How Competition and Price Increases Affect Small Businesses
Courtney Vasquez
ID# 47329692
Most everyone is affected by inflation but how do small business owners get particularly affected when in competition with large firms? My family owns a florist in Fullerton (Mums the Word, feel free to check us out) and as small business owners, I first hand am learning about the effect of competition and inflation/price increases.
Here's me, my dad delivering and my mom taking orders and doing some computer work and answering the phones.
Our business flourishes off of local residents calling, placing orders online, or stopping in for all their flower needs, from funerals to weddings to just brightening someone's day.
Here are some wonderful examples of our custom work along with the styles found on our website that many order. We do our best to perfectly fit everyone's floral needs.
Recently prices for flowers from large vendors that get shipments from all over the world, vases, gas for delivery vans, and other basic needs to run a florist have gone up. Along with this, we have had quality issues where many of the flowers coming in aren't fresh or our vases come in cracked, which is very frustrating.
We can't sell this :(((
With this drastic increase in prices, it creates more competition with local florists and we have to try to raise our prices but also still be the go-to florist and not drive our local customers out due to too high of prices. Unfortunately for us, we are also in competition with big firms, places like Ralphs, Trader Joes, and Costco, who all sell bouquets of flowers. This being the case, we have to fight alongside their extremely low prices since they are not as affected by the inflation in prices around the world. Because of this, we are barely able to raise prices since we are in competition and people would obviously prefer to pay a lower price, even if the quality isn’t nearly as high as ours.
Here are our website quality pictures (top) versus Trader Joes and Ralphs websites. That price for a dozen roses is crazy! Our wholesaler charges more than that for us to get roses from him!!
Along with this, there has also been a drastic increase in daily living expenses which not only affects us, but everyone around us as well. Since everyone has to pay more for everyday necessities and many are more worried about saving their money, people don’t have leftover money to buy things like flowers and other luxury items. This graph shows how as demand decreases we should be able to raise prices but, unfortunately, due to competition we have to keep prices low enough for customers to afford, but barely high enough to gain any profits.
Overall, while in competition with big firms, small businesses will continue to be pushed out of the picture and forced to fight for their right to be open and succeed as well as deal with price increases being a normal problem.

Gorgeous And Unique Vintage Wedding
Ageless fashion, vinyl records, and a thrifted floral brooch bouquet—every element of this unique vintage elopement transports us back to the swinging 60s. With the help of planner and florist Daydream Studio, Alida and Adrian fully transformed their backyard into a space that celebrated their love for the 60s and each other.
The couple exchanged intimate “I do’s” in a local California church—Simply Beautiful Civil Wedding Chapel—and then celebrated with a photoshoot and a sunset elopement reception.
The soft green and yellow floral arrangements by Daydream Studio, complimented the vintage staple wedding pieces. Because this couple is anything but ordinary, DreaSavyDesigns incorporated fun balloon details making for a unique backdrop.
Photographer Golden Vibes Photo froze these special 60s moments in time. Moments Alida and Adrian can relive over and over again. For couples looking to skip the “something new” and focus more on the “something old” you won’t want to miss this unique vintage celebration.

Who Says Your Bouchet Has To Be Flowers?
I’ve collected vintage 1960s flower brooch pins since I was a teenager and knew for some time my goal was to collect enough pins to create a beautiful vintage brooch bouquet for my wedding—a bouchet, if you will. It’s a forever special keepsake to remember our special day.

Misbehaving: being clever and wicked is a form of creativity
Suppose you forgot it was your partner’s birthday, but you know that they would appreciate the smallest of gestures, say a bouquet. It’s late at night and no florists are open. The cemetery on your way home has recently had a funeral, and you walk across the site and pick up a good-looking bouquet of roses from someone’s grave. You then head home, and the flowers are happily received by your partner.
Would you say that you hurt anyone?
