Chapter 33:Â Paper Prince. Katsuâs investigation sends her to the last place Mitsuhide wants her to go, with the last person he would want her to be with.
Mitsuhide x OC; Hideyoshi x MC (Mai)
All Chapters Archived on Ao3Â
Logline -Â With Mai, Hideyoshi, and Aki missing, Mitsuhide and Katsuko reluctantly team up. Disguised as a merchant and his concubine, can they outsmart the man known as the God of Deceit?
Have lockpick, will travelâŚ
Francisco was not home, and his building locked and closed up as if he expected to be gone for a while. Another opportunity to put the lock picks to good use.  Now that I understood the trick to it all, it took me mere seconds to open the lock. No wonder these locks are not used very often - they're terrible.
It took only a few more minutes to break into the desk and retrieve my money. After considering the matter further, I also confirmed there were no false bottoms and hidden drawers in his desk. Though Francisco said he didnât have any information that could help me find Aki now, I also wanted to find out who Aki had been in the past. Â Aki then, the Aki my mother knew, he too was someone I needed to know, even if it was just the memory of who he used to be.
All I found was one more drawing. Francisco could have become an artist if he had not gone into a time traveling career. Heâd sketched a large group of people sitting in a room full of books. I recognized Aki and my mother, but the others... wait... was that a toddler Sasuke? The serious expression seemed familiar, even if the mochi patterned onesie did not. I debated taking this with me too - when I found Sasuke again he'd be sure to find it amusing - but these were Francisco's memories and I couldn't steal them.
Another thing I couldnât find? Tea. So with a pot of terrible coffee at my side, I picked up my old life, and after too many weeks, I settled down to finally, finally, finish decoding and reading Aki's letter. Cloud city moment⌠Sasuke⌠bank numbers. I skimmed past the old news, trying to find the point where I'd stopped.
However, just as Francisco has his reasons, I am requesting that you stay here. There is an important mission, a vital one that could mean the difference between the future of your timeline, of all timelines, and chaos. There is a young boy by the name of Hikosane. That is all I know about him in this timeline. Soon after you arrived in this era, a cataclysmic event splintered the timeline, and Hikosane (or sometimes Hiko) was sent onto very different paths. It is vital that this boy survives past his tenth birthday.
Hiko? Shoâs brother Hiko? It was not an uncommon name â there were probably dozens of Hikos scattered across the land. I read further, but Aki was not of any help.
Who is he? Unfortunately, that depends upon the timeline.
Great. I suppose I could proceed upon the fact that the Hiko I knew was about the correct age, and that heâd already nearly been killed. Why was he important, though? Was he someone special to the future? Someoneâs father or grandfather? Oooh, what if he was my great, great x20 grandfather?
WHO is he, you are probably asking me now. As I once told Master Mikumo, heâs not anyone specific, but he is the butterfly. In every timeline, he will do something important to protect the future. It might be as simple as giving a warlord a mouthful of water at the right moment. Or it might be as complicated as growing up to be an important Daimyo himself. The event that threw his alternates onto different paths, didnât erase his importance to the future⌠only his role.
Therefore, in every timeline, Iekane is trying to kill him. I once told you that I thought Iekaneâs antipathy to you was simple jealousy. Â That was not a lie, but it was not the entire story. And it is not a story that I am able to share.
Thanks Aki.
Katsuko, I am certain you believe I have given you few choices in this era, but in this, I have no other recourse but to tell you that what you do next is your decision. You may choose to reject everything I have told you, but I hope you do not. More than that, I hope that you never have to read this letter and that I have managed to give you this information in person. But if I have not, know that I am proud of you, and the life you have made for yourself here.
Aki
The sun was already at its highpoint when I finally put the decoded letter down. Not because it had been that difficult to decode, but because I'd had a hard time believing everything he had told me in his typical far too cryptic Aki way.
Of course because either he was in a hurry, or because he didnât want to segue into science, Aki didnât bother wasting time (time which he clearly had a lot of given due to the whole time travel thing) explaining. Why? How did he know these things, or how he knew that Hiko was important to the future? Why was Iekane trying to kill him?
Iekane.
There he was again. All roads led back to him.
Gunshot? Shojumaru and I both immediately alerted and looked around. There ⌠a man, just in profile, slipping around the corner of the restaurant. The profile was enough though â it was Iekane.
Was I imagining that, inserting a memory of him at the scene because Aki's letter had suggested it to me?
I am not careless â I was pushed.
âIt wonât matter if he runs.â Iekane made a fist, and I rolled away from the punch before it connected. âNo matter how many timelines you try to save in him, weâll always be waiting for you.â
Those, those were not my memories, and yet, they were clearer than the memory of the accident. What was happening to me?
âHikosane â on the count of three, Okatsu will throw her knife behind and to the left of the snake. As soon as it turns to look at the knife, you are to roll to the right.â
My fingers were becoming numb, but there was no way I was going to let the boy or the branch slip away from me. Mentally, I chanted instructions to myself. Donât let go of the branchâŚ. Donât let go of the boy⌠keep your mouth closed when youâre underwater. The last one was a difficult mantra to follow when all I wanted to do was cough up the water that Iâd already swallowed.
I rubbed my eyes, hoping to find a path through these familiar-unfamiliar images. Was this the Hiko I would or had saved?
Should I retrieve Hiko and keep him with me? I couldnât watch over him every minute of the day, and at some point Motonari would return. If he found me with Hiko, then heâd probably kill me on the spot.
Could I take Hiko to the Mountain for safety? Would he go with me if I asked?
What if he was the wrong Hiko?
Cursing Aki for giving me so few identifying details, I wondered if I should find Iekane and take care of him before he could get to Hiko? It seemed that he was the key to finding Aki. And possibly finding the right Hiko.
And to find out where Iekane was, I'd have to go back to the last place I had gotten any word about him - de Sousa's.
Thankfully my breaking and entering skills were far better these days, thanks to... Mitsuhide.
That decided, I went through Francisco's office looking for tools that might help me next. An extra dagger, a few small trinkets that could be traded for food or other weapons, and some loose coins I found in the desk. What wasnât in the office, and still missing, was my bravado. I hopefully hadn't left that at Mitsuhide's. I was going to need that the most.
What, or who, I wasn't going to need was Kyubei, but he was waiting outside Francisco's when I left the building. He was leaning against the wall of a restaurant, his expression as inscrutable as always. "Did he ask you to follow me, or is this a side gig?"
"He asked, but I would have followed you anyway. He only wishes to assure himself that you are safe, and know where to find you if he-" Kyubei paused, seemed to be choosing his wording, "Realizes he made a mistake letting you go."
"I am sure he didnât say all that." While I had seen Mitsuhide beat himself up over imagined mistakes, this, my voluntary exit from his life, wasnât the kind of thing that would torture him. Not unless my leaving eventually affected the Oda as a whole.
"No. He only said he wanted to make sure of your direction in case he located Aki." Kyubei handed me some coins. "I was paraphrasing."
Was this money from Mitsuhide⌠or Kyubei? Knowing that he would not take them back, even if I refused them, I put them in my coin purse. "Thank you. I haven't found him, although I have more information that suggests the person involved in his disappearance is one of Aki's old couriers. Iâm going to follow that thread next."
When Kyubei relayed that to Mitsuhide, as I knew he would, Mitsuhide would understand who I meant.
"I wish you a good journey then." Kyubei bowed and there seemed to be a few more unsaid words in that bow. Then he walked away. I watched until he disappeared from view. He was totally going to double back and follow me - but it was always nice to have back-up.
Not wanting to have to sneak into de Sousaâs house in daylight, I decided to check up on my horse. I had hoped that Francisco might have managed to stop by and pet her, but given her mood when I arrived at the posting inn where Iâd been boarding her, such visits had been few or not at all. To say she was annoyed at being cooped up for weeks would be an understatement. It took me most of the rest of the afternoon to ride the sulks out of her, and she nearly bit a chunk out of my shoulder in the process. Nor was she pleased that when the ride ended, I reluctantly returned her to the inn.
It was faster to walk to de Sousaâs, and had I brought her with me, I would have had to find a place to hide her.
As before, the lights on the second floor were bright, and I could see the shadows of men and women walking past. Another dinner or banquet? He certainly had an active social calendar.
After careful consideration of my options, I took the oilskin that I used when I was delivering messages, wrapped it around a blank piece of paper, and walked in the machiya as if I were simply making a delivery (itâs not as if I hadnât delivered hundreds of messages in the past). Once inside the door, it was simple enough to peel off into the office unnoticed.
Good to know that several weeks with Mitsuhide had not dimmed my ability to blend into the scenery as if I were invisible.
It was quiet. No rain this tiâno. I refused to reminisce about the last time I'd been in here. The time when Mitsuhide had nearly desk-a-doned me to cover up our search. You are indeed remembering it. After mentally slapping myself in the face, I made my way to the desk that I totally wasnât reminiscing about, and opened the (still unlocked) drawer.
It seemed that de Sousa never had discovered that Mitsuhide and I had gone through his desk. Having pinpointed the date of de Sousa's betrayal previously, it was a simple task to go through the subsequent correspondence in search of any clues to Iekane's current whereabouts.
Again, I flipped past personal looking missives, random business lists⌠there fewer letters to go through, and nothing at all from Portugal. Ok, that did make sense, as it wasnât as if the big Portuguese ships were docking even on a monthly basis. He probably heard from Europe no more than one or two times a year.
At last, I found correspondence from Iekane himself. Unfortunately, it had limited information and was, in itself simply asking for where de Sousa would like balance of the funds delivered and noting that he had received the weapons, they met with approval, and would de Sousa be interested in a business proposition?
It was typical of Iekaneâs half-lies and insinuations, and I got the impression he was feeling out de Sousa as to how far and how much he'd be willing to deal. I got it. The Nanban merchant had already reneged on a contract with Nobunaga, but that took little effort. He'd then slipped further into crime by looking the other way when Motonari had taken Hideyoshi and Mai prisoners (maybe he hadnât even known about that, or at least refused to know). Perhaps he had convinced himself that he'd done nothing to cause their disappearance.
So here was Iekane asking, nudging, him further down the path of evil. Offering more business propositions⌠gauging interest. Â
Unfortunately, this missive neither spelled out what he wanted de Sousa to do, nor gave any specific clues as to where he was currently located.
Ugh.
Frustrated, I started to reorganize the correspondence and --
Oh you've got to be kidding me.
Lying on top, (on top!) of the desk was another letter. It must have recently arrived. Clearly de Sousa was not an evil genius... no, just a man tempted down the slope into money and power who had not yet learned to lock his evil plans in a drawer! Iâd given him too much credit and not even bothered to look on top of the desk.
If Mitsuhide had been here, he would have teased me for not thinking about that first⌠or, just waved the letter at me with a smug grin.
Cursing myself for the delay, I opened the letter, it was longer, but from context, de Sousa must have previously responded to Iekaneâs feeler letter and professed himself willing to help. Iekane's response? As long as you can supply muskets, I expect this to be a long and profitable partnership. Before the first snow falls, a representative from Ashikaga Yoshiaki will deliver a partial payment of silver for the next shipment of weapons.
Yoshiaki? The deposed Shogun? Where had I last heard his named mentioned? I attempted the twin memory tasks of putting everything back where I had found it, while I tried to recall exactly who had mentioned him before. Because the name had come up over the summer.
But standing around the office wouldnât help me remember things, and it would increase the danger of discovery, so I gave the room one last double check, then slipped out, leaving the town house just as stealthily as I had entered it. Right on time, too. The current party seemed to be breaking up, as I heard the thumping of footsteps from the top floor.
Sticking close to the shadow of the building, I turned to make my way back toward the center of the city. Just as I reached the corner, I paused. What if that letter from Iekane had been delivered by a messenger who stayed for dinner? After all, the letter had been on top of the desk, which indicated a recent arrival. For that matter, what if it had been delivered by lekane himself?
Ok, that last bit was unlikely. If Iekane brought the letter in person, well, then he would have had no need to write it down. Even so, it was worth watching those who departed the building. I couldn't follow all of them, but it was worth making a note of who was there and checking them out later. Ducking behind an ornamental shrub, I crouched lower and smaller to observe the guests.
Tadayo, the fabric merchant, ok, he was a possible messenger, given his prior connection with Motonari. A trader who was also a member of the Kaigoshu. I couldnât figure an obvious interest there. If I recalled correctly, his primary business was exporting local ceramics in trade for Chinese and Indian art. Then a tall graceful man who I had no problem identifying, as there was no mistaking the elegant profile of Yoshimoto.
âI've little experience with him, though I once saw him conversing with an agent of Yoshiaki, which does not speak well of him.â Yoshimoto folded up the handkerchief as neatly, more neatly in fact, than it had been and picked up another.
Ah ha! Yoshimoto was the one who mentioned seeing âShojumaruâ with Yoshiaki.
Congratulations Yoshimoto⌠youâve just become a person of interest.
While I watched from my stakeout shrub, Yoshimoto climbed into a waiting palanquin. Had he even left Sakai in the past month? Either way, it was likely that he was at the same inn as before.
By the time Yoshimoto drifted into his room, I was waiting there for him. Not to be mistaken for an intruder (ok, I was an intruder, but not one with nefarious intentions), I had left a few lanterns burning. As intended, he saw me as soon as he entered, and without appearing to be startled, he simply bowed. "Katsu, you're looking well. I'd heard you'd been in an accident, but when I inquired if I could stop by, Mitsuhide said you were too ill."
Really? Mitsuhide hadn't mentioned that. So much had happened since the accident that it felt like it had occurred a year ago, instead of merely weeks. "There were a few days where I would not have been suitable for visitors." And I doubted that even Yoshimotoâs benign affection for me would have survived if I had thrown up on him. "Anyway, I've recovered."
Without acknowledging that I had broken into his rooms (after all this breaking and entering I'd been doing, the color of my parachute was probably larceny), Yoshimoto treated me like an invited guest, offering me sake, then when I turned that down, called for a tea maid to come and make us a fresh pot.
In the meanwhile, he, without any modesty, changed into his night kimono, pressing the tea maid into service as a valet of sorts. I allowed Yoshimoto the time. While it was true I wanted answers to my questions, it seemed impolite to interrogate him while he was changing clothes. Plus, even though I was getting used to Yoshimotoâs casual indifference to nudity, the naked Yoshimoto was a bit distracting. Â
Finally once the (slightly overcome) tea maid had departed (after receiving an elegant kiss on the back of her hand), Yoshimoto settled in. He didnât exactly say, 'to what do I owe the honor of your call' but instead, with a graceful wave Yoshimoto indicated that I had the floor.
"Yoshiaki." Would Yoshimoto look guilty if he heard the name?
To the contrary, he simply closed his eyes for a moment, but when they reopened, he looked like he was in pain. "What have you discovered?"
"As far as I know, you're the last person who has seen him, or at least the last person I'm aware has seen him." Well aside from Motonari and - "wait, did you know that Shojumaru is Motonari Mouri?" Yoshimoto could have saved us a lot of time had he mentioned that before, and I finally felt a belated wave of sympathy for Mitsuhide, for if I had given up Kennyo's name in the early summer, I likely would have saved him some time as well.
"I did not. I only saw the man in passing as I was leaving." Yoshimoto pulled the tie out of his hair, and rubbed his scalp. His fine dark hair flew everywhere, puffing out, creating a nimbus in the lantern light. "In retrospect, it makes much sense... and I wish I had stayed to learn that. Yoshiaki meeting with someone with access to an army and a navy has far more ramifications than if he were meeting with a merchant. What else have you learned?"
To his credit, Yoshimoto dropped the lazy attitude and gave me his full attention.
Though I didnât want to waste the time, I went ahead and summarized what had occurred over the past month. The rescue of Mai and Hideyoshi was a tangent to this and possibly not as important to someone tied to Kasugayama, but it had been the hoarding of information that had left both Yoshimoto and Mitsuhide with missing puzzle pieces, "Iekane was brokering a deal between Yoshiaki and de Sousa for more weapons. Personally, I'm interested in finding Iekane, and it seems if I am to do that, I need to find Yoshiaki.â Luckily Yoshimoto was already aware of the time travel aspect, or this would be a much longer conversation. âDo you know where he is?" I left unspoken a question of why Yoshimoto knew.
Yoshimoto rubbed his arm, almost as if he were reaching for a phantom limb. "I do. He wishes for the Imagawa to join him. I have been able to hold off my vassals by pointing out that alone, with our limited resources, such a campaign would lead to the slaughter of what little remains of our clan, but clearly the situation has changed."
"Is this a fight you wish to join?" Was I even now sitting down with an enemy of the Oda? Sure, I had always known that Sasuke worked for Kenshin, but I had never got the sense that his personal interest was to prolong the wars. Then again that had all been easier before I got to know the Oda better. Aki had always struck me as a lawful neutral (a clarification that was rapidly being reassessed to chaotic neutral), and I had figured that the information we were collecting was in the service of trying to help people out of the way of danger.
"In truth, what I wish to do and what I must do are on opposite sides of my being." Yoshimoto looked out the window, where the waning moon bathed him in an unearthly glow â it was as if he was fading in front of me. "If my vassals desire this battle, I am powerless to stop them, and my only chance is to join them to mitigate the loss of life." He looked back at me, "I imagine though, that the information you seek is only Yoshiakiâs direction."
I nodded, whatever emotion Yoshimoto was feeling, it was so thick it clogged the air in the room, invading my throat.
"You won't get anywhere near him. Though he has no army, he does have a large contingent of personal guards, and he is the guest of a daimyo who will protect his life and privacy." Yoshimoto sighed, and before I could point out that I didnât need to get to Yoshiaki, only Iekane, he said, "I will take you there.â

