As Far As The World Goes (AFATWG) is a Sims 3 graphic novel and a long-running generational family drama following the overlapping life of several families. It starts as the story of a whole town, with narration coming and going between households, but gradually focusing on the Golzine mobster family. Most storylines are connected to them in some way or another. Golzine heirs all have different styles but are bound by honor and duty (and a tendency to have complicated love stories).

In AFATWG, there is drama a-plenty, with a pinch of comedy, there are heaps of romance, but also action scenes (guns!), a whole cast of supernaturals, and above all, there are morally grey characters struggling with internal conflicts.

The beginning of the story is long-winded and confusing and was not published in graphic novel format, which is why it exists now only in the form of summaries.

Disclaimer: Mature content such as nsfw scenes or trigger warnings (blood or drugs for example) are properly tagged. There is no gore but violence does occur in that world.

They have left unresolved conflicts behind and need to cope with their new situation.

Will they be able to retrieve their former appearance and go back to their timeline? And what happened to their families in the meantime?

DnD Tales of Tugs #2

Later That Night:

As we left the well area, we made a pitstop in a dilapidated building to rest up for the night, only to be greeted by a voice in the middle of the night on my watch demanding we give tribute and money.

Suddenly the door melted away with a blatant acid splash and revealed a dragon the size of a horse!! I'd never seen one before. I asked it what kind of tribute it wanted, and it demanded everything we had, and all our gold. But Jemima was having none of it.

She had apparently used her shift watch to cook up these horrible disgusting little meal worms as a snack - I'm going to vomit just thinking about this part I HATE BUGS! - and offered them to the dragon who took one whiff of them and was suddenly salivating. Like EW who does that?

The dragon tried to argue with Jemima, shrinking in size until he was about the size of a Saint Bernard, but Jemima's powers of persuasion are beyond this world and she got the dragon to actually say "Give me some, please?" when she prompted him to say the 'magic word'. When he did, she rewarded him with one of the - hurk - meal worms and he was instantly on our side.

I asked the dragon if it would like to join us on our mission as he could eat all the meal wo - hurk- the meal wor - hurk - Oh those dastardly little creepy crawlies that make my skin crawl and feathers ruffle uncomfortably. At least if he ate them I wouldn't have to worry about her mixing them into anything I ate.

We convinced the dragon to join us because there was a goblin cave that we needed to venture into to see if we could find any information on where the dwarf was being held. They were also raiding the area and not letting people get to the town so it was a double whammy of saving the town and killing the goblin bandits.

Only, when we got there, it wasn't just goblins. There was an orc and an ogre as well. But before they stepped out, Venom Fang, the dragon we nicknamed Vinny, landed before the cave and acid breath'd them, gilling all the little goblins and leaving the big guys for us.

Sammy put up one hell of a fight against the ogre, let me tell you! The man was knocked up side the head with a club and stayed on his feet!!! You know how hard that is? I was rooting for him. But I was also trying to take out the ogre before he actually did enough damage to kill Sammy.

We had a rough moment of it, but we managed to kill them both in the end, and found the missing shipments of food and things that the townsfolk needed. We took the gold we found in the cave and gave it to Vinny before heading back to the town and letting them know what we had found. They gave us the stuff to go back and retrieve the supplies that were left, and we made it back in a couple of days with no incidents.

Only, when we arrived back in town, Vinny decided to come with us. He wanted more tribute (those damned worms again). Instead, Jemima made him fish (my favorite!!!!) and he ate with gusto. It was then we needed to bring the village people to our side and accept the dragon. We told them of how Vinny had helped us (he really hated his nickname), and said that with the right amount of praise and food, Vinny could become their local protection plan against bandits.

They were a little hesitant on this plan but they are warming up to it.

He flew off for the time being, saying he would be back on the morrow wanting more fish. (I don't blame him, they tasted AMAZING. Jemima outdoes herself every time!!!!)

Then the Duke showed up with his son and everything became a little uneasy. The person we were told was the mayor was just some rich guy who got the popular vote, so he was instated with the real powers of the mayor and all the problems that came with it (like reporting to the Duke what was going on in town even if it was bad news.) And the Duke took a liking to Jemima's cooking and had her eat with them at the table while Yasuke and I were stuck doing dishes. We all hated it.

When the time came to do our final little quest, we took Vinny with us to the house on top the hill where Vinny killed a mind reading blob in the bottom of a pit by vomiting acid onto it. Then I found a room of alchemy and strange things. So we went into the next room and found a sorcerer who I promptly charged as he cast black tentacles to come up from the ground to try and grapple us, but I was too fast. Yasuke and I were the only two free of the tentacles and we had the sorcerer defeated before they had a chance to react.

Once we cleared the house, we went back to the town for a good night's rest and to heal ourselves.

There was something still tugging on the back of my mind though. Where was the goblin castle and where was our dwarf? Was he already food for the goblins or would we have time to save him?

We would soon find out.

I either don’t like you too much or you’re forced as an ‘option’

I’M SORRY EVERYONE, I JUST DON’T LIKE LLOYD. I don’t even have a good reason. 

That said, I don’t really hate any of the dude characters. Calvin’s down here because I vaguely remember him being sexist, though it’s more interesting to me that a glitch stops you from marrying him in Tree of Tranquillity at all. Pete/Jack on the other hand is the only marriage option for the gameboy colour game, and I’m not to thrilled about that, but I don’t dislike him or anything.

No personal interest

Sorry fellas, you’re just not my type? After playing more of SoS I think I’d put Raeger higher since he’s kinda funny, but I wouldn’t date him. 

Unique?

A cut above ‘no personal interest’ because I have a bit more respect for ‘em. This varies, though, so I’ll run through:

Bob has a body type you don’t usually see in candidates. Angelo does art. Julian is rather feminine and I think that’s neat. Gustafa is weird but, like the other Forget-Me-Not candidates, he breaks the mould. Dan is...well he’s got a gambling problem but this negative aspect makes him stand out. Klaus is a modern older-bachelor type that actually looks older. His first event is strange, though. Skye was added so people would have eye candy for DS Cute and, while he annoys me, I still respect his inclusion and army of fangirls. Mikhail ... has a violin? Idk. His design intrigues me. I haven’t actually met him yet!

Mason is REALLY interesting, but he doesn’t have a face and ends the game so he’s pretty low. 

Harvest King is also a fantastic inclusion to AP in my opinion, but if I were putting in that much effort, I think I’d rather woo the Goddess. 

Oh You Know

A lot of these dudes are fandom-hated or mean in general. But I like them for that reason. I don’t think Brandon or Allen or Kappa are nice, but I LOVE poking fun at them, so I appreciate their existence as a result. This is essentially the ‘Would Date For the Lolz’ tier. 

I know Jamie is a lot higher on my ladies list, but consider that the extent of my divided opinion!

I like you but not THAT much

I suppose this is similar to the ‘friends’ tier on the ladies’ list. I’m not too interested in marrying them, but I’d be inclined to raise their friendship some.

I should marry them...

Fellas I’ve considered dating but it’d take time and effort that I don’t have. They weren’t top priority on my first playthrough. Lots of interesting routes, though!

Why did I marry them...?

A confusing tier to be in. I never got around to marrying Dirk, but I’ve married both Carter and Rod. Rod is really sweet and nice, I just... hate his clothes, and personality-wise I prefer a few of the other candidates. I’m really sorry Rod, you deserved better. 

Carter is, uh. The oldest man of oldest men, and deluded to boot. I mostly married him to get a specific child sprite. He has a really funny blushing face, though, and I’m going to use that to validate my decision. 

With Dirk, it’s simply a change in taste. He looks pretty young in Bazaar, and I was young when I was interested in him. But nowadays I’d rather marry ...

Ivan

... Ivan. He gets a special tier because I liked his name so much that I named my mascot OC after him. I’ve never really fancied him, per se, but I think he’s well dressed and is my top choice for GB. 

