Hey, I love your Maiko + Izumi headcanon!

We can tell in TLOK that Zuko and Izumi are alone, and that Zuko is very set on protecting his daughter. But I hate the headcanon that Mai died giving birth, because it’s just too sad for me to handle.

So, sorry if I ask you to write something so sad, but supposing that Mai died a few years prior the start of TLOK (you decide how many), can I ask you for some headcanons regarding that time, Mai’s death and what happened next for Izumi and Zuko?

Hey Flameo. How do you think Mai and Zuko were as parents? I'm curious about your headcanons.

* My headcanon is that Zuko freaked out during Mai's pregnancy and Izumi's birth. Due to his trauma with Ozai and intenso fear of ending up messing jis daughter up, like Ozai messed him and Azula.

* With the help of Azula (redeemed, but still retained her characteristics in a mellowed down manner), the Gaang, Ty Lee, Ursa and Iroh. He gains the courage to start bonding with his daughter.

* Zuko is very soft and and prone to spoil her. Mai is the strict parent.

*They're less moody and have a healthy relationship.

*Mai taught Izumi how to read and write, Zuko taught her basic math, history and Art appreciation. But they ultumately decided to send her to a school with both peasants and royals.

* Druk is her protector and partner in crime.

* Azula is a tough-love aunt, she loves her niece, but won't coddle her as "pathetic Zuzu, you're being too soft."

uhh it's a tough question you're asking anon. but i do love thinking about mai and her emotions because she's such an interesting and sometimes confusing character. i think she might've made a good fire lady since she is from a noble family and has good education, plus her father was a politician so i think she has enough knowledge and understanding. she's strict, she's sharp, she's witted... she looks like a ruler and imagining mai in royal clothes like a fire lady is my jam.

the question is would she really want to? i don't think so.

in the series mai's life was quite complicated, it was proved by cricket leigh (mai's voice actress that is a therapist now) that mai had/has depression disorder. we saw mai as a person prone to apathy and boredom but i think it was a coping mechanism. i have this huge headcanon in my head where mai is fighting depression, finds herself again and things that are making her feel alive and joyous (and it has nothing to do with zuko or ty lee or people in mai's life). fire lady's position is definitely not mai's priority. i think she would've hated to do all of this.

maybe healed and emotionally mature mai could've become a fire lady but i don't think it would've been her genuine choice. she would've done it purely for zuko, just because she loves him and always stays by his side and doesn't want him to struggle so she helps him to rebulild and fix broken to the core fire nation. but honestly she would've just changed one cage to another, the golden one, zuko's cage. maybe she would've willingly done so.

i think mai as a character has so much depth and vulnerability. even if she becomes a fire lady, she wouldn't be just another silent addition to the fire lord. i think she'll always want to do something else.

honestly, i don't know. it's hard to say..

sometimes i have a bit of inspiration here and there but it's definitely not enough to write fics or big, detailed headcanons. maybe one day i'll get that creative again but for now i'm just another citizen of maiko nation (i still follow new artists and maiko creators, they're all amazing!!)

once little izumi says to zuko she wants to see grandpa and zuko is like, "sure, we can go see grandpa iroh." but izumi replies, "not that grandpa!" and zuko says, "oh, you mean grandpa ikem", but izumi says "no!", and zuko thinks with a horror that his daughter wants to see ozai, until izumi grins proudly and says, "i want to see grandpa aang!!!"

Do You HC Izumi As A Bender

honestly? i can see both ways!!

izumi is a non-bender: zuko defends her right to the fire nation throne, assurance they love her and support her no matter what, special bonding with her mom and uncle tom-tom.

izumi is a bender: the same assurance they love her and support her no matter what, morning meditation with her dad, special bonding with her dad, uncle iroh and auntie azula/kiyi.

so, the perfect compromise for me is that izumi is a late bender. all of them get used to the thought that she's a non-bender, and her family is totally okay with it because it's not the bending makes valuable their precious 'zumi, and then she suddenly starts creating fire. i hc already teen izumi who learns kid basics and tries so hard (it's not easy for her), and cries every night, thinking that she's a failure and disappoints her dad who's the fire lord, and her auntie who's a firebenfing prodigy.

and then zuko decides enough, and teaches her by himself all the nuances slowly, patiently, step by step, and says that she'll always be the best for him and he's so proud of her. and then zuko takes her to the sun warrior ruins to see the masters.

a lot of father-daughter fluff, comforting and bonding <3

i seriously need the scene where mai and toddler izumi go through one of the palace halls, holding hands, and suddenly mai stops and bends down to her daughter, whispering, "look who's there!"

