Well...

It's a mix of things. It's largely due to the fact that the sinnoh e4 is so forgettable in general. I mean, you have a bug-catcher, nicer agatha, a clown, and a bookworm. I think this is mostly because Cynthia overshadows them greatly, but this is expected.

So I wanted to give the sinnoh e4 an underdog story, with backstories that shape them into the people they are (explanation below):

You learn that Aaron's not just a bug-catcher. He is also a deeply traumatized individual and it manifests in his behavior throughout his time as an elite. He's also the first teenager to become an elite in history, and the first bug-type specialist. He's sixteen when he achieves his title, and throughout the course of the story you see how this changes him - and it's not always good. Having that level of fame as a teenager with the type specialty that's regarded as the weakest does something to your brain. Unresolved past traumas + achieving so much fame + being a teenager + having the need to prove yourself as one of them (being the league) = a very bad time. It will show. It won't be pretty.

You learn that Bertha's not just a "nicer" Agatha. In fact, she really isn't that much nicer than Agatha. Her backstory is more intense than hers. She had escaped from her cult at seventeen after realizing her entire life was a lie and became a trainer. She stopped believing in her cult, but that mentality of hers doesn't leave her. And it shapes how she tries to help a war-torn Sinnoh when she becomes an elite. I think what makes Bertha "nicer" than Agatha is that she genuinely adores her fellow colleagues like her own, but other than that, Bertha has no problem using people if it means that Sinnoh can prosper. Agatha definitely uses people, but she doesn't pretend to be your friend like Bertha does. She is very straightforward and blunt and will say to your face that she's only using you because you provide something for her. Bertha, however, is very two-faced.

You learn that Flint's not just a clown. He grew up in a loving home, but he also grew up in the worst part of Sunyshore, wracked with poverty and crime, which shapes his behavior. Poor areas have a higher rate of disabilities/disorders/mental illness etc,, such as Flint having ADHD in the fic, and his younger brother Buck is autistic. Flint can be hotheaded, impulsive, and reckless - however is very, very loving and gentle to those who are more vulnerable than he is. You see this with Buck. You also see this with Volkner, and he's dating him in the story. He stops Volkner from killing himself. He encourages Volkner to get help. He's very good with Buck. He's fiercely protective of those that are smaller than him. If you're on Flint's bad side, good luck - but if you're on his good side, he would take a bullet for you.

You learn that Lucian's not just a bookworm. He is a psychic who was born out of wedlock, a non-psychic mother who died when he was young and a psychic father. He had been abused by him - who would use his powers to hurt Lucian. His father dies when he's a teen, and Lucian gets happy. He has such a hatred for his father that he continues into adulthood after his death because Lucian is a mentally shaken man. He becomes the first psychic elite in history at twenty due to Bertha seeing potential in him (also, Bertha was friends with Lucian's mother in their youth who helped Bertha deconstruct). While all the signs point to someone that would become a serial killer, he becomes more pleasant to be around due to Bertha. Lucian would've been 10x more insufferable without Bertha to help him. He is capable of friendships (Flint, Shauntal, Bertha) and a romantic relationship (Cynthia). Lucian can be a good person despite his traumas. He tries.

I also wanted to keep Cynthia's ruthlessness so people wouldn't forget her either. When I was writing Cynthia, I took into account on how we're so afraid of her because she's one of the most difficult notorious final bosses in Pokemon. I translated that into other people in the story having the same feeling, which is why there's a whole arc of Cynthia defeating other leagues for fun before becoming Sinnoh's champion. But she also has to deal with so much shit. Sinnoh's pretty wild in the story, especially with what happens later, but there's always something happening in Sinnoh.

I hope this explains the ruthlessness you see from them. You also have to remember in this verse that Sinnoh had been creamed in a world region war, which continues to pass on to present day. Trauma passes down from generation to generation. It doesn't go away. Every problem that these characters have can be traced back to the war.

Volkner’s eyes widen for a fraction of a second when he first meets Barry. He quickly schools his face back to its usual bored, ‘this-is-beneath-me’ look, and Dawn almost believes that she’d imagined it.

And then Volkner calls.

(“Your friend; the blond one. How…” a deep breath. “… how is he?”)

Cynthia, champion of the Sinnoh Pokémon League and current champion of the Pokemon World Tournament, is incredibly doting.

There are, however, differences between how she dotes on Barry and everyone else, small as they are. The sweets. Ruffling his hair.

(“— and it’s almost like… almost like aunt Ethan,” Dawn tells her mum over the phone. Lucas’s battle against Lucian is over and Barry is just about to start against Bertha. Her mother stays silent so long that Dawn is sure the call ended at some point without her realising it. And then she sighs.

“How is Pip?”)

Volkner looks mortified that Cynthia decides to pull up a chair next to him. She orders them both drinks; something she hadn’t done while she’d been with Maylene, or Aaron, or — and then she ruffles his hair.

It’s surprises Dawn that Volkner doesn’t snap at Cynthia when she gives him a parting hug.

“Flinton!”

There’s smile on Flint’s face goes stiff. He’d been giving Barry and Dawn a tour of the Sinnoh Battle Frontier. They turn to see a blond man in a long green coat running up to them. Dawn is absolutely sure Flint will get knocked over, but the man — the Battle Tower’s Tycoon, she realises — comes to a stop right before him.

