F*ck anons
Hate, Harassment, and Threats: Coping and Handling
It happens and it's happened since the rise of LJ. I remember getting my first hatepost and how much it upset me, but I was never a target in the way that many were. LJ was truly the wild and wooly west - Dodge City or Deadwood, when people thought it would be a utopia. We had greyfaces, anons, sock puppets, and meat puppets. For people transitioning from controlled environments like e-Groups, Listserv, and forums it was not the mod-free utopia that they might have wished for. Real fandom scandals and legitimate harm to fans have been built on anons, sockpuppets, and greyfaces.
Terminology
Anon: Anonymous account either from outside the service or from an established account that has been anonymized.
Greyface: LJ term for an account with no identifiers, created explicitly to harass.
Sock Puppet: Account created by one person with the intent of being perceived as a separate individual.
Meat Puppet: Also used to be called a fanpoodle. A person whose actions are directed by another. Also called a muppet for having the controller's hand shoved so far up their ass that it can work their mouth.
Defining Hateposting/Cyberstalking/Harassment/Threats
First, there is a federal law -18 U.S. Code § 2261A Stalking - that defines stalking and harassment. Full text is here, with excerpt below:
(2) (Whoever) with the intent to kill, injure, harass, intimidate, or place under surveillance with intent to kill, injure, harass, or intimidate another person, uses the mail, any interactive computer service or electronic communication service or electronic communication system of interstate commerce, or any other facility of interstate or foreign commerce to engage in a course of conduct that— (A)places that person in reasonable fear of the death of or serious bodily injury to a person, a pet, a service animal, an emotional support animal, or a horse described in clause (i), (ii), (iii), or (iv) of paragraph (1)(A); or (B)causes, attempts to cause, or would be reasonably expected to cause substantial emotional distress to a person described in clause (i), (ii), or (iii) of paragraph (1)(A),
Laws can vary from state to state. 48 states have some laws on the books, with 44 having criminal penalties. You'll need to contact local law enforcement or look them up on your state legislature's website.
All forms of online harassment can be grouped under the label of cyberbullying. How do you know what is or isn't cyberbullying? There is a comprehensive list. Even some things that you didn't think might be bullying are, in fact, bullying. Unfortunately, the FBI seems to focus on financial crimes and scams, and have changed their reporting pages to reflect that. In all cases using the internet to convey threats as defined under 18 U.S. Code § 2261A need to be documented and reported to the FBI.
Documenting: Keep the Reciepts
Documenting online abuse is key to stopping online abuse. To be Tumblr specific, screenshots of DMs, replies to your posts, posts harassing you, reblogs of your posts with abuse in the comments and tagjacking or abusive hashtags, screenshots of anons/sockpuppets and harassing asks need to be kept. You need your receipts.
Fuck Anons
Anons are not worth your mental health or the pleasure and community you derive from fandom.
"But some of my followers are shy!"
They can create an account that they can use just for doing asks. Exposing you to abuse and bullying should not be the price of someone being shy. I have also turned on anons when someone has asked me to via DM, in a post comment, or via an anon comment on my Ao3 so that they could send me an ask without unmasking themselves. This protects me and protects them.
Tumblr recently started requiring a valid email address to send an anon without being signed in. This could be seen a couple of different ways - Tumblr wants some sort tabs on people using their site anonymously, or that they want people sending anons to create an account. There is nothing to stop an anon from creating a burner email account in order to harass, so that only goes so far.
Block anons. I am serious. Just go into your account settings and do it. You can even turn off asks entirely.
Per Tumblr: "Anonymous asks are not associated with a specific account, and blocking those will block the IP address of the sender."
So, if you block an anon and someone suddenly disappears from your followers, or you get a follower asking why they can't see or interact with your blog, then you have your answer as to where your anon bullying might well be coming from.
However, isn't it easier to just turn off anons?
Yes. It is. My anons are kept off 99.9 percent of the time and I sleep just fine.
Other Tips and Tricks
You can control who reblogs your posts. The default is that anyone on Tumblr can reblog. You can also block anyone from reblogging. The new feature offers middle ground by allowing you to add users allowed to reblog by mentioning them. I don't know if this extends to other parties reblogging from the people you allowed to reblog, however. Click on the little gear to access the dropdown.
