Wildcats (Part XVII)

MASTERLIST
Summary: Your “tried”, and in doing so, you had come oblivious to the danger from within
Pairing: Daryl Dixon x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Zombie apocalypse AU, living dead, zombies, guts, blood, guns, injures, mentions of domestic violence, a fist fight, imprisonment, talks about slitting throats, kissing, longing, angst, fluff, might miss some important warnings, but you know what this is about
+18, MINORS DNI
Notes: ALRIGHTTTT!!! these dorks are finally… “a punta de caramelo” JAJAJA ready to party, I think, enough build up… Alright…the timing in this chapter might be a little flimsy, but what’s important are those dorks so… let’s do this!
You waved Daryl and Aaron goodbye as they went through the gates and out of Alexandria, you wanted to be optimistic, but still, you still felt a bit sad that Daryl had left you here, you didn’t even trip once! Has it been so bad for him? you had such a good time. It had been a lovely day. But still, he had been right about the run the day before, so, if he said it, he must have a reason.
The dead had been buried, and even though your family had taken a big hit, you needed to keep going, this is what the new world looked like, you mourn your dead by keeping living, and that is how you needed to proceed.
Real or not you had a mission now that Rick had put on you, search for an alternative, a plan B, some houses to go to if Alexandria goes poorly.
Your meetings with Reg about “development” had been canceled indefinitely, of course, he was mourning his son, so now that Daryl was gone you had to keep your hands busy.
You had become comfortable in the days you had been here, and today, you were determined, you went to see a person that was going to help you get the skills that you needed to become stronger to approach the new mission.
“Espinoza”, you called with a wide smile on your face, she was already smiling when she turned, you found her by the trucks that needed fixing.
“... I just realized I don’t know your last name”, she said with a frown
“Well, it’s very native, ANYWAYS”, you said with a wide smile, “I wanted to ask you something…”
“Tell me”, she said
“Well… I can’t think of anyone better to help me improve my upper body strength”, you said softly, “I’m fairly good with guns, and my ax, but the other day back in Atlanta I could barely keep out a walker who fell on top of me, and neither the second one when he fell in top of the other…”
“Say less”, she said with a big smile, “I need to practice some new skills as well”
“You’ll help me? I want to be able to fight too, people, you know? fists”
“It’ll be fun”, she said with a soft smile.
You bit the dust like twenty times in the morning, until Carol managed to scrap you off the floor and into the house for a quick lunch, and then you spend the whole afternoon helping Rosita fix cars. Or at least those who didn’t have computers, those where your favorites to try and fix.
“So this, can be easily fix with a simple wielding, don’t let the shape fool you”, she said as you held up the broken hood of the car for her
“I always though radiators where a pain in the ass”, you said
“They are, they are easy to break, but easy to fix”, she said with a soft smile
“Great, you know what I was thinking? to install a good thick bumper in front of that truck… so we can run over walkers more easily”
“You know? i was thinking the same thing, but I’m worried about the weight, we would need to make sure to weld it good to the…”, the sounds of what must have been a window breaking interrupted you, followed by the sounds of screams and yelling. You both started running towards the commotion just in time to see Rick punching Jesse’s husband into the road.
“STOP IT PLEASE!”, screamed Jesse, trying to separate them as her husband was the one choking Rick into the grounds, but he pushed her away, making her fall. You ran towards her and helped her up and away from the fighting men.
“Dad! stop!”, Rick had the upper hand now and now it was Carl being pushed. Who was grabbed by Rosita.
“RICK!”, you called angrily, but he didn’t hear you, but he did hear Deanna as she came angrily.
“STOP IT RIGHT NOW!”, you hugged onto Jesse softly, as she grabbed onto you. She was crying, and in distress, you didn’t understand what’s going on, but you could take a pretty good guess.
“Hey, hey, everything will be fine”, you said softly, she barely nodded, “we are here for you, you’re gonna be fine”, you echoed
“You touch them again and I will kill you”, Rick threatened Pete, that’s his name. Jesse whimpered behind you
“Damn it, Rick! I said stop!”, demanded Deanna, only then Rick stopped pounding into that sorry bastard
“Or what? You gonna kick me out?”, he asked, there they were, those crazy eyes again. It was odd, Rick was wearing the constable uniform, his beard was trimmed and his hair combed back, but, his eyes, it was the same as that night, with the claimers. You didn’t even notice he had pulled out a gun until everybody gasped and stood back, at least, the Alexandrians did. You were so used to it by now it scared you.
“Put that gun down, Rick”, said Deanna, her hands in the air trying to calm him down.
A million thoughts ran through your mind, where did he get the gun? why?
“You still don't get it. None of you do!”, he said, waving the gun aimlessly, “We know what needs to be done and we do it. We're the ones who live. You, you just sit and plan and hesitate. You pretend like you know when you don't. You wish things weren't what they are. Well, you want to live? You want this place to stay standing? Your way of doing things is done. Things don't get better because you… you want them to. Starting right now, we have to live in the real world. We have to control who lives here”, his speech told you this was coming for a while, it made you tremble in your spot, you looked over at Rosita as she was as impressed as you, telling you she didn't know anything either.
“That's never been more clear to me than it is right now”, sentenced Deanna, uf, you better rush that search for a home, soon.