Married ‘em or was going to

My various husbands. I’m not as certain about Hiro anymore, but the last time I played ToTT I was pursuing him. Mistel has dropped a few tiers since I first made this, I’d rather date Elise. Like his sister, Mistel is written quite poorly, and he doesn’t even like birds! It’s hard for me to trust people that don’t like birds...

Ludus was my replacement for marrying Inari after finding out I can’t have kids, and...he’s pretty nice! I respect him and his hardworking nature. I’m not as crazy about him as I am about Doctor, though, who I’ve married a few times.

Soseki is ... unusual. I’ve come to love him, despite how much I hate his ‘ohh nooo I’m so old’ shtick. C’mon dude, you’re only pushing 30. He’s got a rather mysterious backstory and his trust issues are explored in his heart dialogue. I think he has a lot of potential, so I married him, and I still ship him with my MC, Duck!

WE HAVE HISTORY

My all-time favourites. 

Pierre is one I’m not super interested in anymore, his face is baby, but I hardcore crushed on him when I was 13, so I still have a lot of respect for his character. I like seeing Gourmet family lore, and he makes a lot of funny faces, as well as having a personality centring around the culinary arts. I like food.

Carl has a whole entire tragic backstory attached to him, but long story short, you can only play as a boy in the EU version of Magical Melody. I really wanted to marry him bad, but had to marry Kate instead. Nowadays I have means of playing the USA version and I was finally able to marry him. I think he’s great. A polite fellow with a big dream.

Gill is just really good, probably my top favourite. He comes off as cold and aloof, but as the son of the mayor he cares deeply about the town(s) he lives in, and in turn warms to the farmer because of their work ethic. He might be distant at first, but not in the same way that Vaughn and Neil are. I’m just a bit soft for his character type, that’s all.

*Spotify has always been there for you somehow, whether to ignore any and all social interaction or to sleep well, the green circle with black lines similar to fish gills has always been there for you. It’s another day during study hall and the teacher let you listen to your music, so readily you pull up Spotify but a few seconds after you start playing your favorite band you start to notice static filling your earbuds, soon followed by a quiet voice*

Ryan Seaman: hello listeners, ah-it’s me. Er, I mean my name is Ryan Seaman and tonight I’ll be starting off the show while Dallon takes care of things elsewhere. It’s been two weeks since my last show, sorry about that by the way I um…nevermind it’s not that important. Dallon will be joining us later, possibly around the news segments or maybe in a few moments even. 

I’ll just get started with the weather now. Everything’s been sunny as of late, which is pretty good I guess but the low…floating? Clouds are making traffic a pain in the a-a pain. The miniature rain storms and tornadoes inside the cars is also becoming an issue but weather officials notified us that this will pass eventually when fall comes, kind of a reliever to me because I feel bad whenever I borrow Dallon’s jackets. A few people have permanent rainbow paint jobs now and-oh hang on….ok, the city just informed me the car wash has finally managed to find a soap that will remove the rainbow stains. 

*the radio goes silent for a few moments, there’s no static and strangely enough it seems as though everyone in the classroom has frozen and…are they listening to the same radio station as you? It’s possible*

Dallon Weekes: hello everyone! I’m back, sorry about that had to take care of some things. I was listening in though and Ryan did a great job! Today will be short I’m afraid, my higher ups are still trying to figure out where to place Ryan since it seems most of the new lot where homes were being built has been swallowed up again by another sinkhole. 

Ryan Seaman: Dallon I don’t think sinkholes close back up 

Dallon Weekes: that’s what they want you to think Ryan. Now then let’s see what’s been going on in town …well the school will be having their dance soon, and it seems that one of the gardeners found a child hanging out in the garden yesterday and has since told everyone that he is a humanoid lemon boy. No one needs to worry though, the gardener has adopted him as his own. 

I hope everyone remembers that while the dance is going on the mayor would like it if no one was out in the streets or graffitiing. We don’t appreciate all the sigils being drawn and the spirits are trying to sleep, would you like it if someone rudely pulled you out of your room? No, you wouldn’t. 

Now our main segment is about Alice! 

*there’s silence, kind of awkward, and someone in the classroom actually coughs*

Dallon Weekes: Ryan? 

Ryan Seaman: oh! uh-I didn’t know I was gonna do the segment today, sorry

Dallon Weekes: it’s alright

*papers are being shuffled around and there is muffled voices*

Ryan Seaman: so on to the matter of Alice. Last year a house no one had ever seen seemed to appear from thin air on the outskirts of town, a large 3 story home and a sort of dark faerie tale look to it. No one seemed to leave it but no one seemed to enter it yet there was always lights coming from it and even a garden in the back that didn’t seem to ever die, even in the winter. A few reports started coming up about a giant white furred creature, kids started drawing huge white rabbits and giving them to their teachers. 

There was a town meeting called and that was when a rather eccentric looking gentleman walked in, went up to the stage, and explained the creature was his pet rabbit and her name was Alice. Alice was harmless and though she was larger than a bear she only wanted to play and occasionally visit the school children. Since then, Alice has been spotted occasionally and will even take some of the kids home if their parents can’t make it. 

Yesterday though the janitors at Cain elementary school called the town to inform them that there was a fluffle of about 24 rabbits sitting in the art room. School is shut down for the day while they attempt to round them all up and the mysterious eccentric man is nowhere to be found, even the house has disappeared-

Dallon Weekes: sink hole probably

Ryan Seaman:….ok. Anyway, authorities are attempting to locate the missing man to see if anything has happened to him and to see where Alice has gone-

Dallon Weekes: they were probably in the house when the sinkhole spat them out wherever they are now-

Ryan Seaman: that’s not how sinkholes work, Dallon! They’re not some kind of portal to hell or whatever, hell isn’t even real and if anything the rabbit probably just gave birth or something over the weekend-

*loud static pops like fire crackers and suddenly the show is cut*

*you blink and find yourself staring down at an essay for history…already finished? When did you finish it, and what just happened? Looking up you notice several other confused faces but the teacher announcing that the phones have to be put away sets off a chain of grumbling and whining. Either way, you put your phone back in your pocket…and for an unknown reason find yourself staring at a radio laying down by the trash can at the door. When did that get there? And why was it broken? Shaking your head, you decided to just draw aimless doodles until it was time to head home*

Dinner || Nori & Gill

Something was off.

Never does his father spend this much of the morning busy on the phone. This just wasn’t like him. Usually he makes some excuse, one or the other, to escape from any type of encounter. But today was different. He had been on his phone, locked in his office, for at least a half an hour (very unusual of him).

Gill sat at his desk in the front office of town hall with a novel in hand, it was a classic he’s read over and over yet still found pleasure in reading over once again. Though the whole strangity of the situation was pulling his attention away from the words on the page. Ice colored eyes casted off to the side, focusing in on trying to hear and bits of the conversation he could hear from the other room. Luckily his father had quite the loud and exuberant vocals. 

Though despite his attempt, he could make out no actual sentences. With a deep exhale at the fact that he would simply have to let go of his curiosity for the moment, his gaze glanced at the clock. 4:49pm. Just eleven minutes left before town hall closed up for the day. Better start his end of the evening paperwork.

Although, as soon as he marked his page and closed his book, the door to his father’s office bursted open dramatically. Gill, more than used to his antics, was not jarred from the loud sound of the door slamming.

“Gill! There you are my good boy!” His plucky father moved out of his office to approach his son. “And you’re looking great today, Luna and Candace sure did a fine job on that suit of yours!”

The blond, with an exhausted sigh, replied. “Of course father, where else would I be? We’re still open, and with you chattering away in there it’s not like I had much choice to go anywhere.” His attention turned to the final paperwork for the day that needed the be filled out, with a click of his pen he began. “Why does it matter how I’m dressed?”

“Well you see, remember last week when I went to that pai gow competition at that teahouse in Konohana last week?” How could he forget, another one of his father’s endeavors to have some sort of hobby. The week before that it was bingo. Needless to say, he lost miserably. Gill scoffed in response, to which the mayor continued on nonetheless. “Well I met this fine older gentleman, who was quite good at the game, and Gill I really think he can help us with the little conundrum we’re in! He runs a vast vegetable farm in that little town and I think he can help us quite a bit!”

