tags: @illiana-mystery, @iobsessoverfictionalmen
warnings: swearing, Nica possessed by Chucky
AN: Happy 43rd birthday Fiona Dourif!
"This crap again." Chucky muttered. I looked up in time to see their eyes roll. They shook their head before kneeling down next to me. "How many more boxes?" They asked with a sigh.
"A few." I muttered as I tried to drag the box to the center of the room. It was stuck on the carpet, having been overfilled the year before when all the decorations were put away.
"Give me." Chucky muttered as they grabbed the box. They gave it a few tugs before falling on their ass. “God fucking dammit.” They groaned. I giggled and they whipped their head to look at me, hair flying into their face.
“it’s heavy chucky.” I said, reaching out and brushing the hair off their face. “Maybe we should get more boxes for this stuff.” I scratched my head as chucky sat back up. They grabbed the box again and gave a rough tug. The box moved and I went to grab another one.
“more boxes? And where the fuck are we going to put them?” They asked, standing up and helping me with the next box. “We barely have space for these as it is.” They groaned as we put the box down. Chucky muttered under their breath and I went to grab another box. "Besides, we left it late this year." I paused as I turned to look at them. "It's your birthday." I breathed out. Chucky shifted their weight before nodding slowly.
"I mean technically its Nica's birthday..." Chucky muttered. "So I guess its this body's birthday..." I hurried over and kissed them. Chucky hummed into the kiss, palms sliding into my back pockets.
"I guess I'll have to go find that present I got." I murmured as they tried to pull me in for another kiss.
"You got me one for my actual birthday dollface." They breathed out, tilting their head as they kissed me again.
"Who's to say you can't have two?" I giggled as I finally pulled away. Chucky pouted as I headed to our bedroom to grab the present. I turned around to see them leaning in the doorway.
"I can think of something else I'd much rather unwrap." They said, eyeing the present in my hands before looking at me. I shook my head with a smirk.
"Really Chucky?" I groaned. "That's bad even for you." Chucky laughed before walking over to me.
"Yeah well..." They said before pushing me down on the bed and crawling over me. "It's true isn't it?"

I'm going to be honest, I didn't understand the ending of the last Chucky episode at first because I didn't recognize Brad Dourif. Imagine dying at 38 and having your ghost continue to age. I mean, yeah, Charles Lee Ray is 74 years old chronologically, but biologically, they should have put Fiona in drag again.
Charles Lee Ray haunting the White House as a conventional ghost is certainly a twist, although I haven't really been a huge fan of most of what's happened this season. Where do we go from here? Is Charles' ghost going to get beaten up by the other ghosts in the White House? Is Chucky going to fight historical presidents?

Basically, we saw the Voodoo doll made everyone act starstruck for Jennifer Tilly, even to the point it annoyed Tiffany.
This leads me to believe that the way the spell works is that it manipulates whatever emotions are closest to positive within them for that individual.
For the guards it was the general starpower of Jennifer Tilly that would probably have an impact on anyone.
Now allow me to go through every other character I can think of a reason for this to happen to, how the doll would affect them and who would do it.
Starting with the one who started this. If it was done to Andy, it would obviously be done by Chucky, because it's a power trip.
I imagine it would probably be a further exaggeration of Andy's paternal feelings toward Chucky. He treats Chucky as a friend and father figure and is unbothered by the murders. He's not acting any more childish than Andy normally would, more acting as if Chucky never turned against him in the first place.
Now let's talk about the one we all were and still are afraid would happen. Nica and Tiffany.
Fiona Dourif mentioned that the feeling that Tiffany confused for love from Nica was pity. So, I think Nica under the spell would be more sympathetic toward Tiffany. View her as a victim of Chucky and be trying to help her and justifying her actions through that.
Glenda and Glen could probably have it done to them by either parent.
For Glen it would feed off of their love for their family and their generally passive outside of protecting their loved ones' nature. They would probably change the least, just be less upset by murder.
Glenda's spell would probably feed off of their own darker urges, somewhat reverting them to wanting to impress their father and mother through murder.
Jake and Chucky would be an extension of Good Chucky. With Jake trying to act as an old brother and protector for Chucky. And insisting there's good in him.
Lexy and Chucky would be an extension of Lexy's love for Caroline. She would start viewing Chucky as a protector for Caroline. And work with him as such. Also, I imagine their dynamic would be similar to how Lexy acted when Chucky tried to get her to kill Jake.