“Me? Me? You…”, he chuckled in a way that it was so dark it made you tremble, “You mean me? Your way is gonna destroy this place”, he said, his face was bloodied, so were his knuckles, “It's gonna get people killed! It's already gotten people killed! And I'm not gonna stand by…”, you didn’t even see her coming, Michonne had clocked him so hard in the back of the head that Rick collapsed into the ground.
An awkward silence befell all of those who were watching, Abraham came out of nowhere as you could only look at Rick, as your dreams collapsed around you.
“Please, place him in the basement of the apartments”, said Deanna gently, “until he can cool down, take the gun…”, she started giving directions while you could only follow Abraham and Michonne who had grabbed Rick and were taking him to the place directed by Deanna, also, Rosita and Carl followed you.
As you walked, you catched a glimpse of all those scared faces staring at you, at your group, like you were the worst criminals they had seen.
It was done, here it was, the crash, the collapse.
They were never gonna let you all stay, or worse, they were going to make you spell Rick
And if he was expelled, you were going to go with him.
Abraham left him in a small room, and Rosita brought things to patch him up, as she did while he was still unconscious.
Glenn came running
“Maggie will calm Deanna down”, he said softly, you looked at him with a frown.
“Does anybody know what is going on?”, you asked angrily, looking around the room, but nobody said anything
“This took me by surprise as well”, said Michonne
“What happened with that guy?”, Carol appeared in that second, looking angrily at everybody. “If all of us are here, it's going to look like we are cahooting”, you said
“Nobody saw me coming”, she said, “Pete had been abusing Jesse, and the children, I told Rick yesterday”, there was an awful silence.
“And where did he get the gun?”, you asked her, she shook her head
“I don’t know”
“...Nobody was doing anything?”, asked Glenn, “About Jesse and Pete?”
“No, he is a doctor”, Carol said, with a dark tone in her voice. You sighed, rubbing your face. Eventually, you all went away, leaving only Carl and Michonne with Rick.
Rick had taken his role seriously, he had beat up a guy who was beating his wife, and probably the children, the bastard deserved it, the tricky part was now…
The fucking gun.
You passed by the house where the armory was, and now, two Alexandrians stood by the door, one of them was Tobin, one of their toughest guys.
Well… shit.
You needed to think, so, you went to keep an eye on Tara, the calming environment of the infirmary was just what you needed right now. The night already falling over Alexandria.
. . .
He was so thankful he didn’t bring you along this time.
First, Aaron and him found a woman all torn out, tied to a tree, and an unknown man dismembered on the ground next to it. It was a horrific sight and even though you had probably seen worse, this was best.
They had to spend the night out there, in the car. They preferred it so, because they had advanced a lot, and at night, they had seen the man with the red poncho, and had better chances of finding him if he lit a fire again.
But the next day, they keep following the trail, and they had found something that look promising
But now? He was going to die, most likely.
He took a long drag of the cigarette he found, as he watched those ugly, decomposing faces, scratching the glass, trying to get to them.
It had been an obvious setup, (now that he thought about it), and now he was trapped in a car with Aaron, surrounded by walkers, and to get matters worse, an unknown group of deranged maniacs were coming his way, most likely, those who had been carving people, and their foreheads with a W
He was going to be the one to try to fight it off, as he looked at Aaron from the corner of his eye, Aaron was a good person, he had taken them to Alexandria, he had a husband, a home, he was a decent man, he deserved to be the one to live, Daryl was here to protect him.
But as he took another drag, he thought about his family.
Rick, Carol, Carl, baby Judith…
He thought of you.
Of your face, of your smile, of your arms around him yesterday when he took you for a ride, about the excitement he felt when he heard your voice whispering in his ear, about yours cent wrapped around him, he thought about how badly he wanted to be around you, with you… he thought about how much he wanted to kiss you, to hold you, and now… with how things were looking…
He was never going to get to.
He was proven to be right, in not taking you here, if you would have been here, things maybe could be worse, you could have been attacked, bitten or worse.
It was better this way.
Now he was never gonna know what it would be like, to be with you, to hold you in his arms, to kiss you. He liked you, and he just had come to realize it.
He looked down
“I’ll go, I’ll distract them while you make a run f’it”, he mumbled, “just let me finish my smoke first”
Maybe he could make it. He promised you he was going to come back to you, he promised, perhaps with one arm less, but he was gonna make it, he had to. He had to tell you.
Would you still want him with only one arm? hell, did you want him at all?
He had to find out.
He felt silly, thinking those things in a time like this, what did you do to him?
“No”, said Aaron, looking at him decisively, “this was nobody’s fault, we’ll do it together”, he nodded, Aaron wanted to get home as bad as he did, and they were gonna do it together.
And then, one of the walker’s heads was crushed by what looked like a wooden stick.
. . .
The very next morning, you woke up a bit startled, with everything that happened with Rick, you had forgotten about the archer. You ran downstairs, only to find Maggie making breakfast
“Hey, good morning”, she smiled at you softly
“Good morning”, you whispered, “Is Daryl back?”, she looked at you with a glint in her eye
“He didn’t”, she said, “but he and Aaron reported they were going to stay out there one night, so don’t you worry”, she said softly.
“Alright”, you said, but the fact that they gave notice, didn’t soothe your nerves.