This isn’t so much a moral dilemma as it is a creative misbehaviour. More specifically, it is an instance of the dark side of creativity – the side that few people acknowledge or talk about. Variously referred to as malevolent or negative, dark creativity uses the creative process to do something socially unappealing and guided by self-interest. You might not intend to harm someone else, yet harm is often a byproduct of your actions. In the instance above, you found an original solution (stealing flowers from a graveyard) to a problem (upset partner) that was effective (happy partner).
That is what makes up the crux of creativity – originality and effectiveness in behaviour.
But can we call such an act truly creative? For one thing, it violates moral codes of conduct (stealing); for another, it involves deception (omitting the truth about where you got the flowers).
Laypersons and academics alike have largely viewed creativity as a positive force, a notion challenged by the philosopher and educator Robert McLaren of California State University, Fullerton in 1993. McLaren proposed that creativity had a dark side, and that viewing it without a social or moral lens would lead to limited understanding. As time went on, newer concepts – negative and malevolent creativity – included conceiving original ways to cheat on tests or doing purposeful harm to others, for instance, innovating new ways to execute terrorist attacks.
Take a situation where you want to go to an event but the tickets are sold out. A creative person predisposed to deception and moral flexibility might come up with a solution involving bribing guards or pretending to be an organiser at the event. On the other hand, another creative individual with a more positive mindset might suggest creating a social-media campaign, for or against the event, to gain traction and recognition, and subsequent entry into the event.
The question for me and my academic adviser, psychologist Azizuddin Khan at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, was whether both solutions should be used, and whether both are truly creative. We looked at the problem through what psychologists call the four Ps of creativity – person (the individual engaging in the act), process (the strategy employed), product (the creative outcome itself), and press (the situation at hand.) After a series of five experiments, we concluded that negative creativity (product) is most likely to be displayed by highly intelligent persons, with subclinical negative personality traits such as psychopathy, especially in open-ended situations where deception can succeed. When creative people had a negative, morally questionable goal up-front, they were also more likely to lie.
We confirmed the contention that the dark side of creativity exists, and is one that it’s important to acknowledge and understand. People can get hurt in surprising and original ways by practitioners of this dark craft. And, just as important, an entire set of misbehaviours with the potential to help us learn more about human creativity may be going unnoticed and ignored.
What if, after knowing that the dark side exists, we consciously try to use it? Is that really always bad? Khan and I think it depends. Perhaps we won’t lie to get into a theatre – but what if a surprise birthday party for a friend requires sly and crafty planning, coordination, and a great deal of deception and misdirection? Can we then channel our dark energies to bring joy to others? Sure; but this can become a slippery slope. If the goal switches to planning a surprise theft, the same skills can harm others.
The dark art has been here all along. Just consider some innovative advertising campaigns deriding a competitor’s product in favour of one’s own: the cola wars, the burger wars and the coffee wars are all notorious for hinting at the competition’s lower quality, with direct or indirect references. Is this dark? Sure; it’s an underhand way to get through to your undecided consumer. Is it creative? Of course! Should it be used? Definitely – it’s meant to increase your profit in a competitive world.
Dark humour should take a bow, as well. To be able to come up with a dead-baby joke, one needs not only a punchline, but a macabre one. To be able to laugh at such a joke, one needs to have a strong stomach and keep moralistic thinking at bay. The now infamous comedian Louis CK uses black comedy in his acts as well as his namesake television show. His work was disturbing yet hilarious – until he went too far, joking about high-school students massacred with guns. One can argue that dark humour has the potential to psychologically harm others – but dark jokes made with intent to elicit laughter highlight the importance of distinguishing means and ends in creative pursuits.
What Khan and I found in our research is that no matter what type of creative misbehaviour you engage in, someone might get hurt. It is the extent of harm compared with the benefit that we must figure out. Negative behaviours can disrupt society, but disruption sometimes is good. That said, our study of dark creativity has led to more questions than clarity across a number of domains. How does one classify ethical hacking? Should we applaud new methods of suicide as creative? What degree of harm is required as a byproduct of a creative act for it to be called dark? Should we reject negative creativity if self-benefit is the primary goal? And is there really a distinction between a negatively and a positively creative person – or are they just the same people compelled by different circumstances in life?
