SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones & Micky Dolenz Live @ Disney Epcot May 7, 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLydK9B_EmA Starting in 1995, Davy Jones and band appeared annually at Disney Epcot, routinely booked for 3-5 days, 3 sets a day, with dates usually set around Mother’s Day (though I recall some as early as March). People from around the world attended, with some scheduling their vacations around it. Davy brought me in on keyboards for the 1997 series (I remember Sandy Gennaro winging broken drum sticks at me) then every year from 2005 to 2011. We had great food, fun, laughs, and good times, and the Disney staff treated us like royalty. For me it was an opportunity to catch up with Floridian family and friends. Sometimes guests such as Flo & Eddie would drop in, and on this occasion, Micky Dolenz literally rolled on to the stage. Hard to believe that 13 years has flown by since we were up on that hot stage by the lake—and it was the last time we did it. Day 29:  #mayvinylchallenge :  Soundtrack Sunday 🔺️ Frank Zappa - 200 Motels [1971] "This whole event is a fantasy that occurred touring on the road... Touring can make you crazy, ladies and gentlemen. That is precisely what 200 Motels is all about." A lot can be said about this surreal cult classic.  One of the first films to be shot entirely on videotape and THEN transferred to 35mm film, the look is beyond unique.  Shot almost like a television special, the movie was shot in 5 days.  Featuring the brand-new lineup of The Mothers (featuring Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of the Turtles (later, Flo and Eddie), Aynsley Dunbar, George Duke, and a gem of a performance by chauffeur/bass player Martin Lickert), as well as Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Theodore Bikel and original Mothers, Jimmy Carl Black, "Motorhead" Sherwood, and Don Preston, the movie is a Zappa wonderland, mixing mental musings, glimpses into the groupie scene (shout out to Janet Neville-Ferguson and Lucy Offerall), the real life conversations of the band along with the music, played by the band and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. There's a lot of layers to this movie in regards to it's back-story.  Maybe I should make it a WAXING VINYL episode.  Just maybe... Alls I know is that it is one of my favorite films simply because of its unorthodox manner in every regard, and the amazing music.  And I truly believe in the overall message, as I have experienced it... The new Mothers 1971 set has me revisiting one of the most contentious of Zappa’s bands. What do you think of the Flo & Eddie years—great, or gimmicky and tiresome? For myself, it’s far from Zappa’s best band and not a starting point I’d pick for anyone. But for a fan (and your girl here is a serious fan) these years are indispensable, even though I swear if I hear one more groupie in-joke I’ll throw Howard Kalyan through a sliding glass door. 200 Motels and Fillmore East are both a bit impenetrable (though good once you’ve cracked them), so the way in is to listen to side 2 of Chunga’s Revenge then side 2 of Just Another Band From LA. To me that’s The Best of Flo & Eddie. The new Live at the Rainbow set sounds fantastic too… you can actually HEAR Zappa get pushed off the stage! One wail of feedback and his whole career changes trajectory. Almost too good to be true.
