I really hoped I wouldn't have to make this post. not yet at least.

my betta Ollie died November 24th 2023. For context of how important he was to me, there was a point in my life I stayed alive for him and him only. Nobody else in my family knows how to take care of bettas like I do, and nobody else ever remembered to feed him, or even care about him like I did. I didnt have many pictures of him, I dont know why I didnt think to get many, but this is what he looked like

a few months later, I got another betta, Atlas. I didnt think I cared for him much, because I didnt give myself enough time to heal before I got him, and it just didnt feel as special as my baby, Ollie. I got Atlas January 17th 2024. I went on a trip for over a week. By this point I know a lot about bettas, and I'd been begging laura for a heater since before I got Ollie, my first betta. she INSISTED heaters were useless. when I came home from the trip, naturally, nobody had been taking care of him. Now, our cat was getting fed by my grandparents, but I dont think they feed Atlas, and if they did definitely not right. Well we come home and the house is cold, my grandparents didnt think to at least try to keep any of our animals warm. So the water is freezing. That night, laura puts a heater on high in front of the tank, and a heating pad on high against one of the side walls. I wake up and my fish was dead. she never even thought to ask me what to do. so there goes my second betta, both have been neglected by laura, who usually buys me the stuff for my bettas, my dad doesn't really care. Atlas died not even 3 months after I got him, on March 24th, the day same day as my baby, Ollie, just a different month. Thankfully I got more pictures and videos this time, and laura has agreed to getting me a heater, after 3 years of me begging

for some reason it won't let me add the other pictures and videos. I'm sorry to anyone who knows how this feels. and to anyone who ever has a pet, get pictures. its never stupid how many you take, or to love your pets. you'll never have enough pictures. I dont think people realize the worth of others until its too late.

I got a build a bear and named it after Ollie, its helped a lot more than I thought it would.

lost another endler today, even after 1 week of PraziPro his condition didn't seem to improve. woke up this morning to him swimming/spinning very weakly at the bottom of the tank, breathing really quickly and hard, resting on the floor periodically. he was very close to death.

i doordashed some clove oil to euthanize him, but it wouldnt arrive for at least 40 minutes so i opted to use brute force instead. it went surprisingly smoothly for my first time doing this, it was quick and instant. i hope i relieved him of suffering.

thankfully, the remaining 5 of my endlers are round and fat and energetic, bright colored and active. im doing another week of Prazi as a preventative as well.

If you look up how to humanely kill a fish they're like "okay get it in a tank and give it clove oil" downside, getting the fish out of the pond, it has to be almost dead anyway or it will just swim away. But sure. Done. In the tank then clove oil. Now what? "Put it in the freezer" WHAT? Um, sir.... this fish is over 3kg. whereabouts in the freezer am I supposed to. Do that? Then if you say oh yeah I can't freeze it, the next suggestions are either highly disputed, or, I shit you not "kill it with a hammer". What the fuck. Enjoy your tank of clove oil, little massive fish. Sorry I couldn't kill you with a hammer. Enjoy fish heaven.

I thought I had more time with you, that I'd be stronger when you eventually passed. I hope you never went hungry, you were never nipped by other fish in the tank, you were never kept lonely or overcrowded. I remember when you laid eggs in the tank. I remember when the house got flooded so I moved the tank into my bedroom. You were often the one I woke up to. I loved you, I miss you, and I'm sorry I let you suffer on your last day here.

Just had a pang of anxiety thinking about what happens to my fish if I die suddenly. I was like... well sorry to say I'd be totally find with most my fish being given back to the store. The fish store I actually shop at not the one down the road. But then I had the thought that my pleco, Prince Turd, would be given to my brother in law and that'd probably be fine but then I thought about him dying at the hands of his flowerhorn cichlid and yeah. I had this deep pain in my gut.
