Alright, internet dudes, lend me your expertise.
I'm sick to death of Gmail. I'm sick to death of Google in general. I've switched to Firefox and DuckDuckGo, and now I want to switch my email platform, so give me your recommendations! Preferably ones that don't track data like I'm assuming Gmail does because why wouldn't it?
#firefox#email#down with google#firefox is king#seriously though I want an email that isn't going to sell my data or whatever#help...please...

Some character info for my Mianite zombie AU:
As a little context for all of these, it's been somewhere between three years and a decade since zombies happened. People are mostly used to the zombies, but they're still a big danger and also people still remember the world before.
Tom is kind of a scavenger. He'll gather anything still usable from abandoned towns, risking contain with zombies, to then trade with towns people have begun setting up again. He has a home within a small town, but also has a couple bases set up around abandoned towns which he tends to use more. Especially since he got bitten, he tends to only go back when he needs to trade, which is starting to worry Tucker about what's going on with him.
Tucker, who lives in the town where Tom has a home, works as a bounty hunter. This is typically just stopping people from causing trouble inside the town, or helping clear out infected when there's too many near the town. But every so often, someone will come to him asking for help with bandits. So he doesn't question too much when someone comes to him asking to track down the woman that's been killing a bunch of "his people".
Capsize used to be a trader, traveling between a couple different towns to help keep them all supplied, until one day her group was attacked by bandits. Basically everyone died, though Capsize managed to keep herself and Redbeard alive and kill the attackers, she lost most of her group and got a massive target put on her back. Since the original attack, she's started intentionally taking down more bandits because, well, they appear to be hunting her down so she might as well thin their numbers. Sure, she's had some close calls and literally should be dead right now (though she's pretty sure the bandits didn't have anything to do with her being bitten), but doesn't really have much of a choice but to continue since the bandits seem quite fixated on taking her down.
Sonja, a researcher from an isolated facility still trying to create a cure for the virus. It's been a while still she's left the facility, being pretty lost in her research, but she's suddenly gotten a lot curious about leaving when she's heard rumors of some potentially immune survivors being tracked. She obviously understands the importance of the research she's doing, but the idea of experiementing on people makes her uncomfortable enough to consider leaving if it ever comes to that.
#mianite zombie apoc au#mianite#i also have ideas for jordan but i can't decide if i should go for the logical idea of him also being a researcher#or the much more fun idea of him being a bandit king#tom syndicate#tucker iijeriichoii#captain capsize#sonja firefox

A New Toy
A/N: Oke so I'm trying my hand at throwing my OCs out there, this is just a snippet from a wider novel, but it's very whumpy so I thought yall might enjoy it, and might just convert this wip to a tumblr whump series since I'll probs never finish it lol. Lmk if yall want more!!
TW: Blood, Kidnapping, Magical murder
The Mask hadn’t minded the shifting power in the city. The King had given him an opportunity to kill them all. But that same King also prevented him from doing it himself. When the King fell, there was a disturbing lack of heroes around. Having no one to battle with, no one to torture, left murdering a very boring hobby. But then that beautiful hero organisation sent out a wave of naïve little heroes to fight, and the Mask had someone to play with again.
This one lay unconscious on the floor, his hands shackled behind his back, his magic bound. The Mask smiled at his helpless form and leaned down to pick him up. The boy reacted in an instant, his head slamming upwards to hit the Mask’s. But he just dodged backwards, letting out a laugh at the futile attempt. It was always better when they had spirit.
The Mask gripped their arm and began to drag him to the next room, where the boy’s “trustee sidekick” sat chained to a chair. The boy got the chair next to it. The Mask expertly unshackled and re-shackled his arms to the chair. The boy glared under his mask.
The Mask smiled his unsightly grin and stood back before clicking the cuff on the boy’s left wrist.
“We’re going to play a little game. I’m going to start torturing your little friend here, and we’re going to see how long it takes you to remove your mask and tell me your real name.”
The boy shook his head. The Mask just kept smiling, before pulling a knife from his pocket. The sidekick was immobile, and gagged. Couldn’t have him interfering. The Mask rolled up his sleeve and placed the knife just to the side of a vein. He turned to look at the boy, before slashing the knife across. Eliciting a muffled howl from the sidekick. Blood began to drip on the floor.
The Mask repeated the process, cutting and watching. The boy flinching every time, and turning his head away. Eventually, when the arm was reduced to a bloody mess, the Mask moved to the other arm.
“Please stop,” the boy whispered.
“What was that?” the Mask asked, cutting again.
“Stop, please stop.” The boy reached up with a trembling hand and lifted his mask, slowly, to reveal his bruised face. The face of a kid.
The Mask cocked his head, dropping his knife. “You’re a kid,” he remarked, letting out a chuckle. “They sent me a kid.”
The Mask wrapped his hand around the throat of the sidekick, channeling a spirit into him.
“No!” the boy cried, straining against his bonds as the sidekick’s skin turned grey and his eyes yellow.
The sidekick stopped moving. The Mask turned to the boy.
“What’s your name, boy?” he asked, picking up the blade.
“Lu-Lucas,” he stuttered.
The Mask smiled, grabbing his flailing wrist and shackling it to the arm of the chair, before digging out his phone and taking a photo.
Final A/N: I accidentally posted this to the wrong account, I didn't even know I had another account (˃̣̣̥ᯅ˂̣̣̥). I'm tryna move over to firefox and its not going well lmao

