Wait is ratfic not fiction about rats???

I can talk about fiction about rats too! Let's talk about some British childrens' book series! And one American comic book.

The four relevant works for our discussion would be the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, the Welkin Weasels series by Garry Kilworth, the Deptford Mice series by Robin Jarvis, and the Mouse Guard series by David Petersen. All these works portray a world inhabited by semi-anthropomorphic animals that are at the scale of real world animals. And indeed all of them include rats, albeit mostly as antagonists.

Redwall is perhaps the one that has most penetrated internet pop culture, thanks to articles like this one on SomethingAwful which mocked some of the series's recurring elements while painting Brian Jacques as a bit of a nazi. I ate those books up as a kid, but in retrospect I truthfully can remember only snatches: the shrews' battle cry of 'logalogalogalog!', the pages of elaborate descriptions of feasts.

Redwall is a big sufferer from the 'evil races' problem. A certain arbitrary set of species (e.g. rats, stoats, weasels, ferrets) are ontologically evil, and various other species are standins for various stereotypical British social classes (e.g. iirc moles are always working class). As unfortunately tends to be the case, it even makes the strange decision to double down on this - I believe in one of the books, a member of one of the evil species is raised in the Abbey, but inevitably his evil nature comes out when the good rodents and mustelids are once again threatened by an army of bad rodents and mustelids.

Nevertheless, as repetitive and ethically dubious as these books are, they do conjour a very specific flavour which makes them memorable. The author's enthusiasm for food as child of the Blitz shines through, as does his evident love for the idyllic Redwall Abbey. There's a lot of really charming elements like the 'logalogalog' thing. Having these read out to me as kid was great, it had a bit of a panto feel, where I could join in with the expected beats.

The first Redwall book implies that humans exist in this world, but this is subsequently quietly retconned to an only-animals fantasy world.

The Welkin Weasels series is a lot shorter at six books, and you may well bounce off the author's enthusiasm to insert puns and references all over the place (I recall one book managing to set up "badgers? we don't need no stinkin' badgers"), but from what I remember of them they benefit from having more explicit horror elements which makes the stakes much more engaging. I recall the weasels trying to weasel their way into a crypt full of horrible pitfalls and finding it very tense as a kid.

There is once again a sympathetic-unsympathetic species divide - weasels are our plucky heroes, while stoats tend to be aristocratic and cruel. However, it does play out a little differently: the first three books are in a medieval fantasy setting with explicit magic, but over the course of the novels, the mustelids manage to rediscover humans, leading to a timeskip forward into a more steampunk setting where the animals and humans have built a joint society together.

Honestly, I would quite like to reread these books! They may well not hold up today, but it would be fun to revisit them.

The Deptford Mice series by Robin Jarvis - author of Deathscent, a highly memorable novel in which Elizabethans have been transported by aliens into a space archipelago where all the animals are robots which run on the four humours - is a pretty fun one, although my memory is very foggy. It's set in our world, in London, and as I recall the first book involves an evil cat wizard attempting to resurrect the Bubonic Plague from the plague pits. I recall a scene in which rats dig up the plague pit and have their paws melted by the lime coating it. Beyond that I can recall very little but I definitely think it merits inclusion in this list of rat fic.

Once again we have the good rodent/evil rodent problem. Mice and rats are almost identical creatures, so it's weird that the sympathetic/unsympathetic divide falls so consistently.

Mouse Guard is an American comic series about mice with little cloaks and swords. Making it be a comic is kind of a great idea because you get to see how cute they are at every turn. The mouse guard are responsible for defending the other mice from threats such as snakes. They have a pretty high mortality rate.

I'm... actually not super familiar with the comics, but they inspired a roleplaying game by the creators of Burning Wheel, using similar mechanics - e.g. its beliefs system, the simultaneous-resolution combat system. That got a lot of buzz around the late 2010s. So if you want a game to play as an rat at the tabletop, it's probably a good one to check out!

We might also at this juncture mention the wildly popular novel Watership Down, which imagines an elaborate rabbit society complete with a substantially fleshed out rabbit religion. I wrote about the animated film for Animation Night a couple years back - it's quite a memorable one.

Sadly, this is mostly mousefic (with a bit of weaselfic). I don't know of any true ratfic - centred on rats as protagonists. Perhaps this is an opportunity for someone out there to write ratfic ratfic to correct this imbalance.

Berlin, episode 1 - a spoiler-filled live reaction/commentary 

Spoilers ahoy under the cut!

Our man wears a turtleneck from the get-go, which I find hilarious.

"This is my team - one of the three I've robbed with in my life - but this one is special to me as it's from my golden age". Maybe season 2 - if it exists - will focus on that other team? Or? The other 2 teams are The Cormorants and the Mint gangs? What do you guys think?