and little izumi immediately turns around and notices the familiar scar and the familiar shiny crown - zuko just has left the throne room - and izumi smiles widely and squeals "dada!!!", and runs toward zuko, literally flying into his arms <33

thinking about a scene where 3-5 y.o. izumi sneaks to her father's study and climbs on his lap. zuko, not taking his eyes from the scrolls in front of him, settles his baby on his lap and gives her a piece of blank paper, a pen and ink, so izumi can draw while he's reading. but after a few moments, bored izumi tugs his robes and gives him adorable eyes and pleads, "can you draw me a dragon?"

zuko sighs, "sure" and postpones his papers. he draws something similar to a dragon's head and asks, "what does this dragon have?" izumi screams, "eyes!", so he draws eyes. zuko asks, "what else?" and izumi replies, "nose!", so zuko draws dragon's nostrils.

after every "what else?" he draws dragon's eyes, body, legs, wings and a big tail, scales and claws, fire that their dragon breathes. when it's finished, izumi claps her tiny hands and begs, "please, please, please dada, draw a turtleduck!"

zuko draws a turtleduck, a koala-sheep, an ostrich-horse, every animal izumi asks him about. zuko completely forgets about his work. they draw until mai catches them and pretends irritated because "oh, agni! zuko! you were supposed to look through the papers for tomorrow's meeting!"

"you finally seem to be enjoying yourself"

does that mean when zuko met mai for the first time after his banishment he saw the girl he didn’t use to know in childhood?

it's true, mai was always quiet and restrained, and very-very shy. but also there were moments when she allowed herself to smile and giggle quietly-shyly-adorably and talk with him almost every time when he was around (if no one interrupted them).

but now zuko doesn't recognize this girl. always sad, always unimpressed, always locked from everyone. he doesn't understand why she's avoiding him every time as he appears in her sight, why she refuses to meet his gaze when he tries to look her in the eyes, why she's always silent, still, cold and replies only with a nod or barely a few words to everyone who dares to pull her into a conversation.

what happened since he left the fire nation? where is that cute girl he'd known and adored before?

but when they eventually stay alone in the streets of ba sing se, without azula, ty lee or palace servants around, and mai calls him lee in that teasing-flirting manner, pranks him and laughs sincerely and loudly, he finally recognizes her, he finally sees that mai he knew before, and he's relieved that she finally decided to show him this side of herself when she's just smiling and enjoying herself, and sparks him off to fall in love with her again and again.

just imagine every morning fire lady mai helps her husband fire lord zuko to wear all those heavy robes, puts a crown in his hair and then kisses him softly, wishing him a very pleasant day <3

I really convinced Zuko called Mai firelily/FireLady/my lady... and he called Izumi turtleduck.

Any ideia how Mai called them? I can’t believe she didn’t use pet names, but I can’t imagine it either.

I headcanon Mai is very soft with Izumi, so Izumi is her sunshine, and a baby girl, and mama's girl, and a lil sneaky dragon, and Zumi-Zumi, and her whole heart, and definitely not a turtleduck, Zuko, for Agni's sake!! But when Mai is calling her daughter by official titles that means she's really angry. If Izumi hears young lady or Princess Izumi, especially with that warning in mother's voice, she knows she's in trouble straight away.

With Zuko I cannot imagine sweet pet names either.

Do you remember that line "Being prince and all...-"? I headcanon Mai is calling him Fire Lord in a teasing-flirting way. When she gets annoyed by the court ladies (Zuko's unofficial fan-club) she tries to impersonate them, "Oh, Lord Zuko!! Oh, my lord!" and doing this with such a poker face and monotonous voice that Zuko is crying from laughing.

Mai is the only person in the world who can call him Hotman and be met with a smug boyish grin, not anger. Sometimes she gets sassy and calls him Hot Stuff (Zuko's blushing is so precious!)

Mai calls him Lee when she's mad at him. "Whatever, Lee" is the best way to close the conversation in Mai's opinion.

She calls him Fatherlord once Izumi is born.

And honestly, she just has dozens of variations of sighs "Zuko", from irritation to... well, you know ;)

bonus: Zuko absolutely adores when Mai calls him husband, and being Mai's husband is the honorary title <3

worried zuko calls uncle three times a day and begs to stay at home. “no, uncle! you’re an older man and that means the higher risk. i said no! and no more pai sho tournaments with bumi and pakku!”

“i’m bored.” / “i know.” / “i’m hungry.” / “so what?” / “so let’s order a pizza.” / “sure.”

“aren’t you cold?” / “i’ve got a lot in my mind. i wonder what’s changed because of the pandemic. i wonder how the world changed, how i’ve changed.” / “i just asked if you were cold. i didn’t ask for your whole life story.”

okay but imagine izumi, growing up and listening to endless and super weird maiko flirting, thinking that "i don't hate you/i don't hate you too" is the highest and the most sincere form of confession in love.

imagine when the poor girl got a crush, and one day finally maintaining her courage, izumi blurts out "i don't hate you!"

imagine this person's reaction and "err, i don't hate you too, 'zumi. you're, like, my best friend." and then... nothing? nothing at all?!

poor izumi would be ruined.