McLaren’s argument emphasised that creativity, like all human endeavours, had the potential to bring about unchecked harm. But all said and done, it’s up to us how we wield it.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY ‘18!
We decided to celebrate early because we are such old souls, we do not want to head home after work, dress up, head out and then regret it the next morning at 7am, which is the timing we are due to wake up for the, life sucking yet very very required in order to eat, job we have.
So we celebrated the weekend before that. Being my usual high maintenance self, I chose 1919 Waterboat House for dinner. I wanted to dine on the rooftop bar instead of the indoor restaurant (which I insanely adore btw!!!!!), bcos I wanted a front view of The Fullerton Hotel. Oh, Fullerton, you fucking rock my world.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE ARCHITECTURE. I love majestic, victorian and romantic buildings the most - they have a special place in my heart. But truth be told, the view that night was mediocre bcos they had this gigantic umbrella for the live band which ruined the ambience I feel. And the FUL of Fullerton was not lit up lol. But still, very very romantic and dreamy. The Fullerton Hotel is probably my fav building in Singapore. EVER. Anyway, they didn’t serve dinner up on the rooftop, so we decided on Prive for dinner. I mean it overlooks the Singapore River at Boat Quay. Plus it’s at ACM, their buildings are of the same theme as Fullerton, so duh?
PS Cafe as our last stop was actually pretty impromptu, we were craving their double chocolate cake bcos all we had was a small plate of pasta (nigel ong had a burger with a side of chips), 2 glasses of prosecco and some fries. Ah, PS Cafe you win my heart and stomach. Not so much my wallet, but everything else. The place, the food, the service. I love you. Ok la, you too la Nigel Ong
I looked a little like a fool celebrating Valentine’s Day 5 days in advance, but prices were already being jacked up since 8 Feb wtf. BLOOD SUCKERS!!! (Or cock suckers? hm???) I love love love the roses Nigel ong got me, but they were a little bit more rustic and a little less commercialised looking I think I would have loved it even more. But thanks la, I never hiam, i am just giving constructive criticism on being original
So today, the actual day, I had actually ordered 2 different bouquets from 2 different florists to be delivered to my best friend, Zee and Nigel Ong. I signed off anonymously on both just to have some fun with them.
Zee’s card read: Happy Valentine’s Day! Her bouquet was to be delivered between 9am to 5pm to her office. But WHAT IN THE FUCKERY WENT WRONG WAS she had to leave her office by 2pm to attend to an event. LOL so the flowers will never get to her la. Plus she doesn’t have to go back to the office tmr bcos her office somehow just kindly gave them the day off. Fuck u la, usually benefits like shit (AL only 10 days) but suddenly give day off??? So the flowers from me to her will be rotting in her office for the next 5 days. Considering it’s ph for her from 15 - 18 feb ugh!!! i hope the flowers don’t die
So, Nigel Ong’s card read something along the line like: hey, you dk me but i’ve liked u for quite some time alr and i know u have a gf etc etc. And in the DELIVERY NOTE I wrote “Please make an entrance while delivering, make sure the whole office can hear HAHAHA thankssss” LOL the delivery dude just conveniently left this delivery advice on his flowers. Obviously nigel ong would realise it’s me bcos he knows im a lameass bitch ??? But i guess i achieved 50% of what i was looking for, i was looking to embarrass him HAHA his colleague brought the flowers up from security and passed it to him HAHAHAHAH
So he called me and i was still trying so hard to deny it was me (i already had my lines planned btw, i would be all like OMG WHAT A BITCH WHO IS IT HAVE U BEEN CHEATING ON ME???) but he told me about the delivery advice and i was internally bleeding.