Also this is set before Berlin knew of his Helmers Myopathy (lol I took Liberties in my latest fic, I won't let something like canon change that)

Roi sees him as the father he never had, while Berlin sees Roi as "a loyal dog he walks every day" -- right, I'm totally going to write these two, and not just because Roi calls him "sir" and shines his shoes.

Damien is a Professor but for real.

During the first heist we see of the gang, a random guest clocks the team as "not police " in about a minute, seemingly based on Keyla's glasses/fidgeting -- okay I guess?? Make that conflict, Pina & Co!

Also iirc Berlin pulls out a bag to put the stolen artifact out of his ass thin air. 

Losing my mind at the smashed phone bit though, the panto is chef's kiss. (points pinky)

Berlin has TERRIBLE gun etiquette/safety OMG???

Pedro Alonso learned French for this okay? And he did a fine job ngl, much better than his Danish of S5.

Keyla is (at least partially) a plot device/Deus Ex literal Machina with her generating 650 pages of content about their made-up archeological gang ---- hopefully priest dude doesn't know how to double check stuff like awards because then Keyla would have to ~hack loads of sites/databases okay I'll stop but seriously 

He calls himself Berlin already. How or why? Unclear yet. 

Based on the iPod shuffle that Keyla's wearing the series takes place after 2010-2012 (so before he met Martin according to the little timeline I made a while ago)

Not a huge fan of Cameron just yet, she gives me Tokio vibes and not in a good way. She IS hot though. 

Come on Cameron, when a guy says not to touch his ass you don't take it personally?? Girl, that's not cute irl. If you wanna help him open that lock, warn him. Touching people without their consent is No Bueno. I get that she's supposed to be mentally ill but bit a creep?

Berlin is possibly an insomniac. He's not changed from the Berlin I know and love in that he feels that: 1) he's in any position to give advice, let alone about love 2) he knows all about love his experiences are universal

Does anyone else randomly ship Izzy from ofmd with The Captain from bbc ghosts? Because it just hit me like newton's apple and I need to be reasoned with.

Like, Izzy has a captain fetish and he's literally THE Captain.

TC has that army beef with the navy, which would be hilarious to explore. Also, he just seems like as a kid he would have loved pirate stories.

They both have a history of pining and of being the Dad of the group - in very different ways.

Both define themselves by their jobs and have a strong code of honour - even if in Izzy's case it's extremely subjective.

Listen.

If you've read my fics, you know that I love history. I love pageantry. I love symbolism. I love beautiful clothes, and art, and jewels. I love going behind the scenes and seeing into castles and manor houses. I love parades, and the hidden meaning behind coronations, and the fairytale unreality of the lives of the gentry.

I believe, however, that all of these things should be ARTIFACTS.

I believe there is literally no point in upholding a monarchy or commonwealth any more.

Allow commonwealth countries become republics. Allow Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales to return to being seperate nations if they vote to become so. Allow those republics to create their own network of mutual support, should they so choose to. There's no reason to not keep up Commonwealth ties and festivals even if there's no Commonwealth.

Repatriate artifacts, art and jewels to their nations of origin. Offer monetary compensation/support for cultures violated and impoverished by colonialism. Help establish democracies where needed, and butt the hell out where they're not. (And especially don't establish puppet democracies, ew.)

Let the British royal family become symbolic tourist attractions, let them fund their own charities, and throw their parties, and knight their artists, and uphold their royal orders of garters and baths, and maintain their personal properties--and make them do it with their own wealth and real estate investments. They're multi-billionaires. They can afford it. They'll be fine.

But remove them from the machine of governance. Detach them entirely from public spending, dependance, or influence.

And if they do participate in traditions of parliament (like the Opening, which is actually really cool and fascinating panto, which I quite like and hope they WOULD continue), man, do it without the silly hat. If the King wants to wear the silly hat, make him pay for the upkeep of the silly hat out of his own pocket. It's HIS silly hat, after all. It's not like we all get a turn with it, even though we do pay for it.

(Actually, the Crown Jewels are owned by the British Public so like... if they want to take them along when they go, make the royal family buy them. And then let them charge museums a fee to loan them for exhibition, just like privately owned paintings by famous Masters are loaned to art galleries.)

Let the royals continue to do all the things the royals do, if they want to do them. Just… make them pay for it themselves. Dissolve the Sovereign Grant, and use all that money to pay for things like restitution, repatriation, and hey maybe increasing public spending on health care and social infrastructure.

Turn the public-owned properties into, yeah, tourist attractions in part (gotta fund their upkeep somehow). But also put public offices in there. Maybe some social housing. Maybe hospitals, with well-paid front-line staff. Event spaces. Seniors care homes. Something.

If Hampton Court Palace can do it, so can Buckingham.

Balmoral and Sandringham are privately owned, there's lots of land and buildings for the family to occupy. They won't be homeless.

