On the one hand I feel like I should probably read ROTE (and the first book is in my tbr stack) but on the other hand part of me doesn't want to ruin the experience of having no context for what the hell my mutuals are talking about.

Like every time I see a ROTE post I just nod my head and go, "ah yes it's that Pennywise looking twink and his boyfriend Just Some Guy. I wonder what new and exciting levels of No Homo they've reached now? Oh? Soul bonding with your bestie but five feet apart cause you ain't gay? Horrible I wish them only the best."

I’d like to share the current Fool’s Fate fix-it scenario I keep rotating in my mind. Fitzloved | Realm of the Elderlings Mini fic, FF Fix-it

The Fool takes Fitz’s hand, about to kiss it to take away the Skill bond. Fitz thinks he is leaning in to kiss for real, so he also leans forward, compelled by overwhelming emotions, and their lips meet.

Fitz lets it linger, his eyes closed tightly, but when the Fool doesn’t respond he backs off. All is silent save their shaking breaths. The Fool’s eyes are wide and haunted. Fitz wants to slide into the nearest bottomless chasm.

“Oh. I…I have misjudged.”

The Fool searches his face. “Fitz…?” It’s a question as much as it is a plea.

 “Don’t—” Fitz begins, swallows, afraid he is about to resort to begging, and for the moment he does not care. “Don’t go where I can’t follow. You said that once, and I have come to know all too well that I feel the same.” He continues in this way with ill-formed, stumbling confessions that only make everything more unclear. Old aches flare as if in response and he rubs his shoulder, his Skill-touched wrist no longer accessible.  “I should not have done that. I… I felt so many things at once. I thought you… I mean, I wanted it to be so. You have done this to me before, and I—"

“Stop!” The Fool is on the verge of tears.

Fitz wisely closes his mouth. He has never seen the Fool so undone. But when he continues to struggle to find his words, Fitz cannot let this pass by. “I would like to kiss you again. That is what I feel right now.”

The Fool closes his eyes, letting the unshed tears fall. “Why?” His voice is so brittle it compels Fitz to move closer. But then his eyes open again, and they are incandescent. “Tell me! One last friendly peck before I go? Or is it because you want to change my mind, and you know it is a thing I want?”

“It is a thing I want,” Fitz says, and tentatively reaches for the Fool’s face again to brush a tear away with his thumb. “I am not good at this. I’ve said hurtful things to you and made you think that I hold some deep contempt for your nature. I wish I could—” Fitz quiets, because the Fool has leaned his face into his hand and closed his eyes. “Come here.” Fitz moves even closer, and pulls the Fool into his arms.

The Fool seeks out Fitz’s hand, his head resting back upon Fitz’s shoulder. “Oh, Fitz, we have too much unfinished between us, it seems.”

“Does that mean I can kiss you?”

The Fool’s laugh is weak, but the sound is so welcome Fitz’s heart might burst from it.  “Oh, my eager one. I cannot let you win me over that easily.”

“I thought I already had. I was in fact counting on that.”

The Fool lifts his head, and his attempt at a mock lurid smile gave way to something more genuine. “How true that is.”

Fitz presses his lips to the Fool’s temple. “We will talk more, if that is your wish.”

“It is my wish to say here like this and pretend there is nothing else in the world that matters.”

Fitz settles into the embrace and smooths his fingers down the Fools hair. Nothing else needed to be said in this moment.

Don't take this as me trying to push the fitzloved agenda (I am, but not rn), but for conversation's sake it's sooooo funny to me when people try to chalk up the tawny man fitz/fool kiss to "well, they had to kiss, it was the only way!" Like do you honestly think that Mrs Hobb sat down at her table looking over ancient manuscripts of the very real Skill magic and went "Oh no... it's the only way... they have to kiss!!!" bb she wrote the thing

Robin Hobb denying fitzloved isn't real guys it's method writing, she obviously had to practice denying and repressing her characters' intentions herself in order to have write Fitz as so realistically repressed and in denial

and oh my god, you've done it now, I'm going to talk about fitz and the fool from the realm of the elderlings. you can't escape from this. it is as inevitable and inexorable as the changing of the seasons and my begging an extension to file my taxes every year

1. what made me ship it?

the fool's tsundere phase in royal assassin where you can almost feel his feelings for fitz changing as fitz grows more and more infatuated with molly; a very baby queer experience imo, which makes sense because I was about 13 when I was reading these books for the first time and I too was very aloof and sullen and "fine, it's not like I like you anyway" towards the other boys and girls I did, in fact, like anyway. if this seems childish, please see the above sentence where I indicate I was a literal child when I read these books for the first time. like. fitzloved was my first queer ship, but I happened to get into it while I was also reading inuyasha fan translations online (page by page, downloaded through a 56k modem connection in the late 90s/early 00s) so, yeah.

re-reading the books as a 30-something, what made me ship them was their gentle and effortless domesticity at the start-ish of fool's errand, where even fitz calls out how seamlessly the fool adapts to his and nighteyes' way of living on his remote cottage homestead, and how there is no real frustrating period of adjustment as they cohabitate because they instinctively understand each other so well. it's such a marked departure from how fitz's relationship with molly goes, first in their fractious youth (where fitz is a truly terrible lover to molly, who deserves better) and then later on when /zips my lips because spoilers for the last trilogy, and I know I have some followers who are reading the books through for the first time.

anyway tl;dr they're in love your honour, and it is the defence's position that they should fuck about it, I rest my case.

2. what are my favourite things about the ship?

3. is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

ummm I'm not sure. I rather transparently do not like the end of the last trilogy, which I will again avoid discussing because spoilers, but I'm not sure that is an unpopular opinion, exactly. it used to be unpopular in some corners of the fandom, many many moons ago, to assert that the Fool wasn't actually a woman pretending to be a man, because fantasy as a genre that was open and welcoming to queer characters (and writers) is a comparatively new phenomenon, and so for a lot of fans the only way to make fitz/fool work for them was to insist that the fool had been a woman all along. which is very 👎👎👎 imo, not because I'm someone who ascribes to the "the fool is really a man" school of thought either. the fool's gender is a fluid and amorphous thing that is frankly none of my business lmao but regardless, even the pale woman knows that fitz is hot for his bestie regardless of his sex or gender, which is why she tries to woo fitz with her whole "I'm like the fool, but a woman!!" spiel.