when you say you're on ao3 for research purposes nobody believes you. But its true sometimes. horror writers probably read like, stephen king, or. sorry i actually dont know many horror writers i only know stephen king i just know cuz im from maine. uh. mary shelley? other horror writers. is what im getting at. and like people who make storyboards for animated movies probably watch a lot of animated movies, mystery writers probably read a lot of mysteries, etc. and then u synthesize that into ur own work and learn from it as well as just reading it for fun. So when i close the fic im drafting in my notes app and open firefox and type in archive of our own dot org and look up "sucking the strap." that's for research purposes. it's important research

Hearts
Spades Clubs Hearts(Here) Diamonds
All these women are hot, some quite literally, and I am very gay for them! Anyway, hearts are all about emotion, love, and passion right? I feel like these ladies are very fitting of those roles! Though, I will admit, I don't have everything figured out about them just yet!
Click Here (to commission) Hot Ladies
April ~ King of Hearts
April's dealt with a lot of her life, but she's actually in a pretty good place nowadays! She works in a bakery/cafe and is a damn fine cook with her fire magic. Yes, despite the cottage core aesthetic, she has an affinity for fire!
April is a fairy who comes from the magic realm! (This is also where dragons reside without a Tether) However, she left and in a hurry, trying to get away from something in her past. When she came to the Material realm, she was homeless for a time. She goes back to the shelter that helped get her out of that situation often, and makes food for them.
April still deals with low self esteem, despite her internal and external beauty. She's got a bit of a crush on Cat, but romance takes a while for her. And she's also got her own demons to face.... But maybe she won't have to face them alone.
FireFox ~ Queen of Hearts
Once again, another character without a name. I'll call her FireFox for now lol. Anyways, she is what April is running from, but I'm not too sure on the rest. She's a villain, just look at her, but I don't know her motives or anything just yet but I have figured out a few things.
Firstly, she's a shape shift and often is mistaken for a kitsune. I don't know if she is one, but she's certainly not human. Secondly, she comes from a small town in the Winter kingdom, one revered for its fire mages. She may be one of the best fire mages around. Thirdly, she has some connection with the Sun Dragon...
Valentine ~ Jack of Hearts
Valentine was a character I made on a whim! She goes to the same college as Cat, and they eventually end up dating. April is... A bit jealous, but eventually is able to get to know Valentine despite all that.
Valentine, meanwhile, is a vampire! Her side plot explores vampirism as a metaphor for diabetes! There are two types (Born and Turned) and companies will often extort this demographic by hiking up the price of stuff they need to live. Not to mention the rhetoric around vampirism, or how sexualized vampires get, of course.
Despite this, Valentine has a cheery attitude and is actually on the cheerleading team at her school. She's going to become a doctor or politician, something that'll change the world, and other Vampire's lot in life!