Lastly, if Chucky knew how to do this in his first life, he could have used it on Sarah Pierce. And she would probably start treating him as a close friend and loving neighbor, and he would come to the rescue after her husband's death and take care of them.
Anyone got any other ideas.
Sometimes I get this weird thought on what Chucky would do if he could do that weird voodoo mind control Tiffany did on the guards to Andy. What he'd do with that. And how it would result in Andy acting.

Take My Breath Away | Chucky!Nica Pierce x Reader
Ok, I’m assuming that spooky season is already over, but since my obsession with Fiona Dourif and Chucky movies is growing faster this week, I thought it was a good idea to do an imagine with her (please guys write more of herrrrrr I’m in need!)
Idk if I’ll really post this one, to be sure. I have a lot of requests from you guys (promise they’re coming soon, just let me finish school work and then I’ll answer all of them)
And turns out it’s a smut. So... It’s on your choice. I’m not good at writing smuts, especially when it contains a lot of NSFW but I hope this is good. (MINORS PLEASE DNI I DON’T KNOW IF IT’S SAFE!)
Enjoy!
Got any requests? Send me an ask!
(FIONA DOURIF PLEASE MARRY ME I BEGGING YOU)
Prompt: Inside four walls, Nica and Chucky are completely different from each other... But turns out you ended up liking one more than the other.
WARNINGS: Mentions of blood, murder, violence, swearing, dom!chucky!nica, sub!fem!reader (change pronoums if you feel free to do so), soft!dom!nica, sex.
* * *
You didn't mind being held hostage at Tiffany Valentine's house at all. In fact, you weren't afraid of her, not like everyone else was, let alone intimidated by the weird aura of the star who looked too much like Jennifer Tilly.
But your biggest motivation was definitely the woman beside her.
The two of you have felt an immediate connection since you met, ever since Tiffany slapped you handsomely on the head and brought you passed out to her house just for the fun of it.
As the days went by at Tiffany's, you were getting comfortable (as far as possible), and she and the brunette girl were treating you better than you could have imagined. Tiffany would always remind - you knew with little effort - to bring you food in your room and leave you free to move around with the other locked hostages. And their visits were frequent (when you couldn't hear them having sex and had to force yourself to see the scenes).
Also, you ended up discovering some more information about the brunette girl, something that helped you from the start. In Tiffany's carelessness, she ended up waking up from a kind of coma and told you that she was Nica Pierce, and that she had a murder doll possessing her body transiting and dominating being hers for two weeks. When the sane man gave her a good smack on the head, Nica ended up switching bodies with the doll, Chucky, and her domineering personality revealed itself again.
But it all happened in a way you didn't plan for it to happen. You ended up liking kind and suffering Nica more than her Chucky personality. In fact, you realized you were falling in love with Nica, and you were terrified of what it would do to you.
It wouldn't be a good thing, you were sure.
Nica managed, after a while, to have almost complete control over her body and soul, and now she moved less between the two personalities, especially when she was around you. She pretty much only took on Chucky's soul around Tiffany, for the sake of appearances, and you helped her, always with the same bloodstained knife in your hand, when she came into the room looking for something too trivial.
It turned out that you were more involved than you should have been, and of course you let desire and feeling speak louder in those new days. Nica kissed you, Nica took care of you, and Nica fucked you so many times when Tiffany couldn't hear her that it was impossible not to fall in love even more. She was always very careful with you, making sure the Chucky personality didn't come out at the wrong times.
Then, when you were done, when you finally cum and snuggled into her arms, Nica would regain the puppet's soul and keep tricking Tiffany as much as she wanted, always telling you you'd keep the knife close.
It was a dangerous game, but you loved playing with that sort of thing.
* * *
“Oh Nica... please!” you whispered, holding back your urge to explode, but she smiled slightly as she carefully removed her fingers from your pussy and looked at you with those clear eyes and a crooked smile. “I'm coming! I'm coming!”
“Shhhh, love, you're going to wake up Tiff,” she whispered, chuckling in your ear as a tease — once in a while that happened — and you couldn't hold back any longer.
Nica sucked her fingers much more calmly and stood up, snuggling into your bare chest as she touched your cheeks lightly. Your breathing was uneven, but after hugging her, it always got better. The problem was that it was always short-lived when that happened.
