5. where do you buy books? usually a local bookstore, occasionally barnes and noble if I can't find it locally. my one rule for myself is never amazon.

11. what non-fiction books do you like if any? my two favorite non fiction books of all time are a people's history of the french revolution by eric hazan and the antifascist handbook by mark bray. would definitely recommend both.

17. top 5 children’s books? oh god let's see if I can remember. matilda by roald dahl was good. also the warrior cats series, percy jackson/mcga (both by rick riordan), also not technically a children's book but ender's game was a book I read as a kid and really loved.

🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success?

If I have accurately expressed the concepts/characterization/images/feelings/elaborate and extended daydreams in my head, such that other people can now experience them, too. Of course, the inherent disconnect between my personal experiences and those of everyone else on the planet, which shapes our respective interpretations of all future experiences down to literal connotations of words, makes this nigh impossible…but sometimes you can get pretty close.

Why did you start writing fanfic?

Oh, man, that's...a long time ago. ^_^ I started writing fanfic because I was 14 and excitable and I wanted to be a Dragonball Z character. I kept writing fic because I was 15 and kind of horny. Then I stopped for a while, and then I started again because my college roommate was extremely into Firefly and it inspired me. Stopped again, because I had so much to do for school, and then started back up in 2012 because The Avengers came out and that inspired me, and I haven't really stopped since.

I'd been a fan of the musical since I was really young, but I didn't join the fandom until after the 2012 movie came out. (Yes, I was one of that crew. XD)

I... honestly? Probably because of e/R. And Aaron Tveit and George Blagden, specifically. And then it spiraled out from there. XD

..............is it really embarrassing to admit I don't remember? Like, it was Wangxian for a really long time, and I devoured everything about them? But lately I'm just not... mentally there anymore? I suppose the closest I have to a favorite ship these days is Nielan? But there's no particular ship that I'm like I NEED TO READ ALL THE THINGS FOR THEM.

5. who is your favorite character (and maybe why?)

...and this is probably why. XD Jiang Cheng is my favorite character, hands down, end of discussion. And I realize this is very likely me projecting and that MXTX has Word of G-d reasons for why he hasn't married, but they're not in the book, so they're not canon: HE IS THE AROACE BB OF MY HEART in this fandom. And there are many many other reasons why, but I don't really have the spoons to elaborate right now. XD

Fic: Alive or Alive

For @flo-nelja, a Billford making use of the prompt 7! Set during Ford's portal years, warnings for some violence and possessive!Bill.

Alive or Alive

It doesn't take long for Ford to develop a reputation in the Multiverse. It's hardly a flattering one; he has become known for his hatred of Bill, and while that has gained him alliances and friendships with some, others have become his enemies. He avoids the latter the best he can, just as he avoids Bill himself, but while Bill rarely leaves his domain, the lesser enemies can make themselves nuisances.

"All right, Stanford Pines, come on out!"

Which is why Ford is in trouble today. He is on a lonely desert planet, in the ruins of some ancient structure that might be a castle or even a temple, and there are bounty hunters outside it, with various weapons drawn. Ford still has some ammo left for the one measly gun he has, but he knows there is no way he can take them all on.

"Look, dead or alive, we're taking you to Bill Cipher!" The leader of the bounty hunters, a tall, gangly creature that could almost pass for a human if not for their overly long limbs, sighs dramatically. "You can make it easy for yourself or hard."

"Make it hard!" Ford shouts in response, cocking his gun. He wishes he still had some smoke bombs he could use for distraction; his best bet for an escape would be to make his way to the vehicle that the bounty hunters arrived on, but that would require sneaking out unnoticed, and the only ways out are in the front of the structure, where the bounty hunters are.

"Dead, then!" The leader, the only one among the bounty hunters who hasn't drawn their weapons, now fixes that by pulling out two guns. "Okay, guys, let's get ro-"

"Hold up, not so fast!"

The words themselves are nothing; it's the voice that speaks them. Ford can feel his face drain of all blood, his palms turning sweaty around his gun.

One of the bounty hunters, the largest one in the group, has several eyes all over his body; that's why Ford can tell that all those eyes have turned from something vaguely purple into a bright yellow, and his mouth, which is full of razor-sharp teeth, has twisted into an oversized grin. Shouldering the bounty hunter's big rifle, Bill walks in front of the whole group, turning to face them while his back is towards Ford.

The urge to just shoot Bill in the head is strong, but Ford resists it; he knows it wouldn't really get rid of Bill, and he needs to see how this plays out. He watches on as the bounty hunters kneel down one by one, bowing their heads down.

