Summaries under the cut
The Forbidden Library by Django Wexler
Alice always thought fairy tales had happy endings. That--along with everything else--changed the day she met her first fairy
When Alice's father goes down in a shipwreck, she is sent to live with her uncle Geryon--an uncle she's never heard of and knows nothing about. He lives in an enormous manor with a massive library that is off-limits to Alice. But then she meets a talking cat. And even for a rule-follower, when a talking cat sneaks you into a forbidden library and introduces you to an arrogant boy who dares you to open a book, it's hard to resist. Especially if you're a reader to begin with. Soon Alice finds herself INSIDE the book, and the only way out is to defeat the creature imprisoned within.
It seems her uncle is more than he says he is. But then so is Alice.

Cadmium (Caddy), is the eldest; then Saffron (Saffy); Indigo, the only boy; and Rose, the youngest. When Saffy discovers quite by accident that she has been adopted, she is deeply upset, though the others assure her that it makes no difference at all. Saffy is the daughter of Eve's twin sister, who lived in Siena, Italy, and died in a car crash. Grandad brought Saffy, as a very small child, back from Siena.
At Grandad's death he leaves something to each of the children. To Saffy, it is "her angel," although no one knows its identity. How Saffy discovers what her angel is, with the help of an energetic new friend, lies at the heart of this enchanting story.
Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth by E. L. Konigsburg
A lonely girl discovers a magical world and a new friend when she meets a young witch on Halloween.
Unicorns of Balinor by Mary Stanton

What Ari doesn't know is that she is not from our world, but from Balinor, a land of sorcerers and unicorns! Her parents, the King and Queen, sent her to Earth to protect her from a raging war before they were banished from their homeland. Now Ari--Princess Arianna--has found the road back to Balinor. As she struggles to remember her heritage, she must face the challenge of restoring peace to Balinor.
The Divide by Elizabeth Kay
When Felix and his parents visit the Divide in Costa Rica, a place where the waters that run down to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans separate, he faints and wakes to discover an amazing back-to-front world where mythical creatures are real and humans and science are legend.
Phantom Stallion by Terri Farley
When 13-year-old Samantha returns home to her family′s cattle ranch in Nevada, she′s worried. She moved away two years ago to recover from a bad fall off her beloved mustang, Blackie, and she′s still not sure she can get back in the saddle. Her new colt doesn′t seem to like her, and the other ranchers treat her like the boss′s spoiled daughter, and Blackie has been missing since that fateful day. But that′s just the beginning. When Sam suddenly finds the fate of a mysterious mustang who may or may not be the missing Blackie - resting in her hands, she has to learn to be a real cowgirl, ready or not.
Miri and Molly by Annie Barrows
Miri is the only single child in the middle of a family with two sets of twins--older brothers and younger sisters. When the family moves to an old farmhouse Miri accidentally travels back in time to 1935 only to discover Molly, a girl in need of a real family to call her own.
Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone
Almost everybody who has grown up in Chicago knows about the Thorne Rooms. Housed in the Children’s Galleries of the Chicago Art Institute, they are a collection of 68 exquisitely crafted miniature rooms made in the 1930s by Mrs. James Ward Thorne. Each of the 68 rooms is designed in the style of a different historic period, and every detail is perfect, from the knobs on the doors to the candles in the candlesticks. Some might even say, the rooms are magic.
Imagine—what if you discovered a key that allowed you to shrink so that you were small enough to sneak inside and explore the rooms’ secrets? What if you discovered that others had done so before you? And that someone had left something important behind?
Hitler's Daughter by Jackie French
Her name was Heidi, and she was Hitler's daughter.
It began on a rainy morning in Australia, as part of a game played by Mark and his friends. It was a storytelling game, and the four friends took turns weaving tales about fairies and mermaids and horses. But Anna's story was different this time: it was not a fairy tale or an adventure story. The story was about a young girl who lived during World War II. Her name was Heidi, and she was Hitler's daughter.