From the Settings Menu
In addition to the default, you have two other options under the dropdown.
Tumblrs you follow and that have been mutuals with you for a week can reply
Only Tumblrs you follow can reply.
Keep the people you follow private by toggling this off.
Toggle off to stop DMs from people you don't follow.
Hide your Tumblr from people without a Tumblr, or from people who are signed out. Remove your blog from Tumblr search results or from search engine crawlers.
Finally, you can block DMs on a case by case basis, too.
Finally, it can be hard to start over, but when the bullying is too much and too persistent, you can back up your blog or take it private and start a new Tumblr with people you trust.

it seems like you have your own beliefs and i have mine, but in regards to #4 it seems like you justify the fears of the zionists. of course jewish people are afraid of persecution. but using that kind of thinking to justify their reason as to why they act like that is extremely racist and islamophobic. why are you giving then free ammunition in reasons as why they have reason to subjugate the indigenous people of that land? i won't get into the shaw commission like you did, but you failed to bring up Why there was a conflict between the Jews and Arabs in the first place which would at least then give context to those murders in the first place. you shouldn't just bring up thise numbers without telling the background especially on a site like tumblr
Explaining the fears of Israeli Right Wing Nationalists is not the same thing as agreeing with those fears.
Explaining how they justify their actions based on those fears is not the same as agreeing with their actions.
I am not giving anyone free ammunition to anything, I am explaining what is already either spoken aloud by Israeli Nationalists, or which is apparent and unspoken as a psychological attitude.
There are indigenous Jews to Israel. This is why I keep using the term "Israeli Nationalists" or "Right Wing Israeli Nationalists." Because I'm not here to argue that no Jews are indigenous to Palestine.
I didn't "fail to bring up" why there was a conflict in the first place regarding the 1929 riots. I told you the Shaw Commission was freely available to read online.
which would at least then give context to those murders in the first place.
The commission said the initial murder of the Jewish child chasing after a football didn't have any "excuse" of an earlier murder to spark it. I also pointed to the tensions regarding the Western wall.
There's also a section pointing to economic and political anxieties of Arabs in Palestine at the time, but generally speaking reading the report also shows where these anxieties are not always fully founded in the facts of the time, or perhaps don't entirely hold up today, even if parts of them were causes for concern, or did have greater impact and played out -- though they need not have.
Ex:
Now It is known to the Arab people of Palestine that pressure is constantly being exercised by the Zionist authorities on the Palestine Government to admit immigrants in large numbers; it is also known to them that the one period when immigration was heavy was followed by severe unemployment and economic disturbance. Many Arabs derive material benefit from Jewish immigration but, as a people, the Arabs of Palestine must connect immigration on a large scale with the unfortunate events of 1927 and 1926. The argument that the taxpayer has had to support the immigrant Jew no doubt gained wide currency in those fears and the fact that a large part of the burden of maintaining the unemployed was borne by Zionist funds would either not be known to or, if known, would not impress the fellaheen.
The immigrants came to steal their jobs and drained the economy! They were a burden on the taxpayer!
...Except the immigrants in question benefited the economy overall, and Arabs did enjoy this benefit, the immigrants were made to prove more financial independence than the initial policy required, and they were impacted severely during economic depression, and finally they didn't rely on the tax payer, but instead were maintained by Zionist funds when they were impacted.
But those truths didn't matter at the time. Likewise discussions in Zurich that Jews hoped to gain a natural majority in a future Jewish state led to replacement fears/anxieties.
The report calls these anxieties a factor that could have contributed to the riots.
There's more. There's 200 pages. If you want the background, READ IT.

So I'm not sure if this is one of the dog questions on the list (it's too long for my brain to stick with T_T) but I would like to hear about your first dog that was *yours*. The first one you chose for yourself, rather than just a family dog or a partner's dog or what have you. Rescues you chose to take on/keep count as much as ones you bought!
Oh, that's Tribble, of course. My best girl, who's been with me ten years. My good, good leap of faith. (Questions mentioned from the Dogblr ask meme).