On Writing: Plotbunnies and Escalation
One writing hazard is falling down a research rabbit-hole, where you end up reading up on things like ancient Greek loom weights despite your story being neither ancient, nor Greek, nor about weaving at all. Another writing hazard, also tied to research though possibly more productive, is... escalating bunnies.
You know, the kind that start from a simple, âgee, a vampire paladin would be really neat if I could pull it off; would it work better xuanhuan-style in ancient Korea?â
Youâd think that would be an innocent question. Until you start reading up on the various times and kingdoms occupying the Korean Peninsula pre-modern times. Which is when the bunnies start to escalate.
âI donât want to do a generic in-the-past thing. I ought to pick a specific section of history so I have a good idea what would be going on, even if I do make it fantasy. Hmm, I know a bit of the Tokugawa Era in Japan, that might be a place to start given I know Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Korea in 1592....â
Said innocent thought leads to reading up on the Imjin War. Interesting stuff. If eep.
â...Maybe thatâs a little too interesting. I couldnât have characters running off on Adventures without worrying about battles over the next ridge. And Iâm not up to writing major battle scenes. Maybe a little later than that? What else was going on? Outside of some Pilgrims hijacking a ship to go to New England, of all places, during the Little Ice Age....â
Cue Little Ice Age research jaunt, especially a big thick book on said age all over the known world. Cue even more eep.
âSo thereâs info on China here but not much on Korea specifically. Though I know they were into astronomy as much as China, and there were some interesting supercomets in recorded history....â
Cue reading up on supercomets, old speculations on space spores, and modern known facts on organic compounds in comets. During which the bunnies are quiet. One might even say, suspiciously quiet.
âHuh, maybe I should check if thereâs any books specifically on China that at least are in the right time for the Little Ice Age-â
(Yes. Yes there are. At least one is very specific.)
Cue stumbling into all kinds of weirdness from the 1500s on, great backstory for an ageless cultivator character (ah, xuanhuan flavor!) that also drags in European explorers, Jesuits, the whole mess with possibly seditious priests plotting to take over Japan, and a whole chain of events that could plausibly connect hummingbirds, the Manila galleons, and an ancient vampire. Â
Currently staring at plot and notes. âI was trying to just write a good final battle against shark-pirates. What do you mean I need to study Yi Sun-sinâs maneuvers in the Roaring Strait?â
...Bunnies. Sigh.

guess whoâs back...
hello everyone! once again, itâs ya girl nina, coming back from yet another hiatus (đ
). getting adjusted to life as an adult in another country has been a lot, but iâve really missed being creative and posting on tumblr, so i am once again announcing my return (and hopefully this time itâll stick).
however, things are going to be a bit different. over the past few months, iâve been working on an original story! itâs along the same vein as naruto/my hero academia/other similar anime, but the characters and plot are my own original ideas. iâve been really wanting to share this story with other people and gush about my characters, so iâve decided to start posting my original story on this tumblr. iâll start by posting a sneak peek and some character profiles, and hopefully soon begin posting chapters! (i do have a large personal event coming up next weekend, so i wonât be able to edit and post a full chapter until then, but i should have plenty of character bios to get yâall excited âşď¸). as I post about my story and upload chapters, i would really appreciate some feedback. i donât mind taking constructive criticism, but of course be nice and civil about it. and if you really like something, let me know! my ultimate goal is to hopefully self-publish one day, but since that is a large goal to work towards, iâm hoping that you guys can help me improve my story and provide the support i need to reach that goal.
as far as posting fanfic goes, i probably wonât be posting much fanfic anymore. iâm just not super into anime at the moment (at least to the extent of writing fanfic, though i am here to talk about it of course). i have some old drafts and ideas i may work on and post at some point, but donât expect it. for now, iâm really focused on my personal story, and i hope you guys will enjoy it just as much as my fanfics :)
that all being said, iâll drop a sneak peek of my story under the cut! if you guys have any comments/questions/concerns, please drop me an ask. i hope that i can be active on here again (for real this time), and share my story with you. iâm nervous to put it out there, but yâall have been nothing but kind since i started this blog almost 2 years ago (!!), and i look forward to sharing my story with you :)Â
love, nina đ
sneak peek:
âItâs been a while, Hiroko,â Hideyoshi started, his tone still as light as it had been in front of everyone else earlier.
âDonât call me that.â Any semblance of fake niceness had disappeared from her voice. He doesnât deserve any kindness, Not after all that heâs done.
His smile dropped, the mask finally coming off. âWould you rather me call you Princess, then?â A hint of a sneer crept into his tone. This was the Hideyoshi Kazama that she knew -- the way he was since starting at the Academy, at least.Â
âKawashima is fine.â
âIâm not calling you by that fake name.â
âWould you prefer that I tell my father youâre going to blow my cover?â A flash of fear shot across his face, and his dark expression dropped.
âFine,â he said, somewhat defeated. He took a breath, and his firm tone returned. âYou remember why youâre here, right?â
Hiroko nodded silently, feeling a lump grow in her throat. âYes, of course.â
At that moment, she saw Hideyoshi look behind her, down the hall in the direction they had come from. Hiroko turned, trying to look as unsuspicious as possible, and her heart began to beat heavily in her chest. She locked eyes with Chishiya, who was sporting his usual grumpy expression and had his hands shoved deeply in his pockets.
âGotta pee,â he murmured, passing behind Hideyoshi into the restroom. Hirokoâs nerves were on fire. If he catches usâŚ
Hideyoshi stepped close to her, their shoulders nearly touching, and whispered in her ear. âRemember that youâre not here to make friends. Do your job and keep your head down. Weâre all counting on you, Princess.â With that, he placed his hands in his pockets, and walked away casually, as if he had just left the bathroom.
(let me know if you have any feedback, and drop an emoji or something in the comments if youâre excited! iâd love to know if you guys as as into this as i am. i hope to post some more content from my story soon âşď¸)

Middle Ground
A Mitsuhide Akechi fanfic - approx. 2200 words. This scene occurs well after the events of the romantic epilogue. Fluff.
First: Mitsuhide and the Maiden
Previous: Bonding
âSo . . . separate beds?â Mitsuhideâs wry smile was only a little bitter.
âYes. I know itâs silly. Iâd . . . Iâd rather be in there with you.â The chatelaine, soon to be Lady Akechi, looked down, her expression a mixture of shame and defiance.
âItâs fine. I will have you all to myself soon enough. What is a night or two apart?â
She looked up without raising her head, trying to gauge his emotions.
Mitsuhide wasnât having any of that. He took her chin between his finger and thumb and gently lifted until her gaze met his. âIt is fine.â Then he leaned forward to brush a kiss across her cheek. With his lips almost close enough to touch her skin, he added. âAre you so eager to be in my arms again? Do you want to . . . test out the guest room? Or your childhood bed?â
He had the intended effect. She shivered and licked her lips. âYou are so bad!â
âYou are the one protesting our brief separation.â Mitsuhide pressed another kiss to her cheek and leaned back.
She crossed her arms. âYouâre right. Itâs just a few nights. But when we get back to the city -â a wicked smile turned her lips up at the corners, promising all sorts of fun.
âSo forward, my little mouse. So eager. You make me wish we were home already.â
âThatâs the idea.â She turned and threw him a saucy look. âSomething to dream about.â
Mitsuhide chuckled. âGood night, little one.â Something to dream about indeed. He watched her hips as she walked down the hall, until she turned into her room and shut the door. She really had no idea what impact she had on him. He wondered if it was his practiced art of hiding his true emotion, or simply that she couldnât see how beautiful she was. How desirable.
He went into the room and shut the door. It was so strange. The electronic hum of household devices. The cold fluorescent light from the street lamps in his window. Distant traffic sounds blending with barking dogs and strains of music. Mitsuhide felt suddenly very alone and very out of place.
Despite his refusal, the thought of spending one night, much less three, without his little one, felt impossible. A burden too heavy for him to bear. He needed to feel her in his arms, to fall asleep to the sound of her breathing, the beat of her heart. Her warmth grounded him in this strange place.
Mitsuhide gave a dry, soundless laugh. Who was the little mouse now?
Slowly, meditatively, he dressed for bed and lay down. He would embrace this world, different as it was from his own. He had to, because it was the one that gave birth to his beloved. And so, listening to the heartbeat of this small town, the viscous thrum of modern life, he drifted into an uneasy sleep.
Miyake and Sasuke arrived the following day at lunch. They met up at a local restaurant. Youko was friends with the owner and able to borrow a few tables in the back for privacy.
Minoru, the chatelaineâs often grumpy father, seemed to be on his best behavior. Not smiling, but distantly polite to the two newcomers. He thawed a little when his daughter threw her arms around each of the men in greeting.
No one said much as they ate. Youko and Minoru sat beside their daughter on one side of the table, glancing up at her strange friends. Sasuke, Mitsuhide and Miyake sat across from them, looking nervous.
It was Sasuke who finally broke the silence. He cleared his throat. âI understand your daughter told you about our time in the Sengoku. Understandably, you want proof. You have questions. We are here to give you what evidence we can.â
Minoru snorted. âWhat do you get out of this charade?â He gestured to Mitsuhide. âIs he paying you?â
Miyake looked as if he wanted to speak up, but Sasuke beat him to it. âNo. I am here because your daughter is my friend.â He reached into his bag. âI know it isnât much, but I brought my ninja kit as proof. These - these are smoke pellets. And that is a kunai. This is a sleeping poison, and this -â he went through the items, explaining what they were and how he made them. Detailed descriptions of the tools and materials he had available.
When Sasuke finished, Minoru looked thoughtful.
Youko smiled across as Sasuke. âYou seem a very resourceful young man. And you are also the one that discovered these wormholes?â
âYes maâam.â Sasuke dipped his head, embarrassed by the compliment.
âIt could just be you have a - a fascination with this stuff. Read a lot. Saw some movies,â Minoru said. His gruff voice held more than a hint of doubt. Even he didnât buy his own explanation.
Sasuke nodded. âI could have. But even that would not yield the encyclopedic knowledge Iâve developed. I would go into greater detail, but I imagine you donât have the underlying historical education to make use of most of the information I could provide. Unless . . . Are you a history buff?â His voice sounded different at the end, as if this question was important. Light glinted off his glasses, hiding his eyes. The air around him was charged, almost crackling with a sudden and unexpected energy.
âNo. I canât say I am,â Minoru replied.
âHm, too bad.â The strange tension in the ninja disappeared as suddenly as it came.
Mitsuhide nudged Miyake. The warrior muttered something under his breath and then rolled his shoulders. âAlright, old man. I donât blame you for doubting us. Iâd think I was crazy too, or lying. But what Lady Akechi told you is true. Sheâs been living with my lord for the last few months. And itâs a good thing too. He smiles a lot more now. Eats too, and sleeps almost like a human.â
âMiyake,â Mitsuhide growled. âThatâs not the kind of evidence they need to hear.â
âSorry, but itâs the truth. And if you donât mind me saying, well, even if you do, your daughter makes for one hell of a princess. She makes the servants happy to do a good job because she notices the little things. And the guards . . . theyâd all die for her, and not just because Lord Akechi demands it. Sheâs kind and good to all of us. I donât get to spend time at the castle, but I hear how she remembers birthdays and congratulates newlyweds and -â
Youko laughed, a sound Mitsuhide recognized. Much like his own little one, but matured. More elegance with just the same amount of joy. âIt sounds like you have a following,â she smiled at her daughter.
The chatelaine blushed. âI really donât. Heâs exaggerating, mom. Really.â
âHe is not,â Mitsuhide chided. âThough I donât think thatâs the kind of proof her father -â
Minoru interrupted, his gruff voice quieting the table. âItâs clear youâve gotten to know her. My little girl.â He gave her a brief smile. âI am still . . . itâs a lot to take in. This wild story. But she stands by it and there is clearly - something true in it.â
His daughter hugged him. âI knew youâd come around, papa.â
He dislodged himself from her unexpected embrace. âI didnât say Iâm buying the whole story. Just,â he waved his hand, âsome of it rings true.â
The tension at their table eased, and conversation began to flow more naturally. Youko and Minoru had a lot of questions, and were finally ready to hear the answers.
***
Kyubei followed Ranmaru through the thick forest undergrowth, barely able to make out the dirt path he led them down. This was supposed to lead to a safe house, one that Kennyo agreed to meet him in. He wished the demon-abbot had a taste for teahouses instead of abandoned forest shacks, but it could be worse.
He could be with Hideyoshi, hunting Motonari across the ports. Kyubei wasnât afraid of pirates, but being on a boat . . . the constant roll of the ocean waves made him sick as a dog. No matter how many trips he made, he never gained any kind of tolerance for the motion. So this, the dirt and the bugs and the thick air under the trees, was a better deal all around.
âThis is it.â Ranmaru stopped just before the path opened on a small clearing. There was a half-rotted shack ahead, once a shrine to some local deity, now fallen into disrepair.
Kyubei was surprised to see he wasn'tâ the only one here to speak to the monk. Another familiar figure sat on the wooden steps outside the shrine. âShingen?â
Takeda grinned up at him, pushing a lock of sweaty hair out of his face. âIf it isnât Mitsuhideâs maid!â He laughed. âKidding, kidding! I just expected to see the kitsune out here himself.â
âHe is otherwise engaged.â
âIs he?â Shingenâs smile was dangerous now. âThis wouldnât have anything to do with our missing ninja, would it?â
âIf it does, Iâll send him your head,â Yukimura spoke up from somewhere to Kyubeiâs left.
Ranmaru put his hands up, laughing as if this were all so silly. âItâs too early for threats. Come on! Letâs make some tea and relax. The abbot will be here shortly.â
Kyubei turned his head a fraction, just enough to see Yukimura lower his spear. âTea would be good.â He ignored the younger warriorâs scowl as he followed Ranmaru to the shrine.
He didnât sit, but stood near Takeda, resting his back against a tree.
Shingen, for his part, pretended to be fully relaxed. It wasnât quite effective though. His brow held a waxy sheen, his eyes looked sunken and fevered. Worse, his breathing was labored. A rasp, harsh as a winter cough.
Kyubei watched him carefully. This was a bad situation. A dying man had fewer qualms than one that had to live with his decisions. He hadnât realized Takeda was so bad off though, despite the reports heâd received. The Tiger of the Kai was legend. Not a man to be taken down by sickness. And yet.
âDonât get any ideas,â Yukimura snapped, coming to stand beside his lord.
Shingen chuckled. âSo protective, Yuki.â His laugh turned into a thick, unproductive cough. When he finally got control of himself, he directed his attention to Kyubei. âSo. Where did your lord and my ninja go off to? And donât tell me you donât know. Thereâs too much tying their disappearance together. Iâd rather not have to kill you today for lying to me.â
Another situation he wished he had his lordâs guidance. What information was safe to pass along, and what plans would the ripples of this conversation affect? Kyubei swallowed. âI suspect they have gone to visit the chatelaineâs home. 500 years in the future.â
Shingen nodded as if this was the answer he expected. âSasuke asked me if Iâd like to visit his hometown. He said - he said they could cure me.â
âAnd then he left without you.â Yukimura punched the shrine wall, causing the whole building to tremble.
Ranmaru poked his head out. âHey! Careful or youâll bring the whole thing down on my head!â
âSorry,â Yukimura growled.
âIf it is any consolation, I donât believe Lord Akechi or Sarutobi left when they did intentionally. The information my lord left indicates the trip was meant to take place later. He was still . . . putting things in place for his extended absence.â
âThatâs bull,â Yukimura grumbled, but he relaxed his grip on the spear.
They had no more time to talk it over as Kennyoâs shadow fell across the clearing. He came out of the trees like a spirit, the rings on his staff clinking. âIt appears you found me. Again.â
Shingen grinned. âWell, old friend, I did have to hunt through every abandoned shrine in the province to get to this one.â
Kennyo snorted in disbelief.
âRanmaru brought me,â Kyubei bowed. âIt is a pleasure to see you again.â
âI have little time or patience for guests. Tell me what you want.â Kennyo crossed his arms.
âYour help with the false emperor.â Kyubei didnât look up from his bow. âWe both know Ashikaga is dead. The scribe we set up in his place, or the men around him, have gone astray.â
âI could care less. Let the exiled shogun harass the devil-king. Nobunaga and his pawns can go to hell.â Kennyoâs eyes were dark and full of anger. It radiated from him like heat from a fire.
Shingen shrugged. âYeah, sure. I hate him too. But itâs not just him getting hit. These idiot daimyos in his retinue are conscripting farmers. Villagers. Innocent folk that should be left out of a power grab.â
The demon abbotâs eyes fell on his old friend. âAnd you believe this is a worse fate than what the Oda have in store for them?â
âI do.â Shingenâs gaze didnât waver.
Kennyoâs shoulders shook and it took Kyubei a moment to realize the abbot was laughing. He shook his head. âYou always were a fool, Shingen. But fine. I will tell you what I know. I donât think you can stop what has been set in motion.â

