Until Dawn Movie Announcement Thoughts
Moving over here because somehow Tumblr of all places is where I can more candidly put forth my Until Dawn movie reservations. Reddit is a bit touchy now.
Okay, am I happy this means there will be a resurgence in interest for the game? Absolutely. Totally. Stoked and on the hype machine.
But… a movie adaptation of what is already almost a movie except interactive? What do we gain in that? Like here are some immediate things that are hitting me:
1) It could just be boring because we’ve seen this… cinematically… before
2) You mess with the sensitivity that is making things more “canon” than other things because the source is choice based.
3) If everyone lives, that’s kinda an odd horror film (though at this point, I’m preferring this option). If anyone dies, fans will be inevitably pissed because you’re actively picking favorites, and it shows.
4) This isn’t old enough to get a new cast. Most people seem very attached to the old one (I super am). Like idk… it doesn’t feel right to recast this? I don’t like it. Especially for Josh like… does anyone think Rami Malek can be replaced in this role??? The problem is he was too perfect.
5) I’ve just been bitten so many times with new material in my fandoms reversing the effect of the old or weakening the original meaning/intention and I hate it and trust nothing new years later anymore.
6) Is this in place of a remaster or sequel because now I’m wondering if we could have had a remaster and now I’m bitter.
Like I’m going to stay semi-sane and optimistic because yay Until Dawn hype! I just want people to talk about it! And who knows, maybe the movie will just be og cast Until Dawn with extra focus on the astounding bond of friendship Josh, Chris, and Sam share and end with redemption for Wendigo Josh, rendering it literally the perfect movie! There could be gold here. But red flags. Red flags everywhere.

Omg super late ramble it’s so dumb but like idk if you guys heard that rumor/theory of that deleted gag ending to the s.cott p.ilgrim movie but tldr it’s basically just like those creepypasta ass stories @ the events being in S.cott’s head/his fantasy and it’s revealed HE ACTUALLY KILLED ALL OF R.AMONAS EXES IN COLD BLOOD 💀💀💀 Anyways explanation aside AND THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT CANON AT ALL CUZ OF HOW creepypasta it sounds/it has the same energy as ash Pokemon in a coma theory but it is kinda sad if you think about it for me X Gideon sake cuz . Not only did my brother kill all my friends (m.atthew/l.ucas/t.odd/r.oxie) BUT ALSO MY BOYFRIEND LIKE. It is sad and evil it is the bad ending and im kinda glad they didn’t film thsi ending cuz EVEN IF IT WAS A GAG I FEEL LIKE THATD BE TOO CRAZY. Plus it’s sad for ship reasons . Anyways it’s 2am I sleep now

I've been thinking a lot about Jossam lately, totally obsessed, and I've come up with some headcanons!
• Josh is a film enthusiast, and this is clear as a crystal. Just like that fact, he loves Sam. They say every artist has their muse, their inspiration—and for some, it's distant people, historical figures, or even actors or musicians. Josh is no different; he has his muse, and luckily for him, it's his sister’s best friend.
• Josh is an artist. He loves working on small film projects to tell little stories he's written. Of course, he always finds a way to get his friends involved, whether it’s Jess playing a Carrie remake or Emily as a masked killer... But none of them came close to being in as many projects as Sam. Josh always put Samantha Giddings in his films. She was always the lead, the final girl, the one who gets the guy at the end, the princess, the superhero—because that’s who she was and always had been to him, the protagonist of his life.
• Sam loved being part of those amateur films. She always thought Josh's artistic vision was beautiful, even if that wasn’t the reason she kept doing it. She loved listening to him talk about his ideas, loved how focused he became, loved hearing him go into detail about every little thing he had in mind. His mind fascinated her. She was in love with everything he did, in love with him, which, on its own, made everything he had to offer—even the "little things"—feel magical.
• One time, a town fair caught Sam’s attention. It was an animation competition, and when she read about it in the paper, the first person who came to mind was Josh Washington. Well, she was the girl who did the drawings, but he was the guy who handled everything else. Maybe it was her way of trying to spend more time with him. Maybe that feeling made her call him and tell him about it, and maybe it was his own desire to spend more time with her that made him agree instantly.
