David Bowie: "Wishful Beginnings". I'm currently working on a Mirdania/Annatar fic and making a playlist for it, and this song is number one for... what I hope are obvious reasons. And then since I'm already in my youtube playlists, let's grab four more random songs!

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: "Weeping Song". This is from a playlist called "it's some songs", which is a collection of songs I like in no particular order, according to no other criteria. Basically if I find a cool song and it doesn't fit in any other playlist, it goes here. Also I need to keep track of this song in particular because sometimes people ask me, "Hey what are your cosplay plans for next dragoncon" and I have to say, "Okay so there's this music video in which Nick Cave is dressed as a priest in a rowboat in the middle of an expanse of water made out of what appears to be black garbage bags, drinking wine from a mug..."

From my Adar playlist (angry version): KMFDM: "Anarchy". Once again I hope the reasons are obvious as to why this song is on this playlist.

Irving Berlin: "Alexander's Ragtime Band", from the playlist "The Emperor", which is mostly classical and baroque, but I made an exception for this newfangled 1911 number.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

Uhm... there were so many when I was younger, but I forgot most of them 🙈 I once had this story idea on my mind (I challenged myself) to write a rare pair Numb3rs songfiction to the next best song that came on (the ship was David/Larry and the song "This is Gospel" by Panic At The Disco). I started a few lines once, but I'll never write it completely.

11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?

Not really. At least not for every fic. When I wrote "Panuki Geato" I listened to various Breaking Benjamin songs. And when I write Khotty-stories I have a playlist too.

21. Have you ever deleted an entire scene after spending hours laboring over it? If so, why?

Not hours laboring, but yeah I did delete scenes. Mainly since they didn't seem to fit with the rest of the story/chapter.

23. How do you choose where to end a chapter (if you have multi-chapter works)?

The best cliffhanger possible 😈🤣

Music: Sometimes? More often than not I'll have something on, it just depends what I'm writing and why I'm writing as to what it is. I have certain playlists for when I need background noise/no vocals, some that are essentially fic soundtracks, and others that are for certain characters.

Lately I've been trying to force any of the au-gust prompts into being written, and it's led me back to a combination of David Bowie (shocking to no one, long time followers are staring unimpressed going 'yes, yes, the move back to Bowie as fic soundtrack, we've done this before' lmao), Avatar, and Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats. Brief track recs that I've had on repeat lately for each:

Bowie-Son's of the Silent Age (any version, but the 2017 remaster is v good), Cactus, Bring Me the Disco King, Hallo Spaceboy, The Hearts Filthy Lesson, 5:15 The Angels Have Gone, and the one that keeps making me feel homesick (even tho the idea of having to go back to ND for any reason rn makes me physically sick, which is confusing af lol) Everyone Says 'Hi'.

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats-this one is album specific, so you're looking at their latest live release 'Slaughter on First Avenue' and tracks: Waiting for Blood, Shockwave City, 13 Candles, Pusher Man, Ritual Knife, I'll Cut You Down, and No Return.

Most Popular Fic: I had to look this one up fkasdjlfjasfd. I don't know for sure which is most popular of the ones on Tumblr, since some of those fics haven't been ported over to my ao3 yet and my varying writing tags have been lost to time (I'll have been on here for 12 years as of this year lol)

David’s Disco | AO3 | Song #1

September

September tenth, his birthday. David Parsons loved celebrating his birthday. When in his older teenage years, he celebrated his birthday twice: once with his mother and another time with his school’s soccer team. With his mother, he refrained from wild celebrations to connect with her on a personal basis; as the only child of a single parent, he came to appreciate the closeness of a relationship and learned not to give it up for granted. But with his mates on the soccer team, all closeness faded the moment his sensory needs were met with the blasting music, the wild car-rides, and the smuggled alcoholic beverages. David was the kind of boy who could flip flop from his tender side to his raving crazy side and back at will.

But in college, David participated less in the pure energy of the atmosphere, as not only was he an athlete stretched past his limits during practice and games, but his Chemistry homework took whatever energy that was left and squashed it until he had no choice but to succumb to exhaustion around ten o’clock and fall into bed.

On this particular night, September tenth to be precise, David held a textbook open in his hands and sat cross legged on his bed. His eyes scanned over the same paragraph time and time again, hoping to understand a little better with each reread. However, the longer he reread, the more frustrated he grew with the swimming words in his mind’s eye, completely unattached to meaning. His struggle to attach words to some meaning he did not have worsened his mood which worsened his ability to see the words on the page which worsened his ability to comprehend anything he still was able to see. He shut the book with a snap and hurled it to the ground. Its spine hit the tiles and its covers bounced open and the pages fanned out like a peacock’s tail.

