch even offered a rare smile before saying, "You two make a great team, both professionally and personally. It's about time you recognize that."
In the middle of all the laughter and teasing of their found family, Spencer Reid looked over to y/n in a wondertruck gaze. The unspoken bond that had grown between them growing by the minute he knew there was one thing left to do.
When the teams conversation started drifting to another topic, Spencer pulled Y/N into the garden Rossi had. Taking a quiet stroll around the garden,Y/N turned to Spencer quietly whispering, “this place is magical, no wonder Rossi keeps it to himself.”
Spencer, with gis gaze fixed on her whispered, “yeah its a beautiful sight.” And before she could say another word, he gently cupped her face, his left thumb brushing over her cheed. The moonlight casting a soft glow over them as he leaned in, closing the distance between them.
In the the background, looking out of the kitchen, a smiling group of people happy to see that after all the hardship, spencer had finally found his person.

chapter nineteen
in which orion has leukemia, and calum doesn’t know.
calum hood x fem!oc
read other chapters
tw for this chapter: body image, weight loss, eating disorders
august 25, 2018 los angeles, california orion
“Ready to go home?” Mama asks. She’s holding my bag of dirty pajamas and loungewear, the strap slung over her shoulder. She looks tired, but she’s still smiling.
“Please,” I say.
The past week stuck on the oncology ward has been brutal. It took five whole days for my fever to actually break, but my other symptoms didn’t go away until yesterday. Mama has been here since the first day, whereas Mom had to go back to work after the first couple here. I’ve been happy to have both of them here for whatever amount of time they have been able to be.
Emelia has come by every day to check in, and Macy and her parents have been taking care of Duke for me. Ashton hasn’t spoken to me at all since our last conversation.
Calum remains as clueless as ever, just as I’d like.
Mama and I exit the sterile room I’ve called home for a week, nodding to the kind nurses that I’ve befriended. Calum would make fun of me, saying I can’t go into any room without making a friend, but I try not to think about how Cal would feel about all of this.
We ride the elevator down to the ground floor and head out to the parking garage. It’s not really outside, since we’re surrounded by concrete and cars and absolutely no nature, but it’s nice to feel the sun and fresh air.
After we clamber into her car, she offers to take us to Taco Bell, my favorite fast food, but I still don’t have an appetite, so I tell her to just take me home. When we get to the parking garage at my apartment, the sight of my shitty car, still in its parking space next to Cal’s, makes me smile for some reason. It’s nice to be home.
“I’m glad to see you’re feeling better!” Ron cheers as we enter the lobby. “I’ve missed seeing you.”
I smile at Ron, but he can’t see it since I’m still wearing a mask. I’ve been instructed to wear it whenever I leave my apartment for the rest of my chemo treatment. It’s a fair punishment if it keeps me from feeling as awful as I have for a week. “Hi Ron, I’ve missed you too.”
“You have a delivery in your apartment, by the way,” Ron says. “I sent it up with Macy yesterday.”
“Thank you,” I tell him. Macy didn’t tell me about any delivery, but I’ll see what it is soon enough.
Mama and I ride the elevator up to the fourth floor, stepping out and walking the handful of yards to the door. When I unlock it, Duke is waiting impatiently on the other side, wagging his tail at lightning speed when he sees us. I pick him up instantly, embracing the small ball of fluff in my arms and letting him nuzzle his face into my neck.
“Hi buddy,” I coo, petting his head. “I missed you so much.”
As I set him back on the floor, I notice what the ‘delivery’ is that Ron mentioned. Sitting in a vase in the kitchen is the largest bouquet of chamomile I’ve ever seen, a light green envelope tucked in the middle of the flowers. I stride over to it, grabbing the card to open it, revealing the custom message inside.
I know it’s not a special occasion. I just miss you and wanted to do something special. Don’t be mad. I love you. Xxx - Cal
I take several deep breaths, trying not to cry. I don’t cry, but I do get a little teary-eyed. Thankfully, Mama comes over and starts talking. A welcome distraction.
