ON TODAY’S EPISODE OF…
HP/Marauders fanfic tropes I love:
- teenage sex god Remus Lupin
Whether the man is completely oblivious to his sex-symbol status or in full control of it, I love every version of Remus “literally everybody’s gay awakening/first crush” Lupin. The hair, the scars, the jewelry, the 80s rock/punk/metal tees, towering over everyone in the great hall and maybe even flirting up a storm with ALL the guys, gals and non-binary pals! You know he just showed up to school fifth year looking like the puberty gods decided to make up for the whole furry-little-problem by blessing the heck outta this hot mess prefect. Good Lord, praise Merlin! 🥵😆
HP/Marauders fanfic tropes I hate:
- the infantilization of Harry when his abuse comes to light
Some adult or friend in his life realizes what’s going on at privet drive and suddenly everyone treats Harry like a fragile toddler, which is somewhat normal, sure. But then I hate when Harry basically BECOMES a fragile toddler. I’m 100% all for crying it out and expressing the ways his abuse/neglect affected him, but if he’s a 13 year old boy, he isn’t going to just let everyone immediately treat him like a precious child who needs to be held and shielded and protected from every little thing. This is the boy who wanted to rage-hunt a supposed mass murderer when he found out he was his godfather. The boy who went crazy the year Dumbledore stopped talking to him and refused to clue him in on the happenings with Voldyshorts. Raging teenage hormones combined with the misplaced-shame a lot of kids with his kind of home-life have is a recipe for some great, albeit frustrating characterization. Plus, Harry is the reigning sass-master SUPREME, so constantly being reduced to 13 going on 3? Nah bro.

sometimes i write something and think "is this too much like is it too fucked up" but then i remember that 1. there is no such thing and 2. i do not need to write for the delicatest bad faith reader it is on them to read tags and notes and c. i do not need a fascist in my head there are too many (>0) out there already and 4. i actually do not have to analyze why i write the stuff i do i am allowed to be creative without examining my brain about it

If you don’t like the direction a fic is going or you don’t like the characterisation of a character someone is writing or the scenarios aren’t for you I need you to know that the normal thing to do is to simply not read it.
It’s not yell at them in the comments.
It’s not sending them nasty anons.
It’s not to put their stuff on blast.
It’s to not read it and move on with your life.
Anything else is very much not normal and I will fist fight you on the street if I catch you doing it.

Even though my posts make a decent amount of notes, I always compare them to others. Like I'll say, "Well this post has 262 notes, but there's this other person that posts fics that gets an average of 800 notes per fic within the first few days, so...." And it's like I know I shouldn't compare. My fics are really not catered to the reader-insert community as a whole and does well for the niche it's in, but.... There are some others in this niche that do better than me. So it's like.... 🤔🤔 even though I know notes are dependent upon multiple factors.

