[blows a kiss out to sea] for the Mighty Nein pirates arc
#I'm!! I have so many thoughts about why this arc is SO GOOD#But the short version is like#It is an arc about Fjord and identity and power and self and agency as he faces the truth of his patron and faces a rival warlock#But it is ALSO about Fjord grappling with those things bc he is ALSO processing grief and sadness and a search for direction and purpose#and grappling with disappointing disillusionment in how the world and people in your life (including maybe yourself) isn't what you thought#and about coming to resolve he has the agency and strength to not allow these things to deter him from purpose and place in the world.#And—this is why this is a PHENOMENAL arc—so is the rest of the Nein. Individually and as a group.#All of them are grappling with feelings of grief and sadness and disappointment and directionless and helplessness#just the grand malaise and relentless shapelessness of what living often is#They also as individuals and as a group together also find that resolve and strength to carry on and find self and purpose and direction#They all begin to process the very same things in their own lives and in their shared experience as The Nein. Simultaneously and together.#It's an arc about Fjord and self and agency in the face of disappointment and grief and disillusionment.#It's an arc about the Nein—individually and as a whole—and self and agency in the face of disappointment and grief and disillusionment.#It's SUCH a strong arc bc ALL of them are taking the same internal journey—structured around Fjord's very externalized version of it.#And it's got incredible vibes (pirate warlocks of a leviathan!) and some GREAT set pieces. And every NPC in the arc is iconic as is Twiggy.#Anyway. In my feelings about this arc. I said this is the short version and yet.#Critical Role things#CR meta

Happy pride month, everyone! To celebrate, I decided to make a whole bunch of character pride icons!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜Part 2: The Mighty Nein (+ my favourite C2 guest characters)❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Canon identities where applicable, and my personal headcanons/interpretations to fill in the gaps. Click the alt text for the name of each flag, if there's any that you're unfamiliar with. All character art by Ariana Orner. Feel free to use; credit isn't necessary, but I won't say no if you want to give it!

"NO NO NO! *RIPS FLASK OUT OF NOTT'S HANDS*"
"I NEED IT!"
"NO YOU DON'T!"
"I NEED IT!"
*SMACKS HER*
"AHHHHHH"
"YOU DON'T NEED THIS! YOU'RE ALL THE WOMAN YOU NEED TO BE!"
"YOU'RE SO TALL BUT YOUR SLAPS ARE SO INEFFECTUAL. IT'S LIKE YOU HAVE RUBBER WRISTS OR SOMETHING, IT DID ALMOST NOTHING TO ME!"
*BACKHANDS HER*
"NOTHING AT ALL! HOW DO YOU EVEN HOLD THE FALCHION!"
*starts crying*

Just realized Fjord might not be able to say “Eldritch Blast” in the animated adaptation because of copyright, like how they changed a lot of other spell names in TLOVM. Tragic 💔

"nott doesn't care about me, but i care for her." "i care about you, fjord." "tell me again."

