SUBSTACK POST: TVDOPES

One of my more personal posts. Not autobiographical but basically an origin story for "Revolutionary_Jack" and "Jack Elving" and from whence he came. This post is driven by self-examination and self-criticism. I was an active poster on tvtropes for years under multiple identities, where I evaded bans. I was always hoping to get back in, but now I realize I'd rather tell the story instead. This post has me admitting to stuff I'd otherwise not admit but I feel it's important that I get this out there. While I do nothing criminal or morally disgraceful, ethically it's more than a little sketchy. So here it is.

TVT Adminpocalypse

TW: transphobia, acephobia, bullying, suicide

Hey, for those of you not aware, TV Tropes has gotten very bad in the last six or so months. I'll do my best to give a short summary.

2022: Fighteer, a mod notorious for using his post to bully others, takes a self-imposed leave after several users call him out on this pattern of behavior. Due to user backlash at general moderator behavior, a mod code of conduct was established. While self-enforced, the moderator discussion thread existed, in part, to discuss future incidents.

September 2023: User AgProv is suspended for calling Dylan Mulvaney a man. In his appeal, he tries to get around the issue by using they/them pronouns. Though Mulvaney uses both she/her and they/them, as this appeal was clearly done in bad faith, AgProv had been bounced from the site. A few hours later, however, Kory, a site programmer, unilaterally overrides the bounce on behalf of otherwise non-present site owners, citing he was a productive user with several edits. When called out on this, Kory doubled down, using thumps and suspensions to shut down conversation. Notably, AgProv was later suspended for messy editing, but to this day has not needed to appeal his transphobia suspension through the typical process.

Later that month: Fighteer is asked back by the admins, citing a need for manpower. Fighteer's "apology" amounts to being burnt out and justifying his meanness as being an "equal opportunity" bad cop. He promises to step back from areas of the site where he'd been an issue previously. This does not last. By the end of this one-two punch, the moderator discussion thread is reworked into a narrow policy clarification thread with issues of misconduct being exclusively handled by emailing the admins.

Past seven days: Fighteer makes a post in the social media thread stating that people threatening suicide over a possible TikTok ban should just do it. In another post, he considered this an act of terrorism. These post were thumps, but no other visible disciplinary action was taken. This is despite the US Politics thread being closed for celebrating the death of Henry Kissinger. Again, attempts at discussion were swiftly shut down. Notably, Kory all but stated that Fighteer, despite all the issues, was worth having as a mod.

So for anyone reading, consider spreading the word. While that alone won't fix the underlying problem of private tech companies pushing for content at the expense of user experience, if enough people, and especially, advertisers, catch wind of this, it may create enough of a PR disaster where the administrators will change course rather than quintuple down. For anyone who, understandably, does not wish to do that, then please, if you haven't already, get an ad blocker and make sure it's on for that site.

What's the story behind Google and Tvtropes? What was Google's effect on the site?

Google is the reason TV Tropes began to have a crackdown on anything pertaining to NSFW. Their AdSense program is what killed the Naughty Tentacles trope page, and eventually most content pertaining to adult fiction.

When Fighteer took over the reigns, the gradual shift in user ideology made it easier for the site to essentially enact a full-blown content purge, which is what led to attempts to start separate wikis (such as All The Tropes) and try to save everything being taken down.

Nowadays, it's a fucking miserable place to go, because half the pages you go to in both forum and works are full of talking heads who cannot turn off the dumb "ew gross" mentality that's been drilled into their skulls, and the other half full of staff and mods who have little-to-no patience and nuance to accept how the world works.

Excusing Samantha Bee’s Actions

Yeah, when our side does it then it’s justifiable, especially if it’s for a good cause. These people are full of shit. And if you argue against those points, asshole Fighteer will probably suspend you for being disruptive but I think he really has a stick up his asshole. Also Samantha Bee attacked the wrong person, because if you think Ivanka has to shoulder her father’s responsibility then think again.

F*ck TV Tropes as they unfairly banned me from the site for falsely ban evading for a suspended username that is not mine. As I talk to them on email in polite and honest manner yet they reject me and turned my back on me after I've been on the site for FOUR YEARS and had the audacity to say my edits aren't great even though I worked fucking hard on on this. So TV Tropes moderators and kiss ass users that are nothing but yes man idiots.

Massacre Weapons are creations of the plane of war, horrific things made from the bones and souls of fallen warriors compounded into steel. They are powerful in their wown right, and many an adventurer has fallen attempting to wrest one from their home plane. For those brave and skilled enough the Massacre Weapon is a powerful tool indeed. 

An old thhing of mine that I just typed up, inspired by the Aether Weapons I just reblogged from @5efoundry. I really like weapons and classes that add tactical thought and skill difficulty to playing classes that are typically considered “easy” such as Fighteers and Barbarians, and I feel like these add a level of fun for people tired of the same old “I run up, I hit it” routine.  Think these are really neat?  One thing I just love about the General US Politics on the Tv Tropes forum is really how partisan and hypocritical it has become over the years. Just right now if you try to refute their mantra of the Democrats being the put upon angels, they will be self-righteously defensive about their position and lack so much self awareness about caring more about how the Republicans are going to exploit the situation while a while go wondering hopefully if it was going to be a right wing shooter.
