RIP Michael Ballhaus 1935-2017

An already sad week for celebrity deaths just got sadder. Cinematographer Michael Ballhaus has died at 81. 

After doing so much great work in Germany (notably with Rainer Warner Fassbinder), he made his way to Hollywood. He even did several music videos for Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and he collaborated with Prince on Under the Cherry Moon (who knew?).  He worked frequently with Mike Nichols, Francis Ford Coppola and his greatest cinematic relationship, Martin Scorsese. Between After Hours, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence, Gangs of New York and The Departed, they made a hell of a team! 

It should be noted, he also did great work in comedies, such as What About Bob?. Ballhaus was nominated for 3 cinematography Oscars. 

I had the pleasure of working with his son Florian, who was the DP on Definitely, Maybe.