no you know what I'm going to scream about the stuff I talked about in the tags of this post publicly
I'm tired of the well-meaning "don't feel bad if your work only gets 20 notes your genius is what counts and do it for you!" bullshit. I've had a good handful of friends who have straight up DEACTIVATED in recent months because their work was not getting reblogged AT ALL. No, it wasn't from lack of not being well-liked, no it wasn't from lack of trying to make sure it was getting out there to the people they knew would engage with it. It was because no matter how much they were praised privately for their work, when push came to shove, absolutely NOBODY reblogged it and gave it the audience that it was due, and I'm tired of people shoving the "unsung genius" narrative as an excuse for it. Nothing excuses that. And the boop event really proved that.
because I know given the opportunity, indiscriminately pressing a button (sometimes 10 thousand times, as I did) is not beyond this website's capability. y'all loved doing that. and look at what it wrought. nothing but love and affection and happiness. just from a couple of quick clicks of a little paw button. sure. nobody knew who you booped but the other person (which is how likes used to work on this website, btw). there was an element of anonymity to it. but that is kind of the core of this website that no other social media platform still has: the ability to be anonymous. and hyper-curating a blog on here like you might on twitter or instagram to project an image is simply not viable. and hey. you wanna know a secret: literally nobody cares what you post or whether it goes with the "theme" of your blog or not. yeah. I know. CRAZY concept in this day and age. but literally. I myself have reblogged things that have had nothing to do with whatever I am currently fixated by and you know what happened to my follower count? not a damn thing. in fact, I actively try to reblog things specifically BECAUSE it's my friends who made them (even though I'm not always good at KEEPING UP WITH HOW MUCH THEY POST @prismatica-the-strange will NEVER GO UNRECOGNIZED by me).
And you know what fucking sucks? I have to deal with this too. surprise right? you ever wonder why I reblog fics or art I post like 20 times the day that I post them? do you ever wonder why I ask about tag lists and beg for asks all the time? IT'S BECAUSE EVEN I GET LIKE. 5 LIKES ON THE THINGS I POST. AND THE REST OF THE REBLOGS ARE MINE SO I CAN MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SEE WHAT I MAKE GET TO SEE IT. and I say that knowing that I'm certainly not an unpopular blog, or an unpopular writer. I know that people love the stories that I create. Hell, half of the people that I've talked to about lady terror have told me that they consider her to be canon (AND EVEN SOME!! THOUGHT SHE WAS!!! WITHOUT EVEN HAVING WATCHED THE SHOW! WHICH IS STILL SO SO WILD TO ME!!!) But especially in the last 4 years (which really dates this phenomenon), my posts, no matter how well received they've been amongst people I've talked to about them directly, I still go into the notes and at least half (often more than half) are MY reblogs to make sure people saw what I posted. and it happens every single time, and I can't tell you how much it crushes me considering that it used to be that I would be able to post it only once, and people would reblog it sometimes even HUNDREDS of times.
It's not about popularity. it never has been. it's not about anxiety. or shifting website cultures. even if you lurk, the simple fact is, that if you want people to keep making what you love. you have to reblog. your theme won't suffer because you reblogged a fanfiction that you really admire. your posting won't be ruined because you reblogged some fanart from someone in a different fandom. really. I promise. and if people do unfollow you for that? who needs em. followers come and go but you should NEVER have to cater to them. on this website it has ALWAYS been the other way around. lean into it. make it yours. put stuff you ACTUALLY WANT to be seen and that you love and appreciate on your blog. no matter how old it is, how new it is, no matter how niche or off-theme it is.
so please. if you really want to show your appreciation for someone's work? you reblog. it's really as easy as that. check the tags. add some when you reblog if you like. but please for the love of god reblog. it's as easy as booping and even more rewarding for the people who you reblog from. if you want to let someone know that their work is genius and appreciate it? show it. reblog. then DM them if you're too nervous to say what you want to say but not in a public forum. but for christ's sake. REBLOG.

Idk if this is a hot take of any kind but I actually really like that Astarion's romance starts off in an unhealthy way and evolves. That's like ... the point? Ya know?
It's interesting. It adds layers and conflict. It allows for growth and evolution. And Larian have claimed multiple times that it was on purpose, that many video game romances have sex as the culmination while here, some characters will fuck you immediately but then what? What happens after? Sex isn't the reward, but part of the relationship. There is more beyond. But people think that there being stuff beyond sex means that that's the only value that exists, and that the sex adds nothing. But in Astarion's case, it's extremely important?
It's complicated. His relationship with sex is complicated. They did it on purpose. That's the point. So what if it's not "uwu soft trust me I don't want sex please let's just hold hands" from the start? He doesn't trust the PC from the start, so why the fuck would he agree to that? He doesn't know them at all. He needs to do things his way because he's not ready for anything else yet. And if you feel sad for him, that's fine, because it's meant to be sad? But to the point of it becoming anger at the people who wrote it? That's weird, man. Astarion isn't real, you're not hurting a real person, and he literally asks Tav for it? In my case, he asks them twice before they say yes. They're not forcing him into anything. The only time you can force him is after the Araj scene, and he immediately breaks up with you after. So he's clearly perfectly capable of ending things if they get too toxic.
I swom to Jon just romance someone else at that point. Idk if this is my romance writer brain talking but well-written, not contrived, and non-abusive conflict is actually rare and sometimes difficult to write, but IMO every good romance needs conflict. Because at the end of the day, it's also a story?
It's not perfect because it's not meant to be. It's meant to be a starting point to evolve from. Sometimes things can be unhealthy without being abusive or problematic TM.
Anyway. Yeah I like how fucked up it is. Because Astarion is fucked up. It makes it more real and more compelling. I made my Tav fucked up to match.
"Well my Tav wouldn't fall for it and would realize ...!" Roleplay harder. Clearly Tav/Durge aren't meant to pick up on his manipulations from the start, or overlook them, or fall for them. There's a bajillion different ways to justify it. If you can't see past your own meta knowledge, romance someone else.
But if you really want the relationship to start without sex then just write that fic? Why are you demanding that Larian caters to your specific tastes and sensibilities? They had a story to tell and they told it. You not liking it is neither a personal a slight against you nor their problem.

