I find it so funny that Zutaras, for generations, wrote entire think pieces about how Mai is:

1. Too Apolitical and apathetic to be a Firelady

2. Completely selfish and always acting in her own best interest

3. Would only hinder Zuko’s progress as a Firelord

All in attempt to diminish her character and try and prove Katara of all people would be a better Firelady.

Now we have CANON to confirm that Mai is fearless and a staunch advocate for undoing years of fire nation propaganda. And that she’s willing to drop everything to help Zuko in a noble cause - including teaching a new generation of kids the truth about the hundred year war.

I can understand not necessarily being a fan of firelady katara. Not even every zutara shipper likes the idea of it. But literally, what is wrong with ambassador katara?

I feel like ppl only dislike it because it's typically associated with zutara.

It's also funny when someone says that the firelady has no power AND Katara would have to work so hard to make political reform happen and she would SUFFER. Like, which is it? Is she just sitting around being a trophy wife or is she bearing the brunt of the political reforms? You can't have both. I mean, neither is a good argument, but at least pick a number.

Some people say that Katara becoming Firelady would be an empowering role for her, that she could become an activist and a leader. I find this notion to be false. Firstly, even though I haven't read the comicses of A:TLA, from what I've seen from the show, the title of firelady is decorative at best. It literally just means "Fire Lord's wife". Ursa didn't have any political power, and we never heard of any other active fireladies, because they are not relevant at all. They aren't activists or leaders.

But still, Katara being a politically active firelady would require her to be associated with noblemen and councilmen from the FN – the people who were calling the shots during the war, the people responsible for the genocide of the SWT. Additionally, the FN is racist. In The Headbend, we see FN propaganda up close. They've been through 100 years of indoctrination.

In The Painted Lady, the people of the village that Katara helped all turned on her when they found out she's a waterbender, only changing their minds when Sokka yelled at them.

Thus, Katara would be one of the most controversial and hated figures in the FN and maybe even in the entire world. Not to mention potential assassination attempts.

These are negative experiences she doesn't have to go through. So why would she? Why would this be her job? It isn't. Plain and simple. Zuko can and should already be fixing the damages caused to the SWT on his own. While it's true that Katara is the type of person to seek out injustices, and could want to face these horrible people, she can make a change in the community without it taking a toll on her mental health and safety. An indigenous girl suffering to fix the ethnic cleansing and damages of the past isn't empowering. Especially when it's supposed to be a happy ending. Zuko can do all these stuff, but leave it to Katara to take on the mental strain of associating with her oppressors and being public enemy 1#.

Excerpt -

“As Firelady, you will be watched constantly. Inside and outside of the palace. By politicians, by gossips, by them - “ She grabbed Katara by the forearm and dragged her to the window, gesturing down at the square in front of the palace. A group of twenty or so had gathered there, kept out of the palace by a line of five guards. Looking closer, Katara realized the entire group was composed of young women, most about her age, though some who appeared as young as fifteen; even from a distance, anxious energy vibrated off of them in waves as they chatted amongst themselves, glancing at the palace doors every so often, waiting for something. 

“Who are they?” asked Katara. Manami let go of her arm. 

“Your Firelord’s fangirls,” she explained, obvious judgment in her tone. 

Katara blinked at her. “What?”

“They’re in love with him, come gather here every morning hoping to get a glimpse of him.”

A fit of giggles overtook Katara immediately at the thought, and she turned away from Manami, bending over and clutching her stomach as the giggles transformed into a full belly laugh. In her mind’s eye, all she could see was Zuko, sixteen and pouring undrinkable tea and embarrassing himself with his terrible jokes. How was it that boy could have all these girls vying for his affection?