Ah, that conundrum. Recently, because of the size the Castanet has grown to in the past couple years, the local farmers simply can’t keep up with the demand for fruit and vegetables. It certainly didn’t help that two of the main farmers in their little city only worked with wine, and not so much consumer produce. So they’d been looking into outsourcing. Gill’s nose crinkled in dissatisfaction at the idea, his pen scribbling a bit faster through the documents. “Don’t you find it unwise to simply jump into business with someone that you met over a domino competition? How do you know if he can even supply the amount we’re looking for?”

A hearty laugh escaped Hamilton at his son’s scepticism. “Goodness boy! Business minded as always, he was the fellow I was actually talking with just now on the phone! He couldn’t use it too well, apparently his granddaughter had to set up the call for him, but we actually planned a meeting to discuss more details. For this evening actually!” The man paused, realizing a point, and perking up once again. “Speaking of which Gilbert, I’m going to need you to entertain his granddaughter while the two of us talk.”

Gill’s pen halted. He blinked. “I have to what?” 

Another easy going laugh came from the older man. “Oh don’t be like that son! Gombe says she’s just lovely! I’m sure you’ll have a great time with her! They’re just coming over for dinner tonight and then the two of you can chat while we both chat!”

Gill gripped the pen in frustration while he tried every attempt to stay calm at the news. The image of some bouncing off the walls child came to his mind, and of course his father would set him up for babysitting. “Father,” the boy spoke through gritted teeth. “I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t want me there for the business discussions, I already wrote up the budget and did have the analysis on the level of produce we’re looking to outsource.” 

“And you will be there for the discussion! Over dinner! But after dinner Gombe is going to show me a thing or two in pai gow, help me be able to hold my own the next time they have a meeting!” With a happy, almost proud of him look on his face, the man continued as he began walking out of the room. “Speaking of dinner, would you mind heading to the restaurant and chatting with Yolanda about putting something together? Great, thanks son!” And he was gone.

Gill was livid. This has happened before. Countless times. Where his father simply just doesn’t let him help, despite doing all the research for this project. He’s always just treated like a useless assistant. Time and time again. 

He slammed his pen on the table in frustration, his mind calculating just how he was now going to get through the evening. 

This was going to be a long night.

INVOLVED → a client, her son, a “businessman” TIME FRAME → over the course of a few weeks in mid 2014 LOCATION → El Paso, Texas SUMMARY → A little threat, a little crime, a little wreck, a little deed. Something better forgotten and never to be confessed. lmao it’s 2236 words

I DIDN’T MEAN FOR THIS SHIT TO GET SO LONG. 

TL;DR maribel could be sued for law malpractice, perhaps even something criminal. after a crime boss requests the deportation of someone who witnessed a murder, maribel tries to keep her integrity together until her son is put in harm’s way. her mother instincts flare up, risking her professional reputation, she sends an innocent boy home. all in the name of motherly love and keeping your job, i guess. 

SCENE → 9AM. Dream Defenders HQ.

Maribel always approved each case that came in before it could be taken up. While it was easy to try accepting them all, she took it upon herself to vet and examine each for potential. Like every morning before, Maribel was at her desk reading through a mountain of files and summaries prepared by her employees. As the woman in charge, her own desk wasn't grand but it was separated from everyone else. She could have the privilege of privacy and quiet, but the taps of productivity were still heard. Hearing people work made her feel secure. 

Her secretary knocked and opened the door. "Ms. Vela, Mr. Santos is here for his appointment." Maribel froze, the page she was turning slipped from her finger and slowly landed. She peered over her reading glasses. "Gilbert Santos?" She knew the name.  The secretary nodded and spoke before Maribel could respond further. "I'll send him in." 

Uh, Maribel didn’t confirm that he could enter. 

His footsteps made Maribel uncomfortable, loud and obnoxious. She could only dread as to how he would talk like. He wasn't a large man, a willowy figure who couldn’t have been taller than 5′8″ but his presence took up so much space — not counting that strong waft of cologne. It made Maribel want to puke because it smelt like rotten bergamot orange. Mr. Santos put his jacket where Maribel had hung her scarf. He made himself comfortable in the seat before her desk, settling until he was still as a stone. Maribel's disposition mirrored him, yet her head pounded intensely. He leaned forward with his hands holding the chair's sides. "You're the one defending Skinner Martinez, aren't you?"

How did he know? Maribel broke their gaze, by shutting her open file and tidying the space immediately in front of her. "We're handling Ernesto Martinez's asylum claim, yes." She paused, looking back at him and raising her voice. "I can't discuss this with you. I can confirm that he's my client but whatever you’re here for, this is the most I can reveal." She sighed before standing up, walking around her table towards the door. “I’m sorry, I’m not sure why you’re here. I don’t need your likes around here so you can just head on—” Her babbling was interrupted by a thump. She turned around to see a thick envelope on her desk. Santos had sly smile. 

“Open it,” he said, before throatily chuckling. His voice was raw yet suspiciously smooth. “You’re looking at it like it’s your dead cat.” 

The two held each other’s stares once again. Oddly enough, both had ancestors dating back to Spanish Texas. They were channeling the intensity of two gun-wielding duellers. Maribel could never foresee the lawlessness of the Wild West manifested in her sleek modern office. Here she was, like the Vela forebears who defended their property against bandits like Santos. 

“If you’d stoop as low to give me ca–”  “Open it,” Santos growled. She wanted to get rid of him, but she felt reduced. It disgusted her. Maribel obeyed, if that’s what it took to rid him. She ripped the envelope open, expecting to feel dollar bills but she froze as her fingers touched glossy paper. Photographs. She took each one out, laying them in front of her. 

There was her fourteen year old son at the mall with his friends.  There was her husband on his morning jog in the park, alone.  Another shot of both having conversation outside a Starbucks. 

Gilbert knew who her family was and where they were. She couldn’t even think of how these shots had been taken: they were close distance, not far away. Their subject — her loved ones — didn’t notice anything. 

Maribel was too scared to look in Santos’ direction. She heard his voice, as he narrated each image. “Ms. Vela, you’re a smart gringa.” She raised her eyebrow. That was uncalled for. Before he could continue, Maribel mouthed under her breath. Hijo de puta. “And very direct too. Listen carefully. I want Martinez out of here. He’s trouble.” 

Son of a bitch. It was stuck in her throat. He had choked her without laying a single finger. Gilbert Santos grabbed his jacket and left. Maribel’s hands curled into fists that didn’t let go for a while. 

SCENE → 12PM. Dream Defenders HQ.

“Hey, Maribel, my lunch break might be a bit longer today. Justin and I want to try the new place around the corner.” Her secretary had most of his body hidden behind the door as he nonchalantly reported his tactical retreat. Maribel wanted to snarl. He couldn’t avoid her. 

“Rob, don’t go just yet.” The young man tensed up. “You better give me an explanation of this morning’s guest because what happened today was absolutely inexcusable.” Gilbert Santos did not have an appointment and the encounter had thrown off her focus for the rest of the day. 

Rob finally exhaled. Please breathe. Instead, he panicked. “It’s difficult to say no to a man like that. Ask anyone out there, he bust right in like he owned the place. He probably does. They call him–” 

“I know his street name, something like tiburón, shark. And his name is Gil, like gills on a shark. He’s a loan shark.” The concept was cringeworthy if it wasn’t so terrifying. “You think I don’t know this? You think I want an actual dangerous criminal under my roof?” She didn’t mean to push her frustration on the secretary. After all, she was becoming undone just like Santos probably intended. But it made her so angry, that someone like him could penetrate her organisation and just barge in like that, demand something from an honest non-profit like that. She huffed. “Why do you think he was asking about Martinez?” 

As much community engagement Maribel did, she could never be truly a part of who she served. Her staff were mostly locals, perhaps people she’d helped in the past. They knew the status of migrants better than she did, by their sheer experience. Rob was one of them. 