Notes from a Con Man - Musical Great Pretender Stage Report Act 1
This is a bit extremely rambly, but I want to give some description of the distinguishing features of the staged version of Great Pretender as compared to the anime, although my plan is not to give a complete recap of the plot, as Iâm sure anyone who is choosing to read this has watched the anime - or so I assume, but you know you do you. I try to control myself and keep it just to what is relevant, but Iâm also a wordy bitch and that will never change, so, reader beware, I guess.
The stage is set up with three levels (the stage level, the second floor, and the third floor where the band is). Both the stage level and second floor have a couple of rooms that can be pulled out or opened, and backgrounds are projected onto the set to create different settings. With the exception of the opening theme, which is taken from the anime, all of the music is live, and thereâs very good interplay between the band and the performers, and I donât know if Iâd ever been to another show that felt so vibrant/alive/idk?
First, the biggest change made for the sake of clear storytelling on the stage is the addition of a framing device: the plot is conveyed to the audience through Edamuraâs (Miyata Toshiya) narration as he tells his story to a prosecutor after the events of LA Connection. The play opens where LA Connection ends with Edamura being questioned at a police station, where itâs clear that he has been attempting for hours to convince detectives to believe the team-confidence-wild-and-wacky-adventures â˘Â explanation as to how he came to be in possession of a bag stuffed with foreign currency. Detectives are fed up with him and ready to go berniewiththesteelchair.jpeg on his ass. Enter Kitaoji (Kato Ryo), an elite prosecutor who seems to be on track to become attorney general, although it is unclear to those at the police station why he would take interest in Edamuraâs case.Â
Edamura is initially reluctant to open up to Kitaoji (Kato Ryo), certain that he wonât be believed, but after Kitaoji quotes from Shakunetsu (side note: I had no idea that in English Shakunetsu was turned into Die Hot which is an absolutely incredible pun and I really commend the translator), Edamura thinks Kitaoji might be just the person to believe him and help him to make amends to all those he had harmed through his life of fraud. Kitaoji encourages Edamura to start at the beginning and goes to eat a piece of candy, prompting Edamura to question, âWhat would you do if this simple piece of candy was sold for $5 million?â at which point he begins telling his story, transporting us first to a club in Hollywood where we are introduced to the plot with Sakura Magic and, more importantly, Laurent (Miya Rurika, goddess, dressed devastatingly in green), who is identified in quick succession as a French trader, an arrogant Don Juan, and the âbastard who got me into this mess.âÂ
Edamura bumbles through Laurentâs plot to build hype and clinch a deal with Cassano (Otani Ryosuke) by having Abby (Yamamoto Chihiro) âtestâ the âdrug,â while giving small asides to Kitaoji to explain the main players and reveal to him that this is all a con job, but when Edamura is called to sign the contract to supply Cassano with the drug for $5 million, he flips out, pulls Salazarâs (Mikami Ichiro) gun, and flees the club, without the excuse of believing that he had taken drugs as he did in the anime. It is also not at this point that Edamura makes the connection between Laurent and Kudo and realizes that heâs been set up (Miyata!Edamura is overall a bit less perceptive than Kobayashi!Edamura, as we shall see, although I think this was a function of simplifying aspects of the charactersâ interactions for the sake of clarity for the stage).Â
Kitaoji pops in and out of the story from this point, donning different costumes (an unhoused person, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Razzie from the Shakunetsu series, etc.) to illustrate different aspects of the main charactersâ conversations, and he serves as a way to get into Edamameâs head, allowing him to express what he is thinking and feeling as events in the story play out. It is in the metanarrative that we get some of these more comedic scenes, as well as additional insight into Edamuraâs character as he grapples with his own identity as a scam artist and the son of a child trafficker.
After escaping Cassanoâs henchmen outside the club, Edamura rejoins Kitaoji to ask if heâs following the story so far, which of course he is not (lol), so Edamura dives into how he met Laurent and came to be in LA. From here we flashback three days, joining Edamura and Kudo (Fukumoto Shinichi) in Asakusa as they spy Laurent as a potential mark. Edamura pulls the wallet-switch trick, and this scene generally follows the anime, although parts, such as the scenes showing Edamura selling water filters and Edamura and Kudo being raided by what seems to be the police, have been cut. After realizing that Laurent pickpocketed him and saw through his grift, Edamura quickly follows and catches him as he is about to depart in a cab to the airport. Just a moment to talk about this cab because it was such a cute, clever idea; it was really just a little push car driven by one of the supporting cast, and it can be disconnected in the middle, so as the driver pulls off, the back seat can be left behind, allowing the audience to watch Laurent and Edamuraâs conversation as they are taken to the airport.Â
Similarly to the anime, the successive scenes are nominally delivered in English, so Edamura switches to a dialect of Japanese to represent his accented English, which I mention only because Miyata discussed Edamuraâs code switching with Kobayashi (Edamuraâs Japanese voice actor) in an interview in vol. 51 of Stage Square and how he was concerned that he might confuse Standard Japanese and the dialect during scenes where he has to go back and forth quickly. Kobayashi reassured him that as he got into the character of Edamura Miyata would naturally fall into dialect whenever speaking to Laurent and Abby, and Iâm very biased, buuuttttt throughout the run of the show, Miyata performed this beautifully, and as someone who for several years lived in the Tohoku region, the dialect of which Edamuraâs accent reminded me of, his accent made me really nostalgic.Â
Anywayyyyyy
After Laurent and Edamura bet on the outcome of Laurentâs upcoming âbusiness negotiationsâ and itâs agreed that they will travel to LA together, the opening theme plays, the main cast is introduced, with Edamura running up and down the set to give a sense of action, the title in massive letters is lowered onto the stage, and we rejoin the main plot with Edamura trying to elude Cassanoâs gang on the streets of LA by hiding behind the title. The supporting cast gives us some great background color as like random people in LA, like weâve got some girls with Starbucks cups, some people breakdancing while simultaneously mugging a Dodgers fan, a skateboarder shouting âSTREETâ...for some reason. Perfect encapsulation of America *chefâs kiss*
Laurent finds Edamura and tells him to come home because heâs a good boy (đł), and Edamura is then introduced to Abby who, just as in the anime, kicks and knocks him out, after which they collect him and take him to an upscale hotel where Cynthia/Paula Dickens (Senna Ayase) is performing as a jazz singer. Laurent greets her briefly, but we donât properly get introduced to her character until a later, very frustrating scene, but Iâm not going to get started on that yet (itâs not her thatâs frustrating, but itâs how they chose to have her and Edamura meet, but anyway weâll get there). She sings âSummertime,â and itâs a lovely performance; all of her acting choices are very clearly informed by her experience in Takarazuka - she has these really dynamic, almost over-the-top movements and she uses that to her advantage to be one of the more comedic actors - and itâs really entertaining to watch.
Laurent orders them drinks; Edamura has something pink in a little martini glass, and he splutters when he tries to take a sip because he canât handle his alcohol, which makes Laurent laugh, giving a lot of credence to Laurentâs statement soon after that he derives a lot of pleasure out of toying with naive boys like Edamura who pretend to be tougher than they really are. Thereâs also some funny adlib with Abby at this point where she gets brought different plates of food like fake fruit on one day and a tower of donuts on another. Laurent explains who Cassano is and the plan to defraud him and gives Edamura a notebook with a fabricated recipe for Sakura Magic, so the notebook is not part of what Edamura prepares himself when he goes later to get himself captured by Cassano to negotiate with him. Edamura has a couple of outbursts accusing Laurent and Abby of putting on airs, pretending to be carrying out justice, repeatedly interrupting the band who give him dirty looks and Shi-won, dressed as one of the saxophonists, loudly blows the saxophone back at him, and this prompts Laurent to be like nah weâre getting too much attention here letâs continue this back at the hotel.Â
The hotel scene is fairly similar to the anime, but once Edamura is left alone, we get the first instance of him thinking about his family as he reflect on what Laurent had to say about how people donât always believe the truth that is in front of them as they would rather believe whatever is most convenient. He flashes back to his family going home together after his father finished a case (the hotel room is on the second floor with his mom and dad entering on the stage level; the younger version of Edamura is done in voice over), and of course they seem like a happy family, although itâs interesting that what his dad has to say about ethics was cut from the script. The scene focuses more on Edamura idolizing his father as a great lawyer.
Okay, so weâve finally come to the scene I absolutely hated and did not think was necessary, after Edamura leaves the hotel room. He is approached by three unhoused persons, one of whom he at first thinks is Kitaoji coming to interrupt the narrative again, but he soon realizes that they are âreal homeless.â It was really just a disgusting, cruel stereotype; one of them is playing with a rat they found, another is acting like a junkie, and the ringleader is trying to get money off of him because they havenât eaten in three days and then they steal his little Toyotomi Hideyoshi figurine and play keepaway with it and donât stop until Cynthia/Paula Dickens (at this point sheâs Paula tho so Iâm going to refer to her that way) enters and is like knock it off. So thatâs how they meet. Cool. They could easily have come up with something else and they just didnât.
But, anyway, since he got his figurine back, he explains to Paula that his hobby is collecting capsule toys, and during his explanation, a gacha machine is projected up on the stage, out of which comes Kitaoji dressed as Toyotomi, followed by a bunch of other figures from Japanese history. This part always got a pretty good laugh out of the audience, and I think it was a pretty cute way to stage it. Paula insists they go to dinner together, so she can hear more about Toyotomi, and the capsule toy figurines all follow to a diner (serving âbreadfastâ 24hrs lol) where Shi-won is dressed as someone named Ricardo. The figurines all start to get drunk, while âRicardoâ fixes Edamura and Paula some tacos; meanwhile Edamura explains that Toyotomi began as a simple peasant, but because of his hard work and study, he was able to climb all the way to the top and unite all of Japan as a powerful lord.Â
Edamura asks why she decided to help him before and he despairs that he must seem like a beaten dog, but she explains that while she might seem confident, she faces tremendous anxiety getting on stage every day, particularly as she wants to make it big as a performer but canât expect to get the attention of a label just because she can sing a bit. (In the background, Francis Xavier is completely sloshed and ends up drinking with Ricardo) Edamura suggests that she take inspiration from Toyotomi as someone who was able to trick even his enemies into working with him and represent herself as someone more important than she is to get music producers onto her side. She seems fired up by this proposal, and she says that sheâll follow the example of Toyotomi, âJapanâs best confidence man,â which gives Edamura his own motivation to get back to trying to win the bet with Laurent. He asks Paula to wish him good luck and runs off, and we get the first dance scene with Edamura and a number of samurai as he builds up to confronting Cassano. The scene ends with him running into a video shop, presumably to rent Cassanoâs movies.
Laurent and Abby are called to Cassanoâs mansion - they argue if Edamura is capable of pulling off a job like this, although Laurent insists that he has a natural talent - but they are certain that he must be dead when they hear from Salazar that Edamura was taken into their custody at the airport trying to run. However, Edamura bursts onto the scene, dressed in a new Hawaiian shirt, and at this point, Miyata looks as though he has been in a swimming pool, but itâs just sweat lmao. Cassano informs them that heâs made a new deal with Edamura for $10 million, and when they ask how, we get a flashback showing how he got onto Cassanoâs good side by praising Shakunetsu with Kitaoji, as Razzie, acting out scenes from the Shakunetsu movies on the second floor of the stage. Whenever Cassano hugs Edamura in these scenes, it was really funny because his jacket would get just absolutely covered in Miyataâs sweat just ugh gross lolÂ
Cassanoâs accountant joins them and they play out the whole bit about confirming Edamuraâs credentials as a pharmaceutical scientist, at which point Edamura finally realizes that Kudo is working with Laurent, when he calls Kudo to thank him for deceiving Cassanoâs attorneys. After Cassano has confirmed Edamuraâs identity, he takes the crew to his factory and insists that Edamura make Sakura Magic for them right there and then so that they can be sure to properly replicate his recipe. She does this the whole play, but particularly during this scene, you can really see how well Miya Rurika portrays Laurent as always calm and and in control before Edamura but as quietly losing his shit whenever he feels like theyâve been backed into a corner, and we also get some very cute like Laurent clearly being exasperated with Edamura but the two of them starting to be able to play off one another as they convince Cassano that the factory isnât up to snuff for making Sakura Magic.Â
They have to clear out because they hear someone coming, but Cassano promises that he will build a new laboratory for Edamura and entrusts his care to Salazar. The police bust in after everyone has left; Anderson does the absolute most to show off to everyone that heâs properly securing the scene, but heâs clearly relieved that Cassano slipped through their fingers once again oh my how does this keep happening oh well better luck next time. We get a proper introduction to Paula and Shi-won as members of the FBI who have come to investigate Laurent and his organization (Paula has changed into this beautifully tailored brown tweed pantsuit and she pulls it off so well), and Paula threatens to expose Andersonâs connections to Cassano if he doesnât follow her lead.
After the scene in the factory, we return to the present in the interrogation room with Kitaoji and Edamura. Detectives bring Kitaoji additional files on Edamura, asking if the prosecutor has heard of the attorney Ozaki. They inform him that Edamura is Ozakiâs son, and Kitaoji is a bit shocked; he leaves, saying that he will review the files. The detectives collect the money before exiting the room, but not without getting in a dig at Edamura, telling him that he clearly takes after his father. Edamura is stricken by this statement, and the act ends with Edamura battling with this internal conflict.Â
I donât think anyone would want to read all of this, but if you have, thank you so much. I hope some of it at least was interesting or informative. Iâm going to end there for now, as Iâve already gone on for too long, and Iâll finish writing up the second act in another post.
#it's too long i'm sorry lmao#i have not edited this so sorry as well if there are mistakes#great pretender

