Fisher River Cree Nation wants class-action status for its lawsuit against the federal government, which alleges the $5 annuities paid to Treaty 5 First Nations over the last 148 years violate the agreement because they don't keep up with inflation. The First Nation wants to represent all Treaty 5 nations and their members who opt in to the class action. Stefan Lorne Cochrane, a former chief and band councillor of Fisher River, would be the lead plaintiff, according to the statement of claim filed at the Manitoba Court of King's Bench on Dec. 12. In the suit, Fisher River claims the Crown breached its obligations under Treaty 5 by failing to regularly increase the $5 annuities to maintain their value at the time of the document's 1875 signing.

More climate news that Republicans will tell you to ignore.
This is by Jeff Masters, a professional meteorologist and co-founder of Weather Underground – a pioneering weather site started in 1995.
September 2023 smashed the record for the most extreme month for heat in Earth’s history, recording the highest departure from average of any month in analyses dating back to 1850, said NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information on October 13. NOAA, NASA, Berkeley Earth, and the European Copernicus Climate Change Service all rated September 2023 as the warmest September on record, crushing the previous September record by a huge margin. And famed climate scientist James Hansen warned today that the world is on the verge of exceeding the 1.5 degree Celsius warming threshold seen as key to protecting the world’s people and ecosystems — a claim still hotly contested within climate science. According to NOAA, September global temperatures spiked to a remarkable 1.44 degrees Celsius (2.59°F) above the 20th-century average. The September 2023 global temperature anomaly of 0.46°C (0.83°F) surpassed the previous record-high monthly anomaly from March 2016 by 0.09°C (0.16°F). Using NASA data, September 2023 was 1.7 degrees Celsius above the temperature of the 1880-1899 period, which is commonly called “preindustrial” (the difference between the 1951-1980 baseline reported on the NASA website and the 1880-1899 period is 0.226°C). This is the first time that a monthly temperature has exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial temperature threshold in the NASA database.
Rightwingers make up bizarre excuses to keep us using fossil fuels. It's not unexpected that religion would make an appearance on the climate-denial stage. In the 2010s, hate monger Bryan Fisher told listeners and viewers that it was an insult to God not to use fossil fuels.
youtube
Back to reality...
The year-to-date period of January-September is the warmest on record globally. According to NOAA’s latest Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook and the statistical model it uses, there’s a greater than 99.5% chance of 2023 being the warmest year on record. At the start of this year, few experts foresaw 2023 as being a contender for Earth’s warmest year, as the bulk of El Niño’s warming comes during the second year of each El Niño rather than the first — so it’s possible that 2024 will be even warmer than this year.
There's a climate-denial industrial complex with deep pockets willing to spend big to buy politicians to keep fossil fuel corporations cranking out carbon.
We need to support viable candidates and politicians at every level of government who favor the transition to Earth-friendly energy.

My library just added your book, and I placed a hold for one of the two the e-book copies they have. 5 weeks! The countdown begins…
thank you so much!! requesting library purchases & checking out books if the library gets them in is a GREAT way to support authors <3 I can't believe you have to wait 5 weeks to read, but hopefully that means someone else is currently enjoying her!
on that note - if I may derail your message (sorry) - it's National Library Week here in the States, and the theme for 2023 is "there's more to the story." while libraries DO provide entertainment in the form of various media, they also provide educational programming, resume & job-hunting help & clinics, internet access, and a safe, public space to sit without an expectation of spending money - a kind of space that has virtually disappeared in the modern U.S. but one of which we are sorely in need.
(possibly this kind of space has also vanished elsewhere, but as I'm U.S.-based, I can only speak to the situation here. see also: the fact that I'm stressing the importance of libraries in the first place!)
my library system even provides food, through SAME Café, where meals are provided to the public regardless of ability to pay.
aside from the light this year's theme sheds on the many, many, many things libraries do for us, "there's more to the story" is an important theme to me for so many personal reasons! and I think it's a theme that fits The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher. not only does Edna - an 83-year-old Chosen One - show that there's more to the story; she also learns that there's more to the story. when she sets out to stop an evil sorcerer from destroying dragon-fighters like her long-dead son, she thinks it will be straightforward, if not easy. but as she learns more about the sorcerer, the knights, and her new found family, she realizes destiny isn't as black-and-white as it seems.
anyway, if you want to support libraries during National Library Week (and always!):
visit your library - many libraries are funded based on footfall, so the more visitors, the better!
post a story about what your library means to you on social media using (hashtag) MyLibraryStory (there's a whole promotion going on, and you can win prizes if you post by noon CT on April 28. details here!)
follow your library/system, the American Library Association (ALA), and I Love Libraries on social media
be loud about your support for libraries, especially libraries and librarians fighting book bans!! post about the importance of libraries, push back against book bans, donate if you can, volunteer if you can, vote to renew and increase the levies that fund libraries!! I know we're all disillusioned with voting in the U.S., but voting at the local level is truly SO IMPORTANT and is where your vote makes THE difference. most voters only focus on the big federal elections, but there are local elections in which you can vote directly on policies and funding, so please, please, please vote in those elections, whether or not you vote in federal elections.
and, of course, if you want to support authors (whether me or anyone else), request a purchase through your library system! google "[your library system] + purchase request," and you should find your system's purchase request form if they have one.
for my system, I have to enter the title & author, format, & my library card ID number. there's also a checkbox for me to indicate whether I'd like the book to be put on hold for me if my library gets it in - and I always say yes! even if I won't have time to read the book before returning it - even if it's not really my kind of book, but I want to support the author - I say yes, because my library system will always get the book in if someone's actively waiting to check it out.
(plus I do love seeing my own or a friend's book with the library sticker on it <3)
anyway that was a VERY long post considering you were just like "hi! I'm waiting on your book from my library!" (thank you again!!), but it's National Library Week, so I wanted to talk about that!

Peguis First Nation and surrounding communities in Manitoba's Interlake have declared a state of emergency over lack of funding for their ambulance service, which they say is in danger of shutting down unless the province steps in with support. The Fisher Ambulance Service covers an area of 14,000 people in the Interlake region, including Peguis, Fisher River and Kinonjeoshtegon First Nations, as well as the rural municipality of Fisher. Since the last provincial funding agreement expired in 2019, Peguis has funded the service on its own, supplemented partially through billing, but now the First Nation says it can't keep going. Without a new agreement to pay for ongoing services, and reimburse Peguis for past costs, the ambulance service could shut down completely by the end of the month, said Dr. John Neufeld, medical director for Fisher Ambulance Service. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS EPISODE OF MONDAY NIGHT FRESH
THERE’S TREASURE IN THE BUILDING?
Previously, Elena Fisher (Uncharted) was defeated by Emily Davis (Until Dawn) in a match. Although she wasn’t too salty about the loss, Elena still needed something to distract her. She got her wish when her husband, Nathan Drake (Uncharted), told her that there’s buried treasure somewhere and that the first clue is in the ABW corporate headquarters.
The only problem was that they needed a way to get inside…

The fundamental dishonesty around this dog-whistle election
With Labour seeming certain to form the next government, with one week to go before the General Election, our columnist ANDREW FISHER argues that political engagement after July 4 is going to be even more important If this was a boxing match, the referee would have stepped in by now to stop Rishi Sunak and his supporters suffering more damage. Several Tories have already thrown in the towel. Time…
