Song Review: The Infamous Stringdusters - “Down the Road”
Perfect harmonies and flawless playing help establish the Infamous Stringdusters’ reverence for Flatt & Scruggs on the former’s remake of the latter’s “Down the Road.”
The track was “a staple of the Flatt & Scruggs canon and one they recorded early in their career,” Andy Hall said in a statement. “It has what we like to refer to in the bluegrass world as ‘drive.’ Not too fast, but powerful.”
Indeed. And the ’Dusters bolster that drive as each player - Hall on Dobro, guitarist Andy Falco, banjoist Chris Pandolfi, fiddler Jeremy Garrett and bassist Travis Book - gets in his licks after they announce the song with:
Down the down/down the road/got a little pretty gal down the road
The track follows “I’d Rather be Alone” ahead of the A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs, the six-track EP arriving April 21.
Grade card: The Infamous Stringdusters - “Down the Road” - A

One of the funniest ways to start a war would be to go to bluegrassers and tell them harmonica is the forgotten bluegrass instrument
#extra war points bringing up McCoy in the later Flatt & Scruggs albums#I know it would be stirring a bee's nest but it'd be so funny#thatbanjobusiness#That Banjo Business#blabbing Haddock#General Banjo Business

Album Review: The Infamous Stringdusters - A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs
Though it’s an impossibility in the real world, the progressive and regressive team up for beautiful music on the Infamous Stringdusters’ A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs.
Over six songs spread across 20 minutes, Andy Hall (Dobro), Andy Falco (guitar), Chris Pandolfi (banjo), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle) and Travis Book (bass) square dance and two step Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs out of the 20th century and into the 21st.
The instrumentation and recording technology may be different, but the feeling is, if not the same, familiar and comfortable. And with that, the Dusters accomplished the difficult task of creating a paean that’s got the goods to make new fans for both the honor-bestowing and honorees while not offending existing denizens of either camp.
It’s sweet. It’s just too bad A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs is so short.