As Anna's story unfolds, Mark is haunted by the image of Hitler's daughter. He wonders what he would have done in her place if he had known his father was an evil man leading the world into a war that was destroying millions of lives. And if Mark had known, would he have had the power and determination to stop him?

intro!!
hi!!!!!!!!!
I’m INeedHjalp, but you can call me Adele or Hjalp.
I’m a 22 year old currently finishing up my Master’s in Elizabethan literature. I graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont on a partial scholarship and am working through a TON of student debt. I’m from Colorado, in El Paso County. I’m trying to become a screen actor but right now I’m working at a local ice cream place.
My favorite things are Shakespeare (particularly M*cbeth), Hozier, Columbo, and my current hyperfixation, Dead Boy Detectives. (FUCK YOU NETFLIX!!!!!!)
Depending on when it crosses my dash, I also reboot stuff from NBC Hannibal, Good Omens, Doctor Who, or some of my old fandoms like Magnus Chase or Night At the Museum.
I’m queer! I’m some flavor of bisexual and biromantic, but I’m also on the aroace spectrum. (I might be demi, I think?) I’m also on the nonbinary spectrum (I’m a guy. But I’m also a girl. It’s complicated).
My preferred pronouns are she/her, though I’m fine with anything, really.
Some of my LOVELY mutuals are @flowers-of-anise, @thequeerforest, @gayoticbeing, @homoquartz, @hooliganhiccups @judeisunsure, @ineffablefood, @understand-some-thing-some-time, @that-one-greml1n, @lunarsolar1, @mirellapryce, and @andiv3r. (I’m forgetting SO MANY PEOPLE. If you are a moot and see this post and you aren’t included, PLEASE reach out. I’m quite forgetful.
I have undiagnosed ADHD. I would go to the doctor, but Money.
My tags:
#ineedhjalp — my tag for posts I make myself.
#hjalp lives — personal posts
#hjalp writes — my fics (check out my new dbda multichap!
#hjalp draws — nothing on here yet!!!!! I do do art though.
#hjalp answers — my asks! PLEASE ask me things!!
I do a LOT or reblogging. A LOT. You have been warned. It’s 99% reblogs on this blog, folks.
As of this moment, I have 2,823 Dead Boy Detectives photos saved to my camera roll.
I support queer people and their rights. I support intersex people and their rights. I support disabled & chronically ill people and their rights. I support women’s rights.
I DO NOT condone Neil Gaiman’s disgusting behavior. He’s dead to me.
I do not condone racism or sexism of any kind.
I don’t get the hate towards furries and therians. While I’m not one myself, bullying is never ok and people should just live their lives.
Trans women are women and trans men are men. Fuck the TERFs!
I will be voting for Kamala Harris in November. KEEP TRUMP AND THE CONSERVATIVES OUT OF OFFICE!!!!!!

So here's the finished rendition (I haven't written poetry in nearly ten years, by the way, so this is going to be very rusty):
Untitled
There's this Stark girl sitting under stars, closer to heaven, and how she holds my heart.
Winter is watching, but I won't give up.
I almost killed her brother and caused the fall of Starks.
The sins of my past, they keep coming back. They have me feeling like I'll never get away. The sins of my past, they keep coming back. They have me feeling...
And now she's lost it all; her home, her family.
I took her as my wife to save her from this creep.
Still she claims that she's not free.
Tywin made me promise to continue the family line.
I'm completely fine with it, but she still needs time.
Her anger fades to fondness.
The hints are in her eyes.
She admits she doesn't hate me, but I don't know why.
The sins of my past, they keep coming back like Catelyn Tully. I wish she'd stay away. The sins of my past, they keep coming back like Catelyn Tully.
I could have had it all; remaining at the Keep.
Instead I broke her heart and now she's slipped her leash.
Tywin will lose his mind.
And she came here with her beast.