In the spring of 2012, I was finishing my senior year of college, interviewing at graduate school programs and coming to terms with the fact that I would be earning a salary and financially completely independent from my parents for the foreseeable future. I was going to be able to get a dog that I was going to be able to do sports with.
(At the time I was living with my family's dog Oliver, whom I generally described as a Corgi rolled in lint and who had already had one knee replaced. Around that time, he tried to hop up onto a curb and tripped over his own feet and fell on his face. I was not about to subject his knees to high impact exercise.)
I had been yearning to play agility for years and never been able to. I could get whatever dog I wanted, as long as I could find it under 35lbs (the upper weight limit for dogs in most of the apartments I was looking at) and it was within plausible deniability Not A Pit Bull.
I was full of daydreams. I was looking speculatively at Whippets and Manchester Terriers and Rat Terriers and Shelties, but I knew full well that I could identify a pretty good sport prospect from rescue, too... and I was gonna be broke for a While. But I was also keenly aware that I was about to go straight from college to being a first year PhD student halfway across the country, an endeavor of unknowable difficulty and struggle. It was clearly the sort of thing I should ease into slowly. Obviously I shouldn't actually get a new dog until I had moved and been in my program for six months or so.
But I was so, so excited, and dogshopping was a much less intimidating prospect than making decisions about things like what lab I would work in and where in the country I should live. Also I was in the process of shedding most of my local friend group in the wash of dissolving one of those hideously intense weird friendships that are so common for queer college kids, and a big chunk of the rest of my in person social life required facing down what was, in retrospect, a nasty case of PTSD fear response around other openly queer people derived from immersing myself in baaaaaasically all the online asexuality dialogue that existed in 2012.* It's not like I couldn't use the distraction.
So I made myself a bargain. I would make an extremely detailed list of traits I wanted in a dog ranging from the practical (size, height, ability to rent with, trainable, good structure for speed, jumping, and fast turns) to the slightly ridiculous and purely aesthetic (pointy ears; brindle or tri; no curly tails; short hair). I would restrict myself to perusing the website run by volunteers trying to make the local county animal control as low-kill as possible, which was a feat since the county animal control had ten kennels and a guaranteed three-day stray hold, plus a seven-day opening for dogs to get adopted through. I figured that the fast turnover, plus my own innate tendency to dither, would keep me from actually adopting a dog until I was safely installed in my new job and my new life.
This worked very well right up until the Monday of my last finals week, when the shelter website posted a dog named "Pockets" that checked literally all of my boxes, at least from what I could see from a still photo. She was perfect. And she was listed as a cattle dog mix, which was great: I couldn't see any evidence of a drop of cattle dog in that dog, but there was my plausible deniability for landlords. Goddammit. At least, I told myself, someone else would pick her up and everything would be fine; she'd be adopted by someone else and I could tell myself it just wasn't meant to be.
Then on Tuesday the "DANGER: DANGER" alarm went off on her listing. (It later turned out that she'd been brought in after having maybe? unclear? been cornered and perhaps? bitten a child or something? and her rabies hold had eaten all of her grace time.) Fuck. Fuck! It is perhaps worth noting that that shelter's euthanasia date was Wednesday, so if she was out of time, there really wasn't any time to sort things out.
I panicked--this looked like such a great dog--and made the mistake of asking my roommate if she'd mind if we added what was then a third dog to our three-person household for the remainder of the lease. There was a great mad scramble to make sure I could legally take her in and the landlord was okay with it: I decided that even if she wasn't a great fit for me, I could always rehome her myself later. I put in an application in early on Wednesday morning, then showed up first thing on Thursday before my very last final to meet this dog I had theoretically applied to adopt. She was clearly pretty overwhelmed, but her structure was gorgeous, she was friendly and politely interested in the dogs whose kennels we walked by, and she was capable of listening to me and paying attention. So.... fuck it, I thought, and updated my application to confirm the application.