“Mr Palmer,” Flint says, bracing himself as Palmer gives him what looks like an extremely painful hug.

Palmer laughs. “How many times do I have to tell you to drop the ‘mister’, huh?” A mischievous glint appears in his eyes. “Unless… you finally ready to be my in-law?” Palmer wiggles his eyebrows and Flint looks like he wants the earth to swallow him up.

And that — wow.

Palmer finally turns his attention away from Flint. He grins and scratches the back of his head. He looks surprised, though only a little bit. “Barrington! Didn’t see you there.”

Barry’s smile is painfully awkward. “Hey dad.”

Volkner and Flint are whispering to each other in a corner of the room. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Volkner’s agitated gestures have to do with Palmer, who’s having a stilted attempt at normal conversation with Paula and seems oblivious to the fact that Barry and Jan look like they’d rather be anywhere but Palmer’s table.

The tightness around Paula’s eyes and Volkner’s agitation lessen when Cynthia finally arrives. Barry and Jan look relieved as they go to her, assuring her that she isn’t late at all. Cynthia gives them each a hug; Barry, Jan, Paula, Volkner and even Flint.

Everyone pretends not to notice the way Cynthia hesitates briefly before giving Palmer a hug, wooden and slightly shorter than the others.

And when everyone begins to converse again, and Lucas and Buck look in Dawn’s direction, all she can do is shrug.

[Notes:

I was just asking myself a lot of questions about Palmer, something along the lines of ‘gamefreak wouldn’t place four blond characters who look almost similar in the same region without good reason, right? Right???’ This feels less like a story and more like an answer to my own question that just happens to be a narrative. Whatever.

And then my brain ran away with the idea. Don’t get me wrong, I love Palmer, but whatever you’re thinking about Palmer’s character by the end of this is likely what I wanted you to think.

For clarity: Paula is Barry and Jan’s mother, Cynthia is Palmer’s sister, and Jan is indeed short for Janington.

I might post this on AO3. Who knows (not me). Whatever the case, I hope you had fun reading it.]

Close ups + much headcanons/rambling under cut

- I like to think Elekid is the 3rd pokemon Volkner got (after Shinx and Pikachu).

- Shinx was the 1st to evolve and it really inspired the other two to become stronger as well ! They all wanna reach new heights together, Volkner is very proud of them.

- Elekid is an energetic dumb cutie. He tends to cause problems by accident.

- He's likes to assist Volkner's machine tinkering even tho he doesn't understand a thing about it. He's super useful to provide power for the machines but at the time Volkner lacked experience and elekid lacked power control so I can imagine things went wrong a few times aksksksks, like machine explosions and such. Still, they were both hyped !

- Volkner's electivire absolutely LOVES music and it has been the case ever since he was a little elekid

- One day Volkner lended elekid his headphones and he was overjoyed ! He loves loud music and feeling the vibration it causes in the body.

-His music taste is close to Flint's. I think they also have a lot in common personality wise ! They end up becoming great buds with time

- Talking about music, idk if I mentionned it but I love the idea of Volkner playing electric guitar and Flint playing drums. I think they would play together in Flint's garage or something

- Luxray sometimes use his X-ray vision to help Volkner find lost picks haha (we don't talk about the time he saw it in another mon's stomach)

- I think the 1st time Volkner went to Flint's home, there was this moment Flint's mom being like "Oh you must be Volkner ! Flint talks about you a lot 🤭" and Volk would be looking at Flint like "...👀" and Flint would be like "AAA I do NOT (he does) ANYWAY, let's go to my room". And he also would give Volk a house tour until he shows off his drums in the garage and that would be when they both discover the other plays an instrument.

Btw about family :

- I don't think about parents/family a lot in pokemon but I like to think Flint has like a lively family !

- I picture Volkner as an only child so I think he's intrigued by Flint's life in his house, with him having a brother and all ! He likes the calm he has at his own home but Flint's home has such warmness, it's not bad

- Maybe Volkner got his love for tinkering from his dad. Like he would sitting there watching his dad repair stuff while he teaches him how to do it and stuff !

Some less important detail about elekid/electivire :

My sister mentionned how you're supposed to trade for electabuzz to evolve into electivire but I decided to ignore this because I prefer the thought of Electivire having been by Volkner's side since he was a kid. Now he could been traded with Flint's magmar then immediatly traded back once evolved but I think that trading mechanic is kinda stupid and will use the fact that in PLA none of that is necessary.

Because Elekid would get along well with Flint, if he belonged to Flint at some point it could be interesting ! But I still prefer the thought of him always being with Volkner, with him having things in common with Flint being a coincidence. For balance it's funny to think magby/magmortar has similarities with Volkner hehe. Maybe I'll dig on that on day...

Good question! Honestly, I just really like the dynamic of rivals to lovers. I’m a sucker for that (see Reguri, Flint x Volkner, Steven x Wallace). Nothing really deep with this but generally rivals to lovers is a go to ship dynamic for me when it comes to canon x canon ships

This caused the Proprietor's eyebrows to rise in surprise. No one said anything for several seconds. "Motherfucker I didn't mean we'd actually cut his nuts off!" "You just said you wanted to!" The Proprietor exchanged an odd look with his Houndoom. "That was a hypothet... hypother... Arceus, Volkner what is wrong with you?" Volkner could only answer by shrugging.