I almost had it all; a perfect fantasy.
I tried to kiss my wife; she snapped she's not Cersei.
The price of winning's never cheap.
The Blackfish is waiting; the battle's where I shine.
Negotiation tactics were never on his mind.
He read me for a sinner and mocked me for my crimes.
My dear wife won't forgive me when I take his life.
The sins of my past, they always crawl back. They have me wishing that I stayed at home. The sins of my past, they always crawl back. They have me wishing that...
I could've had it all; approval, family.
I've got to kill to her side and now she's pissed at me.
Can't escape this; I'm not free.
And now I'll lose it all:
For honor, love, and loyalty.
But I can't just let her leave.
Now we're breaking,
how I hate it,
cannot change it,
I hold her grief.
***
Don't really know what to name it. Parts of this Adele parody popped into my head while I was trying to sleep and I ended up writing it down, figuring that would be the end of it. Except my brain kept creating new parts until most of it was finished. I didn't actually incorporate all of the original into the final draft, but I think I captured the story more fully in the final version. There are parts I still don't like, though. I might keep tinkering with it.
Honestly I figure this comes being into poetry as a teenager and my roots are simply coming back out after many years of neglect.
I'm shy, though, which is why I keep posting on Anon. I've been debating whether to post this on Anon or not, but I think I should sign my name to it after all.
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing it with me! ☺️
I have to admit that most poems that I've written were also during my teen years. It's only in my twenties that I've dared to perfect my writing skills more. Poetry was mostly my way of channeling out negative and disruptive feelings. Now, whenever I write a poem it feels like it's never good enough like it was back in my younger years. The words just lack that note of helplessness of a child and a fresh disappointment at the world. I'm too apathetic for it now. 🤣
I'm also glad you found the courage to go off anon to claim your work properly. Never be ashamed or scared about the words you write. They are all art. ❤️

A thought that has struck me recently after Liam’s passing is how differently people cope with fame. Or rather with the gradual fade of fame, which is obviously inevitable for a lot of artists. Some, willingly or unwillingly, recede into the shadows (other ex- boyband members, Zayn before his tour and scores of others I can’t name) while others try to break or soften their fall by clutching desperately at straws on their way down - even though the final trajectory is known to all (Liam, Louis). Then there are a few who are written off multiple times but do make successful comebacks (I can only think of Miley atm). Others (the genuine gems) become legacy artists who will never lose their well deserved status even though they might dip from the public eye for extended periods of time (all the old legends, Beyonce, Adele, and hopefully Harry). I have wondered how Harry would deal with this if he ever had to face this as a test of character (knowing him, fading into oblivion isn't a remote possibility currently). He would probably just go on doing what he loves, whether it be making the kind of music he likes, pursuing his artistic and cinematic interests, cold water swimming, walking and simply being happy without being bothered. He would never name-drop his old band, pursue a reunion publicly or do something desperate or erratic just to gain eyeballs simply because of who he is as a person and knowing this gives me a certain comfort that I stan the right man for the right reasons.
There's so much about life that Harry loves which has nothing to do with fame or even making music. He's intellectually curious! Travel, literature, art, fashion, theatre, cinema, ballet. Cycling, golf, swimming, yoga. He also has diverse friendship groups in England, the US, Italy and Japan.
He's on a long break now instead of releasing standalone singles to stay relevant, or a new album every 18 months like Taylor Swift, and he's enjoying every minute of it and not fretting about his future. He knows he'll be fine even if his fame disappears.

I don’t want to sound snobby or like a film bro but honestly
Films are a form of art.
The people who ‘don’t get’ Nosferatu and films like Only Lovers Left Alive / The VVitch / the Lighthouse / Saltburn are probably the same people who fall into being easily wowed by the Marvel franchise and all the grandiose special effects, shapes and colours and heroic soundscapes
To put it into a fine art perspective, Marvel films and shit like Barry Trotter and the Adults Who Need to Learn to Read Another Fucking Book are pieces like your bread and butter Mona Lisa. No disrespect to daVinci, because I love that man, but y’know what I mean? It’s everywhere, it’s well known, and while yeah, it’s impressive, and you wonder how the fuck it was made, it’s - and I’m cringing internally as I write this - common.