“He’s such a leech. My parents couldn’t get a loan for their store so uh, he approached them. God, he has ears everywhere. How could he know? Anyway, like so many others, my parents were victims to his crazy interest until—” 

Maribel interrupted her employee again. “But Ernesto doesn’t have any debt. Santos would have nothing on him.” That was certain. They worked for free but Ernesto “Skinner” Martinez had pride and savings, insisting on paying. 

“Maribel, Ernesto’s sister was shot in San Antonio last week!” Maribel put her hand up and narrowed her eyes. What? She wasn’t being rude. She had been consoling her client when he came in bawling. It was just an exclamation to her, not an explanation from Rob. He was displaying severe nervousness and struggled to further explain. “I know he came in all lamenting and shit. Okay, I heard from some people that he was there when it happened. He didn’t want to tell us because he thought it would, uh, jeopardise or ruin his application.” 

That didn’t make any sense. But obviously that’s why services like Maribel’s were needed with all this misinformation. Maribel dismissed Rob for his lunch. She flopped in her desk chair. Fuck. That’s when it started to sink in. Why couldn’t this just hit her like a wave, swift and done with? The implications of everything just collapsed on her instead, slowly burying into her conscience.

She opened the door of her private space and looked out at her team, some were still working. These were the people building her empire. When Gilbert took a shot at her heritage, he wasn’t wrong. She wasn’t a full, indigenous, Mexican. Her mother was Catholic but still European: Irish mother and peninsular father. Maribel’s father, like most Mexicans, was mestizo but that didn’t mean their family could recall their culture. As much as Maribel would’ve loved to claim one. There was a time when teenage Maribel adored civilisation. Ever the aspiring Classics major, studied Greek myths philosophy and quoted Latin phrases for fun. She decolonised her mind soon enough. The wonders and legacy of the Aztec was a civilisation. She had the blood of its empire regrettably, alongside the Spanish colonisers but still, only an Aztec descendant could have the passion and drive she had. This NGO’s office? This organisation was her own Templo Mayor. She was Mexican, no matter what that puta insisted. Gilbert Santos had the gall to cherrypick her ethnicity but was willing to con and deport a fellow Latino. This was chaos, not civilisation. 

SCENE → 2AM. Maribel’s suburban home. 

Maribel slammed her car door shut. Her son followed. She took out her mobile and dialled. “Rob, get here now. My house.” The lights were still on when they entered. Maribel’s husband (her second one) was watching a late night talk show. 

“What happened? What did the kid do?” Maribel’s son widened his eyes as if the man had insulted her mother. He really didn’t. He was there when Maribel received a call about her son being at the police station.  “I did nothing. We got jumped,” her son snapped. “Who the fuck holds some teens at gunpoint?” Getting robbed in central El Paso. That wasn’t right. Maribel’s husband sat up straight from his slouch, apologised and offered some comforting, if useless, words and reprimanded him about his language. 

Maribel had bells inside her head ringing. When they sent her down to the station, she had to be there while they questioned him. Lucky kid, with an attorney as a mother. As he recounted the incident, she picked up on some features of the crime. They were familiar. Her son was privileged and surrounded by enough affluence to not know it. But, anyone within Gilbert Santo’s vicinity would recognise it all immediately. She couldn’t believe it. The son of bitch would target a fourteen year old, one exiting the movie theatre in a decent neighbourhood with his friends. Santos was beneath sub-human. 

“Why would you even go into town that late?” Maribel had put her stuff on the kitchen counter. Her son was pouring himself some juice. He almost over-poured with Maribel’s piercing interrogation. She was a chill parent, not one that yelled. Maribel wasn’t even angry when she found the bong in his room.  “Why are you and him both riding my dick like this?” He shouted, before storming off with his juice. She wasn’t going to bother confronting him. She couldn’t blame him for being on edge, close to death even. 

Maribel’s second husband walked past him. He found Maribel teary-eyed and hunched over as both hands pressed on the counter. Her hair was all over the place. She had a wild look in her eye. At the same time, he knew her well enough to know that cogs were spinning inside that mind. She was overthinking, running out batteries like the machine she was. He started to rub her shoulders. “Not now. Work is bad too.” Maribel said immediately. Come on. Relax. He was in his pyjamas yet Maribel didn’t even change out her work clothes. The heels could’ve slain her by now. He stroked her hair, her neck, moved his hands down to her hips before wrapping them around her.  “Human warmth works in times of distress.” Cute, but they weren’t penguins. Albeit she could have let loose, let her own damn husband love her, care for her but, no...

That was the moment Rob stormed in, having rushed over since the phone call. “Your son let me in, he doesn’t seem too–” Oh. As he saw the intimacy of his boss and her husband. “Should I wait outside?” Maribel slipped out of the embrace, flustered. She kissed her husband good night and sent him off, leaving her and Rob in the kitchen. They were both visibly uncomfortable. 

“He’s done it. You know what this means,” Maribel spoke, once she knew she heard her husband go upstairs. Rob nodded, already opening files on his tablet computer. “Martinez has a solid case for asylum, Maribel, torture claimant and all. You want us to get rid of all that? Send him back?”

“Or you want us Ernesto to die for being a witness, Rob?” 

Gilbert had made it very clear. It was Ernesto Martinez or her son. 

SCENE → 2PM. USCIS Building.

She met Ernesto outside. He said that ICE were hanging round his neighbourhood. He couldn’t wait until they didn’t scare him anymore. He entered illegally, but that didn’t mean he was a bad person. The USCIS would take a while to respond to his claim, but if all they did what they usually did, they were unlikely to accept it. 

Rob and Maribel had done their best, that is, done their best to be bad at their job. They didn’t give enough details to advocate, only enough to fill the blanks. Ernesto would never know. Ernesto trusted his existence in her organisation. They knew what the officials wanted to hear on their forms. People knew that their efforts were never 100% guaranteed. But Maribel knew what she was doing, right? All they could do was wait for the system to hopefully work. 

She wished Ernesto luck and entered the building to meet another client. All she smelt was rotten orange bergamot.

6. Making Conversations

"How do you go back to being strangers with someone who has seen your soul?" — Nikita Gill.

 With Peeta home, breakfast actually became a practice instead of a meal that Katniss and Haymitch frequently skipped. For the first time since Haymitch brought Katniss home, her kitchen island was laden with breads, muffins and homemade jams.

"Can you pass the marmalade, please?" Effie requested.

At the sound of her voice, Haymitch glanced up and realised that the question was directed at him. His hand was full holding a cup of coffee and a teaspoon in the other so he popped the teaspoon in his mouth, leaned over to grab the jar and handed it to her.

As he pulled the spoon out of his mouth to continue stirring his coffee, Katniss shot him a disgusted look, not that he noticed because he was still staring at Effie.

She had been here nearly a week and throughout the time, she treated him with polite civility which was expected from any well-mannered, civilised person. He missed her warmth, their banter which more often than not turned flirty in seconds and their vicious arguments, granted an argument was the last thing he wanted right now. He thought it might be even better if she was outright cold with him. At least then, he would know where he stood.

"So, Haymitch, you'll be at the Town Square today?" Peeta asked.

He forced his gaze away from Effie to look at the Peeta. "Yeah, guess so. You?"

"Yes," he answered.

Peeta had found it helpful to immerse himself with the rebuilding as well, claiming it was a community effort and he would very much liked to play his part. The first two days after his return, he had gone straight to working on Katniss' garden, planting primroses and other flowers. Then he began to notice that there were days in which Haymitch was not around so he started following his mentor. Peeta often dropped by with a basket filled with muffins and pastries for the volunteers and workers, and then he would help where he was needed.

"We are laying bricks today," Peeta informed both Katniss and Effie. "Some of the houses in the old part of the Seam are up with very basic amenities but at least there is a roof over their heads. It is not going fast enough from what I heard but the district also need shops if we are going to go on living so we need the Town to be sorted within the week. That's the focus for today and the following days, isn't it, Haymitch?"

"Yeah," Haymitch answered simply.

"I heard there will be a vote to elect a mayor here..." Effie chimed in.

"Oh, yeah," Haymitch nodded. "Not sure when that'll be but should be soon."