Keep the royal family, if the royal family wants to be kept. Include the royal family if the royal family wants to be included. Just make them pay for their own stuff with their own money. And do BETTER things with the savings.

Yes, I'm aware that this may be wishful thinking.

Yes, I'm aware that unscrupilous people may take advantage of monetary support given to commonwealth nations and keep it for themselves. (And I'm not unaware that it would happen in ALL the nations, yes, even Canada where I live. There are a LOT of currently-serving politicians who are vile, scummy, self-serving arseholes.) Yes, I'm aware that mutual support between nations of the commonwealth is all that is preventing famine or religious war in some places.

Yes, I'm aware none of this is as easy as I'm making it sound.

But I think it's time to stop celebrating and upholding centuries of brutal militaristic colonialism and the destruction and subversion of so many beautiful cultures for the sake of some tourist bucks. I especially think it's time for the public to stop PAYING for it.

I love history. I love symbolism. I love the stories of royalty and treachery and gallantry and seduction. I love the architecture of great houses, and the meaning behind golden spoons from over a thousand years ago, and the fascination of birthrights and bloodlines. I love paintings, and balls, and the gorgeous work of exceptionally talented artisans that go into making all the amazing silly hats.

I write historical romances for goshsakes.

And I also think it's time to stick it all where it belongs -- in a museum.

But the story is really soppy and fluffy I swear.

Panto

Stede Fucking Bonnet. If there’s one thing he has to credit the man with, Izzy thinks, it’s that he has a natural knack for beauty the likes of which is not often seen on these seven seas. He looks around at the strings and strings of lanterns which light up the deck like stars and feels … something. Something warm and healing and dangerous and terrifying. It’s in Jim’s smile as Frenchie and Oluwande help adjust one of Bonnet’s jackets for their more slender frame. Archie is arm wrestling with Black Pete and she has a nautical star on her wrist he’s never noticed before. Even their Captain is here, helping Wee John pin some accessories to a dress more bold and glittering and blue than all the treasure in the world and Izzy feels- Izzy… feels…

“Like what you see?”

He jumps near out of his skin, hand flying to the hilt of his sword out of sheer instinct. But it’s just Lucius. He sneers as threateningly as he can muster, but he’s already lost this one. He just can’t get under the kid’s skin these days. And the little fucker knows it. Lucius smiles, sidling up to adjust his already, always, perfect tie.

“Looks like I gave you a bit of a fright. Getting soft, old man?”

“Don’t you dare.”

“Woah, alright then.” He raises a cocky little eyebrow. “Getting hard. Have it your way.”

Izzy grits his teeth. “Twat.”

“Takes one to know one.”

He makes a sound, and that sound is pretty pathetic. He’d really done a number on himself with that bullet. He’d been much better at pushing it all down before. He’d have probably called them all something awful and stormed off to make himself useful, or sulk, or both. But for some reason, he’s still here, and he’s still here, and Lucius is still here looking irritatingly fine about everything. He has a little black stick of make-up between his fingers like a cigarette and something, some godforsaken thing compels Izzy to ask,

“What’s that?”

“Eyeliner.”

“I know it’s fucking eyeliner, I mean what’s-”

Lucius takes a chance, diving for Izzy’s face with the liner and doodling a quick little line and a curl and then he darts back to arms length with a grimace. Izzy’s hand was really far too close to his blade for that and his newly redrawn boundaries were maybe a bit too new for that and Lucius looked like he might finally be worried enough to be scared. When Izzy still hasn’t run him through or run off after a few seconds, he raises up a little cosmetic mirror like it’s part shield, part offering.

“It’s just- you know-” he stammers, “It’s just for fun.”

Izzy examines his reflection. He already has a moustache, but Lucius has taken it upon himself to draw him another one. A bigger one? A pantomime of one over his face. Christ, panto, that takes him back. He’d been a different person back then. A more fun one, for sure. A happier one, a safer one. He looks at himself in the mirror and raises an eyebrow, and imagines? - remembers? - both? - what it would look like to have another one drawn over the top so that someone could see it from up in the nosebleeds. He really fucking misses being seen.

“Shit, I’m sorry,” Lucius blusters. “I’ll clean it off. It’s stupid.”

“I’m not saying I didn’t like it.”

Lucius stares.

Izzy stares back.

“Wait, really?”

Izzy swallows hard. He swallows down a lot of things. He pries his hand off the hilt of his sword and lifts both hands away from his body. An invitation. And if his hands shake while he does it, well, they all know better than to fucking say a thing about it.

Lucius moves more slowly this time. A little wary, a little gentle, like he knows what he’s being offered. Izzy focuses on not letting his stupid heart pound so hard it makes him dizzy as he feels the pencil drag down his cheeks and lips and forehead. A long stretch of fragile silence passes between them. He’s not sure exactly when he closed his eyes. Jesus. He almost doesn’t dare open them again.