Like when you go to an art school and ask the first years what their favourite painting is, you get some really good ones, but then there’s always a bunch of people who will provide “Mona Lisa” or “Starry Night” - again, no disrespect to Vincent, he is loved and adored in this household.
If you’re a musician, like me, it’s like playing a Rachmaninoff or Liszt piece on the piano and then some little fucker going “I play too!” Then, just when you think you’ve found someone who you can play a duet with, they’re sitting down and playing fucking Für Elise, River Flows in You or the insufferable intro to ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele.
Or if you enjoy reading, it’s like being into the Silmarillion, Coriolanus, The Canterbury Tales or Beowulf and trying to talk about that to someone who has only read ACOTAR or any other title that goes A [blank] of [blank] and [blank] (which are books I fucking avoid like the plague).
And I’m not saying that I’m better than people who like those things, just that it’s distinctly frustrating when you’re trying to have a conversation about one of those subjects and they’re shitting all over it for being ‘bad’. Like it’s fine if you don’t get it, but don’t call it shitty.

Spoiler ahead for the CN livestream, so chapter 14 stuff and brief IS5 mention (also anime season 3 confirmed now). Do not keep reading to avoid spoilers. Just some of my early thoughts. Stream of conciousness, not having thought things through much kind of thing. Kind of just rambling. But tl;dr is that I am excited and it looks good to me.
So, they keep using Civilight Etherna to describe "Theresa" and even outright ask "is she really Theresa?" in the live stream, so no its not a full on resurrection... so from a certain point of view, I was right. Her kit seems super good, she a bard also the freebie operator. Since I do not have Skalter this is good news for me. Big buffs, can do true damage... is neat. Logos is... outright busted. His S1 is insanely good AFK skill which can just auto kill weaker enemies who enters his range, not even an attack and his S2 seems fine, his S3 is also insane. Depending on the numbers he might outperform Eyja but we´ll see, that is always the test is it not? Amiya gets to be an incantation medic, with an outright busted talent (passive health regen on skill, off and on skill gives max HP boosts, this applies to all operators for both it seems?) and a pretty good looking S1 (attacks two enemies, bonus damage) and an amazing S2 with a big burst of damage at first, then slow and true damage with targeting two enemies and.... once per mission... again. Its... fine, I´m not salty.... Anyway, the big star, is limited (I had hoped she would be freebie since her original was limited but oh well) Walter.... or, W has now picked a name for herself, we will have to learn the context in chapter 14, Wis´adel (she has a different S but my keyboard lacks it, it is pronouched as a "sh" sound though). Wis´adel is a flinger sniper who makes all other flingers irelevant and is absolutely busted. Because I am a big W fan (depending on the day it is either her or Kal´tsit who is my second favorite operator) and flingers were in a really bad spot I am kind of ok with this but I still prefer they do not just blatantly directly power creep operators or go too far on insane damage numbers. Her damage seems... a bit too high in my opinion, but because I love her as a character and am excited for her story going forward and her kit seems fun, just really overtuned, I will be pulling. And I guess Degenbrecher and Mlynar already brought us up to this insane damage level so I should not be surprised. Power creep is something I have kept up in many many games I play and there are times where a later power crept state was my favorite period of the game so I will not go and get too hung up on the power creep. Also, I was right to take notice of the floating black crown parts I think cause it is even more prominent now. Bunch of story related stuff here but I wanna wait with talking about that until I have sorted my thoughts and maybe even read chapter 14. On that note, story for chapter 14 has me INCREDIBLY hyped. 13 was my favorite chapter, dethroning chapter 8. And I really wanna know what they are cooking next! Also IS5 has a Kal´tsit boss... she wields a sword!!!! (There are some interesting stuff about Kal and weapons that comes up occasionally, this is in the past it seems so maybe we find out what the deal is?)