“Aw, from Cal?” She asks. “He’s so sweet. Okay, I’m going to take Duke out on a short walk for you. Mom and Eri are coming for dinner and should be here around when I get back.”
I want to object, say I can take Duke for a walk and she doesn’t need to do anything else for me, but I know I’m not supposed to spend much time outside and I should accept the help while I have it. “Thank you, I’m gonna take a shower.”
Mama gets Duke hooked up in his harness and disappears quickly, giving me some true alone time for the first time since last week. The apartment feels so quiet compared to the hospital, so I play some music on our Bluetooth speakers while I shower.
When I get out of the shower and start to get dressed, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, naked. It’s so bad I can’t look away. My ribs are all visible and my hipbones stick out more than they should. My sternum is defined and my arms look like sticks. I then notice how hollowed out my face looks. I knew I was losing weight and getting smaller, but what I see in the mirror is far more concerning and jarring than what I expected.
I wonder if any of my non-workout clothes will fit. I’m already the smallest size in jeans that I can find, so if they’re too big I’m simply out of luck in the pants department and will have to check the kids section to buy anything new.
The changes in my body are noticeable, and I know Cal will have something to say about it when I see him.
I miss him. I miss him so much it hurts. I wish he was here with me. At the same time, I dread seeing him. I’m scared of telling him everything that’s going on and I know that he’s going to know something is up when he sees me. He’s going to ask about it. Everything is pointing me to telling Calum in San Diego and not in November, which wasn’t my plan, but now I don’t see how any other option is feasible.
It takes a lot of self discipline to tear my eyes away from my reflection. I head into our closet to find clean clothes to put on, immediately going to Calum’s side for a sweatshirt before grabbing a pair of comfy shorts from my dresser. In baggy clothes, my sickly small frame isn’t as noticeable.
By the time I’ve dried my hair and make myself a cup of tea, Mama is back with Duke, saying Mom and Eri will be here soon. I put the kettle back on so they can also have tea once everyone is here.
I take a few minutes to try to tidy the kitchen and do the small amount of dishes I’d left behind before I had to get admitted. Duke follows me around the apartment the whole time, making me feel bad for leaving him here alone for a while. I fill up a Kong with peanut butter to keep him busy and as a treat, running it over to his bed to lay down with.
As the kettle starts to whistle, a knock sounds on the door before it opens. My little brother Eri runs inside at full speed.
Eri and I have a big age gap between us, but we’re pretty close considering we don’t live together and he’s 16 years younger than me. My moms fostered kids for my entire childhood, and Eri was placed into their care at a few days old. They ended up adopting him and named him after a constellation, just like me. Eridanus.
“Orion!” Eri yells, his clumsy footsteps echoing around the place. He finds me quickly, pummelling into my hip with his tight hug.
“Eri!” I cheer, bending over to pick him up. He’s not that heavy, but he feels heavier today, and it takes a lot more energy than I’d like it to for me to hold him.
“Do you feel better?” He asks in his kiddish voice. His L sounds more like a W.
“Yes, much better,” I tell him. I push his dark brown hair out of his eyes so I can see them more clearly. I do feel better, but I definitely still don’t feel that great.
“Where’s Calum?” He asks. His dark brown eyes panoramically scan my apartment, searching for his favorite person on the planet.
“Eri, we told you, Calum is working. Remember?” Mom turns the corner from the foyer into the kitchen, giving me a knowing smile.
“Oh yeah!” Eri says. He then starts to pout. “I miss him.”
I laugh, leaning forward to kiss his soft cheek. “Me too, buddy.”
“Here, wanna go look at his toys?” I ask him, setting his feet back onto the tiled floor in the kitchen.
Eri lights up and nods, and I grab his hand to lead him over to Cal’s small collection of Legos.
While Eri and I mess around — gently — with Calum’s Legos, my moms are in the kitchen. They clean up, much to my dismay, and they order our dinner without asking us what we want. I’m updated with this news when Mama leaves to go meet the Doordash driver and Mom tells me they’d ordered Thai food.