,,i love spencer so so much“
And then why are you writing him as allistic when he is canon autistic?
smells like projecting and ableism to me
🚨PSA to Fellow Writers and Readers🚨
So this lovely anon decided to drop by and accuse me of ableism for not writing Spencer Reid as “canonically autistic.” Because apparently, they have the authority to police how—not just me, but @aliteralsemicolon who also had the pleasure of dealing with this—portray a fictional character.
In case anyone needs a reminder, Spencer isn’t explicitly labeled autistic in the show. That means there’s room for multiple interpretations of his character. You want to write him as autistic? Go for it. But the moment you decide to hide behind anonymity to attack other writers for not meeting your standards? That's when you cross the line. It's disrespectful. Because here’s the thing—fanfiction is supposed to be a creative, open space where we can explore characters in any number of ways, including sex.
And since we’re on the topic, I genuinely want to understand, does the suggestion of him having kinks conflict with an autistic headcanon? From what I know (and I’m open to being corrected), autistic people are just as capable of having kinks and varied sexual interests as anyone else. I think making such assumptions about an entire group of people does more harm than good and erases the spectrum of experiences that real autistic individuals have.
Does that not sound like ableism?
With that being said, let me remind this to all writers: write what you want, how you want. No interpretation is more “correct” than another, and you are not obligated to cater to anyone’s guidelines. If you come across an anonymous comment like the one above or like these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or the one @aliteralsemicolon received:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
where they start out respectful ("Not to be rude", "no offence", etc) and, it seems whether you ignore or answer, they will continue sending asks that get more offensive and hateful…
Do yourself a favor. Block. Delete.
And to all the anon critics out there, if you don’t like what someone writes, here’s a simple solution—write your own fic. Or don’t. Just don’t harass other writers because their vision doesn’t align with yours.
✨Be the change you want to see✨

