I just realized that at this time, 10 years ago, I was obsessed with:
Hook & Emma (Once Upon a Time)
Juliette & Avery (Nashville)
And it's so nice to have a few ships that actually got a happy ending! Love you babies. You're doing great!

Veronica Mars
Tumblr media
I love a lot of procedurals, but this one found me at 19 and stole my soul. I love Kristen so much and refuse to accept that the final few minutes of season 4 exists. This is my ultimate rewatch, s1 all the way through. (Still haven't finished s4 though because of its ending).
2. Castle
Tumblr media
Again. 19. Found this one in the same year, found out it was a crime procedural with a writer as the protagonist. SIGN ME THE FUCK UP.
3. Law and Order (original recipe)
Tumblr media
I've only seen from s13 on because of the limitations with NBC streaming options, but I do love Jack. Dick Wolf found lightning in a bottle with this franchise.
4. Criminal Minds
Tumblr media
(have we sensed a theme here yet?)
Guess when I found this one? (Still 2011.) My mom loved Shemar Moore on Y&R when I was a kid, so starting this one was easy. She doesn't get into the borderline gore and horror of CM though, so she'll really only watch the lighter episodes. Me? Seen everything up through 15 (school and work have kept me too busy for 16 yet).
5. 9-1-1
Tumblr media
SOMETHING FROM AFTER 2011?! Found this one in the pandie. My best friend was watching it (we'd talked about it a few times from what I recall), and I know my mom was already into it and I had plans to watch it, but I was already in school, and 2019/20 was rough on my mental health between my job closing its doors, the pandemic starting, and me being back in school. Buck has literally always been my favorite. He's who I relate to most, and given the focus I put into the most recent rewatch, it's obvious why. We have a lot of things in common, both personality-wise and with childhood trauma. That all said, I've had spurts and starts with this baby. Started it in 2020, got caught up. Went through the mess of school taking over my life and falling off here and there, playing catch-up. I know I was fairly caught up in season 6, but post-infection with the brain damage, I kinda had to do the full rewatch this year.
6. Grey's Anatomy
Tumblr media
Quite literally grew up with this one. My aunt told my mom, who told us, and then by season 3, the whole family was watching. I fell off for a beat when Mark died (he was my favorite), but then really fell off when Derek died. Only started playing catch up when I found out about Nick and the fact that Ellen wanted to leave the show. I knew they'd give her a happy ending (of sorts), which drove me to watch everything I'd missed (plus my mom still watched even when I quit, so I knew about Deluca, who she loved).
7. Nashville
Tumblr media
Loved this one basically from the jump. Anything with music has the opportunity to steal my soul. It's also one of the reasons I can't get into the hate for Abby on 9-1-1. This show made me loved Connie Britton too much.
8. Schitt's Creek
Tumblr media
So this one 😂😂😂 I think I started Schitts Creek three(?) separate times? Never got into it. The humor was too dry, I didn't really feel anything about it all, and...idk. It was just not my cup of tea.
And then my life went to shit 😂😂😂 In all seriousness though, this was one of those shows that I can point to and say "this one saved me". The way it made me laugh in the face of some really unimaginable pain and an existential crisis is something I will never forget. Definitely due for a rewatch this summer.
9. One Tree Hill
Tumblr media
So. I started this show in season 2. Went out of my way to watch it after starting The OC halfway through both shows inaugural seasons. Literally everyone I knew didn't give two craps about this show then. They didn't care when it was nearly cancelled after season 4, and how hard the fans fought for season 5. Most of them didn't even really care after season 6 when CMM and Hilarie Burton were cut from the show. Nah, most of the people I know found OTH when it hit streaming a few years ago. I have complicated feelings about it now, given what we know about how MS treated the girls, and all of the trauma inflicted on them. I know that SB, HB, and BJL all support us still watching, but it's rough for me to contend with that even so.
10. Pretty Little Liars
Tumblr media
So..... I haven't watched this since it ended. It started when I was 17/18, so I was easily sucked in by the teacher/student concept and fell in love with Ezria. I also had watched American Juniors and knew who Lucy was (and subsequently lusted after her making music for AGES; still do). However, being a full-fledged adult now with babies in school (my niece is in HS now), I can't justify how problematic this ship is.
