My teddy bear work made in response to the poem ‘Catrin’ by Gillian Clarke.

Influenced by the phrase ‘the red rope of love’, which describes the relationship between mother and daughter, their blood ties and shared love. The location of the rope in the bear represents the umbilical cord at birth and the first encounter between mother and daughter; another key concept to the poem. Whilst the rope also looks like the inner workings of the bear and its anatomy. The fairy lights add a childlike fun which supports the already existing relation that bears have to childhood.

 Idea for final exhibition - experimenting with placement 

For my final exhibition, I decided to create a series of hand sewn pieces that represented different areas of my project. I decided to incorporate some elements from my diary entry’s and story. The initial idea took its inspiration from Tracey Emin’s textiles pieces.

I really wanted to do something that involved text, as I had remained silent for years whilst I self destructed. I decided to use this opportunity to really express how I felt. I wanted the pieces to appeal to a wide audience as, there is no age limit to such trauma.

Ive incorporated arrows and triangles in my designs which represent ‘female lower anatomy. The arrows (also on the buttons), specifically point downward to represent its location on the body. 

I hope to have around 6-8 of these pieces complete, in time for the final exhibition.

The images above show me experimenting with placement, as I think about how I want to have them exhibited.

Tutorial with Jo - 9/4/19

I have recently been feeling like I’ve been forcing creativity, as the project deadline is rapidly approaching and I’m still unsure on what it is I want to exhibit. I now feel as though whatever I choose will not be a true representation of the message I’m trying to portray and all value will be lost.

To help make sense of my confusion, I decided to have a conversation with Jo. Jo selected a few pieces that I had completed in my sketchbook; and isolated them, so that we could see what they would look like away from the sketchbook. We quickly established new ways in which I could develop some of the pieces into final ideas, as well as how they could be presented. Below are a few notes taken during our discussion.

·     Perhaps do something with the collages I created.

-      Create more silhouettes and piece them together to create something unique but relevant to the project. Be strategic.

·      I could maybe enlarge two of the collages and have them as my final piece. ( exhibit as a pair).

·     Take a look at the artist Grayson Perry.

-      He tends to produce pieces that are attractive but on close inspection hold deep and dark meaning.

·     Do more with the textile pieces.

-      Create a few more and arrange them in a way that tells a story. Maybe even attach some of them together. ( if I don’t have a sudden epiphany and come up with something else).

·     If I include the footage of myself and my sister, having a discussion whilst we made clay sculptures, perhaps put it on a memory stick and place it in a plastic wallet along with a description of what the conversation was about.

·     When I record my poems , think about how I want the viewer to feel . ( pause in places / my voice is a tool , be creative).

·     Do I see the introductory outside of my sketchbook ?

-      Yes, but I would have to complete the story and sort out the pictures. ( tidy them up in photoshop and print them on nice paper, if I have time).

·      I could spray paint my stencils on the exhibition wall.( Experiment with scale , colour and texture).