"Tiff must be calling me," she said, looking up at the sky. It was morning, the two of you had slept cuddled in bed and didn't even realize that time had passed. You tried to pull her, but she resisted and smiled, coming to kiss you one last time. “I promise I'll be right back, babygirl, don't worry. Keep the knife close, please..."
You nodded, covering your naked body and looking at her, when Nica turned and rolled her eyes. “I always forget! (Y\NN), give me a nice slap on the head, let's go”, she asked, this time in a not-so-gentle voice. “It won't hurt, don't worry. Slap me on the head so I can go back to being Chucky!”
She came closer to you, and bringing your lips closer to her in a kiss, a peck, Nica watched as your closed hand hit her temple with a well-aimed punch. Chucky screamed and fell off the bed, apparently unharmed.
“Holy shit… how I hate all this shit… Hiya, hottie,” he whispered as he got up off the floor, brand new. He still had Nica's face, and that turned you on more than usual. “See ya in a minute!”
Saying that, Nica/Chucky closed the door in front of you and let you breathe, although you no longer remember how to do it.
* * *
It was already dark, you were sincerely waiting for her to come back, but Nica hadn't gone upstairs yet, and you were tired of waiting for that door to open. Alone, you stripped off your clothes and lay down on your bed, thanking heaven Tiffany had been too good to let you live.
Of course, you suspected that there was a hidden interest in that good deed, but at the same time, this was not the time to think about it.
The door opened and Nica walked in, being Chucky, practically half-naked in front of you. You were staggering in your bed and could barely see her properly.
"Look, if you're not the hottest hostage in this room...", he smirked. “I give every reason Nica likes you so much, you know? You're a hottie, I'd fuck with you if it were still me..."
You ran your hands over the bed and found the knife easily, even dizzy. Handing it over to her with a wide smile, you saw Nica change her expression and fall onto the bed, her legs still.
She lifted her head and smiled, being her again, and kissed you more tenderly.
“The thing I hate most in the world is having sex with Tiffany,” she grumbled, as she kissed you with all the desire inside her. “I mean, she's beautiful and she has an amazing body, but I'm not Chucky. I don't really like her, I just pretend I do..."
Nica moved closer to her ear, taking advantage. "She doesn't taste like you do... My favorite taste, definitely not."
And then, you took her lips in a kiss again. It was a needy kiss, mostly because of the delay, but it was getting slow and lukewarm because of your tiredness from having to wait for her. Nica noticed this and opened her mouth several times to apologize, but you never let go.
"We don't need to have sex today if you don't want to...", she smiled, worried about you. "I know you're tired, my love, you can sleep with me until I need to go back downstairs, okay?"
She hugged you and you helped her move her legs up to snuggle you closer this time. However, far from her knowledge, Nica's eyes turned distant and stared at the Good Guy miniature doll on the dressing table. Her smile turned into a cruel, sneering smile. And her eyes sparkled the still eyes of the doll again.
The knife, you needed to find the knife now...
But apparently, with Nica/Chucky holding you, you couldn't find her anywhere. You felt like that was the end of you when you heard his laugh echoing in your ear in the sexiest way possible.
"Ah...sweet good smell of feminine perfume...", she whispered, as he did. Her hair and her body suddenly stood on end. “Guess Nica won't mind if I fuck you now, will she? Neither she, nor Tiff, that daughter of a...”
“That's not your body, Chucky!” you yelled. “Bring Nica back!”
“Where's your knife, babygirl? Hm?” she whispered, still like him, and gave another evil laugh. "Well, then we'll have to go on without her anyway, what a pity..."
Nica's lips, like Chucky, brushed against yours with enormous violence, and suddenly she was no longer the sweet dominatrix she used to lie beside her in bed every day. You didn't know the taste of her lips, you didn't know her kisses, but you were aware that her body would react in a less rational way than this.
Fatigue seized her deeply as Nica/Chucky threw herself on top of you and ruffled your hair, tugging at it with need as she kissed you. Nica/Chucky was ripping all of your clothes off and throwing them on the floor, just like he did with the few he/Nica wore afterwards.
But of course the best - or worst - part was yet to come.
And when he thrust his fingers inside your pussy again, your eyes dilated and glowed to an extreme level. You wanted to scream, you wanted to beg Nica to come back, but at the same time, you were so overwhelmed by that feeling of confusion that you didn't even care anymore.