“He is going to be fine”, she said softly, “but we need to focus on keeping the place they are going to return to”, she said, and you nodded
“I’ll go see Rick”, you whispered
“I will go and talk to Deanna”, she said, and exited the house.
You walked quickly, you needed to figure this out and the only one who could answer all your questions was Rick.
entered the room where Rick was, with Glenn, Carol, and Abraham, you needed answers, you needed to know what was going on. SOme of them acknowledge you, not all of them, but Abraham closed the door behind you
“Where’d you get the gun?”, asked Michonne
“You took it, right? From the armory? That was stupid. Why did you do it?”, grilled Carol, Rick’s face said it all, so you looked at the gray haired woman with suspicion, she was in on it, you realized as you looked back at Rick wide-eyed.
“Just in case”, said Rick, not taking his eyes off of Carol, but then he looked at you, and he seemed surprised to see your angry face.
“Deanna's planning to have a meeting tonight. For anyone who wants to…”, started Glenn
“To kick Rick out?”, asked Abraham, you didn’t say a thing you just looked around.
“To try”, said Carol
“We don't know that”, you said, finally
“Maggie's with Deanna right now. She's gonna find out what it is”, assured Glenn
“At the meeting, you say you were worried about someone being abused and no one was doing anything about it. You say you took a gun just to be sure that Jessie was safe from a man who wound up attacking you. You say you'll do whatever you want them to. Just tell them a story that they want to hear. It's what I've been doing since I got here”, said Carol, and you chuckled, you knew she was lying front the second she stepped through those gates.
“Why?”, asked Glenn
“Because these people are children and children like stories”, she said
“What happens after all the nice words and they still try to kick him out? They're guarding the armory now”, muttered Glenn, as you thought he was the one who was taking the same side as you, the concerned side
“We still have knives. That's all we'll need against them”, said Carol
“Well, tonight at the meeting, if it looks like it's going bad, I whistle. Carol grabs Deanna, I take Spencer, you grab Reg, Glenn and Abraham cover us, watch the crowd”, muttered Rick, and then his eyes landed on you.
“This is “trying” for you Rick?”, you asked him angrily
“We can talk to them”, said Michonne, “there is no need…”
“Yeah, we will. If we can't get through, we take the three of them and say we'll slit their throats”, said Rick as it would have been easy, “we did try, (y/n)” he said gently, “we tried, but this people don’t understand how things are now”
“Like at Terminus?”, asked Glenn, “where’re gonna slit their throats like they’re cattle?”
“No, we just tell 'em. They give us the armory and it's over”, said RIck, like he had everything figured out
“Did you want this?”, you asked him, “just making us try our best just in case so you didn’t feel bad about this?”, Abraham placed his hand on your shoulder and then you noticed how riled up you had become, taking a step forward, your voice rising. Anger taking a hold on you.
“No”, said Rick, looking straight at you, “I hit my limit. I-- I screwed up. And here we are”, he said, “I want you to stay here, that mission will have to wait, now, if you'll excuse me, I'm just gonna sleep some more”, he said, dismissing the lot of you.
How could you become so short sighted?
As you were trying your ebay and play house, your family was collapsing around you, Rick had crazy eyes, Carol was scheming right along with him, you had lost Noah, and Tara was in the hospital… Sasha was turning into a sniper, she spent all the time in the watchtower, and people had become actually scared of the lot of you, because of your aggressiveness. This was bananas, as Maggie, Abraham and Tyresse had actually reached a position of power in the matters of days.
But that part relieved you, actually, you wanted your people in power, because they knew what they were doing, not because they were gonna threaten to cut people’s throats out.
This was a whole mess
Were they going to expel Rick? were you going to go with him?.
You found a map of the state of Virginia, you opened it in the dining room table, and you began planning.
You could take a good guess where you were, and then there was Washington… you wanted to go to Washington, if they do expel you from here, that was your safer bet, to find a building and spend a couple of days there until you found something more permanent.
The map was pretty detailed, and you noticed groups of buildings near you.
“Is that a factory?”, you whispered, looking at the squared looking buildings in the map, that had been taken by a satellite a couple of years back. you certainly didn’t want to go there. DC was still the safest bet, especially if they evacuated most of the people.
But Rick won’t go
Rick wanted to stay here no matter what, he wanted to take the place.
And even if you weren’t comfortable with that, you were not going to fight it, to fight him, or Michonne or Glenn, or Abraham
Maggie and Glenn were building Rick’s defense, so you had to stay put, and try to stay calm.
It will not come to this, it will not come to that, to slitting people’s throats.
But if it did… Did that make you the bad guys? certainly not better than those psychos from Terminus.
You thought again about Daryl, about what he might think about all of this, was he in on it? It was weird that Rick was planning something and not including him. Was he in on it? You really hoped he wasn’t.
You watched the sunset through the windows, you didn’t even know where the whole day went, you had spent hours and hours over that freaking map, walking around the house, thinking about scenarios and possibilities, and freaking out.
Was Daryl going to spend the entire night out again? Was that alright? On top of everything else, you felt so nervous, he was gone… What was going to happen when he came back? Was he going to go onto the plan of threatening them? You had seen what he could do, he was quick with his crossbow and he was fiercely loyal to Rick.