• They didn’t win first place in the competition, instead placing third and getting a silly plastic trophy for both of them. Regardless of the result, they were happy. Spending that time together was probably what they needed to understand their feelings for each other—even if they hadn’t admitted them yet. Everything seemed to be falling into place... until the anniversary of the twins’ disappearance came around, and with that... well, you know the story.

🔸The Girl In The Audience
by Patrick Lemieux
The band had agreed prior to this to allow the company Mobilevision to film them in concert. The resulting film would be toured by the company for paying audiences. Two special concerts were planned for November 24th and 25th for The Forum in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 19 year old Sarah Bernard had no idea that attending the concerts would result in her being immortalized on film.
“I attended both nights for the Montreal shows, and was fortunate enough to be up front both nights,” says Sarah, “My sister Cathy and her friend Christian Giddings got three tickets for both nights and invited me to go, as they knew I was a fan, so I was lucky in that sense.”
Sarah goes on to explain, “I had been a Queen fan since the mid-1970s, when I received my first Queen album. It was Sheer Heart Attack, and it was given to me as a gift. I would often listen to certain songs and associate them with certain memories in my mind, and listening to Killer Queen always reminded me of the first time I played the album and broke in my record player at my best friend’s house. The album that I played the most in the ‘70s, however, was probably A Day at the Races. I had seen Queen two times before the Montreal shows.
At the Montreal shows, Sarah was able to make her way to a priceless spot perfect for taking pictures. "I’m sure there were reserved spots up front for professional photographers and media people outside of the film crew, but most people around me were simply fans,” she says.
Throughout the concert film, which is edited together from both nights, Sarah can be glimpsed center stage in the audience, occasionally taking pictures. Unfortunately, she no longer has the photos she took at the shows. Sarah says, “They were not the greatest quality, but I was proud of them.”
Of the band’s performance, Sarah says of Freddie, “I recall thinking that he made it very hard to NOT watch him. He was a wonderful performer, and I was reminded of how incredibly he commanded the stage. It had been a few years since I’d seen them last, and I’d forgotten what a force he really was up there. In the two shows I’d seen before, I was not as close to the stage, but I was still enchanted by how he worked the crowd. It really was like he held us all in the palm of his hand. Like we were being manipulated, and we loved it! A feeling I’ve felt with very few other acts. Brian and Roger were just as swift and amazing as I’d remembered from the previous shows. Watching Roger drum was almost hypnotic! John always seemed like the quiet and reserved type in photos and magazines, but live on stage, he always shined!”
Sarah goes on to recall, “Towards the end of the first show, I had spent some time trying to get their attention for a wave or a smile, and I made eye contact with John who nodded at me and returned my smile, which made my night even better! I also remember getting goosebumps during a few numbers both nights and even in the two previous shows I’d seen. Most notably during, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’!”
At the end of “Love Of My Life,” the cameras captured a truly moving moment in Sarah’s reaction as she stands still and glassy-eyed amid the erupting audience around her. She remembers what was going through her mind in that moment, “Every time I heard ‘Love of My Life’, I felt a bit emotional. I had fallen in love with a man who I truly saw a future with, and who used to play a few songs to serenade me while we were dating. ‘Love of My Life’ was one of those songs, and both nights I can remember feeling like I was on the verge of very happy tears just thinking about my love. He was on my mind and in my heart at the time I was being filmed.”
Sarah didn’t know she specifically had been filmed in her moment of quiet reflection, “We did see the cameras at the shows, but I never really noticed them facing me. I assumed they were filming the crowd as a mass of people.”
“Those were my last two shows with Freddie”

Hello I kept forgetting to make this.
I've been needing an excuse to have a little resource of links and stuff for art. Cause my ADHD ass keeps forgetting. So I'm making it a post. I should mention most of my links are going to be 2D animation related because that's what I went to school for.
This is by no means exhaustive list. Feel free to reblog/reply with your own resources. They don't gotta be animation specific for the record.
