My favourite Sinnoh starter is Piplup— not only because it’s an adorable penguin but also because this means your rival (I’ll call him Barry) will pick Turtwig.

Given that the choice is made during a very intense wild Starly attack, it’s not like Barry purposely picked the starter that would be strong against yours, though this is the case. No— I think it’s funnier if he chooses Turtwig by chance.

Your hyperactive, hot-headed childhood friend chooses the little grass tortoise. Not the energetic fire monkey, or the swift penguin pokemon. The tortoise, who has the lowest speed stat of all the Sinnoh starters.

Imagine Barry charging into the Oreburgh Gym, certain his Grass starter is going to obliterate Roark’s team, only to realize that he’s left his dear Turtwig back in the cave, he screeches with frustration and dashes back out to find it.

Or when Barry runs into you and demands a battle, only to shout “WAIT A MINUTE!” and look back as his Grotle trundles towards the two of you, and when it finally reaches you, “—OKAY, LET’S GO!”

Or, at the top of Spear Pillar, when your Pokemon are already exhausted, you’re faced with both Mars and Jupiter who are ready to trounce you, guess who stomps up the mountain? It’s Barry, on the back of his Torterra