“How do I look?” he asks at last.

“I think you look fabulous, darling.”

🍓- How did you get into writing fanfiction?

I've written fanfiction since my teens, but considering that was back in the dark days before ff.net and AO3, I just wrote them for myself in notebooks and on my computer. It was only when I wrote Scorched Earth back in 2018 that I thought 'I wonder if anybody else would enjoy this' and took the plunge of posting it on AO3. The fanfic bug bit soon after, and it only got worse once I got onto Tumblr.

I only have one playlist. It's my own personal one called 'inspiration' and it's full of songs that that inspire ideas or that represent a certain fic/au. I'm not going to link it but here are five random songs from it if anybody really wants to know.

I'd probably just get Erase and Dani over - they won't hold it against me, I'm sure. We'd just stare at the body then discuss what happened on the latest episode of Raw and the finer details of CodyPunk. Nothing would actually get done about the body but I'd feel a lot less stressed about it...

🍄- share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings?

Well of course, it's a Punkintyre one. I reckon that Drew is very vanilla kink-wise and Punk is trying to broaden his horizons with their feud - a 'hey, you wanna date the freak, you have to get a little freaky' kinda thing. So Punk suggested the threesome with Seth Rollins - hard pass from Drew! Drew suggests whipping (he's done it before) - they're making some good progress. Bit of role-play, bit of blood-play and now we'll see what they try out at Bad Blood. I'm keeping everything crossed for some bondage; since Punk's return to wrestling there has been a distinct lack of handcuffs and I am not pleased by this!

🪐- name three good things going on in your life right now?

Awww, this is a cute one! I'm happy with how my family life is at the moment, I'm being more pro-active and trying to keep organised and it's really helped my mental health as I don't have as much mental load as before and I've landed a main role in the local Panto this year. I'm playing the sea witch in the 'Little Mermaid' and I get to sing and dance and really heel it up. There's so many similarities between pro-wrestling and pantomime that they must share a common origin somewhere, I could write an essay on it!

desperately need a wwi au. i really like aus that can replicate the dynamics of you know, developing a relationship during active combat. robert 'there is a lot of sex feeling in boxing' graves and dick would have something. they would find each other completely insufferable but there would be something. dobie would end up in there somewhere. i have no idea who could write this. pat barker?

oh no i'm not sure i hate any of the characters! if we're talking about characters you're meant to hate for the plot, then for sobel:

foil for so many of the best winnix scenes (the can of peaches, just hanging out watching basketball in aldbourne when the court-martial letter arrives, the salute)

so well played by david schwimmer as it could easily have gone very panto villain

also the inspection scene in currahee is such a good introduction to so many of the characters and i think really shows you why easy were bonded so tightly

Warlock and Adam (or Warlock/Adam) - Hallmark holiday movie AU

First of all bear in mind that I have never seen a Hallmark holiday movie so my grasp of this concept is at best theoretical. Warlock, grown-up and in some kind of City of London soul-sucking corporate job, hates Christmas. He hates the overwhelming commercialisation of the season, the anxiety-inducing tradition of gift-giving, the fact that everything in London shuts down and you can't get a meal anywhere except in Chinatown for obscene rip-off prices. He's become such a Grinch about it that his girlfriend (let's call her Charlie) breaks up with him right before Christmas, which means he'll have to attend his parents’ terrible Christmas lunch single. Due to coincidence (or angelic intervention) he meets, in a Soho bookstore, Adam, who hates Christmas because he's literally the Antichrist. Adam agrees to pretend to be Charlie at Warlock’s parents' lunch ("did I say Charlie was a woman, dad? or did you just assume") if Warlock will be his fake date at the Young family dinner in Lower Tadfield. ("Okay, but how are we going to get to Lower Tadfield before dinner if none of the trains are running?" Adam just shrugs.) All hell proceeds to break loose. (Maybe even literally). Also the whole time it's snowing perfectly wherever Adam is, while in the rest of the UK it’s just pelting rain, super dreich, the absolute worst. Bonus subplot in which Aziraphale has a starring role in the Christmas panto and Crowley is thus forced to be in attendance (it's abysmal. The stage catches fire. Crowley swears it wasn't him. The Bentley plays 'Thank God It's Christmas' all the way back to theirs and Crowley accuses it of siding with the angel.) I do not think anyone should ever let me write a holiday movie.

@ fic writers who still pull full command-comment asides mid-chapter like it's 2004 to call out your characters for being uncooperative or pass out popcorn before a plot point you're particularly proud of or otherwise meta-narrate... I need y'all the stop apologizing. Fanfic is *exactly* the correct place to be putting the panto back into Literature(TM) (fanfic about comics three times as much). You're the bravest of our warriors and the leaders who will save us all. Keep your chin up; what is cringe can never die.