The Big Ones:

Resources I don't got on me but are incredibly needed: "Hello, I am looking to do freelancing/contract work. How do I do my taxes?" Honestly business/legal advice in general is direly needed. I genuinely think any art curriculum should have at least one required business class because holy shit it is a major gap.
Also advice for animation jobs outside of TV/Film/Video Game animation. I know those are the things people think of when they think of animation, but it's also easy to get pigeonheld into thinking those are the only jobs (or the only *real* jobs) out there.

UNTIL DAWN OC | JOEY MCKINNON !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHE/HER, 18, 📍SALEM, OREGON. INTP. VIRGO.
CASTED WITH CAILEE SPAENY & WROTE BY ALYSSA
“it matters where you are…”
JOEY MCKINNON, best friend of josh washington and samantha giddings had been quietly pining for a certain blonde party girl for years. she met the girl in middle school, a few years after meeting josh and chris. she quickly grew close with sam, both quiet and often found themselves left in the corner at parties to their own devices. she soon found herself on the invite list to the annual blackwood getaway, and sat out on the prank after passing out with josh and chris.
A YEAR LATER… joey accompanies her friends back to the mountain after the tragic deaths of hannah and beth. joey tried to remain as close with josh as she could, but months with only one word responses had her bitting her nails down to the beds for her best friend. she was arguably the closest with josh, and spent countless nights at his house watching cheap horror movies with even cheaper special effects.
JOEY AND JESS’S relationship was rocky, to say the least, since the prank that had taken place a year before their reunion. despite her newfound relationship with mike, joey couldn’t help but find herself even deeper in the hole when she thought of her. most would never pick the two girls as friends, but they got along surprisingly well. joey was almost sure that with their current circumstances, she’d never find a moment to tell her friend how she really felt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHO IS JOEY MCKINNON?
JOEY is an 18 year old photographer, born and raised in salem oregon. her love of photography stemmed from her mother’s job as a local journalist, joey soon taking after her as the photographer for the yearbook and school newspaper. after the death of her mother in elementary school, she moved into the giddings residence. she soon met the washington’s, as well as their close friends.
HER BOARDING SCHOOL DAYS were much more lively than she once assumed, sneaking into jess’s room at night to watch her favorite rom coms and eat candy they’d snuck in from visits into town. she and josh took film class together, proudly working on their own horror film for their final project, starring sam.
DETAILS ! joey is an avid film watcher, horror being her favorite genre. some of her favorite’s being evil dead 2, i spit on your grave, christine, the reanimator, and the lost boys. she and josh love going to concerts, and have seen the smashing pumpkins, the maria’s, slowdive, and paramore. she also loves taking jess to drive online movies on the weekends and going on hikes with sam during their breaks.
NOTE ! wanted to say thank u for all the support lately & that i’m so excited to be bringing my oc to you <3 shoutout to @endofradio for the inspo to finally post joey bc ive been scheming her up for so long and cant wait to post more in depth about her relationship with the other characters!

June Reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon. Reviews below the cut.
A First Time For Everything by Dan Santat
A beautifully illustrated memoir of a shy, Asian American thirteen year old's first trip to Europe, in 1989. Dan is a painfully self-conscious kid, bullied at school despite his best efforts to slip invisibly through the school halls. But on a three week summer trips with a dozen other kids his age, some from his school and some from other states, he begins to find himself. This story is framed through a series of "firsts"- first time traveling without his parents, first time tasting Fanta, first cigarette, first alcoholic drink, first time navigating a city alone, first kiss, first time sharing his art with someone. The main narrative of the trip is woven through with flashbacks to particularly emotional past moments- asking a girl out, being romantically rejected, rejecting someone else, helping a girl out who had gotten her period unexpectedly. It captures the wretchedness of junior high, and the way traveling can teach people both about the world and themselves.
Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong
An impactful series of essays that circles around the meaning of "Asian American" sometimes in very broad strokes, sometimes narrowing to the author's specific experience as a bilingual Korean American writer who grew up in the Los Angeles area in the 80s and 90s. I really appreciated the mix of memoir and history, research and cultural critique. Topics range from therapy, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, racism in academia, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, stand up comedy, the 1992 LA riots, the way childhood is not allowed equally to white and POC kids, the film Moonrise Kingdom and the 1965 Civil Rights movement, shame, deconstructing the English language in poetry, the 2012 documentary Wildness about a trans bar scene in LA, intense female friendships in art school, the poet Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's life and death, activist Yuri Kochiyama, and what debt, if any, an Asian American writer and thinker owes to America. This is a book I can see myself re-reading in a couple years, and getting more from it on a second read; it's rich with quotes and references to other writers, artists and thinkers who have informed Hong's thoughts. Definitely recommend.
In Limbo by Deb JJ Lee
I'm not going to give this book a star rating, because it deals with some extremely heavy topics I have no experience with (multiple suicide attempts, physical abuse of a child by a parent). This memoir covers four years of the main character's life, all of high school. Korean American Jung Jin, who goes by Deborah or Deb at school, made most of her friends in orchestra in junior high. But in high school she falls out of love with violin and quits music to focus more time and energy into drawing. She floats through school, feeling disconnected from peers and family, especially her mother, who swings from supportive to volatile. Another main theme is friendship- a solid, long-term friendship which Deb neglects, and a shorter, intense friendship that consumes Deb's emotional world until it falls apart. This is a story of quiet survival, of incremental steps towards healing, balance, and self actualization. Like life, it is somewhat loose in structure, but the illustrations are stunning.
The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings read by Angel Pean
Set in a world similar to but one step sideways from our current world, this story follows Jo, a creative, biracial, bisexual woman trapped by the restrictions of her society. In this US, women are under constant suspicion of witchcraft, a crime that can still be punish by public burnings. Women who aren't married by 30 are especially suspected, and have to check in with a counselor bi-weekly, and risk losing their jobs, freedom, and ability to have their own bank accounts or own property. Jo is 28, and while she is causally dating, she has no interest in marriage. She has a hard time believing that love can even exist under the pressures placed on women. It doesn't help that her mother disappeared when Jo was 14, and during the investigation, she was questioned by witch hunters. It's been 7 years and Jo's father decides it's finally time to declare Jo's mom officially dead. This ends up opening up a clause in her will that requests Jo travel to a island in the middle of one of the Great Lakes on a very specific day in autumn and collect a certain fruit that only grows there... This book is so skillfully written, for the first half I was left wondering if magic really did or did not exist; it could just be the excuse that men used to oppress women, queer people, and people of color. But then the book takes a really Kelly Link or Octavia Butler-like twist in the middle and gets weirder and wilder. Highly recommend, especially the audiobook.
How A Mountain Was Made: Stories by Greg Sarris
A collection of short stories by long time Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, Greg Sarris; a writer I've been hearing about for years and am finally sitting down to read! These stories are all set around the Sonoma Mountain and Cotati, very close to where I grew up, and I loved being able to picture the foggy mornings, the many oaks, the quail, poppies, lupine, hawks, coyotes, and creeks in these stories. The book has a frame narrative of two crow sisters, Question Woman and Answer Woman, who introduce each story and also appear as characters in one. The stories are interwoven, nearly all set in the village by Copeland Creek where Coyote lives as headman with his wife Frog, his cousin Chicken Hawk, and his many neighbors. The stories use a lot of the kind of repetitive language that lends itself to memorization; I honestly didn't feel like sitting down and reading the book cover to cover wasn't the best way to experience them. It might have been better to flip the book open to a random story and read whichever one caught my eye, especially to read it out loud, either to myself or to a young listener. Maybe I'll get an opportunity to read it that way sometime to a nibling.