“Fucking chemistry,” David growled under his breath. He glared at the textbook, hoping that by some twist of fate he would suddenly develop the powers of laser vision to incinerate the paper. Unfortunately for his mental health, no such powers manifested. Begrudgingly, David slipped off the bed onto his woollen socks to retrieve the textbook. He had homework to muster through, and even if it killed him (which he was certain it would), he wasn’t going to slack off and go with the flow like he did in high school. The days of settling for B pluses were behind him; if he could put in the extra time to sharpen his soccer skills, he could afford to put in the same amount of dedication into his academics.

“All or nothing,” he muttered to himself as he bent over to scoop the textbook off the ground.

His fingertips made contact with the book, and the door burst open. He scrambled to look up yet in his alarm ended up tripping over his own feet and landing on the floor. His elbow like a gong rang upon crashing into the floor.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” a chorus of voices screamed. In charged a brigade of people, at least three college-aged boys, one of which made no hesitation to run behind David, grab his arms, and jerk him up to his feet. After a moment to find his balance, David gaped at the two in front of him and then circled around to gape at the one behind.

“Jesus Christ, Bradley,” he said to the one at his six. “Tone it down, man!”

Bradley’s face contorted into a devilish smirk. “What a lame kind of surprise party would that be?” he argued back.

“This,” David said, circling his hand in the room to point out the entire situation, “is not surprise party. This is an ambush, is what it is. You ambushed me.”

“Oh, come on.” Bradley punched David in the shoulder. “Stop using fancy words like ‘ambush’ and whatever and start enjoying.”

David frowned – since when had ‘ambush’ been considered a fancy word? – and mustered in a breath. He glanced back at the other two in front of the dorm door, which still stood open. They were also his teammates from the varsity soccer team, Wally and Diego. David released his brow from the frown he had condemned it to form. He straightened up a little.

“What am I supposed to be enjoying? What party?” he challenged.

“He’s such a killjoy,” remarked Bradley to the boys by the doorway. To David, he said, “the one we’re throwing for you right now. My brother’s apartment.”

“Hmm, yeah, you’re throwing it right exactly now?” countered David.

Bradley plunged on with his description of the party; “Don’t worry, I got the official say so, I know you’re a stickler for courtesy or whatever, and he even left a ton of booze for us before he went away for the weekend with his girlfriend.” His smile was lopsided and if David didn’t know his friend any better, he might be inclined to think him already drunk. “It’ll so beat fucking last year.”

Between celebrating David’s favourite day of the year and the opposing option with complex chemical formulas and depressing drab white walls boxing him in, the decision was obvious. One option, David should take. The other option, he wanted to take. But this was the prime of his life, why waste it on black on white text and the mature decision of going to bed at ten-thirty no exceptions? Why couldn’t he go a little crazy with his friends, form memories to last a lifetime? This was his chance to live without fear of the repercussions.

“What the hell,” David decided, grinning from ear to ear. “I have a whole semester ahead to worry about chemistry.”

“That’s the spirit,” said Bradley, punching David in the arm again.

“If you punch me in the arm again,” David threatened.

“You’d what?”

“I’ll beat the shit out of you, that’s what.”

“Wanna bet?”

A smirk traversed David’s face. He shrugged. “Nah. You couldn’t catch me anyway.” Twisting on the spot, he kicked into a sprint, shot out the door, and pelted down the hallway. Judging by the footsteps behind him, Bradley was hot on his heels.

This year was probably my most successful in terms of content; I’m proud of so many fics! I have it narrowed down to two, can’t narrow any further: Forgive My Thoughts, Now and Misery Without Her. Both of them are fics for Psych (2006) and both deal with heavy themes of death. I’m soooo not a downer at parties! ;)

2. least favourite fic you wrote this year

I wrote a fic centring about Shawn Spencer being bi, buuuut i could have written it SO much better, especially since it felt a ooc in the beginning.

Written for “A Garden to Tend” – IM3 fix-it for that scene, you know the one:

At Two In The Afternoon, a post-Endgame fic where Peter is struggling through a panic attack at school and Tony breaks out the ol’ suit to help his spider-son back to comfort.

7. longest completed fic you wrote this year

In Every Life, an MCU fic that’s vaguely canon-divergent but the point at which canon diverges is left ambiguous because... who knows? I wrote this for a forum competition spanning the month of January, and the fic itself is great! I like to think! ...except the ending. I just had NO clue how to end it, so I just wrote the first thing that came to my mind and ughhhhhhhh I ruined everything.

11. fandom you enjoyed writing for the most this year

Psych and Iron Man were my top fandoms this year. Psych beat out the MCU for most enjoyable A) because I’m still mad about the recent course of the latter fandom, and B) I have this fantastic community supporting anything Psych-related I do. Give it up for the Psych discord, woot woot!

According to Spotify, it’s specifically the song “Coffee” by beabadoobee.