hyperspecific sso nostalgia
"you have taken a dangerous fall" or falling off of a cliff so many times that you get taken back to your stable. also the screen turning red when this happened.
magic horses only turning magic if theyre away from civilization.
having to spam W or else your horse will slow down.
waiting for the bus and using the bus ticket.
using the circus ticket.
having to drag and drop items from your inventory.
jojo siwa at the disco.
spirit around jorvik.
collecting the stars and being so excited upon finding one.
certain horses being cold tolerant, [fjord, icelandic, etc] the others slowing down upon entering the valley of the hidden dinosaur.
finding gary goldtooth in the middle of nowhere.
low quality saddle bag pets and that stupid torn saddle bag.
not being able to stack items.
having to build reputation to progress.
the saving nightdust quest.
april fools updates, especially the 2016 supershire.
the summer bonfire event, the birthday event, the st. patricks day event, all of the holiday and seasonal events.
how the areas would be decorated for valentines day, easter, etc.
those things that would temporarily change your starter horses coat into all sorts of wacky things.
the barrel race in moorland.
the old filter.
the trailers being star rider only.
the closets being star rider only.
jumping being star rider only, and justin teaching you how to jump.
no jumping in towns/cities.
the original home stable.
waiting for the fairies and just BARELY missing it.
the baronesses racetrack being under construction for SO LONG.
jorvik not having any snow during christmas.
the 2017 character update and the ORIGINAL original character, plus the original weird looking starter horse.
horse island.
unnamed stable girl, the one that came before maya.
all of the old npcs.
when you enter a new area, the name of it would flash in the middle of your screen.
speed boosts on roads.
star stable news with ylva and matilda.
the loading screen stable cat who gave you tips.
the kallters.
having to build your reputation with the hermit to buy his horses and having to build your reputation with the kallters to buy fjord horses.
the iceberg and the seals.
the clothing and tack being basically unidentifiable until you hovered over them, because the items just had a gray or gold icon with what the item actually classified as. [aka what it looks like on mobile]
the fort pinta shark.
the global store not being around and having to buy things directly from the shops or the mall.
the infamous purple car and bulldozer that would run you over.
having to fill your houses needs multiple times a day plus the little smiley face mood thingy.
only being able to care for your horse near stables.
only having three uses for your water bucket.
unused furniture.
starshine roaming around greendale.
the "glue man" and the little girl in your stable singing during halloween.
wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
the chat filter being called phil.
stacy place oh god stacy place. also archie fails
all of the star stable commercials and ads, especially that one fucking disney channel commercial.
please add your own nostalgias onto this post i would love to hear them

Okay, I'm looking at rarepairs for the fic exchange nominations, and I need y'all to level with me: why does no one write Fjord & Essek (platonically! not even romantically!) when, despite their canon conversation being minimal, every SINGLE instance of it is iconic. They do admittedly exchange very few words, but that's because they do not need any further conversation to absolutely carry a scene.
Have we forgotten the Dungeon of Penance con? "So are you saying you want to date Fjord?" Fjord egging him further into a panic attack in the middle of the arctic? THE RANGER MOMENT? THEIR EXCHANGE AT THE END OF 140???
Fjord and Essek are an absolutely buckwild duo who should absolutely not have the bizarre chemistry that they do and are complete opposites on a lot of surface levels, except for the fact that they are both the type of person (pointedly restrained, skillfully manipulative, ruthlessness simmering under the mask) who Caleb is immediately inclined to distrust but also, unfortunately for him, so incredibly attracted to.

Question for you... do you think Matt was also in cosplay for the M9 reunion show? If so, who was he dressed as?
(Sorry if this has been mentioned before and I missed it.)
He’s dressed as Sweeney Todd. They’re all a mix of character cosplay and iconic British music figures. Sam is Freddie Mercury, Ashley is Bonnie Tyler (with Yasha elements), Liam is Sid Vicious, Marisha is Adam Ant (with Beau’s sashes). I’m not sure about Taliesin or Laura (Laura kinda looks like she’s cosplaying her own pastel goth look from the last (I think?) MN live show, and Taliesin looks more like his sexy Ben Franklin from the VMxMN battle royale than anything else to me), and Travis looks to be straight Fjord.

it is legitimately hilarious and amazing just HOW OFTEN Fjord tried to swindle and cheat and bargain people out of money, especially in the early campaign, and how just as often he bribed people