The Two Doctors Gorski by Isaac Fellman read by Helen Laser
Annae is a PhD student, a brilliant researcher, and a survivor of academic abuse. She is forced to leave the US when her former mentor claims her research and ruins her name (after sleeping with her). They work in a small field, advanced magic so complex it feels almost more like science, so Annae transfers to a university in the UK to complete her degree. There she finds herself in a cohort of entirely male graduate students under a famous but cruel teacher. Her main defense mechanism and invasive habit is reading minds, a kind of compulsive act that lets her see how her peers view her, and themselves. Unsurprisingly, these insights bring her no peace; Annae tries to rebuild her research, but urge to fall into the same traps as her role models is strong. This is a novella, only about 4 hours as an audiobook, and fairly open ended but I'm still thinking about it.
The Wolf at the Door by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
In this contemporary murder mystery/romance novel, werewolves exist and have always lived in small numbers around the world. A few years before this story starts werewolves outed themselves to the US government in order to better liaison with law enforcement to address werewolf-human crimes, but the general public still does not know werewolves exist. Cooper Dayton survived a werewolf attack, and is subsequently transferred from his former job at the FBI into the BSI, the Bureau of Special Investigation. When two bodies turn up in the woods in rural Maine, Agent Dayton is chosen for a trial program, and he is paired up with an agent from The Trust, the werewolf government. Dayton is attracted to his new partner, Agent Park, immediately- but when it turns out Park's family is active in the area of the murder, Dayton realizes he can't rule out the possibility that his co-worker might be actively covering for the criminal. This book starts an enjoyable paranormal romance series complete with plenty of spice but also very solid procedural mysteries. I was glad to be able to guess some parts of, but not all of, the mystery as it unfolded and I also thought the romance novel beats hit well!
The Wolf at Bay by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
At the start of this second installment in my new favorite paranormal romance/murder mystery series, Agent Cooper Dayton and Agent Oliver Park of the Bureau of Special Investigations have been sleeping together for 4 months but still have not defined their relationship. Some of their miscommunications stem from cultural misunderstandings, but more of it comes from them both being too gun shy to be the first one to say "I love you." Meanwhile, Cooper takes Oliver to meet his family in the small town of coastal Maryland where he grew up- introducing Oliver only as his partner at work, because Cooper's family don't know he is gay and also don't know werewolves exist. Then a 25 year old skeleton is uncovered on the Dayton family property, and Cooper and Oliver have to set aside their other issues to solve the cold case, which might implicate one or both of Cooper's parents. A very enjoyable second book which manages to avoid a lot of the things that often bug me in romance novels and develops the relationship in satisfying ways.
The Mermaid, The Witch and The Sea by Megan Tokuda-Hall
Evelyn, the closeted lesbian teen daughter of nobles in an oppressive and strict empire, sets to sea aboard the Dove on a six month voyage to meet the husband her parents have chosen for her. On the Dove she meets Florian, a sailor her own age she who she befriends despite his lack of education and rough manners. But what Evelyn doesn't know is that Florian is also Flora, an orphan who joined the crew out of desperation and killed a man in cold blood to earn her place. And also- the ship is crewed by pirates, who plan to take all of the passengers as slaves. They have also committed a crime against the very sea itself: the capture of a mermaid with intent to sell it's blood, which men drink to forget. This is a dangerous and violent world, but the connection between Evelyn, Florian/Flora and the mermaid might be enough to save them all, with the help of some cleverness, bravery, magic, and love. This book had some tonal shifts that I struggled with, but I deeply appreciated the multifaceted queer rep.
Thrown to The Wolves by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
The third book in the werewolf/detective romance series I've been wolfing down on audiobook. In this installment, Cooper Dayton, human BSI agent, is still heaving from the wounds of his previous case when Oliver Park, werewolf BSI agent, learns that his grandfather and head of the pack he abandoned several years ago died. Oliver asks Cooper to come with him to the funeral, and Cooper agrees, having no idea what he's getting into. The couple narrowly avoids a deadly car-crash on the way up to the family mansion in Canada, where Cooper learns that even though Oliver's family is fine with him being gay they are not really fine with him dating a human. Several of Oliver's relatives very explicitly try to scare Cooper off, then he's shot with a tranquilizer in what may or may not be an accident, then it turns out that Oliver's grandfather might not have died of natural causes. Amongst all this chaos, will Cooper decide the wolf world is just too much and that he needs to back away from it? Or will be just dive in even deeper? Even though I could easily guess the answer, I am still very hooked and will definitely read more!