Romance with Mr. Right...hand Man Ch. 1
A/N: This is just a fanfic I am starting following Hideyoshi's romantic route ending. I hope it's something everyone can enjoy! This will be a multi-chapter fic and I'll be bouncing between it and my Shingen fic. I will hopefully be moving my Nobunaga and Mitsuhide fics over here from fanfiction as well soon.
Chapter 1
I found myself sitting in front of Nobunaga on his horse. His arms were on either side of me, holding the reins. We were in an open field outside of Azuchi. It had been a little over a year since I had traveled through time and been living in the Sengoku with the Oda forces.
Mitsuhide and Masamune were on either side of us. We had a small portion of the Oda army behind us. On the opposite side of the field at the head of his own army was the love of my life, Hideyoshi. He was flanked by Ieyasu and Mitsunari, with their own portion of the Oda forces behind them.
I can't believe I agreed to go along with this. Granted it's not like I was truly given a choice in the matter. I thought to myself.
"You seem rather tense, Ava." Nobunaga observed, though there was a smile on his face.
"Oh, you know, just wondering why this is all necessary?" I replied, my tone a bit disgruntled.
Nobunaga grinned at me. "It is the only way." He answered.
I let out a sigh as I turned to look at Hideyoshi across the field. We were close enough I could see the determined look on his face and noticed when he leaned over to discuss something with Mitsunari or Ieyasu, but we weren't close enough for me to hear what was being said.
"Ava, aren't you the least bit curious as to how determined Hideyoshi is about all of this?" Mitsuhide asked, his tone teasing. "What lengths he will go to?"
"I would think you would be excited that he was willing to do this in the first place." Masamune added.
"I mean...it is definitely impressive." I replied. "But I also know how much he's going to be hating this the entire time."
"Don't worry, this was my idea. I will hold nothing against him when this is over." Nobunaga replied.
"The rest of us won't ever let him live it down though." Masamune replied grinning. "That is assuming none of us run off with the prize."
I rolled my eyes and sighed once again. My thoughts then turned to the events that led us to where we all stood right now.
Three days ago...
I was going around the room of the great hall, carrying a bottle of sake and pouring for everyone. We were having a banquet to celebrate the anniversary of Nobunaga surviving the Hono-ji incident.
"Ava." Nobunaga had said just as I was about to go join Hideyoshi.
"Uh...yeah?" I asked. "Were you needing a refill?"
"I would not say no." Nobunaga replied. "But you should also allow me to pour for you. This banquet is as much about celebrating you as it is me."
"I don't..." I began to protest.
"Without you saving me that night, we would not all be here now. So, come drink with me a moment." He said.
"Uh...alright." I reluctantly agreed. I wanted to go be with Hideyoshi, but I knew that even he would tell me I had better get up there to follow Nobunaga's orders. Hideyoshi was basically the president of the Nobunaga fan club.
I made my way up to the dais and sat by Nobunaga and filled his cup. He handed me another one and then poured for me. "Thank you." I said.
"You have earned it and proven yourself." He told me. "This haori coat you made is excellent as well. I commend your work."
I couldn't help but to smile. I always felt proud when my work was complimented. "Thank you." He had commissioned the haori from me a couple of weeks ago and I had put a lot of work into it.
"You know, you should share a drink with the rest of us." Masamune spoke up. "We want to celebrate the brave lass who saved our lord as well."
"Why do you always say we like you're including me?" Ieyasu grumbled.
"Because you're just as happy to have Ava around as the rest of us, lad." Masamune replied.
So, I ended up not getting to go join Hideyoshi and drinking with everyone. I planned for just one drink with each of them and then I would join Hideyoshi. Hopefully I could catch Nobunaga in a good enough mood that I'd be able to go home with Hideyoshi to his manor tonight.
What I did not realize at the time, was that everyone was enjoying the game they had stared. They were playing keep away with me and Hideyoshi. What I was also unaware of, was that Mitsuhide had manipulated Hideyoshi into drinking quite a bit more than he normally would. Hideyoshi was not the most composed drunk. When drinking he would speak much more freely than normal.
"Alright, Ava, it is my turn to share a drink with you." Mitsuhide said, taking my hand and pulling me to sit beside him.
"Only one drink." I said, remembering the last time I had drank with Mitsuhide. It was seriously the worst hangover the next day.
Mitsuhide grinned at me. "Why, my dear little seamstress, are you worried about what will happen if you drink with me?"
"I am not wanting the hangover from hell again." I replied. "Your alcohol tolerance isn't human."
"What if I promise to take it easy on you?" Mitsuhide asked, leaning in close.
"That's it!"
I jumped at the sound of Hideyoshi's voice. He was then coming over to sit beside me, wrapping an arm around me and pulling me close. "Hideyoshi?" I asked, looking up at him.
"I will not have the lot of you taking all of Ava's time. I will not stand for this anymore." Hideyoshi boldly declared.
"Are you challenging us for our dear little sister?" Mitsuhide asked, his voice teasing.
"As the man who loves her, yes I am." Hideyoshi answered. "And not just tonight. I am going insane not having her by my side every night."
My breath caught in my throat as I looked up at the man I loved. "Hideyoshi...what...are you saying?" I asked.
Those warm golden eyes focused on me. "Ava, I can't stand the thought of another night not having you come home with me. I want you to live with me and to be my wife."
I felt the tears stinging my eyes and the smile tugging my lips. "Oh...Hideyoshi!"
"That is quite the bold declaration, Hideyoshi." Nobunaga's deep voice came from his seat.
We all turned to look at him. "It is the truth." Hideyoshi replied. "If Ava will have me, I want to take her home and make her my wife."
"Have you forgotten, Hideyoshi?" Nobunaga replied, an amused smile on his face.
"My...Lord?" Hideyoshi asked.
"Ava is my treasured little sister." Nobunaga answered. "You truly intend to take her from me?"
"I...Lord Nobunaga...it's already been too long. I can't take it another day." Hideyoshi replied, looking Nobunaga in the eye.
Holy cats! He's...he's actually challenging Nobunaga for me?! I felt a swirl of conflicting emotions in my chest at this moment.
"You believe you are the best man for her?" Nobunaga asked.
"I will do everything to see to her happiness." Hideyoshi answered.
"How far are you willing to go for Ava?" Nobunaga asked.
"Uh...what...what are you trying to say, my lord?" Hideyoshi asked, confused.
"You have challenged me for her. You've made quite a bold declaration, Hideyoshi." Nobunaga replied. "Would you fight for her?"
"What kind of question is that? Of course I would." Hideyoshi answered.
Nobunaga's grin became devilish at this. "Then it is settled."
"What exactly is settled, Nobunaga?" I found myself asking. Is he agreeing to letting me finally move in with Hideyoshi...and then us planning our wedding? I thought with cautious excitement.
"Hideyoshi, you will prove your resolve to take my precious little sister from me." Nobunaga declared. "In three days time, I will have the perfect challenge for you."
"You name it and I will meet the challenge." Hideyoshi declared.
"You shall face me in battle." Nobunaga declared.
I am pretty sure my jaw hit the floor as Hideyoshi's eyes widened. "L-lord Nobunaga?"
"If you truly wish to make Ava your wife, you shall face me in battle." Nobunaga repeated. "We will work out the details over the next few days."
I looked at Hideyoshi. I half expected him to back down at the thought of fighting Nobunaga. There's no way...right? I should probably say something. Take it off of Hideyoshi. I thought, though I couldn't deny that a part of me was holding back, hoping he would respond and accept the challenge. "Nobunaga, come on, this is a bit ridiculous. Besides, you didn't wait to hear my answer. You spoke up before I really had the chance."
"Because I already know your answer." Nobunaga replied. "But that is not what is important here. Hideyoshi, will you fight for Ava?"
Hideyoshi's eyes met mine. He gave me a smile and then turned to Nobunaga, determination set on his face. "Alright, if that's what it takes, then yes, I will face you in battle, my lord."
A devilishly gleeful smile came to Nobunaga's face. "Good. I look forward to this."
Now...
And that was the story of how we ended up here. The details had been worked out that Hideyoshi would face Nobunaga in battle essentially for my hand in marriage. Nobunaga had declared that Ieyasu and Mitsunari would be Hideyoshi's subordinates in the battle, while Mitsuhide and Masamune were his to command.
The rules were relatively simple. It was similar to an actual fight, but the goal was not that anyone would be hurt. Or only minor injuries were allowed. Hideyoshi was to command his forces in an effort to take me from Nobunaga. He literally had to physically take me from Nobunaga and run off with me.
Of course this meant that he would have to fight Nobunaga and more than likely try to knock him off of his horse or something. I knew that is that happened, Hideyoshi would be devastated at having caused any injury no matter how minor to Nobunaga. I knew he would also be terrified of hurting me in the process.
"Don't worry little mouse, no one will get hurt." Mitsuhide told me from his place beside Nobunaga and me. "Especially you. You are our most precious little sister after all."
I found myself rolling my eyes once again.
"I am very much looking forward to this." Nobunaga said, smiling like a little kid.
"Why exactly is that?" I asked.
"To see exactly how Hideyoshi plans to pull this off." He answered. "It has been quite amusing to see him change since being with you."
I looked up at the man whose arms I was currently trapped in. I raised a brow at him. "I don't think I've really changed him that much." I replied.
"He values his life now." Nobunaga replied. "He is no longer willing to throw it away. That is something I am happy to finally see."
"What else are you hoping to see today?" I asked.
Nobunaga smiled. "I am just looking to have a bit of amusement today." He answered, but I could tell that that wasn't the truth. Though I am not sure what he was really searching for, I was certain that it was more than amusement. Something told me that Nobunaga really did care about Hideyoshi and this was somehow his way of proving a point or trying to get Hideyoshi to learn something new.
It was a few moments later that a the war cries sounded. Horses and soldiers from both sides took off. I found myself gripping the saddle to keep steady as Nobunaga kicked our horse into a run. I was preparing myself to be able to jump off and into Hideyoshi's arms at a moment's notice. I didn't want him to have to do all of the work when it came to this mock battle. I also wanted to try and make this as easy on him as possible. I knew what Nobunaga meant to him. So the fact that he was willing to participate in this mock battle was major and showed how much he truly loved me. Even if it was something he agreed to when he was drunk.
I hope this ends well. I thought as I kept my eyes open and waited for my opportunity. Though you know this is the stuff most girls dream of...I mean I literally have men fighting over me right now. I couldn't help the rueful smile that came to my lips at that thought. Though no matter who the victor in this mock battle is, my heart will always be Hideyoshi's.

Top Famous Japanese Samurai Names And History
The famous samurai is a famous character in Japanese culture. Samurai have been around for centuries and they are often the center of attention in many films, novels, and video games that are set during this time period. However, not everyone knows who some of these famous samurai were or what their stories entail. This article will list some famous samurai names and give you an overview of their history with the hope that it will help you get to know Japan's most famous warriors better!
There are many great samurai warriors in the Japanese history, such as Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. But there are other greatest to learn about Miyamoto Musashi or Tomoe Gozen - a fearsome female Samurai of Japan.
The samurai were a very well respected and powerful group of people. They followed the bushido code which is an honor-bound set of rules that prescribes how to live as a warrior, emphasizing practices such as martial arts mastery, integrity in life and death; courage; respect for one's opponents or superiors regardless of rank or social status (read more here). The Meiji Revolution abolished their power but they still had some influence on Japan way into present day because many became businessmen, professionals etc., while others helped shape Japanese culture!
If you are looking to learn more about samurai fighting styles, read this "What Type Of Martial Arts Did The Japanese Samurai Use?"
Here are a list of famous Japanese samurai names and history:
 1) Miyamoto Musashi (1584 â 1645)
(Source, 1)
Born in 1584, Myamoto Mushashi was a famous and accomplished soldier, swordsman, and artist. When he was on the losing side of Battle Sekigahara in 1600 then he became ronin samurai which meant that his lord no longer recognized him as an official member of their army because they had lost this battle.
Miyamoto Musashi was a Japanese swordsman and philosopher who developed the two-sword technique known as nito ichi ryu. His reputation is so great that he has been referred to by other names, including kensai meaning sword saint or satsujin shoji which means killing machine in English.
He had many duels against rivals but his most famous fight occurred on an island with Saski Kojiro - ending quickly when Miyamato struck him over the head with a wooden sword after this duel, he retired from society despite teaching select students and helping suppress rebellions such as Shimabara of 1637.
Myamoto Mushashi was a great painter and author of the famous Book of Five Rings. He also wrote many other books on his martial art, philosophies, or sumi-e style paintings as well as bird paintings which are renowned in particular for Shrike Perched on Withered Branch (Kobokumeikakuzu) and Wild Geese Among Reeds (Rozanzu).
Myamoto Mushashi is most famously known for being an influential Japanese warrior who mastered multiple forms of combat from different cultures such as kenjutsu to jujitsu.
 2) Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537 â 1598)
(Source, 2)
Toyotomi Hideyoshi lived from 1536/37 to 1598 and served as chief Imperial minister. He helped finish to 16th-century unification of Japan, helping create the country we know today.
Born a peasant in Azumato Province (modern day Nagoya), Toyotomi Hideyoshi left home when he was still a boy and became page at one feudal lord's mansion where he met Oda Nobunaga who would become his mentor for life - or so it seemed until this great man rose through ranks becoming samurai under him before joining armies fighting other clans trying unify all of Japan with their own rule into what you see now on your map.
Hideyoshi, the man who would later build a castle in Osaka and become one of key figures in Japanâs unified government. He clashed with Tokugawa Ieyasu during Nobunaga's attempt to unify the country but their alliance remained strong. Hideyoshi was then appointed as an important minister by his lord Toyotomi Otomo so that he could continue pacifying regions without conflict from other lords like Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi was responsible for solidifying the caste restrictions that marked Tokugawa Japan. Farmers, merchants and monks were forbidden from taking up arms while warriors as well as artisans, farmers and tradesmen could only be found in their own areas of towns or villages due to strict segregation enforced by law.
 3) Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543 â 1616)
(Source, 3)
The son of a local lord, Matsudaira Takechiyo was born in 1542. He came into his own during the era when Japan's civil war and feuding lords left it mired with violence and death.
After being sent to the Imagawa clan at four-years old, Ieyasu was raised with education in their court for 15 years. In 1567 he finally took over his familyâs position and changed his name to Tokugawa after returning home from a life of exile.
He had a successful military career and ran his own town in the east of Japan. He was given governance over Edo where he established Tokyo, transforming it into what we know today as an international city with millions living there.
After the unfortunate death of his ally Toyotomi Hideyoshi, civil war broke out again. Ieyasu won the war and gained the title of shogun, becoming a military governor in Japan as well as its ruler with few limits on power. So began Tokugawa's rule over all but name for what would be three centuries to come until he passed away at age 80 in 1616 after having been ill for months beforehand due to illness or old age is not precisely known.
His mausoleum at Nikko has become one of most important shrines and was commissioned by Shogun himself from an artist who had taken up residence near Nagasaki during his time there trading with foreign merchants while simultaneously keeping firm control over Christianity-dominating Europe.
 4) Oda Nobunaga (1534 â 1582)
(Source, 4)
Oda Nobunaga's story is the source of many others, but itâs well worth knowing on its own. Born in 1534 and living through a deeply fractured Japan where warlords frequently clashed against one another often causing much death and destruction before he came to power, Oda nobunaga was viewed by some as both an oppressive tyrant and a national savior.
Nobunaga was an eccentric figure. When his father died and left him to take care of the familyâs land, he took it with a strange sense of entitlement, associating freely with peasants below their station as well as shunning many traditions that were important under feudalism such how wearing funeral garb at one's own elaborate burial rites. Nobunaga would also break protocol in other areas like when Hirate Masahide committed suicide after being offended by Nobuna ga during said ceremony--the first time anyone had ever done so--- but this event seemed to shock into reality for the young boy who then went on to unite Japan through force instead of diplomacy or succession rights established within Yamato clan itself .
With the help of a few uncles, Nobunaga gained control over his land. He was not in power for long before he faced challenges from one brother and later another that only ended when both were killed by him. All of this happened while other feudal lords sought their own place among them.
The legacy of Nobunaga led to Tokugawa Ieyasu and his allies' unified, more stable Japan. This was because Nobunaga died before he could unite all of the country with a single government.
 5) Kusunoki Masashige (1294 â 1336)
(Source, 5)
When Kusunoki Masashige was born in 1294, he had already been indoctrinated into the Akuto. This group of samurai banded together to form a new government that did not belong to the present regime and despised how under-rewarded they were for their actions fighting against Mongolia. A man with such passion would be destined for greatness - and so it is no surprise when one learns about his early life as an active member of this organization after being raised by parents who belonged themselves.
The Emperor, Go-daigo (96th emperor of Japan) was forced to flee when his plot for take down the government was revealed. He found refuge at Mt. Kasagi in south Kyoto and declared war on the Government who were against him because he wanted revenge after what they did to him years ago which is why he's been plotting this since then. Masashige pledged loyalty towards GOdaijo as one of first people who would help overthrow those cruel men from power so that no more innocent lives are lost just like how many others had died before them too due to their selfish behavior!
The soldiers of Kusunoki Masashige were not like other warriors. They didn't wear fine armor or swords, but they threw rocks and poured boiling water on those who tried to assault their castle in Kawachi! With the tide turning against them after news of the Emperor's arrest, he opted to burn down his castle and flee without ever being captured by government troops.
Masashige rallied his men and 1,000 locals in Osaka. The government responded in force by laying siege to the small army cutting off their supply lines but Masashige anticipated this and created a secret path for supplies that led to victory as starving forces instead starved with no new provisions from outside sources coming into play which also prompted Emperor Go-Daigo's return who then lead renewed efforts against the Shogun regime.
The samurai had been shortchanged and did not receive the land that they so desperately needed to get them out of poverty. Another rebellion rose in Kysusu, led by Ashikaga Takauji, whom Masashige was able to escape with after he saved his life during this time period.
Masashige encouraged the emperor to make peace, but he refused. He then tried to walk the Emperor into fleeing into exile, but that was refused as well. In the end Masashige led an army with a slim hope for victory against Ashikagaâs forces of 200,000; his own were 899 men strong and lost many on their journey in battle when they finally met near Osaka by 1336 AD where he succeeded suicide after being outnumbered so greatly..
Masahide's devotion and cunning have made him a very popular samurai hero especially within his native city-state (Osaka).
 6) Hattori Hanzo (1542 â 1597)
Hattori Hanzo was a fearless warrior who performed many feats in service of the Tokugawa clan, including rescuing Tokugawa Ieyasu's daughter from a castle and laying siege to another. Born around 152 AD, he served until his death at 55- some sources state that this happened suddenly while hunting or died during battle with pirates on an island off the coast of Kyushu.
 7) Sanada Yukimura (1567 â 1615)
Yukimura was born in 1567 and was known as A Hero who may appear once in a hundred yearsâ and âCrimson Demon of War. His clan, the Sanada, caught up with wars between Oda Nobunaga forcing themselves to fight on different sides when Tokugawa took power after his death. Yukimura fought valiantly against them during Winter Siege at Osaka Castle causing many losses for enemy forces while he himself had smaller force size than that of enemies there.
I think you're tired of hearing about how Yukimura died, but in case it's not clear: he was fighting against Tokugawa forces and they managed to get him. The siege on Osaka castle went well for a while with him leading his troops during the battle until he finally conceded defeat after being completely outmatched by an enemy force that vastly outnumbered them at nearly 10-1 odds.
The defender of Osaka, exhausted and low on supplies but still as formidable as ever. Yukimura Sanada was a powerful general in the late Sengoku period who defended Osaka Castle against overwhelming odds before finally capitulating to Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces after months' worth of bitter fighting.
This heroic warrior is said to have made one last plea with his enemies: "I am Sanada Nobushige."
 8) Uesugi Kenshin (1530 â 1578)
A long time ago, a young man named Nagao Torachiyo led an army in the fight against Takeda Shingen. He was born to be one of Japan's most powerful warriors and leaders when he changed his last name as refuge for Uesugi Norimasa who then adopted him as his son.
After his power had reached its peak, the mighty Uesugi sought to overthrow one of Japan's most powerful lords. He bravely faced all odds but unfortunately died before he could start a battle with Oda Nodabunaga.
 9) Takeda Shingen (1521 â 1573)
(Source, 9)
Takeda Shingen, a 1521-born feudal lord of Shinano Province and one of the warlords who struggled for power over the valuable Kanto Plain in eastern central Honshu. He is best known for his series of battles with another famous warrior by Uesugi Kenshin that became legendary. The two fierce commanders clashed fairly indecisively but cemented Takeda's influence as he became one of the most powerful military leaders in region.
He was most feared by Oda Nodabunaga, and after defeating an army led by Ieyasu he began to make inroads into Tokugawa territory. A year following his victory over the armies of both men, Takeda died at age 39. To this day many people celebrate him as a genius who had skills that should be celebrated throughout all Japan due to the film Kagemusha (Shadow Warrior) directed by Kurosawa Akira being created about him.
 10) Date Masamune (1567 â 1636)
Date Masamune was an incredible tactician who led the Date clan to power. He had a remarkable ability for warfare, earning him such nicknames as "One-Eyed Dragon of Ĺshu". At one point he broke alliances and conquered land in his quest to hunt down a defected vassal from Ashina clan. After this campaign, many battles ensued against neighboring clans.
Tokugawa Ieyasu showed no fear when he was forced to choose a side during the Tokugawa-Toyotomi civil war, but once his overlord Hideyoshi died and left him with nothing. A man of great character, he eventually took up arms on behalf of Tokugawa's faction after finding that there was not enough food for both himself and the people in his domain. He then lead them all to an unexplored location which would grow into Sendai City thanks largely due to its proximity from fishing waters--an ideal place for those who are hungry or need work!
Masamune was known for his great sympathy for the Christian population growing in Japan, only reluctantly allowing their persecution in his domain when Ieyasu outlawed Christianity. It is because of Masamune's patronage that there are now a small community of Japanese descendants living in Spain as they fled to escape from religious prosecution on home soil.
Masamune was a powerful samurai who changed the political and cultural landscape of Japan forever. He has been represented in many media that chronicle both real and imagined versions of his life, but this is only scratching the surface to how influential he really was!
 11) Honda Tadakatsu (1548- 1610)
(Source, 11)
Honda Tadakatsu was a loyal servant of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and his contributions aided the success of countless battles. Perhaps being most noted for successfully leading evacuating troops from advancing Takeda forces before their decisive clash in 1584 during the Komaki Campaign, he would also go on to have great successes like breaking through an enemy's defensive line at Nagashino Castle with only 2 outposts left standing by nightfall after engaging them all day long.
His courage is said to have so impressed Toyotomi Hideyoshi, his foe in that battle, that he ordered a general ceasefire. Ieyasu was left with only a few troops but rode out and challenged the vast enemy host himself-and won! He continued to fight for Ieyasu through many battles and campaigns including Sekigahara where future shogun Tokugawa finally defeated him. It's hard not be inspired by this brave samurai who died protecting his lord at age 106 after serving him faithfully all those years ago.
12) Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159 â 1189)
Yoshitsune was born in 1159, and is one of the most famous samurai's to have ever lived. He fought alongside his half-brother during Genpei War that led him on a path towards fame as he helped consolidate power with both humans and gods alike. Yoshitsune faced many challenges before embarking on this journey such as death at age 10 when overthrowing an attempted coup by court nobles leaded by Minamoto no Yoritomo who were seeking revenge for their father being killed from illness. It wasn't all bad though because after escaping execution himself thanks to monks taking care of him while residing within Kurama Temple.
Yoshitsune is a skilled samurai, the most respected and talented of his time. He took up arms against those who would take what belonged to him - that which was rightfully his by law. Against all odds he won every battle, liberating Japan from tyranny in the process as well as freeing it for himself following so many years spent without power or authority over anything at all."
Yoshitsune fell out of political favor when his brother Yoritomo schemed to end his growing power and forced him to flee Kyoto. He found refuge with Fujiwara no Yasuhira, son of the childhood protector he cherished so much. However, under pressure from Yoshitsuneâs own brother-Yoritomo-he had a residence surrounded where Yoshitsune was staying at the time; defeated all retainers that were fighting for their lord in order to escape alive; and finally committed suicide."
A tragic hero as depicted by Japanese culture who has been deeply revered over many centuries: it is an open question whether or not Genghis Khan could have succeeded if without them knowing about this man's life story beforehand!"
 13) Shimazu Yoshihisa (1533 â 1611)
One of the greatest leaders to ever live, Shimazu Yoshihisa was lord over Satsuma Province. Born in 1533 and died on March 5th 1611. He led his brothers uniting Kyushu which they claimed until Toyotomi Hideyoshi took it from them in 1600 but were defeated by him a few years later leading to their final years as Buddhist priests composing poetry that is cherished across Japan for its humility and skillful tactics!