BONUS:
11. Instant Star
Tumblr media
Soooo a generous chunk of people know who Tim Rozon is now because of Schitts Creek and Wynona Earp, but have they seen this baby? Because I started this one after remembering Alexz Johnson from So Weird when she eneded up on IS in 2004. This was the show that got me through the end of of middle school and into high school, and I still listen to the music occasionally. I've done a few rewatches of it as an adult, and while I still don't like the age difference, these two at least waited until she was 18.

I love starting TV shows well after they've ended. I'm currently watching Nashville, season 1 and I love it so far though it's freaking me out how much Teddy and Rayna look like siblings, they look like twins 😂
I also think the names for the lead characters are weird or don't fit the actors. Rayna, really? And why did they have to write it like that? RaYna JaYmes is a r/tragedeigh, I'm sorry. Also, Tandy? Teddy doesn't look like a Teddy, with his fine, cold boring self. I'm really confused by those names.
I already hate Peggy Kenter.

Similarities between Buck and Will Lexington's (Nashville) storylines:
Buck and Will are both very close to their best friends, who are Straight (Will even kissed Gunnar once but now they joke about it), but it has always been made clear that there was nothing romantic between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same for Buck and Eddie who are bery close but it has been made clear there is nothing romantic between them.
At some point Will, Gunnar and Avery were all living under the same roof, helping Avery take care of his daughter, just like Buck helps Eddie with Chris.
Buck and Will both found silly excuses to spend more time with their crush (respectively Tommy and Kevin). Will saying his and Kevin's song wasn't good enough so he could keep working with Kevin. And Buck trying to get invited to the basketball game and when it didn't work with Eddie he tried with Chimney.
When Buck and Will thought their plan had failed, both Kevin and Tommy came unannounced to their houses to have a heart to heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then Buck and Will both confessed their feelings and explained that their stupid behavior was due to them having a crush on them and then they shared a very romantic and sensual kiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The similarities end there because where Will was Gay and closeted at the beginning of their relationship, Buck is Bi and came out quite quickly after he started to date Tommy but Will and Kevin have always been pne of my favorite couples and one of the reason is the softness and beauty of their first kiss.
I saw that softness and beauty again in Buck and Tommy's scenes in episode 4.
Does anyone even remember Nashville??

THE PERMANENT RAIN PRESS INTERVIEW WITH ROYAL SUGAR
Tumblr media
It’s been a creative birth over the past couple of years for glam rock/pop duo Royal Sugar. Comprised of Tyler Cohenour (lead singer, guitars) and Garrett Carr (bass, vocals), the Nashville-based pair is making up for lost time since their collaborative start over five years prior. They’ve built their live performance and are eager to play for audiences, timed well with their gripping new single, “Fleeting Love.”
You’ve called yourselves “musical soulmates.” Do you recall your initial meeting in college, and how you developed and strengthened your friendship?
I remember meeting Garrett like it was yesterday. A mutual friend brought him over to my college apartment at 1am on a Friday night for an unannounced pop-in. I answered the door in my towel, we sat down and sang some Steve Miller Band, and right then and there I was mesmerized by his voice and our immediate connection with harmony and humor. I knew I had to lock him down and start a band with him. The next week he moved into my apartment and we started writing together. We’ve been singing and writing together ever since.
You had a working relationship that started in 2016 but Royal Sugar was officially born in 2021. Tell us about your decisions to put a name on your project, and why it was the right time?
Our hiatus from playing live during COVID really brought about a lot of creative shifts in our writing and new energy surrounding what we truly wanted to do. We’ve always wanted to start a glam rock band and after coming out of that hiatus, we realized how precious music was to us and we felt like kids again. We wanted to be in a fun, flashy, rock band. So we started one.
Tyler, you’ve faced challenges with your immune disorder. If comfortable, can you share how it’s impacted your life, and especially your career as a musician? To other artists and creators who are going through difficult times medically, what message do you have for them?
