The Light in Ariel’s Grotto Comes From the Surface.
That’s all. That’s so cool and perfect. It has to be hidden, but it’s not a dark and gross place, because to Ariel, everything in it is beautiful. Because it comes from her beloved Surface.
Tumblr media
Of course, all light under the sea logically comes from the surface, that isn’t special. But in the rest of the ocean, the light from the surface is just generally dispersed so you don’t notice it. In her grotto, it’s not general—it’s focused on. The circular, tower-like shape of her grotto means all the attention is drawn up, to the surface, not just to the gallery of stuff she’s collected.
Tumblr media
The Surface is the light that Ariel can see everything in her grotto by. Just like how she sees everything differently than the others under the sea, because she’s been up to the surface before. Her perspective is different. She literally sees everything in a different light.
The set design for this part of the movie is so cool.

(I know it’s obvious but I feel like if we appreciated the obvious more often we would realize why these movies are so good)

every so often i remember the conversation about lighting in film and i get annoyed all over again
because the thing about film lighting is that film lighting is *expressive* and *subjective* and the fad for only using "believable" lighting to the point that scenes are invisible to the audience just blows right past that. the human eye isn't a camera! people can see in much lower lighting! if you only use the amount of light that would be present in a scene, you are frequently going to end up with a scene that is darker for the audience than it would be for the character IN the scene! that sort of darkness is just as artificial as theatrical light, but with the added bonus of not being able to see anything! argggggh
okay, i'm done, sorry about that

Rewatching LOTR and can’t stop thinking this is how you light a night scene. Goddamn.
Never thought 20+ years on we’d be watching (sometimes staggeringly) high-budget shows and movies in which you can’t see shit and struggle to hear the dialogue > 50 % of the time.

sometimes i think maybe i am tired of making films then a little thing will happen and suddenly i am foaming at the mouth again
it has been years since my school's film class got new equipment and after a year and a half of being in the class and using our old shitty way too hot lights, i got to be in the first group to use our brand new LED filming lights and they are so fucking cool and they're brighter than the old ones and we dont need heat protection to put them away and i was literally shaking with excitement like how could i ever not do this as a career

The light comes from the same place the music comes from. Everything is gonna be fine. Enjoy your popcorn.
I am totally willing to accept unexplained light sources in movies if that means those movies won't be dark as fuck for the 90+ minutes they run

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.
Edit: if you are able, use $5 you would otherwise use for a streaming subscription to donate to a GazaFunds campaign.

Subservience – A Twisted Tech Thriller with Megan Fox at Her Creepiest
In Subservience, Megan Fox delivers a standout performance, in a film that feels like Stepford Wives, Terminator, and iRobot all blended into one. Directed by S.K. Dale, this sci-fi thriller doesn’t just lean into the genre—it grabs hold and drags you through a wild ride of suspense, tech paranoia, and disturbing obsession. The plot revolves around a struggling father, played by Michele Morrone…