I do think its a kind of bad decision to make IS5 sarkaz themed though, I like the sarkaz stuff but I feel IS is best used for parts of the world not explored in as much depth elsewhere. (I think it works with IS3 doing something explored a lot elsewhere but I kinda do not want them to keep doing that). But back to positive stuff the character designs are great. Wis´adel design has really grown on me, I think its a huge downgrade from what she wore before but it feels like it fits her so I am fine with that. Amiya has improved her fashion sense, at first I was sad at no more big coat/cape but that turned out to just be cause the blurry art... she went for a long coat instead of big coat that was actually a normal coat but just too big for her. So it still is something actually made to fit her but still retains the big coat look to some extent. Civilight Etherna boobs seem bigger then Theresa´s(?) Is it to contain the myriad souls? Deep lore implications about this at least! Logos uniform is good but like, so are all Rhodes uniforms. I do not feel it is exceptionally good for a Rhodes uniform but it suits him. Oh and also we see Wis´adel studying in one of the PVs, Hoederer must be so proud she is finally taking her education seriously~! Lastly on addressing the name situation... I will keep using W until chapter 14 is out on global to avoid spoiling people, after that I will probably switch to using her new name. Names are a very important thing especially when you pick them yourself.

Thea Sisters Book Reviews: Part 9
Frozen Fiasco, Venice Masquerade, and Niagara Splash
Frozen Fiasco:
3/10, let me tell you, I did NOT wanna review this book. That should be explanation enough. So here’s the skinny. There’s an author who just published his newest book that everyone abandoned de Mousus’ end-of-term speech to get, and the Thea Sisters went to Iceland to not only visit their friends, but to actually meet the author in person, since he’s their friends’ uncle. But he’s nowhere to be found. They go to his house to see it ransacked. But they find a clue leading to his disappearance. After investigating, they find out his newest book is based on real life and real criminals, and some mice kidnapped him so nobody will find out what they’re doing.
I’m not even gonna bother with the details. This book is a complete snoozefest. I do admit, the concept is very interesting, but the execution was extremely underwhelming, and just like every other god damned book in this era, its villains were so BORING. They’re just cookie-cutter greedy rats. THEY ARE LITERALLY JUST TWO DUDES. NO PERSONALITY, NO REAL MOTIVE, JUST POLLUTING OCEANS BECAUSE “Haha we’re evil and we don’t care about the environment” The side characters were also boring, with yet ANOTHER Forgettable Twink.
I know I said this a million times, but I’m gonna say it again. Don’t bother reading it. Unless you wanna be a hater, then yes, it's very hateable.
Venice Masquerade:
7/10, I actually enjoyed this book…! I know, crazy right?? The plot goes like this. The girls are invited to Venice by their two friends for the Carnival of Venice, festivities with high emphasis on beautiful, colorful, often regal clothing, and most importantly, eye-catching masks. They get all dressed up and go to the Gran Teatro Parade. But something goes wrong. The next thing they know, they hear a cry for help, and a woman’s treasured fan has been stolen! And left behind was a card with a top hat, and the memory of hearing flapping wings from above… Later, the group goes to a party, and the same thing happens. The lights go out, and this time, a headpiece gets stolen, with yet another card left behind and the flapping of wings. They investigate further, and they find out the pieces stolen were all from one artist, Berto del Bon. It eventually all comes to a head at the Flight of the Eagle event, where one final mask was stolen. The Thea Sisters track down the thief just in time to foil his plot to spirit away the works of art he stole. And after he’s caught, they also manage to find how the magician performed his tricks, and where he’s stashed the stolen goods.