Whatever it was, you needed to stand by your family, even though you didn’t agree to the plan, you had to see it through and see to it that nobody was going to get hurt.
You needed to go to the thing, what were they calling it? you didn’t remember. But you didn’t move a muscle, not a single one, you were afraid of what is going to become. They were not going to kick him out, the group was not going to allow it, instead they were going to take the place.
The decision had been made.
You were not consulted on it, and yet, you were expected to support it.
But you needed to go, and prevent the hostile takeover, you could, you only needed to be truthful. You were on your way out, when you heard the rumble of a motorcycle outside. You smiled at the thought of the archer. So you got out of the house in a hurry.
“Hey you’re home!”, you said happily when you saw him cross the porch to the house. You were so relieved, not only because you were worried for him, but because of everything that happened with Rick… But he didn’t even mind anything else. He came straight for you, he seemed driven, pushed by invisible motivations.
He encased your face with one of his hands, everything was so fast you barely had time to react, and he leaned in, and trapped your lips with his in a chaste kiss
You smiled into the kiss, grabbing his shirt.
This was happening, this was really happening and you wanted to make it last as much as you could, his hand traveled to the back of your head, to hold you steady.
All your thoughts and worries went away as easily as that. Everything was going to be alright, and he felt heavenly. He felt the same, kissing your lips was the best thing he had felt in a long while. He separated from you, even though he didn’t want to, you didn’t want to. But still, he needed to see your reaction.
“M’sorry”, he whispered against your lips, “I wanted to do that:”
“Took you long enough Dixon”, you said against his, and this time, you grabbed onto his shirt and you pulled him towards you, you kissed him again. This time, it was more intense, you actually heard him whimper against your lips, as you both took a deep breath into each other. Grabbing each other more tightly. You didn’t know how you were ever gonna stop it.
But of course a gunshot rang through the air, making you split up like the other was on fire.

Donald Glover Says Goodbye to Childish Gambino at Barclays Center
Childish Gambino – Barclays Center – August 27, 2024
Beginnings and endings: I was fortunate to see Donald Glover’s rise as Childish Gambino’s CAMP tour rolled into SummerStage back in 2012. At the time, Glover was still on Community and had yet to garner the critical praise he would for his own Emmy-winning series Atlanta. More than a decade later, the multihyphenate returns for a farewell swing as Gambino, announcing that Bando Stone & the New World would be the final album back in April. Now a father of three, he managed to take time away from his family to give a proper send-off to his lovable musical persona.
On the second night at Barclay’s Center, Glover brought up what he’d touted in an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe: “The live event is what makes it valuable to me.” Opening with welding sparks on the main stage to deflect attention from the B stage, the rapper emerged in a black latex spacesuit, singing “H3@RT$ W3RE M3@NT T0 F7¥,” an oversized helmet covering his face. Background about the tech that surrounded the space was provided as he made his way through the crowd on the floor, an icicle-like lighting installation at the center pulsating with twinkling luminescence.
Fans were hyped from the get-go and hands immediately waved side to side for “Survive,” leaving the multitalented artist to remark, “This might be the best show yet.” The first half of the set was mostly dedicated to more recent material including the KAYTRANADA track “Witchy.” The producer and DJ made a guest appearance walking down the runaway to join Glover, who put his falsetto on display.
Soon the latex coat was shed and a sea of cell phones peppering the arena like stars in the night sky accompanied a song written for people in love “Steps Beach.” Throughout the show, first-time concertgoers and “real fans” were acknowledged accordingly. The upbeat “Feels Like Summer” — setting the vibes for newbies — welcomed all New Yorkers to bask in the dog days of summer.
And those “real fans” erupted in response to a trio from CAMP: “L.E.S.,” “Heartbeat” and “Bonfire.” In a choose-your-own-adventure moment, the venue selected “III. Urn” over “II. Shadows.” He held back some choice singles to cap off the evening, and the downtempo slow-burn classic “Redbone” had Gambino proclaim, “Love you forever.” And after a brief dip backstage to have the end credits run, a flood of rainbow lasers welcomed Glover back for an encore with the emo opus “Lithonia.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

Adorn Your Home with the Breathtaking Beauty of Atlanta's Commercial Polished Concrete
Polished concrete has become one of the most sought-after choices for flooring, and for good reason. Its durability, low maintenance, and stunning aesthetic appeal make it a perfect fit for both residential and commercial spaces. In Atlanta, where homeowners and business owners are continually seeking unique ways to elevate their interior design, commercial polished concrete Atlanta is emerging as a top contender. With the expertise of professional services like Khays Services, you can transform your space into a masterpiece of style and functionality.
What is Commercial Polished Concrete?
Commercial polished concrete is a refined version of traditional concrete, achieved through a multi-step process that grinds, polishes, and seals the surface to create a smooth, glossy finish. The process includes polishing with diamond abrasives, making the concrete more durable and reflective. The end result is a highly durable, visually appealing surface that stands up to heavy foot traffic, moisture, and wear while adding a unique shine to any room.
This type of flooring is not only stylish but also highly functional. Its versatility makes it suitable for various spaces, from residential homes to commercial properties, such as retail stores, restaurants, and offices. The polished finish can be customized to fit the aesthetic vision of any space, whether you prefer a sleek modern look or a more rustic, industrial vibe.