"What about the rumour that instead of coal, our focused trade might now be medicine?" Peeta queried.

Haymitch shrugged.

"One thing at a time. First get the houses up then a place we can buy and sell and then we can focus on whatever else we need to boost the district's economy."

"Maybe you should be mayor," Katniss remarked. "You seem to have a good idea of what we need."

Haymitch chuckled and waved it off.

"Never crossed my mind. I'll leave that to someone younger and with more ambition. Besides, I have something else to occupy my time," Haymitch said.

“Really?” Katniss asked sceptically.

"Speaking of which, I might head off to see if I can salvage any old books at the library ground. Beetee and Plutarch are sending some over my way as well so I'll swing by the train station – be back in the evening."

“Old books?” Katniss frowned. “What for?”

“Something,” Haymitch said simply. “Got a plan – nothing concrete yet.”

Since Paylor had told him that his suggestion had merit and since no one had volunteered to take up the task with the avoxes, she was willing to let Haymitch helm the rehabilitation programme. This meant that he needed to put something together. He already had an idea of the direction he intended to take and among the first thing he realise he needed to tackle was to give the avoxes back their ability to communicate. That was where the books came in. Pollux and his brother must have learnt to sign from somewhere and by that logic, there must be books on it. While waiting for word from Pollux, he figured he should get a head start on that on his own.

“So…” Haymitch said, taking a bite off his muffin, “what are you up to today, sweetheart?”

Her gaze cut sharply to him. She seemed startled that his question was directed at her, as if the very idea that he would take interest in her plans was unheard of.

“I … I have nothing planned.”

“Yeah?” he raised an eyebrow. “You always have a plan or something.”

“I was thinking that if Sae wants my help with her… She is planning on opening a small restaurant and I thought I could help. Otherwise, I’ll think of something else.”

“Ah, alright,” Haymitch leaned back in his chair. “Don’t stay cooped up in that house all day long. It ain’t good.”

It was something he noticed. She spent more hours in than out, and when she actually ventured out, it was usually to take walks with Peeta in the evening or for meals at Katniss’ house. Apart from them, Sae and her granddaughter’s coming and going was the only other social contact she had.

Haymitch wasn’t sure how long her visit in Twelve was going to last or what her arrangement with Peeta was. He wasn’t sure if she was going to be here tomorrow or the week after. He wasn’t sure if he was going to wake up the next morning and find that she had left for District Four to visit Annie and Johanna. He wasn’t even sure if ‘visiting’ meant that she had left the Capitol for good, and if she did, then where would she stay?

The only thing Peeta had told him when he asked was that Effie was looking for a fresh start.

He supposed the only thing he could do was the take one day at time where Effie was concerned. Right now, she was here and that was all that mattered. He liked that Katniss, Peeta and Effie were all in the same place where he could keep an eye out for them. It would be perfect if Annie and Johanna were here too but that would be asking for too much.

He just wished… He just wished that she would talk to him, not this thing where he ask a question and she answer, and nothing else. If she was still angry, he would rather she screamed at him because right now, sitting here and sharing breakfast with her felt too much like having a meal with a stranger.

“Paylor’s swearing is in today,” Peeta reminded them. “We should all try to be back for dinner for that.”

“Dawn of a new era,” Haymitch remarked.

“Does this mean that the situation in the Capitol has stabilised enough for them to finally hold the inauguration? It’s been – what? – almost two months since she was elected…” Katniss mused.

“Even if the Capitol’s still in a mess, they need to hold it soon. There is a need to make it official to keep the stability in the country. Paylor’s head of the government now and the people need to see that.”

“Effie had a hand in choosing Paylor’s outfit,” Peeta broke the news, looking at Effie encouragingly as if to give her an opening for which she could talk.

“Oh, really?” Haymitch turned towards her.

“It is nothing too extravagant,” she said. “Plutarch merely summoned me to the Presidential Mansion to get my opinion on which outfit would be suitable. It took less than a day.”

“That’s good – it means your opinion matters,” Haymitch pointed out.

“Yes, I supposed.”

Haymitch let out a breath and exchanged a glance with Peeta who shook his head imperceptibly.

When did conversations with Effie become so difficult? It was easy before. They always knew what to say to each other. They also always knew which buttons to push to anger the other. She knew him like no one else did.

He knew he needed to stop grumbling. He needed to give her time. From where she was standing, he had all but betrayed her and if someone had betrayed him, he sure as hell wouldn’t be sitting on the same table as the said person to have breakfast together.

She needs time, he told himself.

What was important was that she was here. He would take this win.

Mayor Murphy Ch 8

It would be really amusing to me if Animal Crossing had their own version of those shows on HGTV with the home improvement and vacation home stuff. 

Ch 8- Home Sweet Home 

Milo rubbed his eyes, feeling the hardwood against his bare feet. The small bed was surprisingly comfortable, though he definitely preferred the height his loft bed at home gave him. 

Wait, hardwood?

“Hello, mayor!” a voice chimed. 

Milo yelped and fell back on his bed in surprise, banging his head against the wall with a hard thud. “Morning Isabelle. Ow,” he groaned, feeling a dull throb. 

“Oh my gosh! Mayor, are you all right?” Isabelle yelped, grabbing his head and checking for bruises. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! Digby is always telling me I need to stop waiting by animal’s beds for them to wake up because it’s creepy and I wasn’t being creepy, was I? Don’t call Copper on me! Please don’t!” 

“I don’t know who that is, but I promise I won’t tell him,” Milo said. “What are you doing here anyway?” 

Isabelle tentatively held out several wrapped presents. “I wanted to be the first to see your new home. And I brought you housewarming gifts!” 

Milo opened the first present, unwrapping a yellow wallpaper with pawprints covering every inch. “This is a really pretty wallpaper,” Milo said. 

“You really like it?” Isabelle blushed, her tail wagging. “I made it just for you!” 

Milo glanced at the small room, eyes flicking between the bright yellow wallpaper he held and the unsightly dull gray that currently covered the walls of the house. “Would you mind if I put this up now?” he asked. “The walls right now look kind of, um....” 

Isabelle squealed, then clapped a paw over her mouth in horror. “Sorry. I’m just really happy you like it so much. And yes, I agree. Your current wallpaper is much too depressing. Anyway, to change the wallpaper, just tap the wall with the one you’re holding.” 

Milo obeyed, and Isabelle’s wallpaper unfurled and spread through the house while the gray curled and folded in, finally dropping in a heap into Milo’s lap. “I wish redecorating was this easy at home,” he laughed. “One time we were painting the guest room and I wasn’t watching where I was going and I stepped in an entire can of orange paint. Then my dad got his entire arm stuck in a roll of blue tape.”

The second present was a special set of coffee from Brewster. “We don’t have the Roost yet in this town, but Digby knows Blathers who’s buddies with Brewster,” Isabelle explained. “Speaking of the Roost, I should put that on the list of public works projects. And onto the topic of public works project, we can now get somewhat started on your duties as mayor. However, before you can start improving the town, first of all you’ll need a 100% approval rating.” 

Milo nodded. “Okay, I can do that. I think....” 

“I know it seems like a lot, but the residents already like you. If you go around helping them today, you can get your rating up to 100% in no time! The good news is, you’re already at 35%, which is pretty good considering this is only your third day,” Isabelle cheerfully said. “Now, why don’t you unwrap that last present?” 

Milo held up a lantern, which he set up in a far corner. “Thanks for everything, Isabelle,” he said as they exited the house. He took the coffee set with him so he could share it with the others. 

“No problem, mayor,” Isabelle said. “I’m going to get back to Town Hall. You know. Paperwork as usual. Toodles!” 

There was a creaking noise underfoot, and Milo stepped off a slab of wood. Now he noticed the giant pile of scrap materials that a group of raccoons were clearing away. 

“Excuse me,” Milo said to a heavyset raccoon. “What’s going on?” 

The raccoon chewed the twig in his mouth before responding. “That darn house kept collapsing on us when we tried to remodel it! Told my cousin not to put newbies in charge of the roof, but would he listen to me? No, course not! Took until five this morning before the house actually looked like a house!” 