Cue you and Sasuke jumping on tables, rolling on the floor, and swinging on the doorways đ
âHey dummies stop that, you are going to hurt yourselves!â (âÍ_âĚĽ)
Just as Yuki captured the two of you drunks in a headlock before you hurt each other or yourselves, Sasuke gives you a nod and you start tickling Yuki.âÂ
Once both of you are freed you run hand in hand with the friendly neighbourhood ninja to the garden | ( âĄâ˘)| (âá´ĽâĘ)
The two of you stood on opposite sides of the garden and started singing Sweet Caroline
âHands, Touching hands.â
âReaching out.â
âTouching me.â
âTouching you.â
âSweet Caroline, Bum bum bum.â
When the two of you are drunk any idea is a good idea, and at that moment slashing around in the fountain seemed like the best idea in the world
Cue both of you splashing and playing in the fountain
After a while the two of you got tired and decided to lay on the grass together and look up at the stars
You looked at you wrinkly fingers âHey, Sasuke I have a super serious question.â (â̿Ě̯âĚż Ěż)
âHow come only your fingers and toes get wrinkly in the shower, and nothing else does?â â _ â
Cue the two of you breaking out in laughter but then eventually passing out (/âăŽâ)/
Cue poor Yuki finding his two soaking wet drunk friends finally tired out on the grass
âGeeeez, when did I become the mom friend of the group.â (ďźä¸_ä¸)
Yukimura
You and Yuki loved to compete with each other and out drinking each other at banquets was no exception
âI bet I could beat you in an arm-wrestling match.â ( â _ â )
âOi dummy, I am like twice your size there is nooo way you would win.â
You beat him ・ââżâ・
âBest out of three.â (ďźä¸_ä¸)
You beat him again (ââżââż)
Sasuke laughing in the background cause he knew you were cheating
Yuki puts you into a headlock and starts giving you a noogieÂ
This turns into a full-blown wrestling match- âHey dummy didnât your mom ever teach you how to act like a lady.â á(ââ¸âźâś)á
Before Yukimura can sulk about his defeat you are already pulling him up and dragging him to the dance floor
âLetâs dance.â (~ËâžË)~
You break out in laughter at Yukiâs, awkward, clumsy movements, not that yours are any betterÂ
Yuki canât help but laugh at your robot dance (â§ââŚ)
At some point in the evening the two of you discuss the best prank to pull on Kenshin (âďžăŽďž)â â(ďžăŽďžâ)
Thatâs when Sasuke steps up to the plate to become the mom friend, I think its time to cut the two of you off ಠ_ŕ˛
âIâm not drunk MC, youâre drunk!!!!â (âŕşŮÍŕş)â
Cue you hopping on one leg in a circle
âSee would a drunk person be able to do this.âÂ

You and Yuki high five and then head to where the band is playing
âAre you thinking what Iâm thinkingâ you ask Yuki with the biggest brightest smile before exclaiming in union âKaraoke.â âŞ~ á(á)á
The two of you sing and dance the night away âŞ~ á(á)áâŞ~ á(á)á
Eventually the two of you passed out, Sasuke being the mom friend simply took a blankie and threw it over the two of you and left you in the banquet hall ರ_ರ
Mitsuhide
The night started off super quiet with you and Mitsu sitting together and sipping on your drinks (áŚËâŁËáŚ)
Mitsu soon came to discover you were quite the rowdy troublesome drunk
(â̿Ě̯âĚż Ěż)
He smiled, as during your card game with him, you would start randomly singing, to throw him off his game ă˝(^ă^)ă
You also became x2 as dramatic (ďžâăŽâ)ďž*:シďžâ§ â§ďžď˝Ľ: *
Your usual sore loser self couldnât handle losing another card game
(ăಠçಠ)ă彥âťââť
As the night progressed you got up to go dance with Masamune
Mitus kept a very very close eye on his little mouse  â _ â
At some point in the night he lost track of you
He finally spotted you playing go with Nobunaga (ĘâżĘ)
He started getting super jelly ಠ~ŕ˛
He neared you and his lord and his eyes widened, the two of you were playing strip go (âŻÎâŻâĽ)
âI think its time to cut you off little mouse.â  (ďžĎďž;)
âNo Mitsu Iâm a strong independent womanâ á(ââ¸âźâś)á
âDearest me, It seems I will just have to join in and win.â
The three of you play strip go until Nobunaga passes out with nothing but his underwear on, Mitsu breathed a sigh of relief this game was really getting out of hand (´ξď˝ďź)
Mitsu was the only one who still had all of his clothes on, and luckily for you, nothing too vital has been taken off
âIt would seem little mouse that we are the only two left, shall we continue this strange game back home?â (・ââżâ・)
Before you could even respond, he effortlessly picks you up and throws you over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes
âMiiitsuuuuu lemi dowwwwwwn.â âďźâ
âWe are almost home my feisty little mouseâ, Mitsuhide canât help but chuckle and shake his head at his drunk troublesome little mouse
Mitsuhide narrowed his eyes you have been quiet for way too long, âSeems like you finally tired yourself out little one.âÂ
He tucks you into bed and quickly changes into his sleepwear, by the time he gets back to the futon, he sees you sprawled out over the whole futon happily snoring away. (âżâ âżâ )
The next morning you wake up with a splitting headache, âuuuuugghhh what happened last night.â
Mitsu couldnât help but give you his classic sneki smile while replaying the events of the night for you in great detail. (âĄâżâĄâż)
âuuuuuuhggggg I cant believe I played strip go with the great Nobunaga.â
(*ă_<*)
Mitsuhide couldnât help but chuckle at his little mouse now profusely blushing and hiding her face in the pillow (/Ďďźź)
âIâm never drinking againâ, you tell yourself the lie everyone tells themselves after a fun drunken adventure (ă ̄Ď ̄ăă
Hideyoshi
You had a good buzz going, Nobunga had brought some fancy alcohol back from his trip to the Portuguese traders
You werenât interested at first, until u smelt what it was
Tequila! (â

Man you freaken loved that stuff, just one sip was enough to bring back countless memories of you and your gal pals, hitting the clubs, and having a good time ي(âá´â)Űś
You and Nobunaga were doing shot after shot (´ăťĎăť)ăŁçą
Finally, the two of you had convinced Hideyoshi to join, you handed him the shot of tequila and some lemon and salt, and before you knew it both of you had a good buzz going
You felt like dancing so you dragged Hideyoshi closer to the band so you could dance your heart out â(âoâ

Honestly, you were starting to feel hot in you fancy princess kimono, so you did what anyone would doÂ
You took that shit off ââ âż ââ
âOi, what do you think you are doingâ

(ďžĐ´ďžďź)
Hideyoshi was now blushing profusely trying to convince you to put the layers of clothing back on, you were now only wearing the last layer of clothing, and it was legit showing off your every curve (*ďžď˝°ďž)ă
âHey look, Hideyoshi, Mitsunari is trying to make tea.â (ââĎâ)â
As he turned his head to look you, snuck away 「(â
âĎâă)ä¸
You were now dancing on the table without a care in the worldÂ
ăž(ââ _â )ăâŞ
Well to be fair at this point it wasnât really dancing anymore, more like some weird zig-zag dance
You lost footing and before you knew it you were falling down
_(:3ăâ )_
You braced yourself to hit the ground but the fall never came
You opened your eyes and saw two very worried hazel eyes staring back at you (ă
ă

â)
âOkay, young lady I think thats enough alcohol and dancing for one night.â
âáâ
You and Hideyoshi had fallen in love but were still in the brother-sister zone
âYour not my dad, so donât tell me what to do.â ďźďżŁÎľďżŁďź
âNo I am not, but I am your brother and I am cutting you off.â ë_ë
âI donât want to be your sister anymore you stupid monkey, canât you see that I love you as more than just a brother.â â§ÂşÂˇ(Ë ËĚŁĚŁĚĽâËĚŁĚŁĚĽ )â§ÂşÂˇË
Hideyoshi was shookâŚ.. did you just say that you loved him (â_â;)
He wasnât sure if it was the alcohol or the sudden love confession, but he found himself leaning in for a kiss á(ăťďšăťá)
The next morning a very naked you, woke up with a hella headache
You heard a small snore next to you and turned around slowly only to find a Hideyoshi by your side ăâĐâăž
Thatâs when you felt a warm arm around your waist pulling you closer so that you were now flush against him (â âżâ âż)
Your eyes widened as you lifted the cover slightly to see that you were not the only one who was naked (âďźżâ)
Needless to say the two of you were most definitely not brother and sister anymore (ÂŹâżÂŹ)
Hope you enjoyed it, love! <3<3<3â¤đĽ

The Lovers of Nagahama (SLBP) brain dump/review/collected rants
Hideyoshi
Hideyoshi is a babe. My first SLBP love and never forgotten so I was excited that heâs in an event again 𼺠Also thank you Toshiie, my appreciation for you has gone up 1000%.
All in all a lovely little story and, for once, MC being all âwhat am I feeling?â makes sense. Until Kiyosu she pretty much only knew Toshiie and it makes sense sheâd have a little crush and mistake their affection built over years for the kind of grown-up love sheâs first experiencing after meeting Hideyoshi đ 15/10 (itâs Hideyoshi, donât expect me to have any objective opinion. Could have been higher but his need to double checks everything because he canât believe itâs true shaved some points off...)
Masanori
I was unsure whether to read it or nyoom through it for the prizes because the frown made me wonder if weâd have another Mitsunari on our hands, but friends told me it was a sweet story and I have to agree. Mature enough to take responsibility for when he acts immature and no unnecessary will they/wonât they, just a natural progression as two people who didnât know each other spend time together. Is this really a Voltage story? 8/10
Mitsunari
I never thought Iâd see the day I picked Manjunari over the story of someone I like but I want that dress and havenât changed my doll in 2 days đ
Iâm not happy with the characters implying Iâm Mitsunariâs ideal woman, brb crying in a corner while I tear up my manuscript (jokeâs on me, itâs a digital copy)...but lol at the smartest man of his age being so.dense. (How did Yoshitsugu hold it together?)
Even my little cold Ice Countess heart cannot take this storyline and this adorable AU version of the boy about to have his heart broken at any one moment đĽ˛đ I also feel a tiny bit sorry for MC having to deal with seeing what she wants knowing itâs meant for someone else...it was solved far too quickly tho, like...who is this dude and what has he done with the real Manjunari? 8/10
Yoshitsugu
Main story, please. I love a tragic canât-be-happy-because-of-this-thing boy, okay? Especially when they look like that. Do we need another one in SLBP? Probably not, I know thereâs plenty. Do I care? Of course not. Itâs SLBP, weâre here for the angst, if I wanted fluff Iâd be re-reading Be My Princess and My Sweet Bodyguard on loop.
Also Hideyoshiiiiiiii đ almost single-handedly making love happen for everyone but himself.
On a side note, how old is he supposed to be with that very Kojuro-like self-deprecating âat my ageâ thrown in in the finale? Donât they realise what those lines do to those of us who like our men twice our age and over? (Good job my current MS is Hotaru and the headcanon is spinning with Kenshin and Daddy)
10/10 (for drunk Sakon and Mitsunari and the butterfly)
Yes, yes we do...
It feels so weird to be posting this and then going to bed at a reasonable hour instead of grinding for the chibi until 4am đ
this game truly ruined me...