Benefits of Commercial Polished Concrete for Your Home
When it comes to choosing flooring, it's essential to consider both aesthetics and practicality. Polished concrete offers numerous advantages for homeowners in Atlanta who want to make a statement with their floors. Here are some key benefits:
Durability and Longevity
One of the most significant advantages of polished concrete is its durability. Polished concrete floors are incredibly tough and resistant to heavy traffic, making them ideal for both residential and commercial properties. Unlike traditional wood or carpet, polished concrete won’t scratch, dent, or fade. This means fewer repairs and replacements over time, making it a wise investment.
Low Maintenance
Another reason polished concrete is so popular is its low-maintenance nature. Once the concrete is sealed, it requires minimal upkeep. Routine cleaning with a damp mop or soft cloth is all that is needed to maintain its shine. Unlike other types of flooring that may require waxing or special cleaning products, polished concrete makes floor care quick and easy.
Eco-Friendly
For homeowners who want to reduce their environmental footprint, polished concrete offers a sustainable solution. Concrete is made from abundant materials, and the polishing process doesn't require the use of harmful chemicals or excessive energy. Additionally, because concrete floors can last for decades, you won’t have to worry about frequent replacements, reducing the amount of waste you produce.
Aesthetic Appeal
The beauty of polished concrete lies in its ability to match a wide range of design styles. It can be customized with stains, dyes, and textures to achieve the exact look you desire. Whether you want a sleek, modern finish with a high-gloss sheen or a more matte, natural appearance, polished concrete can accommodate any vision. It can also be combined with other materials, such as wood or metal, for an even more dynamic design.
Improved Lighting and Visual Space
The reflective surface of polished concrete can help enhance the natural light in a room, making spaces appear brighter and more open. This is especially beneficial in smaller rooms or commercial spaces where maximizing light can make the area feel larger and more inviting. The glossy finish also provides a mirror-like effect, adding depth and dimension to any room.

Diversions #7: Additional progress
Wow, so much has happened since #6. Where do I begin? Should I try to recap my travels to Portland or to Atlanta for WordCamp or FinCon? Should I summarize all of the progress we’ve made on the addition to our home? Should I write about my recent upgrade to an M4 MacBook Pro? Or, do I focus on the updates that have come to the ActivityPub plugin that has me rethinking how I use my personal website (yet again)?
How about all of it?!
I’ve posted a few photos from Portland, though I have many more photos that I’ve taken on film that I just haven’t developed yet. This weekend I went to do exactly that and hit a roadblock. It would help if I had fresh chemicals around!
I’ve also commented on what happened at WordCamp and wrote some key takeaways from FinCon. So I won’t rehash any of that.
Instead, I’ll focus on the reminder that traveling (in general) and going to events has a positive impact on your outlook, your network, and your business. Not all of them can be directly measured or are reflected on the bottom row a spreadsheet – but you can feel them as you move forward. You may face a challenge and end up thinking of a company or person you met at an event that can help. In short; go to events.
The addition is moving along quickly now. This sort of project seems to be one where the beginning parts; planning, drawing, documenting, etc. are the slow parts. Then, once the work begins, it is difficult to keep up with.
Working from home affords me the ability to jog outside once or twice a day to snap a photo or two of the progress. I’m very happy that I’m not the one doing the work this time.
The foundation and floor base
I know snags are inevitable. In fact, the forecast at the end of this week already looks like it will slow down progress some. But that is how these sorts of things go.
The new lighter, faster 14″ M4 Pro MacBook Pro is really a delight to use. I hit a snag or two when upgrading the software that was Intel-only to their Apple Silicon counterparts (especially Adobe) but other than just a few hiccups — the upgrade/migration process is so easy.
My previous MacBook Pro was no slouch but this one is a screamer. Building projects, running local LLMs, or just having literally every single app open doesn’t seem to phase it. Using it as a laptop, something I was never able to do with my previous computer, is also really fun. I can actually get a lot of work done and the battery life is great!
My last bit of equipment upgrading is going to be a Thunderbolt dock and at least one external SSD. I need my port situation to be a bit cleaner and I’m hoping a dock will free me up to just have a single wire running into the laptop. And, as of today, I’m not backing up using Time Machine so I cannot delay getting a new SSD.
The social media landscape is a mess! Part of me loves the messiness. It is an interesting time and lots of people are experimenting with many things. New platforms, new ideas, new ways of sharing. Gone are the days of only one or two social networks thriving.
But another part of me is frustrated. I don’t really know what I want to do with my personal blog as it relates to the social web. I have the ActivityPub plugin installed, and it works well to distribute my posts onto the fediverse as a first class citizen. But it isn’t (and likely never will be) perfect.
If you’re at all interested in your website joining the fediverse, I recommend giving the plugin a try and learning how it works. This isn’t cross-posting. It makes your website “an ActivityPub endpoint” so that the account is your website (and/or its authors). It is very cool and interesting.
The reason the ActivityPub plugin has me rethinking my personal blog use, is that I can begin to see a future where all of my favorites, boosts, quote posts, etc. live here on my website – rather than my Mastodon account. But for that I’d want to restructure my site’s design a bit (and likely my RSS feed). Of course, if I explore this at all I’ll write about it.