Word changes...
All of the following is IMO, so YMMV. :->
*****
Anyone noticed how "weaponry" is used nowadays in places where "weapons" would work just fine (and is often more correct)?
Yes, they ARE interchangeable, sort-of, but it's clunky and sounds to me either slightly journo-pompous or like a failure to remember the right word so plugging the most similar one into its place.
ETA: I checked one of my dictionaries, and while "weapons" is more modern, "weaponry" is an obsolete word which has come back into favour. I wonder why...?
*****
"Decimate" turns up all the time, usually when the correct word is "devastate".
Merriam-Webster says: "It's totally fine to use 'decimate' as a synonym for 'devastate'. This is why."
Beg to differ.
As the M-W article points out, "decimate" originally meant a Roman military punishment applied to one man in ten of a guilty unit. (Initially execution, but this had a rotten effect on unit morale, so it was reduced in severity to fatigues, extra drill or restricted rations.)
That's now considered a far too specific meaning and only linguistic pedants dig their heels in. Quite right too, and I speak here as a (bit of a) linguistic pedant...
However, it remains a useful word for more generalised incomplete destruction of living things - saying a regiment, flock, herd or population was "decimated" implies there are some survivors without quibbling over how many tenths. If totally wiped out, however, that's when words like "destroyed" or "obliterated" are more appropriate.
On the other hand something inanimate like a factory, city or region would be "devastated" - and in addition, saying someone is emotionally devastated is understandable, but saying they're emotionally decimated is peculiar.
Two words, several meanings.
It's like cutlery: a spork can replace knife, fork and spoon, but individual utensils give a lot more precision and variation of use.
*****
There are also a couple of real howlers, not just transposed words but actual errors.
One I've heard several times is using "siege" (a noun, or thing) instead of "besiege" (a verb, or action).
For reference, there's a term called noun-verbing, and the practice is quite old: "table the motion / pencil you in / butter him up / he tasks me", but all are either when there isn't already a verb-form of the word, or as a more picturesque way of saying something.
(Interesting side-note about "table the motion": in US English, it means "to postpone discussion" while in UK, CA and I think AU English, it means the complete opposite, "to begin discussion". Why there's this difference, I have no idea, but it's worth remembering as a Brit-fix when writing, also in a real-life business context.)
There IS an existing verb for the action of surrounding a castle and cutting it off from outside help, and that verb isn't "sieged". It's "besieged" or "under siege". Anywhere using "sieged" as a verb is wrong. The Firefox spellchecker in Tumblr Edit Mode is telling me it's wrong right now.
Merriam-Webster, I'm looking at you again.
*****
There's also "coronate" used as a verb. "The King was coronated at Westminster Abbey". Nope. He was CROWNED.
Coronate is an adjective (meaning crown-shaped) and was coined in in the 1600s by a botanist, as a word to describe the shape of certain plants.
The current Royal-associated usage seems to be a bastard back-formation from "coronation", because the act of putting on a crown is the verb "to crown".
This is almost identical in German, French, Italian and Spanish, with noun and verb the same. The only difference is that their verbs have, what a surprise, verb-endings (-en, -er, -re and -ar) on the noun while English does not.
Because English doesn't like to make things that easy...
"Coronated" might be people trying to sound archaic, or those who've bought into the dopey "said-is-dead" school, who perform any linguistic contortion to avoid common words, and who've been taught that repetition in a sentence - "crowned with a crown" - is BAD.
Is "coronated at a coronation" in some way better?
Guess what's got uncritical examples...
If that's M-W scholarship, I'll stick to the OED and my old but utterly reliable New Elizabethan Dictionary, thanks very much.
*****
Language is funny: sometimes funny ha-ha, sometimes funny annoying, but often just funny peculiar, because English etc. etc...

Announcement
Unfortunately, while I was away, it appears my school has pushed an update on my mac(which I do most of my posting on). This update has removed my ability to open .dmgs, and therefore my ability to open Firefox and bypass the internet censors. My dysgraphia makes typing on a phone miserable so, until I find a way to bypass it, expect decreased posting
this goes for @hades-king-of-the-underworld which me and @ccstiles run together
#ooc post#I use the web version on my phone#I’m trying to find a workaround as soon as possible#I’m very sorry

okay hello I keep watching your beautiful AMVs and I'm trying to make one right now and I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to offer tips on where you get your clips from? The video quality is INCREDIBLE but there are certain scenes (especially from The Man Who Would Be King) that I can only find on YouTube very grainily. Love your edits so much, thank you for making them!!!!
AKFNFKSHFKFK HIIIIII 💞 okay so! to get by the black screen on netflix, i go to my browser settings (i use firefox but i used to use chrome and it worked the same way) and search for “hardware acceleration” and make sure it’s disabled. once that’s done, it should screen record no problem!
