thinking about the lore i have for my dan n stat where like. he went on tour with the group for a year. wrote a whole book about it. SATAN'S NIGHT OUT: ON THE ROAD WITH THE VAMPIRE L3STAT.

It's a great retrospective on the band, their origins, the alleged kayfabe, has a lot of great photos daniel himself took of the members on the bus or at venues or motels. lots of archival stuff, too. really deep interviews.

but the thing is, dan will never let stat win. he's beautiful and charming and dan is going to make him pay for that. more importantly, he's not about to go with stat's batshit insane plan to reveal 'we're here! we're queer! we're vampires actually!' to the mortals. so the book also gets to the core of the vocalist's backstory.

...so in-universe there may be a contingent of people who believe that one of rock's most successful frontmen is a music prodigy from quebec born herb finkle.

As usual the press, as much as the pressees, was at fault for the draggy set — to with the quartet — half of whom tried valiantly to make something of inane questions and half of whom merely winced in disdain. This is HEAVILY inspired by @softpine‘s beautiful journals. I love the way she creates them, so I decided to give it my own shot. It was so fun to do!

since my post about me being worried for harper is getting some attention again, I'll use this opportunity to say that I FINALLY saw the episode with Harper's parents

and oh my god i had every right to be worried

for those like me who didn't know there was an episode with Harper's parents until they decided to watch the full show instead of following disney channel random decisions as to which episodes will be aired again (I swear, i saw some episodes so many times that i thought for a while i had seen the whole show already (I'm on s3 and so far only two episodes were totally unknown to me (shakira and harper's parents), so i was actually almost right)), here's what happens:

the episode is set after Harper moved in with the russos so she could stay instead of following her parents somewhere else

the russos are talking about their annual tradition of taking a family pic at the beach, and alex, as a teenager, thinks it's stupid, while harper is thrilled to be included like a true russo (honestly, the fact she wants so bad to be a russo is already sending big red flags, now that i think about it)

cue to Harper's parents arriving,

basically, they have an auditon for their show, that will make them do it in a train in ronania, and they ask harper to help them. Harper refuses, because she largely prefers staying with the russos and do the family photo. Meanwhile, alex is absolutely thrilled with Harper's parents, and she offers to do harper's part

when alex arrives at the repetition, she realizes that things are not as fun as she expected, and that it's serious business and intense training that expects her. of course, alex being alex, she's not happy with it. things happen, and the finkles tell her to leave, and alex complies

but then THIS happens:

"Harper's father: Looks like we've gotta replace her. [to alex] Hey buddy, how about telling Harper to hightail it over here.

Alex: [walking back into frame, confused] Harper? She's kind of happy not doing this.

Harper's mother: Harper doesn't care about being happy. Harper cares about making other people happy. She's a Finkle!"

that's awful. Harper's parents not only acknowledge the fact they know harper doesn't want to do this but they don't care, they also acknowledge that they're full aware she's too nice and will accept anyway if they imply/say it would make them happy to receive her help.

Harper's parents are ready to manipulate her for their own benefits.

To help you understand how wrong this is, alex herself immediately accepts to keep helping them. Alex accepts to do something she obviously dislikes, because if she isn't the one doing it, Harper will do it.

Alex, the character who will throw under the bus someone so she can get out of something she doesn't like, until she's called out and feel bad, leading her then to decide to fix things, just immediately decided to keep on doing something she dislikes, because if she left, someone else would have to do it

at the end of the day, alex makes the plan to ruin the audition, so nobody will have to leave with the Finkles

remember how i said that alex loved the finkles at the start of the episode? now she wants to ruin their big thing. in nine hours, she changed her whole opinion on them

of course, at the end, the russos succeed at ruining the audition, and nobody has to leave, neither be forced doing something they don't want to

also, to add on how awful Harper's parents are by using the meta:

most of the time in wowp, the use of magic backfires, especially when it was used selfishly

here's, there's only one spell being used, and it's the key to the episode's resolution.

during the whole episode, justin wanted to prove to the finkles he could be funny and interesting too, so he decides to use a spell to make himself naturally funny. things happen, and every russos are touched by the spell, making a show so funny that they steal the Finkles' thunder, leading to the happy ending

not only was a spell the way to have the good end, but a spell used for selfish reasons was the way to have the good end

and no, nobody got any punishment

the need to ruin the show was so important that it outweighed the usual moral of "use magic wisely and selflessly"

of course, at the end, because it's disney and these characters can't be full bad, they have a scene that felt almost ooc, where Harper's parents apologize for wanting to force harper, and realize that the russos and zeke aren't as bad for her as they thought, and they leave to try to make a new show

which would have worked (the whole jig of "parents that cares about their kid but are a bit misguided" has worked on me before), if it wasn't for the fact that, once again, harper's parents admitted they were ready to manipulate her to get what they want (also, let's not forget all the worrying things harper says about her family sometimes)

plus, like, the russos just ruined the finkles big opportunity, the one they were ready to go far for it to succeed, and they're not upset?? like, at all??? no way.

Basically, this episode jus proved us that Harper's parents are trash, and that the Russos should totally adopt her

The picture I chose for this assignment is one my mother took in the 90s. While doing the reading, the image, Saturday Afternoon, Brooklyn, New York 1988, caught my eye and reminded me of this image. In both form and contrast, these images display striking parallels, but also contrast. The two figures appear mid stride, almost interrupted in their own lives. In, contrast, the woman is clad in all white in a stark contrast to the dark background, while this figure is in all black, against a very light snowy background. Both of these figures are mysteries shrouded in the moment of the shutter’s click. They are both a figure, but objectified for the viewers experience.

The Excerpt from the reading that brought me to this comparison was, “This African American woman is stopped in time. She is an archetype; Evangelist, missionary, nurse, or usher. It is ambiguous just how willing she is to be photographed... her multidimensional character becomes apparent the moment the shutter is closed” (Willis page 10).

Assignment #3 Brainstorm/Initial Research

When being assigned this project, I started going through the artists that were listed as references in the assignment. I was drawn to the works of Man Ray, Martha Rosler, Jeff Wall and John Stezaker. Being inspired by their work, breaking down the assignment promt, and looking at one of David Hockney’s collages (posted below) my mind immediately went to the classic “serial killer wall” (also known as a “crazy wall”). It is an efficient way to map out one’s thoughts, which is a great way to “tell the story” of one’s mental state.

The initial studies that I did was into a WatchMojo Video: “Top 10 Crazy Obsession Walls in Movies and TV.” I put the list below of the movies/tv show episodes covered in the video, and I crossed out the ones I did not do further research into.