Regardless of how this phase of the social web shakes out I know I’ll be publishing here on my blog.
An edition of Diversions wouldn’t be complete without some links:
Christoph Rauscher’s newsletter – I like how Christoph publishes his newsletter. Lovely.
Live at Delia’s Third Happening – Site Nonsite live album recording.
Vault – By Commercial Type.
Rex Brasher Field Notes – Lovely little film about Brasher’s work as well.
Rachel Binx’s website – Go take a look.
Apple Pay Plates – This is me buying Crocs or fanny packs.

Transforming Warehouses: The Aesthetic Power Of Polished Concrete Flooring
In today's competitive industrial landscape, warehouses are no longer just storage facilities; they have become integral parts of businesses that value both functionality and aesthetic appeal. A key element in achieving this blend is the flooring. While warehouse floors take on heavy foot and machinery traffic, they also play a crucial role in the overall look of the space. One solution that has gained immense popularity in recent years is polished concrete flooring. If you're working with a Concrete Resurfacing Contractor, you’ll find that polished concrete floors can truly transform your warehouse into a sophisticated yet durable environment.
Why Polished Concrete? The Blend of Durability and Elegance
Polished concrete has become the flooring option of choice for many industrial spaces, and it’s easy to see why. Combining strength and beauty, polished concrete floors offer the best of both worlds. They are incredibly durable, with the capacity to withstand high amounts of traffic and pressure without showing signs of wear and tear. Beyond durability, they provide a sleek, modern look that can elevate the overall aesthetic of your warehouse. With polished concrete floors in Atlanta becoming more sought after in major industrial areas, many businesses are reaping the benefits of both durability and elegance.
Cost-Effective and Long-Lasting: The Financial Benefits of Concrete Polishing
Another significant advantage of polished concrete is its cost-effectiveness. The upfront cost may be slightly higher compared to other flooring solutions, but the long-term savings are substantial. Polished concrete requires minimal upkeep, and because of its longevity, it doesn't need frequent repairs or replacements. This makes it a financially sound investment for businesses aiming for long-lasting flooring solutions that won’t break the bank. Moreover, polished concrete helps reduce lighting costs, thanks to its reflective properties, adding to its financial appeal.
Low Maintenance, High Impact: Simplifying Warehouse Upkeep
One of the most attractive features of polished concrete is how low-maintenance it is. Unlike traditional flooring, polished concrete doesn't require special cleaning products or procedures. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are enough to keep the floors looking immaculate. This simplicity in maintenance means less time spent on cleaning, which is a huge benefit for warehouses that run on tight schedules.
Enhanced Light Reflection: Creating a Brighter, More Productive Workspace
Polished concrete floors have the unique ability to reflect light, which can be a game-changer in warehouse settings. The polished surface brightens up the space by enhancing the natural and artificial light present, making the environment feel more open and less confined. This increase in brightness doesn't just make the space more pleasant; it also helps improve worker productivity and safety by making it easier to spot obstacles or hazards.
Tailoring Polished Concrete to Match Warehouse Design
One of the reasons polished concrete is growing in popularity is its versatility in design. Businesses can choose from a range of finishes, colors, and even patterns to customize the floors to suit their warehouse's specific aesthetic. If you're looking for a top provider, Extreme IFC, LLC, located in Georgia, is known for its expertise in Polished Concrete Flooring. Their comprehensive services cover every aspect of polished concrete installation, including grinding, polishing, densifying, sealing, and burnishing.
Polished concrete is quickly becoming the go-to option for not only warehouses but also retail and commercial spaces. By incorporating grinding, chemical hardening, and polishing techniques, companies like Extreme IFC, LLC ensure that your floors are durable, easy to maintain, and aesthetically pleasing.
In conclusion, polished concrete flooring offers a remarkable combination of aesthetic appeal and practicality. From enhanced light reflection to ease of maintenance and cost savings, the benefits are endless. For warehouse owners looking to invest in a durable and elegant flooring solution, partnering with a Concrete Resurfacing Contractor is the first step to achieving a polished, efficient, and stylish workspace.

My Programmable Roommate - Part 1
My Programmable Roommate - https://mjcwrites.net/books/my-programmable-roommate
Part 1
Cybernetic Brain Implants are all the rage now. They allow people to control their PCs, cars, game consoles, and more wirelessly and remotely with just their mind. It seemed like everybody was getting them.
You even saw employers offering to get them for their employees since it meant the employer could monitor their employees more efficiently. Theoretically it also means the employee would also be much more productive. At least, that's what they want you to believe.
Alex's roommate, Jake, recently got one of those implants installed in his head. Yep. Made an appointment with the place that sells them and then a robo-doc cut into the back of his neck and inserted the thing at the base of his brain leaving a flesh-colored plastic access port right there at the base of his skull. A magsafe connector provided a physical connection to his implant, otherwise everything is done wirelessly.
From a purely technological standpoint it's a pretty neat device. First, it's powered by blood sugar! Glucose. You tend to see people with these types of cybernetic implants with quite a sweet tooth. Now you know why. Onboard micro- and neuromorphic -processors with machine learning provide a bidirectional translation of the brain's analog signals to the digital signals of the rest of the world.