It is such a Sam Riegel thing to do, keeping his friends and the entire fandom waiting on his new character for so long. I personally think this is iconic. And while we wait, I had a Think about what kind of character I'd like to see introduced:
(Disclaimer that this is based less on what I think Sam would be likely to create, or what I think he specifically would do well; it's entirely based on what I think would be fun, or would add something to the party. If anyone has more thoughts based on Sam as a player specifically, please do add them!)
A reilora, or any Ruidian. I talked about this a bit already, but now the Hells are going to be off Ruidus for a chunk of time, this would be such a great way to bring in new Ruidus lore in a way that would feel personal to the players and characters. It would give both the characters and fandom even more reason to care about the fate of the Ruidians. There could be some exploration of what it could be like for the Ruidians if they do get to come to Exandria. And Matt has definitely had time to brew up the stats for reilora PCs by now.
A character with a positive, healthy relationship with an Exandrian god. Now that FCG is dead, the rest of Bell's Hells are aggressively neutral toward the gods, or negative toward them; the other cleric PC we had, Deanna, loathed her god. Team Issylra encountered some of the worst aspects of Exandrian faith on their vacation from hell. I'm not saying any of those attitudes are bad or unjustified! But this campaign has been an examination of the gods' impact on Exandria, and by the coincidence of what characters everyone has rolled up, we've largely only seen one side of it. Even FCG was very new to their faith and the other characters... didn't always take it all that seriously. It would be fascinating to have a character thrown into the mix at this stage who's more akin to Caduceus or Pike, in that their faith is a positive, integral part of their life. It could be an interesting shake-up to the conversations the Hells have had so far.
A paladin. Just... any paladin. It's the only class that has never been used for a main campaign character's base class, with Vax and Fjord multiclassing into it later in their arcs. I want to see a paladin who's always been a paladin! Paladins are fun! And from a mechanical standpoint, FCG's loss leaves a space open for a general healer/tank/support character, all of which paladins can cover.
An Aeorian who's been freed from their bubble. Look, I love Aeor. I want the Aeor lore. And seeing an Aeorian, someone who has lost everyone and everything they knew at the hands of the gods, but also as a direct result of what happened last time someone tried to kill the gods... would be interesting. (Also make them have known Bolo)
Again, would any of these be Sam's vibe? I have no idea, and I trust that whatever he does will be amazing! But if he rocks up with a reilora paladin, at least I'll know that I have the gift of prophecy.

Level-Up Post: Mighty Nein: Echoes of the Solstice addendum
This is going to be short and sweet (ish) and covering deviations or clarifications to the pre-show post.
Everyone (except Luc) (and Aggy): level 20!
Fjord: I stand by my opinion that Open Sea Paladin 7's Aura of Liberation is superior to Hexblade 14's Master of Hexes, but both are very solid and the important thing is that Aura of Protection from paladin 6. We don't know his invocation but we do know his L13 Warlock Mystic Arcanum, Crown of Stars, or, more accurately to how he flavored it,
Tumblr media
Beau: She DID take the mobile feat, and I'm so happy. 70 ft/round base walking speed. Monks, y'all.
Caleb: has the Wish spell; is using it solely, currently, to replicate lower spells, which is iconic of him. Responsible casting at its finest. One of his at-will 1st level spells is Fortune's Favor, but I don't think we got any of the others, and I believe his feat is also unknown.
Veth: We do not know; truly hilarious of Sam to do this. Don't worry; I'll talk about Luc in a second.
Jester: Her feat is Flash Recall, which is in the TCSR and allows you to replace a prepared spell with another spell of the same level without a long rest. Very good for Jester, whose spell prep is iconic in its eclecticism (complimentary).
Caduceus: much like his careful evasion of any questions from others asking how he was doing during the campaign (also complimentary), his feats - level 19 and level 16 remain a mystery (though we know his INT increased with his level 16 feat). In short:
Tumblr media
Yasha: Took barbarian levels and has the CON and STR to prove it; also took Great Weapon Master, which is a solid option.
Our guests:
Rab "Aggy" Agg: Level 5 monk; no subclass we die like Bertrand Bell.
Luc Brenatto: I don't know how by how much the potion increased his level; at least to level 7 rogue (Evasion) from his base Arcane Trickster Rogue 5/War Mage Wizard 3. For a quick refresh on Arcane Trickster and rogue low levels, Luc has expertise, sneak attack, and uncanny dodge as well as the special arcane trickster mage hand abilities. He has 3 cantrips and 4 spells known from his rogue subclass. Meanwhile, as a wizard he has arcane recovery (not used; a long rest but no short ones), can prepare 6 spells from his spellbook, and he is treated as a 4th level spellcaster (1/3rd his rogue level rounded down plus his wizard level), so he can cast up to 2nd level spells. War mage is, on its own, notably a kind of shitty wizard subclass, but it's actually hilarious and pretty great as a multiclass option here. Luc used Arcane Deflection, which lets him use his reaction to grant either an AC bonus or a saving throw bonus, although when used you cannot cast spells other than cantrips until your next turn. This sucks if you are a wizard, but Luc is a rogue with an Aeorian security cannon, so it's fine. He also gets a +3 (INT mod) to his initiative.