There are so many highlights to this book. The plot beats weren’t just checkpoints in a fetch quest, the side characters actually have some pretty interesting conflict, and GASP! A villain that has a motivation other than shallow greed? Even better, a motivation that’s not even from a bad place. It turns out, he’s the descendent of Berto del Bon, and he has made it his life’s mission to reclaim the fame and glory his ancestor so rightfully deserved. And also, he’s not the usual business man or random poacher, he’s a phantom thief, a magician. Both very interesting characters to play around with in fiction, especially as villains. And also, the Thea Sisters’ friends’ father is a police inspector, and he’s actively trying to stop them from investigating the case, especially his own children, because he worries they’re too young, and that’s a very good source of conflict in the story.
Although I am very disappointed that such a memorable villain didn’t get so much as an alias, I don’t have very many complaints about this book! Definitely worth reading!
Niagara Splash:
5/10, it was fine. It was certainly a book. So basically Paulina and Nicky are invited by their friend from Green Mice, Adele (no, not the singer), to go to Toronto’s first guided bird watching tour. They first tour around the city, then go to a hockey practice and meet her brother Liam. They also meet Rob, the irrelevant antagonist. They go about their day, and Liam and Justin reveal a surprise trip to Niagara Falls. But then, at the fireworks show, Justin goes missing. There’s a text from him, but it turns out to be false when he doesn’t show up for hockey practice the next day. The rest of the Thea Sisters end up coming to Canada to help, and they eventually find him. The culprit who abducted Justin was Elliot, another player on his team, and the other candidate for team captain.
Okay so Rob as an antagonist was boring as hell. He’s literally just Craig but with even less of a character. And that’s saying something. He’s pretty much irrelevant, he’s just a red herring for the girls to get distracted by. The conflict itself was fine. Nothing bad, but nothing to write home about either. The storm provided a good obstacle I guess. The side characters were nothing-burgers, as per usual. Same thing with the “villain” of the book. I also wish they stuck with one topic. Like seriously, is this book gonna be about Niagara Falls, bird-watching, or hockey?? Pick a damn lane. I also hate the fact that Niagara Falls was only relevant for a single chapter, even when it's literally the title of the book.
Don’t waste your time. Just…don’t.

A Red, Red Rose
by Robert Burns
O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.
.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:
.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
.
And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️   ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Adelle,
You are my Rose, red and fine. You are my longing, please be mine, as I am yours deep in your heart forevermore.
I love you deeply my beautiful Lover ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ 🌈

Top Albums of 2023
Hey, how ya doing? I got sick the last week of 2023 when I intended to write this so here I am in 2024 looking back on some of my favorite long players last year.
I saw so many of my favorite acts in 2023, it was probably the best live music year ever. So much so I spent what felt like a whole morning creating a "reel" on "instagram". The fruits of which you can watch here.
Enough about live music though, this is about wonderful studio recordings, so here's what's made the long list and then we'll kick straight into the top 10 with accompanying videos.
16 - Romy - Mid Air
15- Jessie Ware - That! Feels! Good!
14- Gracie Abrams - Good Riddance
13 - Lana Del Rey - Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd?
12 - Bombay Bicycle Club - My Big Day
11 - The Bug Club - Rare Birds: Hour of Song
10 - Young Fathers - Heavy Heavy
If you haven't seen Young Fathers Glastonbury set in 2023, I recommend you do so after you've read this blog. Gutted they cancelled their brooklyn show, but I hope to catch it this year.