"Mr. Cipher," the leader of the group says in a hushed tone. "I didn't realize you were here with us."

"To be fair to you, I wasn't until this very moment! But you had to go make a fool of yourself, and left me no choice expect to take this hulk over." Bill crosses his arms over his chest, tilting his head sharply to the side. "Now, what's with this 'dead' business? Didn't I make it clear that I want Stanford Pines specifically alive?"

So, Bill is going to berate the bounty hunters as if they are a bunch of school children. It's ridiculous, but it's good for Ford; with the attention of the bounty hunters drawn to Bill, he can now attempt to sneak over to their vehicle. So he backs up slowly from his viewing spot, to gather his things while listening to the leader reply:

"Mr. Cipher, with all due respect, you didn't specify anything about his state." The leader's voice is trembling, but he persists: "First one to bring him to you gets their own galaxy, thats' what you said."

"And what about that screams that I would be okay with receiving a dead Ford?" Bill laughs, but the sound of it is threatening. "I love a good corpse, but not like that! Perhaps I should make my stance more clear now that I am here."

By now, Ford has made his way out. He crawls in the sand, determined to make it to the vehicle, but when he hears the entire bounty hunter group gasp at the same time, he can't resist a glance in Bill's direction.

The sight is a little disappointing; all Bill has done is move right in front of the leader, and butted him in the face with the rifle. But what makes Ford's heart really race is the words Bill says:

"So my stance is this: I want Stanford Pines alive and alive only. If he dies when you catch him, when he's in your possession, when you are delivering him to me, whatever, you will die too. And it won't be a quick, pleasant death." Bill's grin has only grow wider, showing too much gums. "I promise you right now, it will be longer than any strangulation and more miserable than being lit in fire. That's your fate if you deliver me anything other than Ford who is still breathing and snarling about it."

The leader groans, holding onto his bleeding face as he backs up from Bill. Bill lowers the rifle down, and looks straight into Ford's direction.

"Isn't that right, Fordsy?" Bill shouts. "You won't escape me, not even to death!"

Ford responds with a shot.

Le Comte de Monte-Cristo

The new movie adaptation of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo was magnificent! And the soundtrack as well!

I was a bit worried that 3 hours would be too long, but absolutely not. After all, the best adaptation ever is the anime Gankutsuou, which consists of 24 episodes of 20 minutes, i.e. 8 hours.

Eugénie is canonically in love with her female friend. <3 Also, reminder (or new information, since even French schools don't teach us that...) that Alexandre Dumas, one of our most famous authors, was Black.

Huh. Oh. Damn, that's hard. Not sure there are enough people around to make a pool work buuut let's try.

I'll keep to one by fandom/author, it's a good rule. (Yes, it was hard to chose.)

And thus I realized that sometimes I really like a book but can't think of a specific character I like, while long-forgotten stories still have their fav which I couldn't keep out of the last. Ah, well.

... Is there a pattern there? Nooo. No pattern at all.

The White Snake--The first time Yang sees the snakes around Tian is the day after they went to the opera.

A Hard Call--Myung-gil had known he’d lose some men assailing Choi Tae-ho’s house, which was almost a fortress, but he hadn’t thought he’d have to kill any of them himself.

all i will take are the consequences--Min-woo wouldn’t have guessed on his own that Lee Jun-seong and Song Jae-hyo were fucking.

Don't Want to Walk Alone--“An engagement?” Li Xiangyi raised his eyebrows.

At first glance, since I went in reverse chronological order, the main trend I immediately notice is that I've been writing longer first sentences lately. I think that's pretty immediately obvious if you just glance at this list. Some of the shorter ones (chasing their own fantasy, a shared punishment, A Small Black Puppy, Loaded Unloaded) are even their own separate paragraph.

However. Reverse chronological order of posting/updating is deceptive. "A White Snake" was posted recently, but I actually wrote it in September; "A Hard Call" was updated recently, but its first chapter was posted in October, and even then, it's a follow-up on a fic I wrote even longer ago. So... it's more like I usually write short first lines, but occasionally I do go longer, without much of a chronological element.

Otherwise... idk, there's a lot of variation. I don't often start with dialogue, but I do on occasion, especially when the fic is going to be short or fast-paced. I never start with imagery--"Chi and Mei" comes close, but it's only half imagery, really, the other half just orienting the reader in a canonical scene. "The White Snake" has a second and third sentence with more imagery, but the first sentence is more context. I often start with introspection, but I also often start with action. It's fun to try out different things.
