Excuse me while I go out find all the different ways to use this liquor of magnificence that has been under my nose since 1980 when I saw Urban Cowboy for the first time. Backing up a little... once a month I have the privilege of spending happy hour with some of the sweetest and most talented foodies enjoying some of the best food and cocktails that Austin has to offer. I usually love everything but this time I was blown away by a new discovery. Do. Not. Laugh. But I’d never had Mezcal. 😳. I LOVE Smokey flavors and had no idea about Mezcal y’all! But the fantastic people at the Revelry @rkbatx provided me with my new obsession when we were there to sample the menu they will be serving at their sister bar #Revelryontheblvd opening this fall! I will be there every day if i can have this drink! Mezcal is a word formed from the Aztec word “mexcali” which means over cooked agave. Thank all the crazy Aztec gods that their ovens smoked and gave mezcal that amazing smoked flavor! The mixologists at The Revelry aptly named this sultry girl “Come Hither”. Made simply with @banhezmezcalartesanal, lime juice and ginger honey syrup she beckons you with her sweet smoky taste. She is a much more appealing call for mezcal than (Insert record scratching sound here) Wes sucking down the worm from his bottle mezcal in the hopes that he would see visions in the movie Urban Cowboy. The weather in Austin has been more #fickle than I am lately! We legit had one NIGHT of winter and then it was summer in less than 12 hours?? What the what??? No matter how hot or cold it is, one thing you can always enjoy is Moroccan mint tea with a good friend in a beautifully designed and breathtakingly appointed restaurant. Grab a friend and go visit Morocco ...ancient Morocco even....right here in Austin @darnatx! I’m not entirely convinced that you could find a more beautifully opulent setting even in Morocco.... . . . . . I have been amazed lately at the immersive experiences I’ve had lately. I have learned that I adore other cultures and learning about them. Restaurant owners who do not limit themselves to culinary fortitude but seek to literally immerse you into a culture that they are passionate about. @hotelvalenciarw brings anyone who enters it into a Spanish hacienda. I thought that couldn’t be topped until I attended a preview @tilliescamplucy where you enter into a thousands years old building that was disassembled there and then reassembled here in the Hill Country without one nail! Each roof tile on one building was made by a different person. @yuyoaustin brings you into Peruvian “hogar dulce”. So now I’ve learned that immersive experiences are the ones I love most. The delightful owner of Darna moved to the U.S from Morocco and seeks to help other immigrants she comes into contact with acclimate and make use of all of the things afforded them so that they can be self sufficient. She’s has a precious mother hen personality. So honestly it’s like going home to go there and spend time with her. The details are breathtaking and you don’t want to miss one. Almost everyone is handmade and everything but the diner chairs were made in Morocco. The camel skin lamps and ornate artwork on the sconces along with the detailed doors and walls take you away to the Mediterranean. I’m feeling the need to return and I haven’t even started to tell you about the food! It’s FRYNALLY FRIDAY! So give me ALL the fried things!! Fried chicken, fried fries, fried rice (kimchi and bacon fried rice mmmm). What are some of your fave fried foods? I don’t know about you but I’ve been going going going all week and weekends don’t happen for me until Monday! Here’s the truth. It’s so fun doing all of these events and meeting people and promoting their dreams and unique offerings to the world but I get exhausted! So sometimes I like to take a little rest and the other day I decided to rest belly up to the diner style bar at I Bonchon in Round Rock. One thing I love about Austin is how she calls people here and it’s usually the kind of people that want to share their corner of the world with us. At Bonchon I got to experience Korean comfort food as I spent a couple hours talking to the staff and the owner while inhaling my food (after the camera ate of course). I truly experienced Korean comfort food, but in “my hometown” which is what “Bonchon” means. The thrice fried chicken is so crunchy that I didn’t need all of the breading I usually love and the kimchi and bacon fried rice had me and my family swooning. I’ve seen yelp reviews that were a bit condescending and negative but the place was packed for lunch. And I didn’t see one frowny face! If you want fancy gourmet fusion you may not want to go here, this place is all about handcrafted comfort food that will warm your heart and your belly! The staff was excellent and welcoming and the food was what it’s advertised to be. Both of these lovely ladies are entrepreneurs with extensive business experience in IT, engineering and community and event planning, so their strengths and business sense naturally transfer into their new business which provides a quaint setting for events. Reds and Whites serves as a social and networking venue for mid to large corporations, non-profits, associations and family gatherings and will accommodate your whims with a highly customized experience. You can plan these pending availability. . Reds and Whites is currently the only wine tasting room in Austin focused on Texas wines exclusively and the only downtown Austin wine tasting room. Their flights and tastings take us on a virtual tour of hill country wines through their carefully curated collection. They offer wine to go (even a curbside service if you have a card on file) daily with 100 different Texas wines and four Texas craft beers available. The wines they offer are available for you having to travel to taste and purchase. You skip shipping costs and gain savings and availability without memberships through this unique tasting room. Special winery led wine tastings are available to the public twice a month from 2 PM – 4 PM. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 12 PM to 9 PM.