Milo examined the exterior of his new house, made of solid white brick. Tom Nook had delivered on the red roof, a chimney standing proudly in the back. There was a beep coming from the mailbox, and Milo pulled out two letters. The first was from Marshal, written on blue and white stationary.

Yo, Milo!

Thanks for a great time yesterday! Reminds me of firefly hunting with my siblings when I was little. My mom freaked when I swallowed one, but it made my mouth all tingly and glowy so I just kept stuffing my cheeks with them. Let’s continue being friends!

Cool as a cucumber, Marshal

There was a shirt attached to the letter. “A gelato tee?” Milo wondered. “Well, he’s got good taste!” He decided to put it on for the day, stuffing his normal sweatervest and shirt into his backpack. He reminded himself to thank Marshal later. 

He read the second letter on the way to the Plaza. There wasn’t a name attached, but whoever wrote it thought he’d do a good job as mayor and congratulated him. 

Sara was already at the Plaza, several pastries lying on a plate next to her. Milo set the coffee down, sitting on the cobblestone and biting into a large peach. “Where’d the coffee come from?” Sara asked. 

“Isabelle. She was in my house when I woke up,” Milo explained. “I’m not really sure how they built a house around me. I didn’t even wake up once.”

“I wonder how many times it collapsed,” she said casually, taking a bite of her toast. 

“There was a large pile of debris outside my house that the construction crew was hauling away,” Milo said. “So probably a few. Where are Zack and Melissa?” 

Sara pointed to Main Street. “Melissa’s visiting Lottie in Central. I think Zack is donating a few things things to the Museum right now. I don’t have anything planned for today though, so I can help you do whatever you need to do.” 

Milo grinned. “That’s perfect! Isabelle says I need to raise my approval rating so I can actually do stuff as mayor. I’m thinking I should go around and help the villagers today.” 

“Well, I definitely approve of my little brother,” Sara gave a thumbs up. “Melissa and Zack too. You seem like great pals with Marshal already, but I don’t think you know the other animals too well.” 

“Then it’s time to fix that!” Milo exclaimed. 

“Gronk! Get off me! You two are scraping away my scales!” Del snarled. Zack and the museum curator, Blathers, were currently using Del as a gator jungle gym so they could get away from the horrible monstrosities that laid before them.

That is, if one considered ladybugs and sweetfish horrible monstrosities. 

“I think it’s staring at me!” Zack shrieked. 

“Hoo-hoo! Ladybugs can emit powerful chemicals if threatened,” Blathers fearfully clung to Del’s jaw, trembling. “Are we threatening right now? I’ll have that smell on my wings for weeks!”

Del stumbled around for a few seconds before tripping over his tail, landing on his back painfully. Zack extracted himself from Del’s stomach, carefully prying Blathers’ wings from Del’s jaw. 

“Both of you put those creatures into the proper exhibit. If you’ll excuse me, I have a flower garden to attend to.” With that, Del stood up, shaking his head and muttering curses. The door slammed behind him, causing a little plaster to rain down from the ceiling.

“Hoo!” Blathers hooted. “He’s something all right. And you room with that guy?”

Zack shrugged. “He was willing to show me his electric guitar collection. Moving on, we should really get these to the exhibits. I don’t mind taking the ladybug if you’ll handle the sweetfish. I can’t wait to get that dead-eyed stare off me.” 

Zack approached the ladybug’s container carefully, picking it up at arm’s length so he didn’t get too close to the sweetfish. The ladybug inside rested on a leaf placidly, not moving when the container was slightly jostled. Blathers grabbed the small tank that held the sweetfish and left for the fish and sea creature exhibit.

The only sound from the bug exhibit was the tapping of Zack’s shoes. There were all sorts of plants, from cedars, fruit trees, and flowers, but he didn’t hear anything that sounded remotely like an insect. Zack normally disliked too much noise, but now there was too little of it. It creeped him out. 

In the next room over, Zack found a post that marked the ladybug’s habitat, but there was no other text that gave more information about the insect. “Bye, bye, little ladybug,” Zack said as it flew out and landed on a white rose. 

“Doesn’t the museum seem a little empty?” Zack asked Blathers once he returned, his feathers slightly wet. 

“Yes, well, seeing as Fortuna is a new town, it can’t be helped,” Blathers sighed. “It’s my dream to see every exhibit filled up, though that could take a long time, with the scarcity of some of these creatures. Anyhoo, you did a great job handling that ladybug. If it wouldn’t be so much trouble, perhaps you could stop by every now and then to help with the bugs? I’m afraid of creepy-crawlies, you see....” 

Zack nodded. “I’ll be sure to tell everyone that they should try to donate their catches. Also, I don’t mind the bugs if you’ll take care of the fish. At least bugs don’t have gaping mouths and gills.” 

“So what’s on the to-do list?” Milo asked. 

Sara glanced at the checklist. “Deliver a package to Diana that was given to Cesar by in a post office mix-up, find furniture for Coco, and catch a zebra turkeyfish for Del.” 

“A zebra turkeyfish? Those exist? What kind of animal is that anyway?” Milo said. 

“The lovechild of a striped equine, Thanksgiving dinner, and a scaly marine creature,” Sara suggested, wiggling her fingers. “Legends say it comes after those who dare to laugh at its name.” 

Milo laughed, his voice an octave lower. “You’re mocking the ancestral name of the zebra turkeyfish, Sara Murphy. You will be eliminated by the the kraken.” 

Sara ruffled his hair. “I don’t think being a demonic zebra turkeyfish will do wonders for your approval rating.” 

After messing around, they found Diana relaxing on a hammock by her house. A pair of sunglasses was over her eyes, her polished hooves holding up a screen. She hummed contentedly, her legs crossed in relaxation. 

“Hey, Diana!” Milo greeted, tripping over a stool next to the hammock. He threw out an arm to catch himself, his hand accidentally catching on the hook that attached the hammock to the tree trunk. 

Diana let out a not so ladylike scream as the hammock flipped over and sent her crashing to the grass below. The screen landed on her head, covering her eyes. Milo quickly helped her up. “Sorry, didn’t mean for that to happen. Are you alright?” 

“Yes, I am quite fine,” Diana said coolly, her gaze flicking over to Sara. “Both of you shall mention this incident to nobody. I have an image to maintain. And in return I shall gladly accept your apology.” 

“We have a package for you,” Sara said. Milo handed Diana a letter, attached to a small box. “It was delivered to Cesar by mistake. I had to put it in my pouch for safekeeping because he kept going on about how ‘anything Diana orders will ruin my mustache’. Then he attempted to Cesar Crash it and managed to break the couch.”

“That fool,” Diana sighed. “I must have a word with him later. I insist that I repay with you with this alpine dresser. Please accept it.” 

She handed him a leaf, then started rolling up the hammock. 

“Now we help Coco find some furniture,” Sara said. “Um, any ideas of what that rabbit is into?” 

“We heard about your roomie program, and we’re like, so totally interested!” a white cat exclaimed as Melissa walked through the door of Nook’s Homes. “But the other towns are destroying our vibe, like, I don’t go anywhere without Kiki, mweee!” She clung to her companion, a black cat who shuffled nervously.

Kiki opened her mouth to say something, but Lottie cut her off. “Then I think I know the town just for you! The mayor is fresh off the train, he needs all the help he can get to develop Fortuna! And oh, you’re timing is perfect, Melissa!” Before Melissa could say anything, Lottie wrapped an arm around her shoulders with a wide grin. “This is Melissa! She’s a friend of the current mayor of Fortuna! Melissa, I’d like you to meet Merry and Kiki!”

Melissa awkwardly waved. “Hi.” Everyone covered their ears at Merry’s loud squeal. 

“O.M.G. You know the mayor of your town?” Merry suddenly started to inspect her closely. “I can totally believe that. Like, look at the stitching of her jacket. This is Gracie style quality. What do you think, Kiki?”

Kiki shifted from paw to paw, nervously wringing her paws. “Does your town have tuna in it?” she asked. 