Having an immune disorder while being in a touring band “during a pandemic” doesn’t necessarily sound like the recipe for success, but I truly believe that time away from touring brought about this energy we’re feeling now and this complete renewal of our sound. Music has always been my haven and my therapy, and to be able to be in a band with my best friend; to share it with the world makes everything worth it.
I never gave up on that passion I had inside during the dark times and I don’t think anyone ever should. There’s a reason you feel compelled to create and there’s a reason it becomes your therapy in the tough times. Always chase that feeling. I had to move back to Florida for two years to isolate during the pandemic, but Garrett stuck by me. We wrote over Zoom and the second I got back... Royal Sugar was born.
“Fleeting Love” is moody and fantastic. It’s about toxic relationships and the ease in being pulled back towards another. How was the writing process? Is it very collaborative between you two?
Thank you so much! The writing process for this one and all of our songs has always been freakishly telekinetic for us. We’ve both been through toxic relationships in our past lives and it was time to bring those feelings to life through our new sound. I think as human beings we place so much stock in the initial dopamine rush and yearn to experience it again once it’s worn off. It becomes toxic when you realize the risk and take it anyways. You experience the pain, because it’s the only conduit you have to the pleasure of the past. Unfortunately, it’s a fool’s errand.
What emotions did you want to portray in the sound, and tell us about the instruments and production choices you made for “Fleeting Love.”
It’s definitely a solemn affair. To me, it feels like the sonic representation of the fear of being alone. We wanted to capture the intensity of these feelings and also their juxtaposition. Starting with a clean, solemn guitar riff and crescendoing into an expansive chorus of synths, organs, and distorted guitars. I.E. The push and the pull of pain and pleasure.
youtube
What details can you share about the music video, and how it came together?
We were so fortunate to be able to film at Vu Studios in Nashville in front of this incredibly massive LED wall. It felt like a dream: fog, strobe lights, animations. A friend of ours, Ryan Mclemore, directed and edited the video and absolutely captured the emotions we felt when writing this song. The trippy-ness, the heartbreak, the euphoria.
You have an electric modern pop/glam rock sound and a 70’s and 80’s fashion style. It’s fresh but also an homage to acts like Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard. How would you describe your style (hair and heels included!)?
We’re definitely heavily influenced by ‘70s glam artists like David Bowie, T-Rex, Elton John. As well as ‘80s rock artists such as Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. And our mutual love for modern pop choruses and synths is what really brought this particular blend together and created our sound. As for the style, I would describe it as equal parts leather, glitter, hairspray, and heels high enough to reach shin-split status.
Your first single was a cover of Harry Styles’ “Medicine.” Why this song, and how has Styles inspired you as artists and performers?
We attended the Harry Styles show here in Nashville back in 2018 and heard him perform it live. We had never heard the song before, but felt like that song spoke to us the most in the set. It felt exactly like the sound we were chasing as a band. We were in awe of how a modern-rock ‘n roll song could resonate with a young audience, the energy was palpable!
When we found out it had never been released we thought it could be a cool way to make it our own and share it with others, like us, who just wanted to be able to enjoy the upbeat arrangement and ensnaring lyrics.
You have Jordan Arnold and Jack Devine join you on drums and guitar for your live performances. What can you say about them, and how you’ve been building your live shows and stage presence?
One of the things that makes Nashville such an amazing city as an artist, is the massive pool of extremely talented, dedicated, and hard-working musicians. We had a specific sound and level of vivacity in mind for Royal Sugar live. After a lot of searching, we found these two guys that perfectly fit the profile. We've spent a lot of time working out the live show and are loving the way they embody the Royal Sugar rock ‘n roll ethos.
You’re very active on TikTok. How has this platform helped you, and have you found what works for you with content creation?
TikTok has been a huge piece of the puzzle for us finding and connecting to our audience. We had our doubts about the app initially because we didn't quite understand it. Once we started spotlighting our creative process and performance on the app, we were shocked to see how many people out there were looking for this kind of new high-energy rock ‘n roll. We had a lot of fun with it and feel really grateful for the audience we've connected with through the app.