IKEMEN SENGOKU:Â FEAST THINE EYES ON STEAMPUNK WARLORDSSSS
Soooo after MM I have finally found my next Otome obsession Currently, the Taiwan server of Ikemen Sengoku is running a region-exclusive event that puts all the Warlords in a Steampunk AU. The outfits are too good, so I wanted to share this with the Western/JP server players! (Currently, I play on all 3 servers like the dumbass obsessive idiot I am)
More photos and information on the event story under the cut! (SPOILERS for the Taiwan Ikesen Steampunk Event). If youâd like to play on the Taiwan server, the app is named çžçˇć°ĺ (copy paste into your app store and search) and it doesnât appear to be region-locked. Ikesen is licensed to/published by a different company (iSweety) in Taiwan, so they sometimes have artwork and events /merch that are exclusive to that region, as well as unique promo videos.
There wasnât a promo page where I could grab the event artworks, so pardon my phone screenshots of dubious quality. I tried my best to take screencaps where the dialogue was minimal so you can get a better idea of their outfits. Theyâre all so good!
A 3/4 view of Mitsuhideâs Steampunk outfit. In this event, only stories for Nobunaga, Masamune, and Kenshin are available, and a minor collectible story for Ieyasu. In Masamuneâs afterstory, he mentions that Mitsuhide has the special ability to read peopleâs thoughts.
*holds back nosebleed* Iâm weak to men with slender waists ahhhhhghhgh. Masaâs Steampunk outfit fits him so well (Is that a man-corset? Can we make all men wear corsets?) and of course his collar is unfastened. I love the cogwheel design on his eyepatch too.
Even Kennyo looks rather dashing, that rascal, although heâs human in this story and hates the androids (and especially Nobunaga, of course) for having killed his fellow brethren.Â
IKESEN STEAMPUNK EVENT: STORY BACKGROUND / INTROÂ
You, the (human) main character, are the granddaughter of an eccentric Duke that created sentient machine life-forms called 械ĺś, which I will call androids for now (The name literally translates as âmechanical puppetsâ). Kennyo and others sometimes refers to them as merely âpuppetsâ (äşşĺś), likely in a derogatory manner.
The androids are sentient and are made of cogs and wheels and circuitry, and powered by a main heart-like âcoreâ which contains a rune. The rune contained within the core is referenced as the âsoulâ of the androids. Runes have different names, meanings, and uses. If an androidâs core is too badly damaged, they cease to function, or die in the robot sense of the word. Even if the core is repaired, if the ârune soulâ is damaged, the android wouldnât be considered living/sentient even if the rest of its mechanisms are functioning. Runes can exist in other forms, such as carved on things like doorways and rocks and hold power. There are teleportation runes which is how androids manage to quickly travel to and from the human community when necessary. Different circuits within an android serve different functions (movement, senses, etc), much like how different lobes or parts of the brain control specific bodily functions in a human. There are different types of androids, such as battle-types and healer-types, and they can have specific protocols and purposes. The story alludes to additional types, but they are not specifically named. Androids have masters, who are typically the one who created them, although this can differ. If a master dies, an android can live without a master or choose to follow another one. Androids can have multiple masters in their life, but in the story the majority of the androids live in their own community and no longer have a master.Â
Androids can obtain energy through consuming human food/drink, although itâs not described as their ideal or main method of obtaining energy (the main method was not specified). Itâs possible for traces of human food and drink to remain in their system, which can eventually build up over time and cause them to break down. Androids have their own emotions/opinions and thoughts, and can touch and feel just like humans. However, there is tension between humans and androids, who fear that androids, being physically superior, may one day wipe out the humans, and fights often break out.Â
After your grandfatherâs death, you go to âElflandâ, a hidden, floating island-slash-sky vessel created by your grandfather that is the last standing community of the sentient androids. Within this community, there are peaceful androids, who do not want to harm humans, and anti-human androids, who will attack humans on sight, as well as a third, neutral faction. You are here to search for your grandfatherâs hidden treasure, which he left you clues to before he passed away, and youâre assisted by the androids during your search. Nobunaga, Masamune, Mitsuhide, Mitsunari, Hideyoshi, are part of the peaceful faction, while Kenshin is part of the anti-human faction. Yukimura and Ieyasu are part of the neutral faction. In Kenshinâs route, Sasuke and Shingen are also mentioned briefly, but their faction is unknown. There was no mention of Yoshimoto or Ranmaru.Â
CHARACTER STORY - MINOR TO MAJOR SPOILERS BELOWÂ Â Â
Masamune:
Your grandfather the Duke had a friend and fellow android researcher whose eldest son passed away. In light of this, the Duke created Masamune in the image of that eldest son, to keep his friend company. Instead of âMasterâ, Masamune referred to the Dukeâs friend as âFatherâ, and they had a close relationship.
The Duke and his friend eventually had a bad falling out that escalated to violence, and Masamune got between them to stop them from fighting each other. His âfatherâ tried to shoot the Duke, and Masamune chose to protect the Duke. As a result of this incident, Masamune lost his right eye, and also became estranged from his father, who was upset that Masamune chose the Duke over him.  Although Yasu-bot offered to fix it, Masamune declined, saying that he wanted to keep the broken eye as a reminder to himself that âall choices have consequencesâ (and because eyepatches are cool). When you arrive on Elfland, he has you skydiving into your target exploration area rather than take a long time to walk there, and generally shows you around and adventures alongside you, while simultaneously protecting you from skirmishes against the anti-human androids. Ieyasu mentions that while Masamune âisnât a battle-type android, heâs pretty capableâ, but doesnât really explain just what kind of android he is. When Masamuneâs father got grievously injured, he was kept alive but was on a deathbed, suffering from tremendous pain every day. When Masamune came to visit him, he begged for Masamune to put him out of his misery. Masamune decided to do so, knowing that it would result in his fatherâs wife and younger son resenting him and people saying horrible things about how heâs an android that killed his own master who treated him like a son. You, of course, help resolve this misunderstanding and also see past the terrible reputation this gave Masamune, and you accept him fully, yaâll bond over war and fighting dealing with your ex-fiance (who happens to be the biological younger son of Masamuneâs father, and colluded with Kennyo to try to wreck Elfland) and discovering your granpapawâs treasure, and become lovers. In the afterstory, Masamune recalls that his father once told him to live life to the fullest. âIf youâre not doing what you love and enjoying all that life has to offer, then youâre not truly living, whether youâre made of flesh or steel doesnât matter. Otherwise, even if you have a heartbeat and youâre breathing, youâre no different than a walking corpse. If one day, I can no longer feel like Iâm alive, then Iâm already dead, even if my body is still functioning.â Reminiscing on this, Masamune wonders if meeting you was all fated since then. âIâve fallen in love with an incredible womanâ, he realizes, and listens to your heartbeat and makes you listen to his - âEvery movement of every cog in my body is saying how much I love you, to the point of breaking. Can you hear it?â He asks. âLet me listen awhile longer, and Iâll answer,â you reply. In true Masamune fashion, he declares he can't wait any longer and decides to get his answer directly from your body. Yee haw.
Nobunaga:
He has a special ability which can disable the functions of other androids temporarily. During your research you discover that he was made in the image of the famous historical warlord Nobunaga Oda, who once united Japan. You guys are already lovers when the story begins. Human-Android tensions are high, and whatâs worse is that Mitsuhide has been sneaking around meeting humans (including Kennyo) and making shady ass deals. You discover your grandfatherâs treasure hidden behind a door with a riddle written in ancient Japanese, a dead language that only you know because your grandfather taught you. The riddle reads: âWhat can save both the humans and androids and allow them to live in peace?â and the answer is âloveâ, and the door opens when you write out the character for love in Japanese on the entrance. Inside the treasure box you find in the room, you learn secrets that could be used for both great and terrible deeds, including the knowledge of how to create sentient androids and how to destroy them, how Elfland was created, and various other secrets about androids. You decide to hide them again to prevent this knowledge from getting into the wrong hands.
Human-Android tensions escalate into full out war as Mitsuhide informs the humans how to gain access to Elfland and where to attack. Kennyo and Nobunaga cross swords and Nobunaga is nearly outmatched when Mitsuhide appears, revealing that he led the humans here intentionally because he wanted to herd the bulk of the anti-Android fanatics together in one location and collectively wipe them out in order to effectively stamp out future threats of war. He apologizes for being late as he was delayed by Hideyoshi-bot almost killing him. Nobunaga just laughs and tells Mitsuhide he deserves it for worrying Hideyoshi, and a spiteful Kennyo reveals that he has been modified with Android parts to become stronger, and activates this power to try to land a killing blow on Nobunaga - only to discover that Mitsuhide has even plotted everything this far back in advance, and way back when Kennyo was being modified, Mitsuhide ensured that he had faulty parts installed. Heheh. Mitsuhide:2, Kennyo: 0 In the afterstory, itâs revealed that one of the secrets you learned was the process of turning an android into a human. Androids can perform whatâs called a âsoul contractâ with each other; when two androids perform this, they become linked and know each others thoughts and feelings, and if one Android dies, the other also loses power to their rune core and dies as well. However, if an Android performs a soul contract with a human, they can become a human (but there are unspecified risks involved, and success is more or less regarded as miraculous), and share a life. Since Nobunagaâs primary protocol was to protect Elfland and the vault that guarded your grandfatherâs treasure, and that duty has been completed, he wishes to become a human so that he can grow old with you and share the same lifespan. You establish the contract and miraculously heâs turned into a human and yaâll enjoy fun kinky times where you both know what the other is thinking and feel what the other is feeling (oh boy).
Ieyasu:
Healer-type android and constantly frets about the fact that heâs not a battle-type and therefore weak, and wonders why your grandfather created him this way. He claims to not like humans, and he blames himself for not being able to save the Duke, but you help him understand that it wasnât his fault and that you are thankful he was able to stay by the Dukeâs side and keep him company when he passed. He complains about having to repair Mitsunari-bot (who we never see). He is reluctant to get involved with humans, though this is revealed that itâs because he believes humans are too frail and die easily, and he didnât want to experience heartbreak again. One of the lines he mutters to himself (well out of your earshot of course) is how the existence of people like you and your grandfather is the reason he could never bring himself to fully hate or reject the humans. He has a workshop and appears to not differentiate between factions when it comes to treating those who need it, as he mentions having repaired Ken-bot before as well, who is on the anti-human faction.
Kenshin:
The text translates to âMy emotional circuits have been broken since a long time agoâ. I chortled to myself for a good, long minute at that one.Â
Anyway, Ken-bot is a battle-type android who also happens to have âprotecting youâ written as his top/primary protocol by your grandfather, which is why he goes along with all your endeavors despite belonging to the anti-human faction of the androids. He constantly emphasizes the fact that, as a battle-type droid, he is only capable of fighting and causing destruction. His emotional circuits arenât completely broken, and he still has an obsession with sake and dried plums, which, according to Sasuke-bot, Ken-bot partakes to a degree that leads Sasuke-bot to believe Ken-bot is trying to drink/eat himself into an early grave.Â
You learn from your grandfatherâs journal that he originally created Kenshin as a battle-type android, but that he desired to have Kenshin protect his legacy (the androids on elfland, and his granddaughter) rather than simply for fighting and destruction. He saw Kenshin as a protector, not a destroyer. You try to tell his to Ken-bot and also confess your feelings, which seem to cause Ken-botâs emotional circuits to malfunction even more. âI donât understand what you mean when you say you like me,â he says brokenly, and during the height of the human-android battle decides to stick you in the safest place possible, which is in a... dun dun dun-geon. He then throws himself into such a battle frenzy against the humans that invaded Elfland that Yuki-bot (instructed by Sasuke-bot, who we never actually see) comes to release you from the dungeon and take you to Ken-bot in order to save him from himself. Ken-bot believes the only way to achieve lasting peace is to wipe out all the humans. You challenge him by saying he should then kill you, since you are a human. Just as you seem to be about to convince him, a shot rings out, and Kenshin shoves you out of the way, his core taking a hit from protecting you. Shingen-bot and Sasuke-bot also having taken serious injuries, the anti-human faction have no leaders, and retreat.Â
You take an unconscious Ken-bot to the Oda forces to seek Ieyasuâs help. He says that the rune powering Ken-botâs core is damaged too badly, so you find the hidden treasure of the Duke, hoping to learn a way to restore Ken-bot. Ieyasu suggests attempting the soul-contract to try to convert Ken-bot into a human as a last ditch effort to save him, as it allows the bonded pair to share their lifeforce, but he stresses that thereâs no known record of it succeeding, and you may shorten your lifespan as a result. Your grandfatherâs records also mentions that would only work with high-level androids. Yasu-bot also adds this flavor text that by attempting the soul contract, âYou will share and endure all of the hardships, feelings and memories from the past of the other personâ. You, of course, plow forward without hesitation, to which Yasu-bot gives his typical sigh of annoyance. âAs expected of youâ, he comments simply, and adds âI can see why this emotionally-broken idiot would be changed by you.â
After what feels like a long and painful dream, you wake up to find Pinocchio - I mean Ken-bot - has become a real boy! He confesses his feelings to you, Yasu-bot fills you both in what happened with current events while you two were unconscious, and slaps on an added warning to Kenshin of âDonât ever make her cry again. Thereâs more people than you can imagine who hold her in high esteem, and theyâre all incredibly annoying people...and will be much more difficult for you to handle now, as a humanâ - to which Kenshin answers with a typical bloodthirsty threat and by grabbing and hugging you possessively. Yasu-bot shrugs and says he doesnât want to meddle in between âan annoying coupleâ anyway, and makes an offhand snide remark about how neither one of you make him worry any less than Mitsunari-bot does, checks up on you two one last time, and hurries out the room like he canât stand to be there for another moment longer. Which is smart of him, since in the Afterstory yaâll basically exchange mushy ass words with each other and do the nasty.
annnnd thereâs the Steampunk event as I experienced it. Hope to see some Steampunk AU fan creations of our favorite warlords in the future!