“Tell me what you want, hottie,” Nica/Chucky whispered in your ear, acting less calmly. “Just fucking tell me.”
“I want…you,” you whispered, still confused and lost.
Nica/Chucky smiled and introduced her fingers again, not before taking the opportunity to kiss you, scratching your exposed back and kissing your neck leaving you with long marks.
“You don't want Nica back, do you?” he whispered, teasing again.
"No...", you confessed, caught off guard. "No, I do not want."
His laugh echoed in your ear and as he lessened the scratching, realizing you were coming, he smiled cruelly and at the same time divine, the eyes that were Nica's practically possessing your body without asking and without even entering it. .
“Fine, now come to me babygirl…be a good girl,” he whispered, and you didn't hesitate. "Let me taste you soon, let's go."
“With pleasure, m-mommy...”
The word simply slipped from your lips, and he laughed once more, letting you come, completely mad. Touching Nica/Chucky's naked body once more, you felt the knife stuck in her panties and pulled up as she hugged you and breathed in your scent.
Nica passed out for a few seconds and looked at you curiously.
“God…” you whispered, hoping she didn't find out.
"What was that? How long have I…”
"Don't worry, love, you've been gone for a few minutes..." You lifted your arm, breathing unevenly, to check your watch. “Almost an hour.”
Nica looked at you again. "Oh no, don't tell me he..."
"I think you should really be more careful when you take your feelings to your soul, Nica...", you smiled teasingly. "It was kind of weird, despite your voice and sexy face you have, having sex with him... like... fuck, he's a beast."
She widened her eyes. "Oh no. Don't tell me you liked it?"
You didn't know what to tell her, so you shrugged.
“Please, anything but this, fuck…” she whispered. “I can't bear to lose my girl to this doll trapped inside me. I fucking can’t bear."
“Am I your girl?”, you whispered too, in her ear.
And Nica kissed you, a remnant of Chucky's laugh escaping her lips right in your ear. “You will always be my girl, babygirl… Always. Even though I'm possessed by a perverted doll..."
You guys laughed together, ready for a second round. Only this time without the adrenaline rush of angry fingers and Chucky's laughter inside you. Unless of course, when it ended up turning into a kink between you.
Within four walls, maybe that would be worth it, if that would take your breath away.

The fact that during the behind the scenes segment, everyone was incredibly unnerved by Fiona Dourif’s screams during THAT scene, I found kinda ironic since I saw an old Brad Dourif Q&A on YouTube, and he told a story involving her about when he was working on the first Child’s Play movie.
He was doing ADR for the scene when Chucky is set on fire by Andy. Fiona, who was about 6 at the time, had come into the room where he was recording, unbeknownst to him.
And after hearing her father scream for over a minute like he was being murdered… the poor little girl burst into tears and ran out of the room. Brad had to go after her and reassure her that he was fine.
“…And consequently, she became an actress.”
I can only imagine how he must’ve felt now hearing his daughter scream like she was being tortured while filming that. 🥺

I'd love to meet Jennifer Tilly, of course! But also Brad Dourif, Fiona Dourif, Don Mancini, and Robert Englund.
Girl! SAME! Imagine meeting both Brad and Jennifer and taking a shitton of pics with both?! I would purchase the dolls for them to sign and never have anyone touch them for that lol! I esp imagine Jennifer to be such a sweetie pie and smell bomb like the queen she is when she gives hugs lol! Love her to death! ✨

18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
YOU WILL BE BLOCKED
warnings: possession, Chucky
AN: I said I'd do it. Finally thought up a good story for Nica. Well possessed Nica. Because in a way it's still Chucky and that's what I'm comfortable starting with. Feedback would be nice on this one. Thx.
The rain beat against the window pane as we lay in bed. Their head laid on my chest. It was still hard to figure out where Chucky ended and Nica began. The breaks were coming more often than before. Chucky tried to play it off like he knew what was going on but those flashes of Nica scared me. Moments like this were difficult for me. It seemed like they were both present, barely keeping the other down.
"So who are you right now?" I asked, fingers running through their hair. Blue eyes shot up to mine and I knew in that instant it was Chucky.
"Who the fuck do you think it is?" My hand fell from his hair and I huffed out a sorry. As Chucky settled again, I felt him stiffen up. "I get it." He finally gruffed out.