⁂
Their apartment was quiet, except for the soft him of Jake's gaming rig. Theirs is a small two-bedroom flat with small bedrooms located across from one-another, a large, shared bathroom, and a large communal space that housed their kitchen, dining room, and living room.
It was in downtown Atlanta, and for the money it really wasn't that bad of a deal. But being in the heart of Atlanta, crime was always an issue. The fact there was an Atlanta Police precinct in the ground-floor of their apartment building meant that crime inside their building was thankfully almost non-existent.
Outside though, several sirens wailed, and the strobes and lights of various flying vehicles etched colorful patterns on their adjustable opaque windows that shielded the outside views to the goings-on inside their space.
Inside their apartment Jake was in his room, laying on his bed, in the middle of a game as usual. A holographic display hovered above his head with a rapidly evolving scene of fighting and combat of some fictional galactic army of soldiers fighting some alien species. He was perfectly still, the only movements from him were those of his eyes darting back and forth watching the game. He was perfectly in "the zone".
⁂
Alex leaned against the doorframe to Jake's room and covertly watched his roommate Jake for a few minutes.
Jake was not a typical "gamer geek" that only cared about his games and neglected his body. To put it bluntly, Jake was in incredible shape. He was tall; about 196cm in height, and weighed 75 kilos.
::: info That's 6'5" and 165 lbs. in Freedom units, or almost 12 stone in Commonwealth units.
:::
He also had the metabolism of a fruit fly because it didn't matter what he ate, Jake never seemed to gain any weight. Alex was always a little jealous about that. Throw in his chiseled jaw, perfectly lithe and lean body, and impressive bulge, and it was no wonder Jake could get any man — or woman — that he fancied.
Which didn't seem to be many, because in all the time Alex has known him, he doesn't remember Jake ever dating anyone, let alone bring anyone over.
⁂
"Another victory, huh?" Alex said, breaking the silence and making his presence known.
Jake paused his game, and the holographic display disappeared. He sat up and gave Alex a cocky smile. "Yeah, just another day fighting the Drex."
The Drex were a fictional race of arachnid-like creatures from a planet in the Alioth star system within Ursa Major.
Alex entered Jake's room and plopped down on his bed next to him. "How's the campaign going? Have you killed the Queen yet?" referring to the video game.
Jake shrugged, swinging his legs off his bed to sit down next to him. "Honestly, I think I need a break," he said. "This implant is amazing, but it's starting to feel like work."
Alex raised his eyebrow feigning curiosity. "How so?"
Jake moved his finger to the back of his neck where the implant interface was and tapped it lightly. "It's like... I can access my PC directly, control almost anything with my thoughts. It's efficient, but sometimes I forget to just relax. My phone, my email, news feeds from the Internet... It's like I'm always connected, you know?"
"Can't you turn all that off?"
"That's just it, it's never really turned off. It has to stay connected in the event I might want to do something," he said.
Alex's mind started to race. This was his chance. He had been researching Jake's implant ever since he got it a few months ago. Now he had the perfect excuse and opportunity.
"You know, Jake, I've been reading up on those things," he said. "They say you can actually tweak the settings, even upload new subroutines. Maybe there's a way I can make your implant more 'user-friendly'."
Jake's eyes lit up. "Really? That sounds awesome! You think you could make it better?"
Alex nodded, trying to hide his excitement. "Of course! Why not?"
⁂
Over the next couple of days Alex dug-in and researched the shit out of Jake's implant, its manufacturer, and poured over all publicly available material.
Much to his delight he found a SynapTech Solutions developer program for Jake's NeuroLink implant that was open to anybody, and it was free. All he needed to do was sign-up, and he was able to download a complete developer environment along with an implant device emulator complete with a virtual "human" it was installed into.
After a couple of days Alex — with laptop in-tow — approached Jake, who was sitting on their couch watching TV.
"Up for a very minor test?" he asked Jake.
"Sure!" Jake replied.
"I want to see if I can connect to your implant," he said. "You should get a pairing request from my laptop."
Jake nodded, and Alex began the pairing process to try to connect his laptop to Jake's implant. Almost immediately Alex saw Jake's implant show up as an available device he could connect to, and he started a pairing request.
As soon as he clicked on "Connect", Jake's eyes widened, and he gave Alex a thumbs up.
"I just granted you access," he said.
⁂
As soon as Jake had granted access to Alex's, his laptop's screen began to fill-up with telemetry and diagnostic information about Jake's implant, and surprisingly... his body.
Jake's vitals, such as his heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, glucose levels, oxygen levels, carbon dioxide levels, and various other measurements were plotted on Alex's screen, like a medical-type display. Jake's implant was able to determine his vital signs from simply interfacing with his brain, putting a digital spin to the analog world that we all are.
"Dude, this is incredible," he said. "Jake, you need to see this." He set his laptop down in front of Jake.
"That's amazing," he told him, marveling at how some of the graphs and displayed changed as he moved his head, his arms, and his torso.
Holding his breath immediately saw his oxygen levels start to immediately decrease, and his carbon dioxide levels go up.
The implant was even tied into his senses. There was a "blocky" black & white mosaic that showed the signals from his eyes as his brain interpreted them.
A wave form generator showed the audio signals coming from his ears as they were processed and interpreted by his brain.