Tumblr media
How do you stay creative and engaged on social media?
We try to never take anything too seriously and have fun with what we create. Everything we make whether it be music videos, original songs, sketches, etc. we are intentional about always remaining authentic. Having a lighthearted approach keeps it fun for us and our followers.
You’re based out of Nashville. What are some of your recommended places to visit?
We love a good night out on the town in Nashville. There's never a night the city tucks in early without a bit of fun and wildness, which can be a dangerous thing at times. We've had many fond and somewhat hazy memories of experiencing all that Nashville has to offer. For a lively cocktail atmosphere, we've found ourselves hanging out at Pearl Diver in East Nashville an innumerable amount of times. We also love going to dinner and burlesque at Skull’s Rainbow Room.
What can listeners expect from Royal Sugar in 2023?
Expect to see us playing live a lot in 2023! We miss performing and traveling so much and feel completely reinvigorated after this live show and touring hiatus. We plan to release a lot more of the songs we've recorded and continue writing for our full-length record.
Our signature question: if the band (collectively) could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?
Sweet Espresso Fudge Swirl - something sweet with enough caffeine to provide a euphoric amphetamine rush. Organic and dairy free to not exclude anyone from enjoying!
-
Thanks to Tyler for answering our questions, and providing us with insight into all things Royal Sugar! To keep updated with the band’s releases and live shows, visit them on Spotify, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.

Nashville 🎸
Tumblr media
I grew up listening to country music, but overtime I've gotten where I really can't stand it. However, the music and plot of this one tv show have always captivated me. Nashville aired on ABC from 2012-2016 and continued to air on CMT from 2016-2018. The series is about fictional country music stars and the industry as a whole in Nashville.
For six seasons, Nashville spotlighted the harsh music industry, wove controversial issues into the dramatic plot, and gave us some pretty amazing songs. Granted, most of the music was country for obvious reasons, but watching the plot unfold with each song as their backdrop, seeing the songwriting used as a therapeutic part of each character's life made the music more enjoyable and the show more exciting to watch.
Tumblr media
Watching Nashville takes a certain kind of stamina. It's dramatic, controversial, and often depressing, which means that this show is definitely not for everyone. This show covers things such as addiction, post-partum depression, miscarriage, LGBTQ+ inequality, racial inequality, assault, abuse, and stalking. The amount of drama alone makes it difficult to stand at times, but if you enjoy watching shows like Grey's Anatomy or The Fosters, then Nashville may be a good fit for you.
I watched Nashville when it was on air so I never watched many episodes back to back, which I really think is the best way to watch a show with this much going on. I rewatched the show in 2020 and binged it that time. While I didn't think it was too exhausting to binge, I also already knew everything that happened.
Tumblr media
Nashville has a lot of characters who all have different backstories. The show jumps from character to character and ties them all together in different ways. The two main characters, Rayna and Juliette, are rivaling country music stars. Rayna has been in the industry for decades and is considered the queen of country music. Juliette is a young, new country star who's flashy style and sound threaten to change the industry Rayna has shaped.
The differing old and new concept reflect in the characters' relationships and strangely mimic each other in many cases. For example, when Rayna was becoming famous she met Deacon, who became her songwriting partner, lead guitarist, and long-lost love. Now that Juliette is where Rayna was all those years ago, viewers get to watch her meet Avery who becomes her loyalist supporter and friend as well as lead guitarist and songwriter.
Aside from the lives of the main four characters, lesser known artists who really deserve more than they get are Will, Gunnar, and Scarlett. Will and Gunnar are best friends who come to Nashville together to follow their dreams. Gunnar and Scarlett meet and become an ultimate songwriting duo the industry comes to recognize as the next Deacon and Rayna.
Nashville is a fun watch that easily grabs your attention from the start. I always love going to Nashville and seeing things that were shown in the series and listening to the music driving down backroads. This show provides a lot of insight on the music industry and life as a music star. If you're ever taking a trip to Nashville, I would recommend watching at least some of this show beforehand as it does represent the city in a pretty accurate fashion.
I give Nashville a good 8/10. ✨B