"Get what?" Rolling over, Chucky pulled me to his chest and took up the action that I had stopped.
"Why you ask that every morning." Settling against his chest, I held tight to his waist. "I can feel her fighting her way out. Flashes of memories that aren't mine mix with memories that are. It's difficult to tell how long this will last. Something tells me this was never actually meant to be used on a living person." I closed my eyes.
"Don't Charles. Just don't. I've told you I don't want to know the alternative." He hummed above me and gently tugged as his fingers got caught in my hair. "So what are you going to do? Go back in the doll?" I waved a hand at the closet where he had thrown the last Good Guy doll he had been in as soon as he had entered my apartment.
"If it comes to that." There was a beat of silence. "Would you leave if I did that again?" I shook my head and rested my chin on his chest.
"No. I'm not Tiffany." He smirked down at me before pressing a kiss to my forehead. There was another beat of silence. "So then back to Hackensack or somewhere else?" Rain continued to hit the window, drawing Chucky's attention for a bit.
"Back home." He muttered. I sat up next to him.
"Hackensack then." He shook his head but didn't turn his attention away from me. "Chicago?"
"Yeah. Andy's gonna keep following me. It's best to get away from here. Those dolls will do what they do best and I can live a regular life again." He finally met my eyes. "Being in a doll for the last 34 years put a few things in perspective."
"I'm sure being in that body has put a few things in perspective as well." Chucky grimaced before running a hand down his front.
"Yeah." Getting out of bed, Chucky started to dress. It wasn't anything new to see him don a suit in this body but it did make me miss his old one. "If we go back to Chicago, I can ransack Tiff's old trailer. Maybe find the Heart again." His eyes met mine briefly before pulling on his pants. "Finally come back the way you deserve." I moved to the edge of the bed where Chucky was pulling on his socks. Wrapping my arms around him from behind, I leaned my head against his shoulder.
"What makes you think I don't deserve you this way?" I pressed a kiss to his cheek. "What makes you think I don't like you this way?" Another kiss was pressed to his temple. "Chucky, I'll take you however you are. I think I've proven that time and time again. No matter where you are, you are still you and I still love you." Chucky sighed and turned his head towards me.
"You mean that dollface?" I kissed him.
"Of course I do dickhead." He caught my chin and held me steady, about to kiss me again. "Deep down, you'll always be Charles Lee Ray."

I’m going to take the opening moments of this post to talk about one of my favorite movies, and mourn the loss of my favorite TV channel at the same time. While this piece will be about The Banana Splits (I promise), I want to mention Fear Clinic. This 2014 film, based off of the FEARnet web series of the same name and starring Robert Englund, Fiona Dourif, and Thomas Dekker (if that name isn’t familiar to you, he was in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake — he’s also a musician, and has come out as gay. I highly recommend checking him out! His is my favorite performance in Fear Clinic, and though I haven’t listened in a while I remember enjoying his music). Though tangentially, Fear Clinic IS related to The Banana Splits, and not just by being TV movies. FEARnet, the company behind the original shorts, was merged with Chiller in the same year as Fear Clinic was released. Only three short years later, in 2017, Chiller would fold — the channel on which I spent many high school hours watching unknown, schlocky, forgotten horror movies is no more (sequels of sequels, made-for-TV disappointments, and more). Its parent, however, still lives: SyFy.
I’ve bemoaned SyFy channel movies before, and will continue to do so; I maintain a deep grudge against the handling of those two Pumpkinhead sequels. There are times, however, when a gem slips out amidst all the schlock. Even Blumhouse is responsible for a movie I enjoy (a singular movie — I’m not joking, one movie; if you’re curious about which it is, it’s The Purge: Anarchy). SyFy’s gem, in this instance, is The Banana Splits movie. Released in 2019 and almost certainly the prime example of “this movie did not need to be made,” I was mostly interested in the movie as a joke. I’d previously heard my father talk about watching the original show as a child, and my interest in the film was piqued. After all, won’t we eventually reach the day where what I watched as a child is remade into some twisted horror movie? The Wiggles are perhaps most suited to this— remember those puppets?
