Late post 'cause I think I pulled something in my shoulder on my drawing arm. So you're getting two things today. Here's the first.
Flaming Carrot was invented by Bob Burden in 1984. The strangest man alive, Flaming Carrot is a superhero who can induce in himself in a state of "Zen stupidity" and has a mask of a continually burning carrot, also he has flippers. In case he needs to swim...
Interestingly from the pages of Flaming Carrot we got a supehero film in '99! That's right, Mystery Men, the one with Ben Stiller, William H. Macy and Hank Azaria, were originally supporting characters in the comic!

Mystery Men by Kinka Usher.
This movie is a combination of a lot of things that I like:
An underdog story, gaudy superheroes, creative sets/visuals/costumes, and some of the funniest actors of our era. Loosely based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics, Mystery Men takes place in a world where not only are superheroes for reals, but there are way too many of them, putting some of the superheroes with the lamest powers on the Z-list.
The main thing I don't like about this film is the ending. Throughout the movie, none of the Mystery Men's powers work quite right. Then suddenly, at the end, everything just works for no good reason. That's lazy writing. What should have happened was the heroes should've figured out a way to turn their weaknesses into strengths. Instead, their powers just work out of the blue, "THE END."
Still, I really like the production value and this movie has some of my favorite fanboy jokes. Also, I find Mr. Furious relatable from time to time...

Bob Burden's unique humor applied to Batman, for a pitch he made to DC comics in the 80s:
Tumblr media
Burden writes:
A remnant from my 1980s DC pitch which would have been about doing it up as a late 50s early 60s series of stores that would champion all this oddball stores from back then, bringing back characters like Mogo the Bat Ape, the fire breathing dog and such. The world鈥檚 finest miniseries would have had Flaming Carrot joining the Batman/Superman/Robin team with amusing consequences.
I can't see DC (back then) allowing Flaming Carrot's hilarious and bizarre influence permeate their 2 biggest cash cow characters; but damn, it would have been glorious.