I've had this in my drafts for months, and I just saw a post complaining about fan artists (while having the nerve to start out with, "I love fan artists so much but...") who draw characters this way or don't draw them that way, so I figured it was about time to share this.
You know that unwritten rule in fandom that says you shouldn't demand that fic writers cater to your tastes? "Don't like, don't read"? Here's a reminder that the same goes for fanart.
Sometimes, I see complaints that fan artists don't draw character A exactly how they look in canon/in a particular slice of canon/according to someone's specific headcanons. Sometimes, I see complaints that character A is being depicted, say, without enough body hair, or with the wrong body type, or as a different age than they appear in canon.
If you find yourself getting upset with fan artists over things like this, I hope you'll take a moment to:
mind your own business
consider how fucking hard art is
I think a lot of people who haven't spent time in the art trenches have absolutely no clue how difficult it can be to draw a human, period—let alone human features you haven't already practiced a million times.
This can be especially true for artists who don't have a lot of drawing experience. When I was a kid, I mostly drew women, so learning to draw more typically masculine features was a challenge, and it took me many years to even get okay at it. It takes a lot of practice to figure out how to draw a variety of facial structures, body types, hair styles, ages, etc.
For a example, I have never known an artist who doesn't think drawing children is a bitch and a half, and wrinkle placement can mean the difference between drawing something that looks like an elderly human versus a shriveled apple.
Simply drawing body hair can be very time consuming. You also have to understand hair growth patterns and direction and take into account if the person's body hair is very curly or more straight, etc. If I just want to do a really quick sketch, maybe I don't feel like spending 10-20 minutes adding body hair. Maybe some people don't like body hair so they don't want to draw it. Maybe some people have carpal tunnel syndrome or medial epicondylitis and the extremely repetitive motion of adding body hair to characters is physically painful. You don't know. And it's not your place to tell them they're wrong.
Fanart, just like fanfiction, is about drawing the things we like—NOT catering to what other people want or think we should be making.
So feel free to talk about how much you love it when fan artists draw characters in ways you like! But don't be a jerk by demanding people draw what you want, and don't put down those who don't cater to you. You can have all the personal preferences you want in fanart, but it's rude and entitled to force those preferences on others fans or act like you're a better person because of your tastes in the appearances of fictional characters.

Fanfiction Comments: Why Bother?
Genuine question: If ya’ll like a story, why not comment?
This question, born out of previous discussions and Discord chats, is one writers have been dealing with for a long time. Feedback/reblogs on art tends to be more common than on fics. Yet writers continue to beg for comments on stories. So what's stopping people?
Don't know what to say/an emoji/script feels too impersonal
Forgot to comment
Read everything and how do you pick out one part?
Rather give feedback personally
Feels like an expectation/I owe them
Send me a string of emojis? I love it. Send a single heart? I love it. Keyboard smash? I love it. Copy/paste a "thank you for writing"? I still love it. "I don't know what to comment or how to put my feelings into words." Then put that! That's a compliment! Can't think of anything to say, then "I don't know what to write but asgfdhgf I liked it." is fine!
Seriously, I don't care WHAT you put, because it shows me you cared enough to take a few second to show that love. I recognize and look for my regular commenters, even the ones who leave just a heart or "extra kudos".
Forgot to comment? Leave the fic open on your phone or get in the habit of dropping SOMETHING right as you finish. If you had time to make it through the last 100 words, you can probably tap an emoji. It's likely more of a habit to build up than anything.
Read it in one go and it's all a blur? "I read this all in one go and it's a blur, but I loved it!" We don't need specifics; just tell us you loved it on the chapter you stopped on. That in itself is a compliment because Hey! You loved it so much you had to keep reading!
Personal feedback? Well, I'll never say no to friends gushing about stories to me! And it might not be the same for everyone, but if you stop commenting on AO3 and only tell me personally...my assumption is you don't like it enough to say it publicly. I've spent many a time wondering why people stopped giving that support and what I should do better. If it's a friend, try asking them which they prefer! We can go back and reread (and do!) AO3 comments. Much harder on discord/dms/etc.
Owing authors? Look, we put a lot of time and work into writing and providing content for free. Hours of idea planning, actual writing, editing, catering to requests, etc. My partner once said I have a second job, writing, but I don't get paid. If you read and enjoyed something that someone put a lot of work into, it's nice to take a few seconds and tell them that.
You don't owe authors comments. They also don't owe you free writing. Sometimes, you forget there is an author at all when you're reading. But there is. A real person put out a story hoping you'd love it, or connect to it. You'd see yourself in the writing and feel less alone, or cheered up when you have a bad day.
Writing is art, and all we want to do is connect with you. Comments help bridge that gap.