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Seraphina is the assistant composer to the royal family of Goredd, which means she lives in the castle and spends her days auditioning new musicians, leading rehearsals, performing at state functions and giving the vivacious, whip smart, slightly spoiled princess her weekly harpsichord lessons. In two weeks, the most important dragon general will be visiting the capital city to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the peace treaty between humans and dragons which he negotiated with the current human queen. But then one of the members of the royal family is killed, and some people start pointing the finger at dragons; tensions begin to rise in the city as anti-dragon mobs attack a young dragon traveling the city in his human form. Amidst this tension, Seraphina is even more desperate to keep her longest and darkest secret: that she is half dragon, and carries hidden scales, maternal dragon memories, and a mental link with other powerful beings. This was such an original take on a dragon fantasy, with a rich and complex world, characters that I immediately cared for and rooted for. I'm definitely going to keep reading this series!
Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
Human boyfriend Cooper Dayton and his werewolf boyfriend Oliver Park are trying to buy a house together; but their aesthetic sense of what makes an inviting home is vastly different, and neither of them are communicating their needs well to the other. How convenient that their next case for The Trust, the werewolf government, involves them going undercover to a couple's retreat where they will investigate a missing person report while also doing bonding exercises and couple's therapy. Will Cooper finally acknowledge that he was PTSD? Will Park admit their massive family wealth disparity could be a source of tension between them? Will they manage to figure out the link between a threatening park ranger, a local lumber mill owner who wants to buy the land the wolf retreat is built on, not one but two missing employees, the mysterious research of a wolf scientist (who may have experimented on his own children), a wolf pack leader showing up at the retreat unexpectedly? This installment continues the development of the central relationship while also fleshing out the lore and intricacies of the wolf world.

I watch Pride and Prejudice (2005) and before every line my brain provides what it's gonna be, since I've seen it so many times , and yet. AND YET. Once the characters do say the actual line I get filled with a sense of gid (back-formation of giddy, for the linguistic girlies) and I lose my shit as if it's the first time . Gottamn films sure do be leaving their immortal footprints don't they

Tom Hiddleston Q&A for 'Loki': T. S. Eliot's poetry as inspiration for the series (2023.11.21)
In the interview Tom talks about how he used T. S. Eliot's poetry as inspiration for the series. You can watch the SAG-AFTRA Q&A here.
Tom also gave the Four Quartets to Natalie Holt: "And on the set, when I was there in Pinewood filming, I got to chat to Tom. He was on the end of filming his part, and then I was starting the journey of the music, so we had this really lovely conversation," said Holt. "He gave me a book of poetry that had inspired him on Season 2. So, yeah, it was just great. He was saying, “Oh, I'd love to email you some thoughts that I've had, just if they might be useful.” She went on to say, "It's a T.S. Eliot book, the Four Quartets. It’s about time. Tom's a very thoughtful actor and thoughtful man, and I think he put so much into the character. He's a producer on the show, so just a big hand in how the show is, is due to Tom, I think."
I: "Burnt Norton"
“Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past."

Ed Harris has publicly refused to speak about his experiences working on "The Abyss" (1989), saying, "I'm not talking about 'The Abyss' and I never will." One of the few things he said about it was "Asking me how I was treated on 'The Abyss' is like asking a soldier how he was treated in Vietnam." Similarly, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio said, "'The Abyss' was a lot of things. Fun to make was not one of them."
Cast members had to become certified divers before filming began. The Deepcore crew started training together in the Caribbean one month before filming, in order to create a sense of camaraderie. Harris was not among them, as he was still filming another movie, so he got his certificate while training in a lake nearby. The actors playing the SEALs received a separate, military training. At the end of the shoot, Harris was the most accomplished diver (near-professional level) despite not having trained a single day in the actual ocean.