Chapter 2
Rumour mills were in full production. The gossip circles were tapping out messages on the underground jungle drums throughout the city and word was out ⌠The Ghost was here!
âBeware the shadows and its moving shade. Be mindful of your actions and the repercussions made. Judgement comes to those who donât. Beware the Ghost.â
Every family with ties to the underground knew the stories. They were told and passed on generation to generation. Tales the grown-ups told the children the same way the ordinary everyday people would recite a fairy tale. Except these were different.
Fairy tales were edited narratives, sugar-coated and glossing over the gory details to give the next generation growing up in the world a little moral guidance. When it came to the stories about the Ghost there was nothing sweet about them. Even in the dark underbelly of the world, there were lines you didnât cross, rules you obeyed and when that was ignored it was the Ghost that took you. Â
It was because nothing about it was hidden and all of it was true that is struck fear into the hearts of all those living in the underworld. The Ghost was the avenging angel in their world. The Judge, jury and executioner at your final supper. They were responsible for making the unrepentant pay the price owed. Every detail behind the stories of the Ghost could be easily found in the lines of text written by the coroner; if they found the body at all. The question hanging in the air⌠who was the Ghost targeting now?
---
Two minutes, it was all he could claw back from the time given to him by Sasuke. He had to get out of the main flow of traffic. The road opened up after a few sharp turns, the wheels of his car were smoking as he pulled hard on the handbrake and went down some roads that were so narrow, they could take the wing mirrors off the car had he not been more aware of the space provided.
His engine as it raced through the old cobblestone routes of the old city filled the air with a monstrous roar even as the vibrations threatened to shake the chassis from the rest of the car. The other vehicles had not given up the pursuit but were now forced to follow him in single file. He wanted to get them out of town but that would be asking for too much. He followed the labyrinthine roads following a map in his own head and decided drawing them out to the dockyard was the best option. Youâre in my playground. Donât presume you can back me into a corner when I know all the short cuts.
The smile on his face grew deeper as his focus on the road ahead cleared. He was not so much the vision of a man being pushed in a murderous pursuit through the twisting veins of the city but that of one that was simply out for a drive on a long weekend. Yes, this was his city. The dark side streets and alleys were his bread and butter, all the old roads the jam that just served to make his nightlife all the sweeter for his hunt.
As the front of his car exited the alleyway like a bullet from a shotgun. The cobbles under his wheels gave way to slick dirt. The moisture from the water in the air here meant the ground was never what you could call dry. The natural clay content of it meant it was like skating on an icy pond. The other cars exited behind him and began to separate up to cover as many routes behind him as they could.
It was laughably predictable and he couldnât avoid the dry chuckle that left him as he glanced in his rear-view mirror and once more pulled on his hand brake causing his car to spin on the ground under it so he could come face to face with his pursuers. The salt clogged mud slick sprayed in arcs by his rear bumper before falling still on the ground once more. He could almost feel the hesitation from them as he changed the game from cat and mouse into one of chicken.
Mitsuhide put his hand up to the handle on the roof clicking a hidden button that slid back a small compartment there revealing a primed and loaded gun. Now then, whoâs first?
---
Stepping foot back into HQ Nobunaga was almost immediately accosted by a highly strung Hideyoshi. The man had been sitting in a chair by reception and practically pounced the second he saw his Bossâs highly polished shoes touch the tiles.
âYouâre back!â The man blurted out as if in shock. Warm caramel brown eyes searched Nobu from top to toe as if he were expecting some sort of mortal wound to be present.
âNaturally.â Nobu replied rather lazily as he fixed his right-hand man with a nondescript look. He was a little amused but mostly thankful that it was past office hours and there were no clients that would be in need of explanations as to why the Vice President was acting like someone had put itching powders in his boxers.
âYou didnât answer your phone. I was worried.â Hideyoshi spoke with panic still clear in his voice and slightly shaking. You really would make someone a fine wife one day Yoshi. Still, for all your fussing I canât deny you have been a dependable ally during some of the darker times.
âWhen are you never worried?â Nobu replied in exasperation failing to suppress the sigh that was building inside him.
âWhy didnât you answer?â Hideyoshi appeared hurt by being ignored and it was obvious it had been yet another thing he deemed life-threatening or at the very least major enough that could yet again bring down the foundations of their company that were already standing on rocky terrain.Â
He didnât know if it was the lingering effects of his time at the Birdcage or if he had simply found the eye of the emotional storm that had been raging inside him. He was reluctant to dwell too long on such a thing but he couldnât keep his newfound amusement from escaping him.
Nobu smirked slightly and replied. âI left for a few hours. I fail to see what disasters could have befallen during that time that could not be easily handled by the men I left in my place. A fact that was confirmed when I turned my phone back on and was bombarded with several messages one of which was our new resident tech expert informing me that the matter was in hand.â
Hideyoshi stood where he was mouth agape at the succinct rundown of events. A surge of satisfaction washed over Nobu as he succeeded in rendering the other man speechless. The doors to the underground car park opened revealing a spectacled arrival carrying a bag printed with a grocery store logo.
âYou fixed that?â Having found his voice again Hideyoshi stated more in shock than as a question as he turned his attention on the new arrival. Sasuke quickly looked between the two men noting that they were both showing polar opposite levels of the emotional spectrum and made the connection to the only incident of interest for the day.
âYes. It did take a little bit of creative hacking to do it but I was able to shut down the news drone and have the incident written off as a scene being filmed for a new movie. Hardly something out with my skill set.â Sasuke pushed up his glasses causing them to glint in a way that made him look even more like a casual superhero than normal.
âYou think people will buy that?â Hideyoshi stammered at the unbelievable ease with which Sasuke replied. Nobunaga stood silently watching the two converse. He plunged his hand deep into his trouser pocket his fingertips finding the edge of his key that would allow him to escape to his rooms.
âThey already have.â Sasuke flashed his smartphone with a still image of the street view below the drone and the new headline âHigh-Speed preview of new action movie â was the Directorâs choice of using the real world refreshing or irresponsible?â Nobunagaâs lips tugged into a large satisfied smile and chuckled with the amusement of the audacious plan as well as the apparent effect, it had on Hideyoshi.
âYou donât exactly look shocked by any of this.â Hideyoshi stated trying to figure out why he seemed so lax about the events. Ever since the companies had merged, he had to confess he had a hard time getting a read on this young man. His expressionless face gave nothing away and it was unsettling to not even be able to detect a real shift in tone as he spoke. Hideyoshi was a people person or as Mitsuhide had pointed out on more than one occasion a people pleaser. To be unable to get even subliminal guidance from someone as to how to assist them or what they are even thinking unnerved him.
âKenshin is my Boss. Being asked to shut down a few cameras and changing a few things on the city grid to redirect attention is nothing.â Sasuke replied in a calm manner with a little shrug that only seemed to frustrate Hideyoshi even more.
---
The sound of tape being pulled from a roll and placed over cardboard almost seemed to echo in the almost empty rooms as the last of their things was finally packed. Her cat sat by the window where it had claimed a place for itself the second Mitsuhide had retrieved it from Takahiroâs loft space. Swishing its tail unhappily, as its blissful time enjoying the sunlight was being disturbed by the sounds of moving.
It had been a whirlwind experience coming back to Azuchi HQ after everything that happened. She had thought to try to explain everything at the church about her living arrangements but it seemed Mitsuhide already knew that she no longer had her apartment. He could have left her to return to Takahiroâs apartment but it seemed that was not an idea he wished to entertain. All of the familiar faces welcomed her regardless of the tension that was present in the air. Something had clearly been happening but it was going to be a few days before anyone explained the current situation to her.
Staying in his rooms at Azuchi was only ever supposed to be temporary. He was pulling strings and taking late-night phone calls trying to secure somewhere new. He wanted her to be safe it was key and his number one priority. Whilst it was safe at HQ Mitsuhide hadnât felt entirely comfortable leaving her there on a permanent basis. [Name] was effectively a magnet for danger, as far as he could work out. Whilst they had survived a lot, he had no liking for the idea of leaving her in a place where she could easily become embroiled in yet another âplanâ. On top of that if the others discovered [Name] was related in some distant way to the enemy he really didnât like the idea of what might happen to her.
She took another look around the room just in case she had missed something they needed. Thinking that it looked just as empty as it had done when she first came here. Mitsuhide wasnât exactly minimalist by choice it was something to do with his work. The less you have the fewer things people can use against you, but the lack of luxury items or things you might expect as a common standard of living somewhere were also not present in the apartment. He was never really at home to notice that an electric kettle or a microwave might actually help him a little in the mornings or late evenings. The longer she stayed the more she noticed little things she had taken for granted, like a hairdryer. She had taken to picking up these missed items on her way home from work.
Mitsuhide said nothing to the accumulation of objects appearing in his apartment. He knew what they all were and how to use them just had never seen a need to have them. They were together and would be for a long time. His small isolated little hole had been filled with something far closer to a kind of peace than he ever thought someone like him would even have a hope of seeing. It was a form of culture shock that was not entirely unpleasant. Despite his home being taken over with progressively more acquired bric-a-brac and miscellaneous goods, he felt comfortable and at ease. She had turned his place into the same warm and inviting area her apartment was, and he found he sort of liked it.
âHey Kitten, you got any more ready to go?â A lively voice called out before the person attached to it had even managed to make it into the room.
âThink this is the last one.â [Name] called back turning to smile at the men who had been helping shift most of the belongings.
âGood because Iâm not making any more trips.â Ieyasu huffed cracking open the lid on a bottle of mineral water and chugging half of it in one go.
âIt was nice of you to help out Yasu.â [Name] smiled sweetly unaffected by the salty blondeâs attitude.
âIâm only doing it to shut Hideyoshi up and to get you and the body collector out of my hair.â Ieyasu hastily started to make an excuse desperate to hide the redness he felt breaking out on his face. He wasnât exactly a stranger to interacting with women but there were certain types of them that seemed to trigger him to fluster badly. Masa often teased him that it looked like he was a teenager having a short circuit because a pretty girl spoke to them.
âBody collector?â She inclined her head a quizzical expression replacing that beaming smile.
âBest not to ask Lass. Yasuâs still a little salty over having to deal with what is left of your fellaâs⌠whatever he does.â Masa chuckled and put his hand on her head. [Name] pulled herself back swatting the hand from her and met his smile with a brief glare that was rendered powerless by the manâs lack of concern.
âItâs strange to think Iâm leaving here again.â She rolled her eyes and glanced about again.
âItâs not too late you know Kitten. Just have to say the word and I could steal you awayâŚâ Masa moved like a cat sliding up closer and leaning over to whisper in her ear. Failing spectacularly as his volume control was definitely off.
âMy-my, someone is feeling confident despite his lack of depth perception.â A teasing voice came some somewhere behind them carrying a chilling edge to it. All three of them turned to see Mitsuhide propped up against the doorway, one hand in his trouser pocket. The smile on his face at first glance appeared pleasant but didnât reach his eyes at all, it could send a shiver up anyoneâs back.
---
It had taken some time to secure a residence for them but after conducting some final checks he was finally back at HQ. That little diversion from earlier had been interesting but he was still thankful for it to have reached its conclusion swiftly. He parked his car alongside the van that stood there with its loading doors wide open revealing box after box piled up methodically, each one labelled in her delicate handwriting. Looks like Iâm a little late to the party on this one. I wonder who got the job of assisting the Princess. I could see Hideyoshi doing that, the man never knows when to stop smothering.
Moving from the car park to the elevator in the lobby he was hit with a feeling of something a little nostalgic. He had never really taken the time to appreciate the building. It was a base of operations, somewhere to work out of and run back too. It was also naturally a legitimate business and on a weekday was as busy as an anthill at a picnic. Today though it was quiet and as he stepped into the lift, he realised that the significance of the place was about to shift for him. He would be here but it was only going to be for work. He would maintain a room but it would only be for use on occasion. Is this what a normal life feels like? Working and then going home somewhere else?
The closer he got to his rooms the more he was aware of activity. And then just before he entered, he heard the unmistakable voice of Masa.
âItâs not too late you know Kitten. Just have to say the word and I could steal you awayâŚâ
âMy-my, someone is feeling confident despite his lack of depth perception.â He stopped in the doorway adopting an air of nonchalance when he was, in fact, feeling anything but. The familiar tease in his voice didnât manage to cover for him either. Of all the people why him? Itâs not as bad as Shingen I suppose but stillâŚ
âI knew you were there.â Masa snorted meeting Mitsuhideâs smile with a knowing grin of his own. It was like watching a cat and dog in a face-off about to have a scuffle.
âThen you are also lacking in your sense of personal preservation.â Mitsuhide slowly moved closer to [Name] pushing himself between her and Masa forcing the other man back. Masa was chuckling and looking at Mitsuhide as if he had just found something brand new and shiny to play with. Donât try to play games with me. You can only imagine what I will do and even then, I would easily surpass your delusions. Wait a minute why am I so annoyed right now?
âHave you met Masa? The guy is a walking disaster who is basically a pain in my ass.â Ieyasu spoke up disrupting the atmosphere enough to dissipate some of the friction.
âHaha, Iâm going to miss you guys.â Her laughter from behind him snuffed out the last of his rising turmoil. She was a miracle balm to his fraying nerves. He was still not used to this thing called âloveâ they shared. It still threatened to be an all-consuming fire he would happily die in.
âNo need to pull that face [Name].â Masa adjusted himself and pulled back. He had amused himself enough and didnât wish to upset Mitsuhide further. It was so easy to see the emotions playing in the usually unreadable man. He had seen them clear as day in his friend after that fake funeral incident and the only one oblivious to it was apparently the man himself.
âHeâs right, not like you are going so far away you canât visit. I will probably be busy but you will no doubt find a way to disturb me.â
âWouldnât hurt you to be a bit more honest there Yasu.â Masa laughed and roughly rubbed his knuckles over the top of the fluffy blondeâs head, before picking up the last sealed box. âAnyway, Iâll take this down to the van.â
âIâll hold the door for you.â Ieyasu leapt forward and barged past Masa nearly knocking him over in a rush to escape the room.
âBeing awfully friendly today arenât you Yasu?â Masa looked a little shocked at the sudden show of enthusiastic helpfulness.
âNot really I just donât want to stay around here and play gooseberry.â
âThose two make a good pair.â [Name] said wistfully as she watched the others leave. It made him feel like he wanted to make her look at him.
âThey do have an extraordinary ability to make up for each otherâs deficiency.â He turned around locking her small frame in his arms. âNow then little one whatever shall I do with you?â I never had myself pegged for a possessive man. You really do have a curious power little mouse. The things you do to me.
âMe? What did I do now? I havenât done anything.â [Name] startled and her blue eyes began to flicker around wandering the room attempting to remember anything that might have incurred punishment.
âYou are very guilty my dear, you just havenât realised it yet.â He dipped low and sealed her lips shut with his. I will never get bored with watching you, my love. If this is a dream I donât want to wake up.
âMmfph⌠Mitsuhide! Donât tell me youâre jealous.â She placed her hand on his chest pushing him back. Her upturned eyes looking at his searching for answers he didnât wish to give. Jealous? Ah, so thatâs what that wasâŚ
âAlright⌠I wonât tell you.â His lips curved into a wolf-like grin as he claimed her mouth again.
---
The stars in the sky were obscured by that sickly glow from the city. He could only very faintly pick out one or two points of light above him. The air felt heavy but he was unsure whether that was an omen of rain or the echo of his own discomfort. Â
His time at the club had been a welcome distraction even if he hadnât been able to completely let go. The carefully crafted world of his was becoming more unstable. Voices carried in the wind, not wanting to openly admit the facts. They were concerned once more and it all had a negative impact on the trust, they had in Azuchi. A trust they had in him. The firm hand he once held the city with was being pried open and he could feel it slipping like sand through his fingers. But who the hell is it? Who is still pulling strings?
He sighed and lowered himself down onto the bench in the pavilion. His gaze moved from a fixed point in the past to the present and he frowned. Nobody liked change, but that is exactly what was happening. Esshu should have collapsed but didnât. There was one reason for that, the only one that made any logical sense and it was that there was more than one head running the show. Wheels and cogs began to turn in his mind as he thought through various proposals and suggestions that he could use to secure a foot in the door at the other company. Anything I offer would be much harder to refuse if I could just find the focal point. That weak link in the chain that holds all the strings. Who do I know that could find that?

Her
Fandom: Ikemen Sengoku Pairing: Ieyasu x MC (Mai) Word Count: 890 Written by: @rosengoddess Requested by: @got2wice Prompt: 99. âI fell in love with you, not them.â for Ikesen Ieyasu A/N: I hope this is to you liking, it was fun writing this~
He doesnât know how to explain it, how his heart threatened to burst whenever he catches sight of her. The way she smiled, her eyes shining with happiness as she went about her business, the way she laughed, reminding him of silver bells ringing in the wind, the way she spoke, a lyrical melody regardless of what she says. Everything about her enchanted him and she doesnât know when it started, when he started to notice her, when he began to fall for her.
When he walk past, whether it be conscious or unconscious, he would take a glance at her, curiosity at what she may be doing, be it chatting with the maids or laughing with his men, but the moment she turns to look at him he hurries away, his face strangely red. He has no explanation, nothing to reason.
The worst part of all is her reactions to everything he says. From his scathing remarks to his barbed insults, she takes no offence to any of them, instead she smiles and takes it all, returning his words with kindly ones of her own. She calls him strong when he believes himself weak, she sheds tears despite his own personal story, she does not pity him nor show sympathy at his plight â something he is eternally thankful for â rather she showed her anger, silently challenging him. She neednât words to explain herself, he understands it plainly, the way she enunciated each and every word after. He would never forget that day.
Sheâs an enigma, is all he can say.
But she isnât always sunshine and rainbows. There has been a fair few times he has seen her in pain, sadness marring her beautiful features, a forlorn expression on her face. And every single time he would want to reach out, fingers outstretched yet he restraint himself, forcing himself to look away. For some reason he feels like he has no right to see her like that, feeling as if he has seen something personal.
He feels pain in his chest whenever he sees her like that, an urge to pull her close and comfort her slowly taking over him.
He doesnât understand it, he really doesnât.
But someday he hopes for the chance.

His footsteps thud against the floorboards, face sour as he made his way down the hallways. It wasnât that he disliked parties, he just disliked certain parts of it, for example the messes Mitsunari makes when he attempts to pour sake, or the rowdiness of certain individuals. But what made this particular event even more annoying was the fact that Masamune had arrived early in the morning, interrupted his work and absconded with Mai without even bothering to notify him of anything.
That what infuriated him the most.
If he was lucky, maybe he would see her there, the chances were unpredictable, to say the least.
He was soon proven wrong however, the moment he stepped foot into the hall. He expected something else other than this, anything other than this. A completely sombre mood in the fell over the room the moment he entered, eyes watching him, making him feel a tad bit suspicious, and overall uncomfortable.
âWhatâs going on ââ
Before he could finish his sentence, he was interrupted, caught off guard by Nobunaga, who for some reason began to berate him for something he had no idea of, every so often the others would pipe in and yet throughout it all, none of them would explain to him the situation.
It was until then did Nobunaga finally ended, stating that he is not to leave the room until he âmade upâ with Mai did everything click into place. Masamune stealing Mai, a sudden supposed party with no explanation or any prior warning, and this sudden intervention of sorts? Were they misunderstanding something or â
He stood dumbfounded as he watched the others file out the room, the door sliding shut with a resounding shut behind Hideyoshi, leaving him seeming alone before another door opened, this time revealing the person he had been worriedly looking for the entire time, the person who made him flustered for no rhyme or reason,
Mai.
âHi Ieyasu,â a momentary pause as she looked away, face flushed as she continued albeit sheepishly. âThey went a little too far, didnât they.â
He didnât know how to respond, much less look her directly in the eye. The situation was much too awkward, much too strange for any normal conversation to take place. With that hanging down upon them, he sighed.
âWant to have some tea?â
âOh, sure, sounds fine.â
Now neither of them could look directly at the other, the feeling was uncomfortable, that is until he finally got sick and tired of it.
âYou look niceâŚ?â
âHuh? Ah, thanks, Masamune got it for me. He said something about making a guy fall in love or something to that extent.â
â⌠What.â
That kind of nonsense⌠is really something Masamune could come up with. Taking a deep breath, he stated truthfully.
âBeautiful clothes donât make a man fall like that, you donât need them to attract someone else.â
And underneath his breath he added.
âI fell for you, not them, after all.â

Why I love the Kitsune
Okay....so something a little different than my usual fics or shenanigans. I make my favourite characters known quite frequently and, now that his route has been officially announced for Japanese release this year, I wanted to share something Iâve been chipping away at for a hot minute. I love Mitsuhide...like a lot....like, a LOT a lot. And I wanted to share my personal reasons why. If this ainât your cup of tea, fine by me, but I need to scream about him now that I know Iâll get to romance him in like....a year and a half ;P
~Spoilers ahead~
1. First Impressions
Honestly when I first saw this dude rock up after MC saves Nobunaga from the Honno-ji fire...I didnât think much. I liked his look: white hair and damn, those eyes! (Iâm weak for anime men with gold eyes), but other than that, he wasnât someone I thought would become my favourite. Especially with the early interactions of Hideyoshi mistrusting him and learning that IRL Mitsuhide betrayed Nobu and caused his death? ...yeeeah, I wasnât entirely sold.
Mitsuhide was a slow burn for me - I needed to see him in other routes to let him shine, then I could be consumed by the light in his separate stories (ie. birthday, event stories). The moment I realised I was smitten was Masamuneâs route. Him being the worst wingman by getting Masa drunk made me laugh so hard because it fit him well: sticking to the shadows and hiding his good intentions behind teasing as he helps his friends. But he also let his more genuine side show in Masaâs Romantic Epilogue, giving MC advice whilst also remaining very much himself and laughing at Masamuneâs distress because of how cute she is sdjfsukdgbsdj.
From then on, I was hooked and decided to play Hideyoshiâs route nextâŚ..hehe, hehehe, heâŚ.it still hurts. Iâll go more into this route in particular a little bit later, but yes, his unrequited love broke me and only made me fall for him harder. Not just from pity because of how much it hurt to see him like that, but because now we know he totally deserves love and happiness for the type of man he revealed himself to be in Hideyoshiâs route. All in all, I was teetering on the cliff for a bit before I was Sparta kicked into the Mitsuhide hole...and have not wanted to move since :3
2. Personality
Phew, okay. Imma split this up into categories just to make it easier for you guys to read and so I donât ramble and go on tangents.
Teasing, teasingâŚ.and more teasing
God, I love this trope so much. Those who hide their true selves behind honeyed words and calculated jokes both make me swoon and make me suspicious - a winning combo to get me invested in them.
For those reading this who are less familiar with IkeSen and need a comparison, think Edgar from IkeRev, except 1. More direct and suggestive teasing, and 2. More (if only slightly) moments of genuineness, like being surprised or taken aback instead of using his smile as a wall like Edgar would do. Even through his teasing, he slips in honesty (in every lie thereâs a hint of truth, some say ;3).
While he is teasing and chastising (treating the MC like a child), he does genuinely care about her well-being. He uses teasing as his unorthodox way to let people know he cares for him while still keeping them on their toes about whether heâs telling the truth or not...this is why heâs a kitsune (a trickster fox spirit).
Pragmatic and Composed
Itâs mentioned throughout both Hideyoshiâs route and event stories like Make My Heart Spark that Mitsuhide is not one for believing in things like fate or destiny. Heâs described as self-reliant and honestly, I can't think of a better term for him. The way he works literally puts him in self-sacrificing positions where he can only work alone, so being capable without having the support of others is a skill he had to master quickly.
He also says things like âhonesty can be dangerousâ, which is a WHOLE can of worms for possible backstory.
What I like to imagine from this is that he experienced something traumatic, either to himself or someone close to him, where honesty was the cause. He convinced himself deception and leaving as little information in the open as possible was the best option. Hell, it even ties into Mitsuhideâs IRL counterpart, where there is nowhere near as much info on the guy compared to practically every other warlord. He thinks rationally, remains calm under pressure and can even remain teasing throughout...I respect and melt over him for that.
Beneath the wolf skin lies a sheep
I like thinking of Mitsuhide as a sheep in wolfâs clothing. He has to remain intimidating and unapproachable to those around him - even those close to him - so as not to disrupt his ever-scheming plans. But secretly, he has a heart of gold and he still makes it known...itâs just subtle. My personal favourite example is in his birthday story where he lets MC win at hanafuda just so she can win the bet and make her happyâŚ.gaah, Iâm weak! It always just seems like his teasing remarks and subtle pushes in the right direction are his way of showing his affection, because itâs too dangerous for him to be openly affectionate lest others get swept into his business. A sad thought, but incredibly fitting. Heâs also softer than he looks, he knows full well he shouldnât get close, but you being the sexy, incredibly awesome MC you are can make even Mitsuhide be ensnared in the strings of love that bind his heart ;3
Other screaming about my adoration for the snek man
JustâŚ..help me, heâs so smooth! I love love LOVE the way he talks, the way heâs translated into English just makes my heart go JFSBFSJBFWOUJFNW! He uses phrases like âmodesty forbidâ and âpray tellâ...he just needs to say âperish the thoughtâ and Iâll be even more wrapped around his finger than I already am.
Also, the pet names...I surprised myself with how much I like his use of them, especially him calling MC dear. I LOVE IT SO!! Idk how to describe this one and why it makes me feel things, I just...love being a silly girl, a good girl, a little mouse, a little seamstress and other nicknames sure to arise in the future >:3
Again, Iâll mention how he has a soft spot of the MC as he gradually warms to her andâŚseriously, itâs illegal to be that sweet, with such a nice smile on your face too. MITSUHIDE DESERVES LOVE AND I WILL GIVE IT TO HIM DAMMIT~!
Final screaming point of why I personally love him: his awareness and how he responds with it. Itâs no secret our psychic fox over here is good at reading the atmosphere, and I love when he uses this gift in more tender moments. Picking up when MC is sad or distraught and offering assistance (after teasing of course), and I like to think in a romantic sense, heâd be the type to hold her close and stroke her hair while she just lets out her frustrations. And heâll take them all, listening quietly and calming her down all the while. GAAAAH, Iâm weeeaaakkk~
3. Personal Theories and Favourite Theories I Have Seen
I have speculated about this man a LOT and thereâs a couple of theories I wanted to share just because itâs fun to make them and bounce off ideas :3
One I like to think about is his past and how it molded him into the man he is today. Using IRL Mitsu as a guide, he apparently worked as a messenger for a wandering shogun before serving Nobunaga and grew up in a castle bearing his family name. This makes me think that he might be similar to Ieyasu, perhaps being a political hostage at some point in his life. Mistreatment or torture would have worked to make Mitsuhide believe that deception and lies work to conceal his weakness, and how heâs so privy to torture and interrogation techniques.
Another theory is the one relating to his lack of taste. My guess is either a botched poisoning attempt from his work in his adult years, or through torture as a young child while his taste buds were still developing. @deathbyotome did an amazing fic for this called âTasteâ on AO3 and I highly recommend reading it, itâs very good.
Iâm also intrigued by how theyâre going to incorporate Motonari in with Mitsuhide, considering Nobunaga put Mitsuhide in charge of the Oda contingent when war waged between the two clans. So they have history (at least...IRL history), so Iâm wondering if thatâll come into play in the future.
~
Okay, I think Iâve rambled enough. Not even sure if people will even read this, but I just needed to expel my love for this man, especially now that we know his route is definite and will be coming. I just seriously, honestly love him and want nothing more than for him to be happyâŚ.but we ALL know his route is gonna be angsty as hell and weâre gonna be broken by the end of it. I am ready Cybird, let him break my soul so I can reach him and ease his heart. âŚ.Iâm not being dramatic at all bfasjdbafan. Anyway byyye, thanks for humouring me~! :3