I picked her up from her spay that Saturday--that shelter didn't, at the time, bother to spay or neuter the dogs until it was confirmed someone actually wanted them--and brought her home, where she promptly stretched her legs, looked around, and found herself a quiet place to pee that didn't (to her) seem to be very used. It happened to be where we kept the router, which is how I discovered that she was not house trained. She learned fast, though--that was the last accident I think she ever had that wasn't a matter of illness--and she soaked up all the training I could throw at her with enthusiasm pretty much immediately. You can actually see me posting my excitement with an earlier account when I adopted her.
Fuck, that was a good impulse decision. She's an amazing dog and we've learned so much together. I love her so much.
She's my buddy, and we've been through a lot together. I love her so, so much.
*no one I ever met at my college LGBTQ group was anything less than polite and kind to me, by my standards of the time: I was generally faced with a desire to understand one another well enough to act in solidarity. I'm still very fond of the people I met there and follow the careers of quite a few. But immersing myself into the online reactions took a toll, one that would have me grappling with regular panic attacks for a few years more.

My Issues/Problems/Disgusts Resolved(?)
When you have issues, troubles, or disgusts with anything, the hardest but relieving thing to do coming to terms with them. A couple of years ago, I made a trilogy of posts exploring three people I found ranging from repugnant to devious. It came at a time when frustrations might as well have come out and frankly they were just about people everyone was more than aware of online. Enough time has passed and while this isn't just gonna be me apologizing or being remorseful for what I said, I want to I guess truly bury the hatchet and resolve these stuck-around feelings as somebody that has... been humbled a lot over these years (make of that what you will). This is coming from somebody that knows a lot about staying in your own head. So yeah, let's talk.
Lily Orchard [OP Link]
Gotta say that... nothing's really changed only in that it's all less with anger now. Put this first because it'll be short. To be as sincere as I can, she's just an unlikable person. Regardless of her out there opinions and ideas of media literacy, or her choices in fictional tastes, I won't be the guy that will throw every evil label and the kitchen sink onto her. Calling the spade a spade, even as a former fan I saw that within reason it was seeing a very insatiable and arrogant media "critic" with negative social skills. Hell, the mentions you see of her on Tumblr or Twitter especially are just the open secret that most people don't like her. For me, that resentment has become passive chagrin.
I won't convince anybody of who she can really be, how bad she can be at being both original and derivative, or what she is potentially. I wouldn't say a lost cause, but there's nothing complicated about this anymore. She's just a massive asshole. Not because of any human characteristic of hers, her opinions, or what was known about her in the past. Take away any personal semantics or bias, I remain only puzzled about how her circle is able to tolerate her presence because she's just an unlikable person and that's all on her.
Butch Hartman {OP Link}
2020 basically was the year where a man responsible for one of the most popular cartoons on Nickelodeon finished swan-diving his reputation just as fast as the likes of John K and Justin Roiland. From scheming a streaming service that still isn't out of early access yet to making a Christian flash cartoon that looks 20 years too late. It's a classic story of pride coming before the fall, culminating in his Youtube channel being a wasteland aside from sketch tiktoks that barely make the thousands in views despite his huge follower count. As much as LSMark looked to make good-faith conversation with him recently, Butch basically became a ghost now after all the controversies died down.
Now despite what I said initially, Butch's fall in reputation is definitely not comparable to Kricfalusi or Roiland's; we've heard nothing of him physically taking advantage of anybody in or out the industry. The worse he's done is take advantage of his legacy for either financial or supportive gains. This is not as bad as domestic or sexual assault of course, but it spoke wonders of how the ego of big time creators can kill any goodwill and faith when they're not actually considerate of the following that respect them. A quick search of his name on Youtube is more about the people discussing his controversies than anything he worked on. People still discuss Danny Phantom and Fairly Oddparents, hell the Cosmo mpreg episode is a meme to this day, but with the detachment towards Butch as the creator.