I appreciate the free dinner, I just wish they had given me the opportunity to pay for my own food.
Everyone digs into their food. My moms share a mix of drunken noodles, pad thai, and pad see ew, all with tofu, while Eri eats chicken gyoza and edamame. I pick gently at the drunken noodles, which were ordered for me, but they know I won’t eat much, which is why they’re also eating from my styrofoam container.
As we’re eating, I get a Facetime call from Calum. Thankfully, I’m in a setting where I can answer and not have to conjure up some scenario for being where I am. I’m just home, with my family, which doesn’t require some kind of explanation.
I accept the call quickly.
“Hi!” I say, smiling brightly when I see his sweet face on my screen.
Calum grins instantly, his eyes lighting up and his whole face turning into a smile. “Hello!”
I pan the camera over to my family, just letting him know they can hear everything he says. They all wave, and Eri runs back over to my side so he can squish his small head into the frame next to mine.
“CAL!” Eri yells, his face showing far more excitement than mine.
“Eri! Hi, bud, it’s so good to see you!”
“We got here and you aren’t here!”
Cal frowns. “I know, bud, we’re in Australia right now, but we’ll be in San Diego in a little over a month! Did your sister tell you you can come to our show?”
Eri gasps. “No! Sissy, why didn’t you tell me?!”
I fight the urge to wince and plaster on a fake smile. “Sorry, buddy, I wanted it to be a surprise.”
I hadn’t wanted to ask my family about that day until we were closer, until I knew how I was feeling and how Cal and I were doing. But, Calum just brought it up to my very naive brother who absolutely adores him, so that thought is long gone. Now they have to come. Eri won’t forget. He’ll ask me about it all the time.
“I can’t WAIT!” Eri yells. His smile is so wide I would feel like the biggest asshole ever to tell him he can’t come. He has to come.
“Me neither, buddy,” Cal says. “Is it OK if I talk to your sister alone for just a sec?”
Eri frowns, his pout making me feel bad, but I understand completely. I want to talk to Cal alone, too.
“I’ll call you tomorrow, bud, does that sound okay?” Cal asks, trying to alleviate the drama that Eri is on the verge of bringing.
Eri lights up at the suggestion. “Yeah! Call Mama tomorrow!”
Calum nods. “Sounds like a plan, big guy. I’ll call as soon as we land in Canada.”
“Okay! Bye, Cal! I love you!”
“Love you too, Eri. Be nice to your sister!”
Eri rolls his eyes and says a faint ‘yeah, yeah’ and then he runs over to Duke, tackling him in a hug.
I turn back to my phone. “Hi,” I tell Calum, whose friendly grin turns into one of pure love. God, I love him.
“Hi, my love,” he says.
“Are you at the airport?” I ask.
Calum nods. “Yeah, we’re at the airport to fly to Toronto. Just wanted to say hi before we’re in the air for 14 hours.”
“Hi,” I tell him. Looking at his face on my phone screen, I can’t help but smile. His face is my favorite.
Calum sighs and it sounds sad. Why is he sighing?
“What’s wrong?”
His facial expression falls even more than it already had. He pouts. “Nothing, sorry. Just can’t believe we still have so long before we’re back in California.”
“Not that long!” I try to reassure him. I feel the same way, but I’m trying to be positive. I went a whole 19 years without him. I can live another month and week or so without him. Besides, it’s not really a life without him. He’s still here, just a little far away. “It’ll be here before you know it.”
Calum nods. “I know. Just hate being away from you,”
As the Facetime call with Calum ends, a mix of emotions lingers in the air. Home feels comforting with Mama, Eri, and Duke around. The chamomile bouquet from Calum adds a sweet touch, making me smile despite the challenging week in the hospital.
Back in the apartment I share with Cal, surrounded by Thai food and family, the sense of normalcy is a welcome relief. My cup of tea is warm, keeping the light in my heart burning as I wait for Calum to come back to this side of the world so I can deliver the devastating news I’ve been holding as cards against my chest. Some day soon, he’ll see the hand I’ve been dealt.