Misery Without Her, yet another Psych fic. I touched upon it above. It’s about Shawn Spencer coping after the sudden, tragic death of his wife and how he manages the duties of a single father. I’m most excited about furthering this one. Huh... is that bad? XD

I just conceptualised my “Juliet is Superwoman and Shawn is the photographer that’s in love with both sides of her” fic, so I hope I can post that starting January next year. I’d probably be doing a bi-monthly update schedule for all my fics.

1. Father and Son - Cat Stevens: this song ended up being the main song i would listen to when i would get in the vibe of writing- to the point where i would reread the first chapter with it on to make sure that i was in the vibe lol. While not all the lyrics match, this song really nails the feeling of being a scared parent trying their best. Theres a lot of love in it, and i adore it. 

2. Brandy - Looking Glass: this playlist follows the story fairly loosely, so I wanted this to be Renee’s song. She’s fun and upbeat, and i thought that it really nails down what we THOUGHT Renee was at this point- just a pretty girl that falls in love with a rolling stone. 

3. Just When I Needed You Most - Randy VanWarmer: Renee dies u_u and I was trying to show that spy was very lost right after. 

4. I’m Not In Love - 10cc: whoops how many of these are on the guardians of the galaxy soundtracks rip  At this point we’ve hit the main story, and we have spy very curious of mundy and his intentions. I also dont think spy has really fallen for anyone since Renee, and I think he had himself convinced that he didnt want to find anyone else. this is that lol

5. Moonlight Serenade - Glenn Miller: now this is THE song of this fic lol. I used to play in a jazz band myself, and this song always was so dreamy. It’s slow and romantic with this strange note of longing. I love the old recording quality of it, u feel nostalgic for something u dont know. there were lyrics made later by other artists for singing, but they are just a tad too cheesy for my taste

6. La Vie En Rose - Edith Piaf: I used to listen to the orchestrated version of this song from Bioshock Infinite that u can find here. I enjoy both versions immensely, but the og one is what was on spotify so here we are lol. OH and spy is french, so yeah 

7. Something Stupid - Studio Sound group: The version I am most used to is Sinatra’s version that can be found here. This was the closest version i could find- but i adore this song as well, especially considering its a great consensual pining song. We also have sniper saying stupid lolll, all things considered it was fairly soon after they had met, and I think that was a scary thing for them. 

8. Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow - Freddie Mercury: I fucking cry like 1 out of every 3 times of hearing this song i stg. If theres anyone that can do raw emotion its Freddie. I was looking for a song that conveyed the storming of the agency (and was upbeat for some other songs on the list) without being an action-y song. I debated putting this song in the playlist at all, hoping that it wouldnt be disrespectful to the source material and the origin of its creation. It’s an incredibly powerful experience for the ears.

9. In Our Bedroom After The War - Stars: once upon of time i was pretty sure on having one of the mercs die (NOT demo as a twist lol) This was something i later didnt like, but i still enjoyed this songs acknowledgement of others sacrifices (in this case, mostly Renee’s in terms of death) and the process of grief into victory. A bittersweet victory and looking forward to the future. 

10. Death Of A Bachelor - David Fowler: Panic! at the Disco did this song amazingly well, but it had a lot of electric beats and the whatnot that I think didn’t fit any of the other songs on the playlist, so I chose a nice cover. This is for spy, spy deserves a “im cool” song. It’s also a good transition into some more modern songs and upbeat I have near the end. 

11. My Type - Saint Motel: This was the last song added, but i LOVED how it tied in. The sax at the beginning, the use of “love comes wearing disguises”- it was just a fun song to add of them finally being open. I added 2 Saint Motel songs and I ended up placing them next to each other. Of the two, this one is more like Spy lmao. 

12. Cold Cold Man - Saint Motel: I loved this song for sniper, but i wasn’t dead set on adding it in until I had other more modern songs to back it up. I think (especially in this AU) he’s very reserved simply because he isn’t used to company but a side effect of this is also really attaching onto people he does care about. 

13. Moonlight Serenade - Lucky Chops: when looking for other recordings of this song to listen to I came across this and just KNEW it was like the “credits” song. I was blown away at how lovely the arrangement is. Here we have the dreamy tune played with a “hey everything turned out ok after all” vibe. All of Lucky Chops stuff is great btw please give them love 

14. My Way - Frank Sinatra: Hey when did I start this fic? May 2017? And when did the Kingsman 2 trailer come out??? April 2017?? What a WEIRD coincidence. This totally did not effect how I treated this AU. Not at all. I definitely didn’t name the fic after this song but in a weird way that no one got dkjvnsdvkjvnds  But honestly, Ive loved this song for years and it’s an amazing note to end on.

I tried to come up with a song that matched each chapter of Bad Apple. Sometimes I got the perfect song. Sometimes I picked the song because of its music video (two chapters were actually inspired by music videos). Sometimes I picked a song because it’s kind of funny in combination with the chapter. And sometimes... well, it just happened... (and the music video isn’t related to this fic at all haha)

If you have a better suggestion for one of these, let me know, because I might actually change it!