But the most impressive display was a stick figure representation of Jake. As he moved his arms, head, neck, etc. the stick figure adjusted to show his approximate position. The implant was able to read and interpret Jake's sense of proprioception!
"Damn," Jake said, a little taken aback by everything about him that was shown on Alex's screen. "About the only thing you can't do is read my thoughts it looks like."
Alex was giddy but looking at Jake he could tell Jake was anything but comfortable with what he was looking at. "I don't know if this is a good idea," he said, slowly closing Alex's laptop and handing it back to him.
⁂
Jake's body language made it clear that he was no longer interested in Alex doing anything more with his implant. Seeing how deep his implant was embedded in his mind was shocking and alarming to him.
On one hand he had to know that the implant would be deeply embedded in his mind. How else could it interface with his mind and control everything it was connected to?
But on the flip side, knowing at a deep level that your implant is invasive, and seeing just how invasive your implant is with your own eyes, are two entirely different things.
If he was going to hack into Jake's implant he'd have to come up with another plan.
⁂
Alex spent the next couple of days searching the dark web looking for any information... tools, or utilities that might aid him with jail-breaking Jake's implant. Of course, for any of them to be successful Jake would have to be unaware of what he was doing.
Yet Jake's implant still showed up as an available device to connect-to on his laptop. Jake hasn't revoked Alex's permission to connect to his implant.
«This was going to be too easy,» Alex thought to himself.
Then he found it. The file NeuroLinkJBv1.2a.app certainly looked promising.
::: warn Warning! Running the NeuroLinkJBv1.2a.app will result in the target's implant rebooting. To avoid detection, do not run this program while the target is awake or conscious.
:::
⁂
That evening after both he and Jake went to bed, Alex waited until he was certain Jake was asleep. This was easily confirmed by him connecting to Jake's implant with his laptop. Jake's heart rate, respiration, and lack of movement or activity in most of his body confirmed as such.
Now all was left was to launch the NeuroLinkJBv1.2a.app and see if it was successful.
Either Jake would be alerted that Alex was trying to hack his mind or he wouldn't. The app could either destroy their friendship or... well...

«God mode?» Alex immediately took note of. «What the hell does that do?»
It didn't really matter though. Not right now at least. Right now, it was almost 2:15am and Alex was tired as fuck and desperately needed to get to bed. Testing out Jake's implant "jail break" would have to wait until tomorrow.
⁂
The next morning, Jake was up early, blissfully unaware that anything had been done to his implant. Alex was still dead asleep when he left and went for a jog around Piedmont Park. Alex didn't even hear him come back, but the sound of the shower eventually jostled him awake.
Groggy and disoriented he stepped out of his bedroom just as Jake stepped out of the bathroom with droplets of water glistening on his chest and abs. The white towel wrapped around his waist did little to obscure what lay beneath.
“Hey,” Jake said, nearly bumping into Alex in the narrow hallway. “Rough night?”
“Something like that,” he replied, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “How was the run?”
“Pretty good. Saw a dead hooker on 10th.”
“Jesus, really?” Alex’s eyes widened in shock.
“Yeah,” Jake said, shaking his head. “But on a brighter note, there’s a new gay bar that just opened on 11th.”
“Seriously? That’s awesome!” Alex perked up, a grin spreading across his face. “We have to check it out.”
“Thought you might be interested,” Jake said with a playful smirk.
“Definitely,” Alex replied, excitement bubbling in his voice.
⁂
Jake, still wearing only a towel around his waist, followed Alex into the kitchen. That's when Alex remembered... Simon Says v1.0...
"Hey Jake," he said, "take off your towel."
Jake flashed Alex an incredulous look. "Fuck you I'm not taking off my towel," he said. "What's gotten into you this morning?"
"Nothing," he apologized. "I'm sorry."
Jake finished pouring himself a glass of orange juice and headed to the living room.
"Jake?" Alex asked. "Simon says... remove your towel," finishing before Jake could respond.
And just as he was about to sit down, Jake undid his towel and let it fall to the floor then sat down on the couch and turned on the television. Completely naked.
«Holy fuck... holy fuck.... holy fuck...» Alex said to himself.
Alex followed Jake into the living room a few seconds later with his Hot Pocket and picked Jake's towel up off the floor. Jake, who was watching the TV, didn't seem to notice that Alex was holding his towel. The same towel that was wrapped around his waist just a few seconds ago.
"You gonna sit down?" he said, motioning for Alex to take a seat.
Alex sat down but couldn't keep himself from staring at Jake. Did it really work, or was Jake fucking with him? Does he even realize what he did? What he's doing? Or what Alex could do to him? No... He needed to test this further.
"Jake... I left my coffee in the kitchen; can you grab it for me?"
"What am I, your servant? Get it yourself," he replied curtly.
"Please?"
"You can get your own damn coffee, Alex."
"Simon says... bring me my coffee, Jake."
Right on cue, Jake immediately got up from the couch and his 196cm body and rather long and thick appendage gracefully went into the kitchen and casually brought a coffee cup to Alex. Jake then he sat back down nonchalantly and resumed watching the TV.
"Thank you," Alex told him.
"For what?" he replied.
Alex had no memory of something he just did only seconds ago.
«Holy fuck...»
Holy fuck, indeed.