SLBP Cuckoo Event Review
MC as the cuckoo in that famous samurai cuckoo saying... I definitely liked the premise of the event. And hereâs what I thought of the contents, in increasing order of happiness!
Ieyasuâs story starts out on a bizarre note: when MC visits his temporary shop because of his random love letter, his goons capture her and Yahiko (poor Y gets rope burns...!), he proposes marriage sweetly, MC calls him out on his fake bullshit, and he reverts to his pissy, insulting self. The guy spends the next few weeks visiting MCâs restaurant, not eating anything, and calling MC stupid. And because MCâs a masochist and highly susceptible to reverse psychology, she works way harder to impress his picky palate than I personally wouldâve... Eventually Ieyasu asks MC to move back with him, gets pissy when she doesnât immediately accept, and disappears for months so that MC can wallow in angst, before coming back and sweeping her away.
...Ugh. WTF did I just read? Why did Ieyasu even like MC in the first place?! He claims he saw her working and instantly fell in love, but thatâs BS and his motivations are unclear. And why did MC want to impress this rude idiot anyway? In this story Ieyasu deserves a punch to the face, not delicious food and true love. I hated it. Ieyasu fans may disagree, but I personally canât stand his stupid âpoison smileâ right now. ^_^
Personal enjoyment: 1/10
In this story itâs clear that Hideyoshiâs been harboring a crush on MC for a while because sheâs âcute and hardworking.â Giving Inichiyo an aneurysm with his flirty tactics is simply a plus for this charmer. MCâs shy, but he spends his days allowing himself to be friend zoned and being nice to her and helping with groceries and such. And making MC jealous with his perfumes handkerchieves and fixing womenâs sandals, but hey, we always knew this guy was a rogue, lol. In the end, right before he gives up on MC forever, he realizes that MCâs jealousy stems from mutual feelings, and the story ends on a hopeful note (âPerhaps this doesnât have to be the end of things just yet?â).
I thought H was pretty likeable in this event personally, but as with Ieyasu, I found his romantic motivations to be unclear. How was it possible he had a crush on MC if heâd never talked to her before? What made her so special, besides plot reasons?! In any case, I donât love jealousy plots and the story itself was pretty simplistic imho, but H was sweet and I thought it wasnât too bad overall.
Personal enjoyment: 5.5/10
Nobunagaâs ES starts out in a classically Nobunaga-ish fashion, with the guy demanding marriage from MC out of nowhere. And MCâs having none of it! He eventually reveals he actually wanted MC for her one-of-a-kind cooking skills, lmfao. Of course. This makes total sense đ. Anyway, Nobunaga drags MC to hang out several times during his stay in Kyoto, and the pair eventually do grow genuine feeelings for each other over sugar-fueled dates. The guy comes back from a battle to rescue MC at a critical moment, confesses his final reason for wanting MC (âbecause I couldnât think of dying and leaving you behindâ), and everyone lives happily ever after.
Nobunaga is an absolute treat when heâs not hurting anyone with his ridiculous antics, and he was definitely in fine form in this story! He gives off strong YA novel love interest vibes with his stupid imperiousness (that MC doesnât take seriously thank goodness), and I am A-ok with that, lol. I also liked how his motivations were clear throughout the entire story! Overall, I thought this ES was delightful to read and it was definitely my favorite of the lot.
Personal enjoyment: 9/10
All in all, I wouldnât say this was my favorite event, but I came in with no expectations so from that perspective it couldâve been worse.
If you want another (more thirsty, lol) perspective you should check out @aedysaâs recap! I have no idea how to link on mobile though ^_^
Anyway, what did you all think of this event? :)

(Illume)Â Epilogue: Wear Red When You Bring Me Offerings
Yukiko delivered her child, a healthy son named Ryutaro, on the second of October. Iyotushi Akechi was crowned Emperor on October fifth, 1583.
When the smoke cleared, all of the retinue but Reiko could be healed and returned to life. The spirits were dispersed into the land through Tadaki's tower, and there they reside to this day. After the coronation, the retinue departed for the four corners of Japan, to see if the war-torn land could be salvaged.
The Crane Clan was decimated by the machinations of Arenro, and on Lord Akazawa Tsuneyasu's death in 1585, the Crane was simply folded into the Scorpion, Tomika and Funitsu ruling jointly over the combined clan. The pair stayed married (though why they did so was the wonderment of all who knew them, except Yukiko), and eventually had three children, two boys and a girl. Soshi Tsutsako never married, preferring her shujenja studies to all worldly affairs, so she claimed.
The Crab did survive to rise again, though Hideyoshi did not return to his former position as Clan Lord. Haku's daughter Kita was adopted into the clan and ruled them for forty-four hard years, as the Crab fought to regain even a shadow of its former glory.
Haku married within his clan and had five children--not including the one who was Yukiko's son. Few ever guessed Ryutaro's parentage, as he took strongly after Yukiko's father. Those who did guess never spoke of it; Haku took the secret to his grave. It is unknown if Yukiko ever knew who the father of her child was.
Hideyoshi served under Akechi as the general of the Imperial Army for seven years. His body never fully recovered from his extended spirit possession, and as his health declined he gave up his position and went to live in Sapporo, in the newly rebuilt Phoenix palace. He died in his sleep in 1598.
Hiroshi found that life within the Unicorn suited him and kept both of his wives pregnant almost constantly for years. Sun Bear took over leadership of the clan when she gained her majority, and proved to be a fierce and wise leader. Hiroshi died in battle in 1622.
Panda and Nibori eventually had a number of children, most of whom were hengenyokai, two of whom were nearly pure Air Spirit Folk, the twin heirs of Skyhome. Tadaki visited regularly until Nibori's death in 1642. Panda outlived her husband by twenty years, but on his death gave leadership of the Lion clan over to her eldest son and retired to Skyhome. To her dying day, she went for daily flights with Gryphon.
Gryphon found himself a mate--a number of them--and lived quite happily in Skyhome for the rest of his days. He always seemed to have a kitsune or two around him, the only gryphon to ever keep pet foxes.
Tadaki moved the City of the Sun to a large island far off the coast of Japan, and used his now-formidable arts to cloak the island with spells that even today prevent any who are not of hengenyokai blood from finding it or even being able to think of it for very long. He married Kintro, a childhood friend, in 1585. (When she told the story of their betrothal, Kintro never failed to point out that Tadaki, when Kintro told him he was going to marry her, looked around panicked, in hopes that it somehow wasn't him she was speaking to. He did eventually reconcile himself to the notion of marriage.) As of the early 1700's, he still lives in the City of the Sun, the staff that he carries extending his lifespan far beyond the usual for hengenyokai.
Iyotushi Hirohito, at a strongly worded suggestion from his brother, surprised everyone by marrying Soshi Karasuko, Funitsu's stepmother. Thus he cemented the Imperial family's ties to the Scorpion clan. He held the official position of Imperial Advisor for the rest of his life. He and Karasuko had no children.
It turned out that the Demonbane had been holding what was left of the original Thrykreen and the entire remaining population of kitsune in a secure cell under his now-destroyed palace. There were six of each, and by the time they were found they had all paired off. Fortunately for mankind, the two halves of the race decided that they vastly preferred each other's company to living parasitically off of humans. To this day, the myobu (as they call themselves, after the Celestial kitsune who were all killed by the Demonbane) live very quietly in small communities that are usually walled away from the human life around them. A number of them also live in Skyhome.
All of the altered Thrykreen died within six months of the Demonbane's death. The Warresh still slumber in their crystal city, and hopefully always will.
Jeron spent a time wandering the length of Japan, occasionally dropping in on those who had been his compatriots, attending each wedding and funeral alike. For a while, he sailed on the Benevolent, becoming friends (and, it is rumored, lovers) with the copper-eyed second mate, Kalva. When Japan opened its borders in 1642, he traveled west, first through China and India, then Europe, eventually settling in London for a number of years. In 1685, he returned home, settling down to write an English translation of the events of the Spirit War.
The Phoenix Clan passed to Yukiko's son, Ryutaro, and Yukiko served as both the Phoenix regent and Empress until he reached his majority. Akechi ruled for thirty years, overseeing the rebuilding of Japan after the Spirit War, but insisted on keeping the borders of the country closed to outsiders. He died in 1613, followed by Yukiko in 1618. Ryutaro passed on the rulership of the Phoenix Clan to his firstborn daughter and took on the mantle of Emperor. Under Ryutaro's rule, the borders of Japan became progressively more open and the Clans began to fall out of power, as the Emperor worked to make Japan a part of the world.
Takumi Yamashita and Edi-lo were buried in the same shrine, on the grounds of the Phoenix estate in Sapporo.
Takumi Reiko was buried on the Iyotushi estate, just outside of Kyoto, in a shrine built for her by Akechi and Yukiko. The shrine is on a hill overlooking a river. From the torii of the shine, one can look down to the riverbank and see the place where a mage and an immortal once met and fell in love.
Her grave is one of the few places on the earth that the myobu hold sacred.
--Saruwatari Jeron, September, 1703
September 12th, 1703
Jeron leaned back at his desk, looking at the manuscript in front of him. "That's it, then," he said aloud to the empty room. "It's done."
Even with Reiko's spirit gone, he still retained the habits that having her around for a century had ingrained in him: speaking his thoughts aloud, leaving offerings at the small altar under one of the windows in this small house, double-checking to make sure he didn't accidentally close the door on her tails when she was frisking around in fox form.
He had begun the translation after she'd gone, almost twenty years ago, returning to Japan and finagling his way into the Imperial vaults, where Yukiko had stored her journals and letters before she'd died. There was currently a fad in London for myths and stories from the Orient, and Jeron had a publisher interested in his translation. The desk before him was littered with paper and parchment, covered with elegantly handwritten Japanese script.
"Funny. Only the myobu and hengenyokai will ever realize what this is, if they ever read it. The humans have already forgotten us. It's probably for the best."
He stretched and rose. He'd go visit the shrine on the Iyotushi estate tonight, he decided. Since he had returned, visiting Reiko's grave had become another habit. Seemingly by accident, he had ended up living only an hour's walk away.
Though I am not certain what I will do, now. Return to London, I suppose, for a little while.
That evening, he walked into the shrine overlooking the river. A young woman, fine-boned and very small, was standing on a stool, lighting lanterns. She heard his step behind her and turned, smiling. "Welcome, stranger."
Jeron stopped cold.
The girl's eyes were amber as topaz. He felt the prickle of her life force against his skin, like a subtle wind. She was kitsune, and from her raised eyebrow, she knew that he was Thrykreen. He bowed slightly, and went inside. The shrine attendants were usually human, though he supposed it made sense that a young kitsune might come here to serve a few years.
After paying his respects, he returned outside. The shrine attendant was standing at the torii, looking down at the river with a wistful expression on her face. He sat on a stone beside her. "How goes the hunting?"
She quirked her mouth in a small smile. "Well enough. Tell me, have we met before? You look familiar, though I can't place you."
"We might have. What's your name?"
"Ishimaru Kaede. I grew up in Skyhome, and my parents finally let me out into the world on the condition that I do a turn as a shrine attendant. I picked here, because it feels very peaceful to me."
"I haven't been to Skyhome since Panda died. That was--has it really been forty years now?" He looked over at her, and in the light from the lanterns saw something that he had missed before, a pure white streak in her black hair.
She saw where his glance went, and self-consciously patted the streak. "I was born with it. The priest said it was a sign that I had a troublesome last life. And, yes, it's been forty-five years since our Panda died. I'm only nineteen, so I never met her, though my parents are friends with her sons. What's your name?"
He hesitated. His name was legendary, and he felt a great reluctance to give it and possibly ruin the first good conversation that he'd had with one of the myobu since Reiko's spirit had left him. He couldn't bring himself to lie, so he said, truthfully, "Saruwatari Jeron."
The girl blinked. "Oh." She considered this, and her hands crept to the hems of her sleeves, fidgeting with them. The gesture was unconscious and so reminiscent of Reiko that Jeron's heart gave an unexpected twist.
Nonsense, he told himself. I need to stop looking for her in the face of every woman I meet. This is a pleasant girl, a pretty young kitsune, nothing more.
"I've heard stories of you my whole life. It's interesting to have the reality sitting beside me. You're not as tall as I thought you would be. The stories make you sound like you're a giant."
He chuckled. "Things get exaggerated. I'm a Thrykreen like any other, Kaede. I'm just a bit older than most."
Kaede tilted her head, considering this. "And you were a part of the Spirit War. And you knew Takumi Reiko. What was she like?"
He closed his eyes, remembering. "Small, smaller than you, even. Confused, much of the time. She held great sorrow within her, enough to almost drown her at times. She loved fiercely, and she was one of the bravest souls I've ever known. She died the death of a warrior, fighting for something she believed in."
"Is it true, that her spirit is still attached to you?"
Jeron shook his head. "A century to the day after she died, her spirit disappeared. I believe that she had finally worked out her sorrows, and was ready to move on--whether to another life, or to whatever afterworld waits for myobu."
"Ah. I'm sorry, Jeron."
An odd question occurred to him, and it came out of his mouth before he had time to think about it. "Tell me, do you have nightmares?"
Her eyes widened, and she stared at him. "I do. How did you know?"
"I don't know. What do you have nightmares of?"
Kaede looked down to the river, her eyes distant. "I dream of battles with demons who spit molten copper. I dream of sailing ships, of another kitsune dying because I could not protect her. I dream of standing in front of a man who I am terrified of, even though I don't know why I am. I dream I am walking naked on the deck of a ship, and a black-garbed man stops me from throwing myself into the ocean. I dream that my father tells me that I am no daughter of his--though my real father loves me dearly. And other things. I don't know why I dream these things; my life has been a happy one so far, and I count myself very blessed."
Jeron said, softly, "Perhaps they're just echoes of the past. Sometimes stories take on lives of their own. But I doubt it means anything, really. They're probably just nightmares."
"Probably."
He stretched and rose. "I must be off home. I do visit regularly, though, so I should see you again. It was good to speak with you, Kaede."
"Likewise. I'm glad to know there's another myobu living in the area. My parents would be pleased to know there's someone around who can keep me out of trouble."
He grinned briefly, the first evidence of the sense of humor he evidently kept well hidden flashing in his eyes. "I'm not so sure I'm the one to keep you out of it. Perhaps we could find some to get into, one of these days."
Kaede's eyes glittered with amusement. She watched the Thrykreen walked down the road and away from the shrine, murmuring to herself, "I think we may both be in trouble already, Jeron."
(Ishimaru Kaede and Saruwatari Jeron were married in April of 1704.)