BLEEDING BCOS IM OUT 200 BUCKS BUT NO ONE GOT TRICKED FML. The florist probably thought I was some kind of skank that had the audacity to send some other girl’s bf flowers on v day professing her love lol that’s why the bouquet he received also looked quite dead
But i am glad i made so many ppl’s days from my valentine’s day failure pranks. I AM GLAD I MADE U GUYS LAUGH at me.

I can’t remember when I started raising Monarch caterpillars. I’m thinking maybe five years ago, and I’m no expert, but I’ve learned a few things.
First, raising Monarch caterpillars from egg to butterfly is a huge commitment of time, energy and milkweed.
Asclepias incarnata, swamp milkweed, is a great nectar plant too, and it smells like bubblegum. See the assassin bug on the bloom? He will eat anything including your Monarch caterpillars. Best to bring your cats inside where they are safe.
Asclepias incarnata, swamp milkweed, pod.
Second, If you want to save the Monarch butterfly, plant milkweed. And, don’t just plant one plant in one area. Plant at least three or four plants in several areas throughout your landscape.
Learn about the different types of milkweed available in your area, including natives. Plant natives, but also, if you live in Oklahoma or further north, plant some Asclepias curassavica, tropical milkweed, too. Further south where tropical milkweed overwinters, you’ll need to cut it back to keep the Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE) infestation down. If you live further south, here’s more information about tropical milkweed. I’m not wading into the tropical milkweed controversy because I live in Oklahoma where tropical milkweed simply dies at the first freeze. I’ve also grown A. incarnata, swamp milkweed, and A. tuberosa, butterfly weed. Of the three types of milkweed I’ve grown, Monarchs seem to like butterfly weed the least. In order to get them to feed upon it, it’s good to cut it back several times in a season for new growth. Otherwise, the leaves are tough. However, it is a wonderful pollinator plant, and I have it all over the garden.
Rudbeckia, ‘Becky’ shasta daisies and butterfly weed in my lower garden.
Asclepias tuberosa, butterfly weed, up close
One more thing about milkweed, if you don’t grow it from seed, you must make sure the nursery you buy it from has not sprayed it with anything, including organic pesticides. Organic or inorganic pesticides will kill your caterpillars, and sometimes, you can ask all the right questions and still get accidentally-sprayed milkweed. It happened to me last year. The safest thing to do is to grow your own from seed, and never spray pesticides in your own garden.
Monarch caterpillar condo. I don’t poke holes in my lids because I take off the lids several times each day to check on the caterpillars. That’s enough oxygen. Other people do poke holes. It’s up to you.
There are many things which can befall Monarchs, but I don’t want to discourage you. You win some. You lose some. In the wild, it’s estimated that the Monarch caterpillar survival rate is less 10% according to the butterfly experts at Journey North. If you raise Monarchs and have enough milkweed, the survival rate can go up to 85 or 90%, so occasional failures, while sad, are still the minority.
Monarch egg on milkweed leaf. This is very enlarged so you can see it easier, but they are about the size of a pinprick. I don’t have a macro lens, or I could get even more detail.
For the best survival rate, bring in only eggs and first instar-sized caterpillars. Some people will tell you to only bring in eggs, but I’ve had good luck with 1st and 2nd instars. Now, I should probably always follow my own advice, but occasionally, I go ahead and bring in a larger caterpillar. It’s hard to leave them out there in the wild. That makes me too much of a softie, and I lose some to tachnid fly, but it’s worth taking the chance as far as I am concerned. However, if you want the best success stick to the official party line: only eggs and 1st instars.
1st instar caterpillar growing into a 2nd instar as we watch.
2nd instar Monarch caterpillar. They are often called cats at this stage because they look like they have cat ears.
One of my three tropical milkweed stands. I also grown swamp milkweed and butterfly weed. The one the Monarchs like least is butterfly weed.
