After Breakfast (Päättynyt aamiainen / Avslutad frukost), 1890, by Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861–1919)
Apparently this painting is the first depiction of a woman with a hangover in Finnish art, at least by a female artist. It was condemned and mocked by the contemporaries; even Danielson-Gambogi herself later seems to have regretted presenting it publicly, calling it "that idiotic breakfast thing". *
Obviously I disagree with her: I've always loved this painting and its atmosphere :)
* Leponiemi, S. (2021). Niin kauan kuin tunnen eläväni: Taidemaalari Elin Danielson-Gambogi. Gummerus.

Cloves, 1891 Marga Toppelius-Kiseleff (nee Marga Lucie Wilhelmina Rosa Kiseleff) (1862–1924, Finnish)
Marga attended a German girls' school in Helsinki and began her artistic education at the School of Drawing of the Finnish Art Association in 1880. She furthered her studies in Switzerland under the tutelage of Rosalie Gay, a renowned flower painter. During her time abroad, Kiseleff also spent periods in Paris, studying under Émile Rousseau in 1887. Kiseleff's artistic focus revolved almost exclusively around floral subjects, particularly watercolor representations of natural flowers, fruit tree branches in bloom, and various fruit arrangements. She primarily worked in her studio rather than en plein air. Kiseleff's watercolor and gouache works were first exhibited at the annual exhibition of the Art Association in 1882.

Siiri was a headstrong capable lady when she was younger. She's even more strong and cunning in her 50's though. :> Drawing a scene where she really gets to shine, bit impatient to start updating to show it BUT I gotta be a good boy and complete the buffer first.

Finnish Tango
Since we have opened the can of Finnish tango - a genuine music genre of its own - with Control's Sankarin Tango song, here are some other tango songs from Finland. Some of these are original and some are covers. I have marked which are definitely original Finnish songs but I might have missed some.
More information about Finnish tango under read more.

Reijo Taipale - Tähdet meren yllä (Stars Above an Ocean) [original Finnish tango]

Tamara Lund - Lapin tango (Tango Lapland) [original Finnish tango]
Tarja Lunnas - Sinun kanssasi tähtisilmä (Together With You, The One With Sparkling Eyes) [original Finnish tango]
Typical to a Finnish tango is that it's mostly talking about yearning and misery of life. Quite often the most positive tango songs are covers translated in Finnish. R sounds is typically rolled extra hard and words are stretched to add more drama. Many male singers have a vibrating voice which adds the drama. The strong R is especially present in how men sing. Women typically sing tango with a brighter voice and tone even when a song is dark.
Finland has a tango singing competition called Tangomarkkinat. It's currently struggling, partly because the after effects of covid and younger generation preferring other genres over tango but it's still hold annually. It was aired on TV each year for decades. Tangomarkkinat crowns a Tango King and a Tango Queen. Some of the winners are still extremely well known and popular artists decades later like Arja Koriseva (Tango Queen 1989), Mika Pohjonen (Tango King 1992) and Marita Taavitsainen (Tango Queen 1995).
If you search Finnish tango by a composer you should go after Unto Mononen. He has composed the majority of Finnish tango sngs.
Many of the above songs are sung by different artists so if you search by the song name you will find new singers to listen to.
The search word for Finnish tango in Finnish is suomalainen tango.

Albert Edelfelt (Finnish, 1854 - 1905) • Self-Portrait in 17th Century Costume • 1889
Why did the 19th century artist Albert Edelfelt choose to paint his self-portrait wearing 17th century attire? Having read a bit about him, I've concluded that it was a type of artistic rebellion against having to paint women in order to make a proper living. He both loved and hated his female subjects and much preferred the valiant, heroic qualities of brave men; qualities he felt he lacked.
Here is a portrait of model Virginie, with whom Edelfelt was rumored to have had an affair.
" The worst thing is that I am so fed up with these so-called Parisian subjects, these little women (petites femmes), that I can no longer bear to see without thinking of all the wretched painting, superficial and cute, that one has to do with them. The models look all the same to me; I can achieve neither veracity or character when I paint them; their poses, always the same, annoy me, and that false prettyish elegance drives me insane. " – Albert Edelfelt