But I digress; potential Wiggles puppet horror movies aside, there’s something laughable about our need to twist and corrupt the innocent. Twisted fairy tales, those rhymes about killing Barney we all seemed to know as a kid, creepypastas about cursed episodes of kids’ shows. It seems almost unavoidable, this warping of the nostalgic. If this is so, then The Banana Splits were an unfortunate, if not undeniably suited, victim of cultural circumstance; the Krofft brothers seemed to have a talent for the vaguely unnerving (H.R. Pufnstuf or Lidsville would be equally suited to this sort of treatment). What could’ve easily turned into a mess of confused aesthetics and cheap internet-style horror, however, turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
The plot’s simplistic enough — a boy and his family go to see a live recording of the Banana Splits show, though the costumed characters are robots rather than actors. They are instructed that the show must go on, and begin their rampage after the show is cancelled. Nobody will be winning any screenwriting awards, but that doesn’t really matter. There doesn’t need to be anything more than that, and I’m glad they didn’t take themselves too seriously. The film has a lot of what I imagine the show had as well: goofy charm.
It seems like they had a lot of fun with this movie, coming up with multiple inventive and brutal kills (and using practical effects!); it’s all really nasty, and makes for an absolute blast to watch! From oversized lollipops rammed down people’s throats to someone being forced to saw their own fiancé in half during a sick magic act to a cartoonish hammer being used to bludgeon someone. It’s gross, it’s over-the-top, and it works! If you wan’t something stupidly fun to watch, that’s a little ridiculous but still has a strong heart and really cool effects, track down the Banana Splits movie and give it a shot. It probably won’t knock your socks off in the same way as the genre classics do, but hey, you are guaranteed to get that damn theme song stuck in your head! And though you’ll probably be cursing me for this recommendation the next day when you can’t stop hearing that obnoxiously upbeat music, I can guarantee that the gore and the atmosphere of this film are 100% worth the torment.

Every time I try to imagine someone other than Brad Dourif voicing Chucky, it gives me a stomach ache. I love Mark Hamill, so maybe that’ll help me eventually get over it, but I’m still feeling like I just don’t want this and didn’t ask for it. I’ve struggled with the remake from the beginning, and I thought the reveal of the voice actor, especially with it being someone as cool as they chose, would decide me in its favor. Everyone else seems on board now, shrieking with joy, and I’m still just wishing it was Brad Dourif. And Don Mancini. With Jennifer Tilly there. And Fiona Dourif. And fuck it, man. Just no.

Over five episodes the teams must battle it out, as their creations are judged by renowned cake decorator Shinmin Lee and horror film director and makeup effects master Todd Tucker (The Terror of Hallow’s Eve), along with a rotating panel of celebrity guest judges, including Fiona Dourif (star of Curse of Chucky and this year’s Cult of Chucky), Bryan Fuller (executive producer of Hannibal and American Gods), Juliet Landau (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Terror of Hallow’s Eve), Robert Patrick (Hellions, Terminator 2), and Shane West (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).
One team will be eliminated each episode, with the last team standing walking away with the $50,000 grand prize.
Halloween chills and thrills continue as new series Halloween Wars: Hayride of Horror takes the competition out of the kitchen and into the pumpkin patch.
When night begins to fall and the pumpkin patch closes for the day, two teams of master food artists – working in cake, sugar, and a whole lot of carved pumpkin – face off to create terrifying Halloween displays through three episodes, with one team taking home $15,000 each episode. But to win the cash prize, the winning team’s displays of horror must win the votes (and screams) of a wagon full of hayriders and judges Zac Young and Bianca Appice.

Why you should watch Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, an essay by a bored English Lit Student
Google Docs link here
full essay under the keep reading line (warning, very long, just over 1000 words)
-Sophs (DirkGentlyThings)
“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” is a wonder to modern media, both in the genre of American Crime Fiction and Science Fiction. This (currently) one-series long television drama is an adaption of the “Dirk Gently” series (trilogy) written by Douglas Adams, who also wrote the “Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy;” a “Trilogy in five parts.” Dirk Gently himself is played by the wonderfully talented Samuel Barnett and Todd Brotzman is played by the fantastic Elijah Wood, famous for playing “Frodo Baggins” when he was 18, in the fantasy trilogy “The Lord of the Rings,” written by JRR Tolkein. The “Dirk Gently” trilogy was originally adapted for television by ITV studios in 2011. However, only three episodes were made, determining its place as a bit of a flop. Some viewers, such as I, for example, quite enjoyed it though. “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency" first aired on BBC America in October. This proved to be a huge success, however slow to gain followers initially, but following it's success, it was made available on Netflix.