9 - Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
Caroline Polacheck is the closest we've got to Kate Bush in 2023, the detail she puts into her visuals and the choreography of her performances, its high art. The track below isn't on the album, but it was the moment I realized her brilliance.
youtube
8 - Gorillaz - Cracker Island
This felt like an under the radar release from Gorillaz, at least here in the states. It's the first time Albarn has worked with Greg Kurstin (Adele, Mccartney, Kendrick) and you can hear his influence as it's a bit more poppy than previous releases.
youtube
7 - Jeff Rosenstock - Hellmode
If you've read any of my blogs over the past decade you will have seen a lot of appearances from US Punk / Ska legend Jeff. The reason being; he doesn't make bad records.
youtube
6 - Sleaford Mods - UK Grim
How do you follow 2021's career highlight Spare Ribs? With more of the same, that's how. 12 albums in to their career now and they're still gathering pace. Blistering, acerbic, hilarious as ever.
youtube
5 - The Hives - The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons
The first new music from The Hives in 11 years and they return with a literal bang. This album is as good as anything they came out with when they first charmed their way onto the scene in the early 2000's. The bellies may be podgier, Pelle's kicks aren't as high, but the riffs are as spritely as ever. Still one of the greatest live bands around.
youtube
4 - Blur - Ballad of Darren
I always get a bit anxious about a new blur album, they don't have to release new music, they have a back catalog that guarantees them legend status already. Releasing new music risks tainting that legacy so far into their career. I needn't worry, Ballad of Darren is a beautiful record with a legitimate brand new stadium filling anthem to add to their repertoire.
youtube
3 - Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
Bit of a surprise this one, maybe more for me than you dear reader. I didn't get the fuss of the first album (still don't) it sounded like any one of a million young pop darlings. But GUTS is different, it's eclectic, it's beautifully written, it tears at your heart, it raises your fists, it makes you dance. It has everything really. She's the real deal. It's objectively not made for a 42 year old man, but great music is great music and I bloody love this.
youtube
2 - Jenny Lewis - Joy'All
It was a tough call between this and Olivia, but i've given it to Jenny for the 20+ years experience she has on the young upstart. Jenny Lewis is maturing into a fine groove, she's replaced Ryan Adams as a much more palletable country-folk spot in my heart. Her songwriting continues to get better with age.
youtube
1 - The National - First Two Pages of Frankenstein | Laugh Track
Stadium filling, Taylor Swift collaborating, David Letterman approved super band The National. It's a wild trajectory my favorite band has taken over the last few years. No longer critically acclaimed everyones favorite unheard of band, they're rightly at the upper table of indie-rock and its fully deserved. Not satisfied with releasing one beautiful record this year they follow it up soon after with the surprise Laugh Track an equally brilliant album in its own right. Most bands would kill to have one record this good in their whole career, its frankly not fair they can do two this good in a year. A joint number one for me as I can't separate them.
youtube
There you have it, 2023 all wrapped up, full of BIG acts with a smattering of newbies thrown in for good measure and probably the most female representation I've had in an end of year list.
You can hear these and LOADS more in my 2023 playlist.
And if you like any of this and trust my judgement follow my 2024 playlist which I curate throughout the year adding newly released tracks.
Aaaaaand away...

The way we get dressed every morning is as personal as it gets. There are outfit repeaters, vintage treasure hunters, and even emotional dressers. But while everyone loves a good fashion trend, here at InStyle, we're interested in the deeper stuff, too: the way jewelry makes us feel, the way a beloved coat can spark joy on a cold day, the way a pair of shoes can pull a whole look together. How I Get Dressed unpacks fashion routines, rituals, and go-tos—straight from the fashion tastemakers we love. You wouldn't guess by looking at designer Sally LaPointe that she has one of the most colorful and vibrant brands on the New York Fashion Week calendar. Season after season, she puts on a chromatically-ordered runway show for her eponymous label that's a stark contrast to the designer's preferred all-black uniform. But, 15 years in, LaPointe has made peace with that. "My clothing is my art; my clothing is my painting," she tells me a few days before her New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2025 show, which marks the brand's anniversary. Courtesy of Sally LaPointe A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, LaPointe