I'm fine with this predicament, but it's sad to believe this was all on him. It wasn't just about Oaxis being a scam or him saying "he created your childhood" or heaven forbid his attempts of promoting religious healing, it was about seeing a creator of some things you liked reveal himself as someone in a bubble that you lose any idea in looking up to. It's not exactly "Don't Meet Your Heroes," more "Don't glue on rose-tinted glasses". I won't force or insult what remains of Butch's "fanbase" for sticking with him, but this definitely woke me up in terms of how I view the creators I love. Humility is the special word in all this, where some creators can have some disapproving moments but you can still have respect for their craft. With Butch, it wasn't even him entirely that made his shows look great. As of now, he's making poorly illustrated kid's bible stories with Fairly Oddparents getting a live-action show that Nickelodeon regretted making immediately after releasing to the point of erasing it all not even a full year after it was first announced. Even when things are probably fine now, the guy fell off as hard as I expected originally. I can seriously put this behind knowing I was factually right on the money the first time and that does put a smile on my face.
Also... Butt Shartman. That's all, let's move on.
Mysterious Mr. Enter (OP Link)
I'll say this was the reason why I made this post. Lily and Hartman I say speak of an absence of change and reflecting on that absence. Mr. Enter is different and, cut to the chase, it has to do with this recent video.
youtube
I've talked my fair share of shit toward Mr. Enter these past few years, reasonably so. At the same time, my vitriol toward him came from some semblance of respect. Many have to this day brought up Mr. Enter calling out the writers of Spongebob for a particular episode they did, but John is right in that that was around the time he barely had a following and just started out with media reviews. Mr. Enter has made bad opinions, I will never deny that and this isn't me defending him, but I see that he can recognize they're bad. He's better than Lily Orchard in that... he can admit being wrong and grow from it. We meme and shit on this dude, but for me, there was still that modicum of respect I had for him being this dedicated. In spite of the harassment or the justified backlash, he's still putting in the effort.
Over the years, I've come to understand that media critics can have different understandings of media. That doesn't mean every critic is always right in their own way, grifters exist for a reason, but I don't see Mr. Enter as a grifter-type critic compared to people who to this day complain about The Last Jedi. He can have some off takes on the types of humor or tropes in a cartoon, but more often than not he's being sincere. That's why I say he still has some respect from me for as long as I've known him. Every bad take aside, I don't take him as somebody who is "ruining media criticism".
I don't agree with everything he says or believes, but John's doing better than I can say for Butch Hartman or Lily Orchard especially. He's doing Admirable Animations again, something I brought up originally, and am intrigued to see that he indirectly took my advice. He can work well with more positive videos. I never felt he was an actively terrible critic, Turning Red meme aside, and I didn't want to just treat him as the bane of online media criticism or the worst thing to ever happen. The dude has his faults but can acknowledge them better than most online personalities I've seen who feel it's weak to admit anything. He's no different from the Nostalgia Critic where the tumultuous attitudes toward them in the past have subsided where yeah, I'm not gonna side with every bad opinion or choice they make but they aren't actively killing any goodwill I would have for them. It's not pity, but making your empathy less black and white compared to people more deserving of scrutiny. Overall I still have hopes Mr. Enter will do better, imperfect as things can get.
Conclusion
I wanna say this post and the former three I made reflected the increased awareness and discourse of the parasocial relationships we can have, especially online. There have been plenty of people that certainly abused their status and paid for it, these three stayed in the mind for how consistently they tracked in soiling their reputation. At the same time, how wary we are about things or the people we followed isn't always cut and dry. That's why the title has the question mark in parentheses, nothing ever ends so I'm not saying these current feelings will just be buried away and forgotten forever. I just know that for this current future, it's better to seriously lay things to rest while subconsciously keeping in mind what can be done differently from now on. To conclude, this is all better than having to care about people like Andrew Tate or Elon Musk living another day.

Here are some common types of passive income:
Dividend Stocks: Investing in stocks that pay regular dividends allows you to earn a portion of the company’s profits.
Rental Income: Owning real estate and renting out properties can provide a steady stream of passive income.
Real Estate Crowdfunding: Participating in crowdfunding platforms allows you to invest in real estate projects and receive a share of the profits.
Peer-to-Peer Lending: Platforms that facilitate peer-to-peer lending allow you to lend money to individuals or small businesses in exchange for interest payments.
Create and Sell Intellectual Property: This could include writing books, creating music, designing software, or developing other forms of intellectual property that can be sold or licensed.

Paying Attention- Writing Workshop with Betts Week 2
@bettsfic asks to notice three things.