The first character to be introduced in a Sherlock-esque fashion, initially centred by the (dare I say it) sidekick and shows the process in which the original life of the sidekick is transformed by meeting the protagonist, is Todd Brotzman. Todd is an hotel bellhop, living on his own in a rather dishevelled apartment. He is in his early 30s and looks perpetually miserable. He had previously played in a band called "Mexican Funeral," but that had fallen apart once he dropped out of college, however he is evidently attached to this band and his guitar, as he still owns numerous band t-shirts. He doesn't appear to have any friends and is in a constant war with his crazed landlord, Dorian. Todd Brotzman has woeful luck.
Next is Dirk Gently. Dirk Gently is arguably the complete antithesis. He is first seen climbing through the window of Todd's apartment, the evening after Todd accidentally stumbles across a murder scene and gets fired. Dirk arrives with a very Dirk-esque "hi!" Todd proceeds to throw Dirk out of his flat and slam the door. Slowly, Todd warms to Dirk and assists him in working out how the murder occured in very, lets say, unconventional means. Todd is very much the "Watson" to Dirk's "Sherlock," despite the fact that Todd has at one stage shouted "I'm not your Watson, Asshole!" This is a lie. Dirk claims to be a "Holistic Detective." This means that he believes that the universe will bring him any and all information needed for a case. It has been suspected that Dirk is in fact psychic, however this is to date, undisclosed. Dirk was taken by the CIA at a young age, working under "Project Blackwing" under the code name "Project Icarus." Now. this organisation wishes him to return, sometimes using forceful means to procure this. This eventually leads to great trouble.
Our two powerful female characters are called Amanda Brotzman and Farah Black. Farah has been hinted to be an ex-FBI worker, now investigating the murder of her close friend and current employer, Patrick Spring. She is also searching for his daughter, Lydia Spring. Farah is the personification of a strong, independent woman. She is well-respected by the other characters and does not conform to the trope of "needing a man to save her." This is quite the opposite, as she has saved Dirk and Todd from death multiple times. Amanda is Todd's younger sister, she is aged around late 20's and has a rare genetic illness called "Pararibulitus." This means that she sees and feels hallucinations that feel terrifyingly real, for example, that her hands are aflame, or that she is drowning on dry land. Todd and Amanda's parents have have lost all of their money, so Todd pays for Amanda's medical fees by any means possible.
We also have a group named "Project Incubus," or the "Rowdy 3." However, there are four of them, which later becomes five, possibly as a reference the Douglas Adam's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," which has been referred to as a "Trilogy in Five Parts." These 4 members are named Martin (Michael Eklund), Gripps (Viv Leacock), Cross (Zak Santiago) and Vogle (Osric Chau, who also played Kevin Tran in the hit CW television show, "Supernatural"). Project Incubus has been described as "Psychic Vampires," meaning they feed off of people's emotions. They drive around in a large, dirty van, with the words "The Rowdy 3" spray-painted across the sides.
Our final (so-far) known member of Project Blackwing is "Project Marzanna," (Fiona Dourif) who now goes by Bart Curlish. She is a small late 20's woman, with filthy, unkempt hair and a very shabby appearance. She directly mirrors our main character, however she calls herself a "Holistic Assassin." She likes guns, killing people and apparently long runs on the beach. She allegedly cannot be hurt or killed, except if she, to quote Max Landis, writer for the show, "misread a premonition, acted against her instincts and when acting against the flow of the universe [she is] as vulnerable as you or I." Bart "befriends" an IT worker named Ken (Mpho Koaho). I use the word "befriends" very loosely, as I in fact mean "kidnaps." She then travels around with him in the car and they bond over a "Backstreet Boyz" song, as she learns about how radios and song lyrics work. Ken then chooses to stay with Bart, eventually adopting a corgi together in a very "Imagine your OTP" style manner.
In conclusion, "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is a prime example of many important themes and genres in modern media, such as Crime Drama, Sci-fi, friendship and challenging gender-roles, with one of the many examples of this being when Amanda befriends the Rowdy 3 and Gripps happily allows her to paint his nails, despite the fact that he is a large, quite frankly terrifying looking man. This show also portrays healthy, platonic friendships between two opposite genders and how women can be powerful and independent without being sexualised or demeaned by men. "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is delightfully refreshing and that is why it is well worthy of being watched.