I start my eggs and first instars out in small plastic containers like these Sure Fresh Mini Storage Containers, 10-ct. Packs – Square. I use a plain paper towel and place the pieces of leaves with the eggs on them in the containers. I then wait for the small caterpillar to emerge. It usually takes two to three days. Once the tiny caterpillars emerge, I put a fresh leaf beneath them. You can get Water Pick florist tubes to keep leaves fresh. I bought some last week. Those tiny cats don’t eat much, and a leaf will last awhile in a florist tube.
Probably 3rd instar Monarch caterpillar in one of the plastic bins. Nearly time to move them to larger quarters so they don’t have to crawl through their frass (poop.)
I change out the paper towel once a day, and sometimes twice when cats get larger. They need a clean place to eat, and the photo, above, shows how quickly frass can build up.
Once they get to 3rd instar or 4th, I put them on milkweed that is pushed down into a cup. I like soda cups because I can push the stems into the straw slots, and there isn’t danger of a curious cat drowning itself. I’ve never had that happen, but there’s always a first time. I watch milkweed consumption closely making sure I don’t run out of fresh leaves. The caterpillars are very hungry as they grow, and I don’t want them eating each other. Yes, that can happen. Gross, I know.
Monarch caterpillars 4th and 5th instars. I have caterpillars in all of the five stages right now. Nearly all were raised from eggs. Here, I used a bottle with a small neck. I needed a lot of milkweed this morning.
Then, I wait for the 5th instars to make their chrysalides. I place the cats in butterfly habitats like Insect and Butterfly Habitat – 24 Inches Tall and this shorter one, Miraclekoo Insect and Butterfly Habitat Terrarium Pop-up (12 x 12 x 12), but I’ve seen people use other types of enclosures too. I try to keep all of my instar sizes separate so that I don’t have chrysalides and enclosing butterflies over still-eating caterpillars. That’s a no-no. There are lots of ways to do this, and I suggest, if you’re serious about raising Monarch caterpillars, you join one of the several groups on Facebook. I’m grateful for all of these Facebook groups because the members are so supportive and helpful. If the Monarch ever returns with the numbers and vigor it once had, these groups helped make that possible.
I wash the cages and bleach them with a weakened bleach solution at the end of the season. Then, I put them away until the Monarchs and other butterflies return. I’ve only raised Monarch and Swallowtails so far.
My Monarch raising setup.
Same habitat from the screen side.
I put these in the large habitat for extra room to hang their chrysalides.
The Beautiful Monarch is the largest group I know of. They give good, consistent info about the general raising and enjoyment of Monarchs. Raising Monarch Butterflies is another large group that I’ve learned so much from.
For more Oklahoma-targeted information, I’m a member of these two groups:
Oklahoma Friends of Monarchs and Monarch Initiative of Tulsa
Also, I want to once again recommend Kylee Baumle’s book, The Monarch: Saving Our Most-Loved Butterfly. It’s a good resource and has beautiful pictures too. Below is a photo of one group of caterpillars that are almost ready to pupate. The sound quality isn’t that great, but I was just doing it off the cuff.

To learn even more about Monarchs and the rush to save them, check out Monarch Watch. To learn more about migration patterns and such, try Journey North, a website that logs information from watchers throughout the U.S. They follow and show on maps the great migration now happening. On Thursday, for my birthday, I’m attending the Oklahoma Native Plant Society’s meeting where Matt Fullerton with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) will present information about the Oklahoma Monarch and Pollinator Collaborative. Did you know I-35 in Oklahoma is a major pollinator highway? We’re right at the center of Monarch migration, and I can’t wait to hear how Oklahoma is going to help save more butterflies. I think it’s exciting stuff. I hope you do too.
The meeting is on September 7, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. (6:30 for snacks and chatting) at 400 North Portland Ave, OSU-OKC campus, Room 196. Hope to see you there.
This post does contain Amazon affiliate links to help support the cost of my blog. I’ve bought all of these items so I can vouch that they work. Thanks for reading everyone.