In Nonfiction, write about your day and pull a story out of three things
In Poetry, place three things coming together
In Fiction, the first incites incident, second in the middle, end with third.
Abstract, use a stylistic change, write sentence fragments, no verbs.
NONFICTION
First Thing
The itsy bitsy little white spider, which only comes at night, keeps trying to web my computer. I will not kill it, though I can. I can't. It's trying like I am trying. It isn't harming anyone as I am not harming anyone. I admit, I hope to see it tonight, like an old friend. The first night I don't see it I will wonder where it went, maybe behind the desk to die, maybe it's too busy making love, or perhaps savaged by some bigger little creature. … I didn't see the little white spider tonight. I may have seen its killer who needed to go from one side of the room to the other, which I didn't get in the way of or ask his activities prior to.
How often are life forms harmed for wanting to use something available? But because of their looks or some perceptions, from the haves, to said life forms, the have nots, are denied? Human history says infinite times, though it isn't the way of the inhuman. A simple act of kindness can go a long way is the saying.
Second Thing
The insect that I realized I saw for weeks, maybe months, hanging on the net outside my building, the net is for construction, in the same spot is called a spotted lanternfly. I searched NY1 and found the name on the first go. The city has given all citizens a license to kill… oh James. Was it goading me, of course not. The tree around the building, perhaps my plants if it can reach them, is its target(s). Even absent the net it can't reach my plants… I checked. Of course, it is gone now, and I see each hole in the net, not quite Swiss cheese but aging. Where is that thing? … I went into the kitchen with the sun back in its bed, it's back.
The human community has many in it that speak of equality, or nonviolence, while preaching violence or inequality. The fiscally wealthy or more than average knowledgeable human is supposed to live peacefully or integrated to the fiscally poor or uncommonly ignorant human. But not the fiscally poor or ignorant non-human. The most challenging bias is the one that doesn't deny race while demanding an inescapable utilization of race.
Third Thing
I noticed today how little half and half is put into black coffee in stores, bodegas, delis. Ground coffee beans brewed is pretty strong, a dab of half and half isn't doing much. It isn't effective. Black coffee with half and half means and an off black, not pitch black. I wonder how many times I got my relations Black coffee with half and half and these stores gave me black coffee with a dab of nothing. My chemistry memory says subsaturated.
How often are we cheated in plain sight? How many pennies have stores acquired in selling 99 cent items absent giving a penny back? Is it fiscal prudence to be part of such activity? Does pax or peace financially derive from what irregularities any community allows? Labor from the enslaved? Real estate sales of stolen land? Computer aided financial manipulations at such a grand speed or inhuman speed, the rules of human markets are unimportant, while still touted as essentials? How can people online have millions of followers while only tens of engagements to their post? Cheats in plain sight are as old as humanity. Can humanity mature beyond them?
Story Concept
A deli worker is always cheap with the half in half whenever he makes coffee. One day he is startled by a little itsy bitsy white spider, meaning him no harm, on a web aside the coffee machine, based on the worker's neglect. The worker swipes at the spider, destroying its web, and injures it. The spider seeks to prove its decency to itself and learns, from the insect network, that a killer planthopper has chosen the deli workers home to make a feast. But, the corpses of the Killer Planthopper give off a toxic fume that will kill humans. How will the crippled little white spider make it from the deli to the deli worker's home and cause the killer plant hopper to move on or desist?
Other Things My Attention Noted Later
Some days later I realized something in a dialog side a fellow artist on DeviantArt. The computer programs commonly, while falsely called A.I. (artificial intelligence) don't seem to make fractals or are engineered to make fractals. Fractals are arithmetic equations converted into visual patterns. I find it interesting that the fractal market doesn't seem to be saturated with content from said programs. Plus, I saw some white east Asians celebrating something concerning Buddhism, giving out beads. I didn't even check out what it involved, through a search.

IT Careers for Beginners: The Starting Point
Breaking into the tech industry can feel daunting, especially if you’re a beginner with little to no background in IT. Fortunately, there are numerous IT careers for beginners that allow you to build foundational knowledge while gaining practical experience.