“I don’t know about tuna, but there’s plenty of other fish in the sea,” Melissa replied. “Though my friend Zack is afraid of them.”

“Why? Fish are adorable!” Kiki’s eyes widened. 

Melissa could think of a few species of fish that she would never consider adorable, but didn’t say that aloud. “He has a lot of phobias.”

“Like, if you’re okay with Fortuna then I’m okay with it too!” Merry exclaimed. “And the best part is, we know Melissa who knows the mayor and that makes us celebrities by association!”

“Well then, in that case, let’s get to work on your house!” Lottie struck a pose as Merry cheered and hugged Kiki. “You wanna help us out here, Melissa?”

“All those interior design shows my dad likes to watch have prepared me for this moment,” Melissa said.

The bonfires cast an eerie glow on the already creepy moving statues. Milo poked one out of curiosity, then jumped back as it emitted a long, mournful howl. 

“The Howloids are my favorites,” Coco said. “I want to be surrounded by Gyroids. They make the most beautiful sounds. Besides, I can’t sleep without them.”

Sara stayed by the door so she couldn’t see those gaping black eyes watching her every move. “Yeah, I bet these things have some pretty good lullabies.” 

“Anyway, do you think you two could go find another for me?” Coco asked. “I’d go with you, but my room needs a little rearranging.” 

“Sure!” Milo exclaimed, taking care to not get too close to the flames that were a little too large for his liking. “As my dad always says, when a rabbit asks you to do a favor for them, don’t refuse or they’ll move into your basement!” 

“You can usually find them buried in the ground,” Coco supplied as they exited the house. “Happy digging, doyoing!” 

Sara pulled a shovel out of her pouch. “Good thing I bought this. Timmy said to look for star-shaped patterns on the ground to dig up.” 

“Like this one?” Milo pointed to one in the shade of a tree, then stepped on it out of curiosity. The ground immediately collapsed, leaving Milo stuck up to his waist in a hole. 

Sara promptly dropped her shovel and pulled Milo out. “Let’s avoid stepping on them in the future,” she suggested. 

“Mweee, Fortuna is so amazing!” Merry exclaimed. “And I love that we’re near a bridge! This is going to be inspirational for my sketching, I can tell!” 

The two cats had decided they wanted to be near a river, so Melissa and Lottie led them back to Fortuna. Once they’d scouted out a location, Lottie handed Melissa a small electronic device. “That’s a portable catalog,” Lottie explained. “It makes things a lot easier so we don’t have to deal with the hassle of moving in by hand. Maybe you could give it a go?” 

“Um, sure?” Melissa slid a stylus out of a side hole and tapped it, and a screen with several notes that Lottie had taken earlier popped up. “So an artsy room to sketch for Merry, and an aquarium for Kiki?” 

“I couldn’t leave Finn behind,” Kiki mumbled. “He’d be lonely without me.” 

Melissa raised an eyebrow. “Who’s Finn?” 

“Her goldfish!” Merry exclaimed. “He’s not a good subject. At all. Keeps trying to hide every time I try to draw him. Humph!” 

“Residents have a few keepsakes when they move,” Lottie explained. “You’ll have to include them while designing a room. Now, we’ll begin with the exterior. Let the magic happen!” 

“I know you’ll pick something so us, Melissa!” Merry cheered. Kiki simply gave a thumbs up. 

“It’s your house. You sure you don’t want to choose?” Melissa asked. 

They shook their heads, so Melissa decided to go with the simple medium house. She tapped the option with the stylus, and a house immediately sprung into existence. She blinked in surprise. “Okay, that’s cool. So if you guys can build a house like this, which wouldn’t even take an hour, what was with the construction crew at Milo’s this morning?”

“Oh, we always manually build the mayor’s home,” Lottie waved a paw dismissively. “Other than the Plaza, the mayor’s home should always be representative of the town! The process we’re going through right now makes it easier on the animals. This way, they’ll be ship-shape for town life straight away!”

Melissa picked out the gray brick roof and white chalet exterior. Some of the options were...interesting, for lack of a better word. Some were too bright on the eyes, others looked as though they wouldn’t hold up the house at all. 

And just who in their right mind wanted their house to be made out of cardboard? 

Two mailboxes, both decorated with cat paw prints, were placed on both sides of the door. “You’re so good at this design thing!” Merry exclaimed. 

“I guess you wouldn’t believe me if I said this was my first time,” Melissa said. 

“Thanks for the Poltergoid!” Coco exclaimed, lovingly placing her new Gyroid, which wailed like a ghost at regular intervals, next to the rest of her collection. “Here’s a gift! I hope you’ll associate this with me from now on!” 

Milo stored the leaf in his backpack. “No problem, Coco! Just let me know if you need any more favors!” Sara only waved. 

Coco bowed politely as they exited her house. “Before we get started on the last favor, I’d like to get these fossils to the museum,” Sara said. “I am literally carrying the rib cage of a dinosaur right now. All I need is an explorer’s hat so I can act like Fern in the Mesozoic Panic arc. By the way, what did Coco give you?” 

“A skeleton,” Milo said. “I’m not sure where she managed to find one of those.”

“Dug it up like we did with the fossils?” Sara suggested. “We need to stop speculating. Crossing Valley is more confusing than attempting to pace out the entire Dr. Zone timeline across all continuities.”

“It’s the best thing you can do!” a voice sung. Milo opened the door to the museum a little, peeking in through the crack. Sara leaned over his backpack, giggling quietly. Inside, Zack and Blathers had apparently taken a break from cleaning the lobby and were now jamming out to The Bettys. Zack in particular was really into the song, using a broom handle as a microphone and dipping it as his hips swished from side to side. 

Milo pushed the door open all the way. “Hi, Zack! I like your song cover!”

“Get ready for the Bettys, cause the Bettys are ready for-MILO!” 

Zack looked like a deer in the headlights, going wide-eyed when he spotted Milo clapping, then slammed a fist on the stop button of the radio. He dropped the broom and kicked it out of sight, chuckling nervously. 

Blathers tried to regain his professional demeanor, straightening his bow tie with a wing. “Welcome to the Fortuna Museum!” he said awkwardly. 

“You didn’t see anything!” Zack exclaimed. “I wasn’t singing to an all female pop rock band!” An album for the Bettys fell out of his pocket. “I have no idea who the Bettys are!” 

“Actually we came by because we found two fossils,” Sara said. “But the show was pretty great too.” 

Blathers’ eyes lit up. “Hoo! Give them to me so that I can identify them please!” Sara obliged and pulled a large ribcage and what appeared to be an ancient sea creature out of her pouch.  “Hoo, and double hoo, we certainly don’t have an ammonite in our collection yet! These ancient creatures lived in the Devonian period, and are thought to be one of the oldest ancestors of mollusks today! Quite interesting! And they survived up until the extinction of the dinosaurs. Hardy, yes. Very hardy. Oh, there I go running my beak.” 

“Don’t ask about the rib cage,” Milo said. Zack closed his mouth. 

“And this T-rex torso is marvelous to behold! King of beasts, indeed! Though it pales in comparison to quite a few sea creatures, a fact sadly forgotten nowadays. But, 40 feet is still an impressive length!” Blathers stored both fossils in his wings. “I’ll be sure to get these up faster than Gracie can spot an imperfection! Thank you for your generous contribution!”

“So, we’re forgetting about a few minutes ago, right?” Zack asked. 

Melissa felt her phone vibrate with a message, so she paused in trying to figure out the best placement for a pufferfish TV set to check it. “Sara sent me a video message,” she explained as the other girls crowded around her to see the video. 

She hit play and the screen enlarged to show Zack and an owl dancing to the Bettys. The camera quivered slightly as she and Milo tried to stifle their giggles. 

Merry and Kiki burst into high-pitched laughter. “He’s so cute when he gets caught,” Merry said breathlessly. 

Melissa smirked. “He’s not living this one down. Ever.”

Last I heard, he had not talked to her directly either. Jim Carrey wonders about all that The President says and he still has his job.  He commented that he has a dream about golfing with Trump and just holding that club and then he wakes up.