trained as a fine artist in her childhood and later developed a knack for fashion. Her debut show at New York Fashion Week in September 2010 went so well that Lady Gaga pulled a look from it hours after it had been on the runway. "That was when she was just coming out and that kind of set it off," LaPointe remembers. Since then, the parade of celebs that have worn LaPointe ranges from Adele and Jennifer Lopez to Beyoncé and Doja Cat. Last season, instead of a fashion show, LaPointe released a lookbook featuring her spring 2025 collection, modeled by none other than Oprah Winfrey. What attracts such a vast and varied group of women to LaPointe is the brand's ability to put forth a statement and make it seem effortless. Wearing her bias-cut gowns or sheer bodysuits may seem like risky business, but her approach to design transforms an otherwise stuffy bodycon dress into a garment that feels more like dressed-up pajamas. It's a skill she credits to the simple fact that she is a woman making clothes for other women. "I have an advantage because I am a woman and I know what it feels like to be a woman," she says. "I understand what it's like to dress curves and what it feels like in the dressing room, and so a huge part for me is the ease of the clothing." Oprah Winfery in LaPointe's spring/summer 2025 lookbook. Ruven Afanador While LaPointe may dress in all-black, don't mistake a uniform for lack of style. Her signature long dark hair and sleeved bodysuits make her a quintessential downtown New York woman (to say nothing of the fact that she works and lives there). And she can flex a look—a LaPointe, of course—when she has to: "I do still keep some of the loud pieces when needed." On the eve of her company's 15th anniversary, LaPointe spoke with InStyle about her design perspective, uniform dressing, and the next step for her label. Hugh Lippe On the Early Days of LaPointe I started the company with my best friend—and now my business partner. I always knew I had something to say, and she just had an unbelievable way of taking that and making it come to reality. My whole brand has just been from the beginning [about] empowerment and being authentic to yourself and believing in the power of you. Even though the brand has evolved over the years, truly that was the original mission that we still hold today. On Her Celebrity Clientele It's really about the wearer's state of mind and how she feels. And that's the way I've been able to get this crazy range between politicians to musicians, from younger to more mature. It almost doesn't matter who you are, or what you are. It was our first show 15 years ago—I'll never forget it, waking up the next morning and [someone said,] "Gaga is pulling the dress from your runway," and she was the first [celebrity]. And every celebrity that's come to us, I can say they come because they want to wear it. It's not like we are contracting these people or anything, and again that goes back to the mission of just focusing on the product. Beyoncé wearing custom LaPointe on the Renaissance Tour. Instagram On Her Personal Aesthetic I think back to my foundation. I was classically trained as a fine artist in oil painting by the age of 6 or 7. My hero growing up was Claude Monet. I wear all-black because my clothing [I design] is my art, my clothing is my painting, my clothing is my expression. I'm Claude Monet in his hat and suit that he wore every day. My bodysuit—I literally have, like, 10 of them. And my matte crepe pants. Again, because I just need to be in a uniform day to day. But then I do have some shocking standout pieces. I keep all of our beautiful furs and our statement coats. I'll go out in a bright green dress to an event, and it's like, "Oh my god," but everyday is kind of simple black or more basic pieces. On LaPointe's New York DNA It's funny; someone asked the other day if I ever wanted to show in Paris. The brand is so iconic and synonymous with that downtown energy of New York, and we're just owning that. I live a couple blocks from my studio. We've been here for so long, and it kind of has just seeped into the brand. I do a lot of shooting right outside of our studio. We also manufacture about 80 or 90 percent in New York, which is rare. On the LaPointe Bride We started noticing that people were wearing our cream [pieces] for bridal. It was really just natural, and it just did really well. I think it's the idea of being outside of the traditional bridal, what you "should do" or "what your mother-in-law or mother wants you to do." I think it goes very well with the energy of our brand. Ruven Afanador On the Next 15 Years We've done such an emphasis on the product as a ready-to-wear collection. I would love to, now that that is in stone, start to expand. I want to think about what feels right to our brand and what that is exactly, I'm not sure yet. But expanding and becoming a more global household name. And expanding into other products that could excite the customer in a different way. Source link