Fic Writers Week Days 2 and 3

Day 2: The Muses

Day 3: Small but Mighty

For day 3, writers are supposed to talk about some of their more underrated works.  I have two that I’d like to talk about!

The first fic is called “Fallen Stars in Old Jars”, it’s a Haikyuu oneshot that I wrote back in August.  The premise of the fic was inspired by a text post from the tumblr blog crypticdatesuggestions.  The post said: “Date a boy who collects fallen stars in old jars, who ties his hair up with silver thread spun by gentle hands, woven carefully with wishes throughout."  I sat on the post for about a week, then decided to write a short DaiSuga oneshot for it.  The story is kind of historical fantasy, it takes place sometime in the Edo Period, and it features Youkai!Suga and human!Daichi.  Like pretty much everything I write, it’s fluffy as hell.  A lot of research went into this fic, mostly for Tanabata festivals and whether or not the Perseid meteor shower could be seen in Japan.  Overall, I think this fic is super poetic and that a lot of people would like it, so I highly recommend that people give it a shot!

Summary: It had been tradition for as long as any of the villagers could remember.  Each year, during the height of summer, the stars would fall from the sky.  On a clear night, one could stand on a hill and watch as the bright lights streaked across the heavens.  The younger children were excited that they were allowed to stay out late.  Sawamura Daichi was excited because the stars falling meant there was a chance of meeting him.

The second fic I’d like to talk about is my most recent publication, which is “The Earth Speaks to All of Us, and If We Listen, We Can Understand”.  “The Earth Speaks” is my first ever Haikyuu rare pair fic, featuring Kiyoko/Yui as the main ship. This fic is a Haikyuu Castle in the Sky au that was originally my hqbb fic. I posted the first chapter in the beginning of November and the initial response to it has honestly been amazing.  The first chapter features some gorgeous art by the wonderful @starlity and the fic itself is beta’d by @yaoyoroses.  Without those two, this fic couldn’t have been what it became and I am eternally grateful for all of their help and support.  You two are great, and I appreciate all of your hard work!

Summary: Michimiya Yui is heading back to work one evening when she discovers a mysterious girl with a glowing necklace falling from the sky.  The two vow to unravel the mystery of the glowing necklace and its connection to the mytical castle island, Laputa, but in order to do so, they must surpass air pirates, shady government agencies, and obstacles the likes which they have never seen.

Anyway, here are 10 songs that for at least the last 2 weeks I have been playing on repeat

To and Fro by Thomston - This is the most recent one. I just found this song two days ago, thanks to the Discover Weekly playlist from Spotify. The first time this song came I wasn’t really listening because I was working but once it came to the chorus, I stopped working just to listen more carefully. Next thing I know I already saved it to my library, replayed it for a couple of times and looked up for the lyrics

Besame Mucho from Cesaria Evora - It’s an old song and the first time I found it was YEARS ago, as it was one of the soundtracks in The Great Expectations. But lately I have been replaying it because the fic that I am writing atm? The first idea of the fic came because I kept on imagining David and Joe slow-dance along with this song

I Like Me Better by Lauv - This is the song that I associate with... Percy Jackson. Maybe because the song was talking about being in New York and well, Percy is a New Yorker :)

Always by Panic! at the Disco - Again, this is another song that I’ve kept on listening because of the fic that I am currently writing. Somehow this song is something that I find reflects the vibe of the closing scene that I want for that fic.

You and Me Song by The Wannadies - Yes, another old song. Remember that Leonardo Dicaprio once in this Romeo & Juliet movie with Claire Danes? I dislike the movie but I love the whole album of the soundtrack, and this song has always been my favorite. I currently listen to it again because I kind of write a Solangelo fic in my head based on this song.

The Middle by Wet - One of my currently abandoned SIlvilla fic is based on this fic. I haven’t continued the fic yet but I still listen to this song for at least like...3 or 4 times a day

Things I’d Do for You by Astronomyy - Please don’t hate me for keep on coming with the same explanation, but yes, this is also one of the songs that I listen to because of that David/Joe fic that I am writing. There is just something soft about this song and it makes me think about some quiet tender moments they share together (I wrote Chapter 7 of the fic while having this song on repeat)

Valentine covered by Pentatonix - Another song that I am obsessed with because I think that this one goes with my WIP on SIlvilla

Northern Downpour by Panic! at the Disco - A few weeks ago I read a Jasico fic and there was that scene where they danced with this song and I don’t know, since then I kind of listen to this song for a little too much as it’s just reminds me of Nico

Chatoyant by Made in Heights - I love most, if not all, of their songs. Two or three weeks ago I kept on listening to another one of their song, Death, and lately, it’s this song.