*****Chance the Rapper and a few others are calling for Bill Maher to be fired after his comment about working the fields.

*****A federal court upheld a ruling that could free Brendan Dassey. The court said the investigators led the confession and Dassey’s story was involuntary. Wisconsin has 90 days to retry.

*****Better call Saul had its season finale and OMG!! If Michael McKean does not get an Emmy, the world is just wrong!!  Actually the show and the whole cast is amazing but come on!!

*****Elon Musk , David Rank and others have resigned from the Trump administration after America was taken out of the Paris climate agreement. The deal took years of negotiation and compromise and clean energy is the economics of the future. Scary Clown said that he represents Pittsburgh, not Paris and seems to see the agreement as a threat to his isolation America first ideas.  The mayor of Pittsburgh tells us, “What Trump did was not only bad for the economy but also weakened America in the world.” It will take 4 years before the U.S. can actually quit the deal. Luckily, so many companies in this country are so against Trump that we’ll probably hit our goals anyway.** The mayors of Paris and Pittsburgh have since made their own climate deal.** Others have resigned over the lack of interest the Trump administration is showing AIDS.

*****The Eagles will use Vince Gill and Glenn Frey’s son, Deacon for some NY and LA shows.

*****Word is that the American Idol reboot wanted Randy Jackson for the host gig but he turned it down.

*****Wal Mart insurer, Ohio Casualty is in a dispute against Tracy Morgan who refuses to testify. The company claims he exaggerated his injuries after being hit by the Wal Mart truck. Morgan’s camp say that the 90 million they claim to have paid him is the exaggeration.

*****Do you notice all the home security ads on the ID channel?  I guess the true crime scares you into getting more protection.

***** After many of Trump’s minions have tried to convince us that what they have done is not a travel ban, the man himself says it is. They originally claimed that this would only be for 90 days and they would have new things in place and it has been over 90 days. The President tells us that they are extreme vetting anyway so why does he want to take this to the Supreme Court?**The supreme court is letting them do it now!!** His rabid supporters  and GOP cohorts are just enablers at this point.

*****The Cosby trial ended in a mistrial. I was at the Red Cross the other day and some employees were watching a news report about the trial. The pig of a man in the group piped when they put up a shot of Cosby’s accuser. “Ooh, she is not a pretty woman. I’d have to drug MYSELF to do her,” he laughed.** Cosby is now going to do a town hall type tour.

Now, I still try to believe that Comey is an honest man but he sometimes acts like a child (someone does something so he immediately seems to say, ok, well take that!!). But we have to notice that Scary Clown’s stories always change, Comey’s does not. As far as who called who, there must be records.**As Comey was testifying, the house repealed Dodd Frank. C’mon Press, let’s get ALL the news out there!** BTW, there are no tapes, that was just more scary clown BS.** It seems that 38% of this country is trying to run the show and those 38% don’t give a shit about the rest of us.

*****Investigators have found a direct link that puts Putin at the center of the election disruption. The plan was to help Trump and hurt Hillary. Word is that the Obama administration did not take action because they thought Putin might escalate his cyber meddling. John Kerry tried hard to get some action but the White house thought they would be accused of trying to sway things for Hillary. It’s sad but true because the Trump camp would have went nuts. The instability and doubt may have changed this country forever. It seems many do not care as long as they have their guy in power now. **Power outages in the Ukraine have also been linked to Russia. It looks like they are now gunning for us. The centralized system in the Ukraine is not as hard to set right as ours would be. Our power system is more complicated and would be harder to tamper with but also harder to straighten out. Russia appears to have an adaptable and reusable software.** Fox’s Brit Hume says that even if the Trump campaign did collude with Russia, “it’s not a crime.” They all say ‘America first’ but I am beginning to think they would all be happier in Russia.** Over 2000 pages of financial documents have been turned over to the investigation.

Just as this is in the works, Melania and Baron finally move into the White house.** Pence and even Trumps lawyer have hired attorneys.**After 8 years of class and pride, this country sure has taken a big step into the gutter.

*****The Generals seem to have their problems with the new President. A quote from Trump says,” The Lieutenants, the captain, their majors, the colonels- they’re professionals. They love doing it. So I authorized the generals to do the fighting.” I thought he said he knew more than them but now he gives no direction so his hands don’t get dirty. He has no strategy and there are so many vacant positions that there are not enough experts to go around. Using U.S. money to follow his family around while they make business deals instead of the government being properly staffed does not seem very safe for the rest of us.

Foxes did get a win for Jane Greenwood for costume design and featured actress, Cynthia Nixon. Nixon gave a fabulous speech about the people of this nation that do not take what is happening in Washington lying down. James Earl Jones won the lifetime achievement but only got a snippet of time on air. Laurie Metcalf won for leading actress in a play for A Doll’s house part 2. Bette Midler looked great and won but would not shut up.** Best Dressed was Sarah Paulson and worst was Carolyn Murphy.

*****Oliver Stone interviewed Putin over 20 hours in 4 visits. Putin drove him around and seemed to convince Stone that he is a pretty great guy. This is just another reason to blame Obama for the senate and house’s own doing. Keep things in chaos and blame the other guy while the rest of the country suffers. ** The Pres now says that the ACA should just be repealed, new plan or not.

*****Wow!! The NY senate after a decade, still did not vote on the child victims act. The Catholic Church and the Boy scouts lobby so hard because they think it will bankrupt them. The bill would let survivors bring civil cases until they are 50 years old, felonies until 28, and give a 1 year window for both public and private institutions instead of 90 days. Republican majority leader John Flanagan will not even put it up for a vote.

The Review:

I’ve had a high opinion of Devon Monk’s writing for a while now, so when Death and Relaxation was offered as a review copy (audio production quality) I snatched it up. I’ve been on a pretty hard urban fantasy kick lately, but I’ll admit this series wasn’t even on my radar (probably because of the atrocious cover). But I tell you what – it hit the spot!

It had a great combination of concept (small town Oregon where gods go to vacation), character (a young female police chief who takes over the department after her father dies), mystery (who the heck is ballsy enough to commit a murder in a town of gods?), and love story (the cute dynamic between the MC and the love interest – it’s just enough to be a clear selling point of the novel, but not overdone to the point where it becomes the sole focus). It was one of those books perfectly suited to my mood, and because it came from a seasoned author I trust, I was able to turn off my over-critical eye and just enjoy the ride.

Admittedly the concept wouldn’t stand up to close scrutiny, but it’s clear from the start that its main purpose is to enhance the quirky nature of this small touristy town. I started with the novella (Dues and Don’ts – Free on the author’s webiste), which I would recommend because it sets the stage on what to expect in this town a lot better than the first book. It incorporated the tradition of local artisans hiding glass figurines along the beach for tourists to find, which apparently is something that actually happens in the town the series is based on. I was enamored with the whole thing. I think the fun dynamics between all the characters in this little community is my biggest source of delight. Quirky fun things like rhubarb cooking contests an long-standing interpersonal squabbles (which, naturally, involve the whole town). Any Gilmore Girls fan out there will get a better idea if I say it’s a supernatural version of Stars Hollow (only without the aggravating characters that take the fun out of the scenes – Mayor Taylor Doose, I’m talking to you).

The only ding against its rating is that I thought the solution to one of the main conflicts of the story was completely obvious right from the start. I can half-rationalize it away if I try hard enough. Like, maybe the main character had too many things going on to see it clearly. But really it would’ve made the book stronger to either hide it better or to have the characters figure it out sooner. So far that has been my only gripe.

This is one of my new personal favorite series starters – I enjoyed it that much. It is definitely more on the lighthearted side of the genre. There’s not a lot of dark grittiness that sets the tone for comparable series. But maybe that’s what I’d needed – a bit of a pick-me-up. 🙂

Recommendations: start with the novella! I’d hand this series to people who like urban fantasy without the semi-horror aspect. It’s actually a great crossover novel between uf, mystery, and romance. If you can snag the GraphicAudio version, you’re in for a treat! Go in with a light heart and have some fun. 🙂
