Did you know there are snails that spend their entire lives swimming or drifting in the ocean? 🐌✨

Instead of crawling over reefs, rocks, or kelp, their muscular foot has evolved into a pair of "wings" allowing them to take advantage of the Earth's largest habitat—the open waters between the sea's surface and the bottom.

Pteropoda, the Latin name for these snails, means wing-foot. They are planktonic animals, so they are primarily carried along by the ocean's currents. Pteropods are a widespread and diverse group and play an important role in the oceanic food web.

There are two distinct types of pteropods—those with thin, lightweight shells and those that have completely lost their shells.

Shelled pteropods produce a net of sticky mucous to trap marine snow—dead plant and animal remains, poop, and dust that falls from shallower water. These particles are constantly sinking through the water column, and there is still plenty of nutritious material left in them. The ability to passively collect your next meal in a drifting net is a great energy-saving adaptation to living in the open ocean.

This extraordinary deep-sea resident is Avocettina bowersii, also known as a snipe eel. The snipe eels in the family Nemichthyidae have thin, tweezer-like jaws that bend outwards. It was long debated how these fishes eat, but we now know that their tiny, backward-facing teeth, almost like velcro, allow them to capture small crustaceans and bring the prey into their mouths with a series of quick chomps. ⁠⁠ 

Snipe eels can be found at depths between 92 and 641 meters (300 and 2,100 feet) and measure about one to two meters (three to five feet) in length.

Why I Like It:

This is the type of song that makes me want to cruise with the windows down. I often find myself air surfing with my hand out the window when I listen to it. It’s one of those songs that everyone kind of knows. It plays, and at least someone else in the room knows the words. I like doing it because my pop voice turns it into a completely different sound but still keeps the vibe. Anyways, do yourself a favor and listen to this while cloud watching.

Been going through some serious art block this year, right up until the residency. Didn't do any planning and was super nervous I wouldn’t be able to come up with anything creative during the residency. But moving to a new environment, learning a new skill and starting from scratch was a good change of pace for me and helped me get out of the rut I was in. Got to be more flexible: being ok with changing the color, giving up on blocks that didn’t work with the image, figuring out a way to make it work. Carving and -some- parts of printing are meditative to me now, seeing the pile of carved wood shavings at the end is also super satisfying. Definitely had a lot of late nights to chase that high of being productive again, and printed too much again(WHY?)?! Now that I'm back in my potato hole I got a lot more things to figure out to try and keep this momentum going.