During underwater filming, Harris almost drowned a few times. One time was while filming the scene where he had to swim without a suit at the bottom of the submerged set, and the safety diver took very long to hand him a breathing regulator. However, the closest call came during the descent into the Abyss. Harris was wearing a helmet filled with liquid, and had to hold his breath while he was towed along a set. When he ran out of air, he gave the signal for oxygen, but his safety diver got hung up on a cable and could not get to him. Another crew member gave Harris a regulator, but it was upside down and caused him to suck in water. Underwater cinematographer Al Giddings saw what happened, ripped the upside down regulator, and gave him his own in the correct orientation. Later that evening, Ed broke down and cried.
The studio was considering Mel Gibson, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Harrison Ford, Kurt Russell and Patrick Swayze for the role of Virgil 'Bud' Brigman. Cameron suggested Ed Harris, but the studio was concerned about his lack of experience as leading man, as well as his receding hairline (something that Cameron felt added to his everyman appeal). Harris convinced the studio with a screen test where he wore a motorcycle helmet as a diving helmet. (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Ed Harris!

BACKGROUND —
gideon was born to starving artists; his mother was a musician, and his father was a writer.
his parents worked hard to provide a good life for their family, though at the same time, they never forgot to chase their dreams and put happiness above wealth.
they moved to new york when gideon was six years old, and there gideon found himself living a perfect life.
above everything else that kept gideon busy, he cherished his time playing music with his mother, and coming up with ideas for his father’s latest books.
unfortunately, gideon’s perfect life was cut short at the age of thirteen, when his father passed in a sudden and unprecedented accident.
to say that gideon was lost is an understatement; he experienced his first terrible bout of mental health issues, and the despair felt endless.
it didn’t last forever, no matter how bleak life felt at times; his mother was of particular help to him, as was reading through his father’s work - the ideas they had come up together, but that his father had never been able to realise into a completed novel.
life carried on, and gideon kept his father in his life by becoming fixated on his work. as a young adult, gideon began to dabble in completing his father’s work, and thus, gideon’s writing career began.
over the course of some years, gideon had three novels - a fiction trilogy - published ( sure to credit his father for his contribution ) and met with success, he felt as though he had never been happier.
like before, though, the happiness didn’t last. without his father’s books to complete, gideon found himself losing purpose - no matter how many great things he still had in his life - and his mental health issues returned.
he thought the solution was to keep on writing, but no matter how hard he tried, no inspiration hit enough for him to complete any other work.
gideon tried for a very long time - he still does try, in fact - but he lost his spark, and submitted to a job at the library instead, something he felt would make him feel closer to his father again.
WANTED CONNECTIONS —
best friend - this is a ride or die connection, they could have been friends as young as six, when gideon moved to new york, and they’re thick as thieves. they’ve been there for gideon through everything ( and there’s been a lot ) and vice versa ! any gender, similar age preferred.
childhood friends - they became friends as kids here in new york, and no matter how much they developed and changed and grown, they’ve stayed friends because of that. i think it’d be real funny if they were super opposite people, and if people had no idea why they’re even friends. any gender, similar age required.
regulars at the library - people who trust his opinions on what books they should check out, people who talk with him for far longer than they should while he’s working about books - or other stuff ! -, people who get their fees for overdue returns disappearing because they’re such nice people to gideon.
ex love interests - gideon was in a serious relationship for the past few years, but before that he also had a few other partners. he’s not the most experienced because he’s quite reserved with his love, but he’s a very good partner when his insecurities and mental health issues aren’t preventing him from being one. any gender !
book club - i’m not sure if this is an already established thing in this group yet or not, but gideon is definitely part of a book club. he wouldn’t have started it, but he would have joined it years ago and committed to it as anything literary related makes him feel closer to his father. he never misses a meet !
musician friends - while he might seem more literature focused due to his career, gideon is an extremely good musician, and i’d love for him to connect to others here in new york. he only typically plays for fun, jamming by himself or with these friends, but i could also see him jumping in on tracks or performances as a session musician when needed / when a friend asks !
gideon is also open to so much more, i'm happy to brainstorm or listen to any / all of your ideas !