Something I've noticed is that no matter what fandom or community we are in—black people will always always have to make a safe space for ourselves. Every single fandom I was in there were always black people being treated badly by white people and nonblacks and everytime we spoke on it we are told that we are either making it up or causing problems/discourse.
Even in the LGBTQ+ community where niggas preach about being sooo accepting we have to make *our own flags and spaces because we get talked over and forgotten so damn much. You look up queer related stuff and white people show up first (try the trans selfie tag or look up androgynous stuff on pinterest.) You look up queer shows and it's only white people with a black side character or a white person x a black person like we can't exist on our own. White queers calling black people cops for being uncomfortable with certain labels.
Even with fictional black characters they get the same treatment. Marina from Splatoon 2 and Hobie Brown from Spiderman both are victims of nonblack people hypersexualizing them and masculinizing them. Xinyan from Genshin Impact is a complete and utter stereotype of black people—being seen as aggressive and mean and a literal theft. Don't get me started on how yall whitewash the fuck outta them. It's either sexualize them, whitewash them or forget about them completely.
For some reason white people are seen as more aesthetically pleasing compared to Black people and when we look up aesthetics we literally have to type in "black person x aesthetic" or afro punk or afro goth despite us being the creators of some of these aesthetics. Same with cosplaying, white peoples cosplays are seen as more "canon" compared to black people or even people who's race is literally the character being cosplayed.
Fanfiction writers constantly cater to white people despite trying to market their stuff as "inclusive" while black people get shitted on for making character x black reader fics and don't you know weird ass white people still read them??
Yall tell us to make our own things instead of "complaining" about it and we do, then we get hit with death threats and hate. We make our black edits and get told that it's "blackwashing" and the artists get called the n word, we make black movies and our actors get death threats. We make our own original black art with our black OC'S and get told that we're being selfish and "racist" for not drawing other people. We literally cannot exist without you people hating on us and unnecessarily critiquing us.
[Note: If you nonblack or white niggas come up here and being like "well acschually op🤓☝🏾" I will actually hurt you. If you ask "why is this in the x tag" I will hurt you as well. You try n derail and make it about a different race I'm hurting you.]

hello with kinktober starting i have a question and as a writer i'm hoping you can answer it. why do so many writers write kinky smut and not as much "vanilla" stuff. some of us don't have all these aren't into kink culture and just want normal and regular sex. it's so ooc for Spencer especially. i can't imagine him as anything other than vanilla or a SOFT dom. the softest version. it's such a turn off when your trying to find a good fic to read and then it's just all these nasty descriptions, even in the tags. i also find it hard to believe that writers don't know about this. because there are definitely other readers and writers who've talked about this. their quite well-known blogs in the fandom too. so why don't writers cater to that audience too? this is all no offense btw. idm if people have all their kinks, to each their own, but why is there so much and why is it so in your face?
Read this very carefully because this is the only time I'm going address you and then I'm going to go back to blocking you and anons like you. I don't know if you're one person or some weird little group. I don't know which fucking hole you've sprouted from, but I urge you to crawl back into it. It's extremely entitled of you to waltz into my inbox, spew whatever fuckassery you want and think you can get away with a small "no offence 😊" at the end.
The empath in me is sensing that you're just looking for a fight, but incase you're really here with innocent intentions I'm going to make you aware of this. Also news flash: writing is a hobby!! None of us get paid to do this. Hobbies are self indulgent. My writing is not catered to please the general public. I write it for myself and other's who are into the same thing as me. Not you. This is my blog. You may want vanilla, but I am a nasty whore. I don't know what to tell you.
If you really hate the content you're seeing so much, stop engaging with it. If you're frustrated with the lack of content catering to your preference, GET TO WORK!!!!! Become a writer yourself. This is also to that one weirdo who keeps crying ableism if Spencer isn't exactly as you perceive him. You are blocked by me but for the love of whatever the fuck you believe in: stop harassing writers. We don't give a shit about what you think is the correct way to portray Spencer and all you're doing is wasting everyone's time.
This is not an invite for you to come back into my inbox with more useless input. This is not an invite for you to go harass other writers. Anything after this and you will continue to be blocked and ignored.
ETA: "crying ableism" = crying wolf. don't even start that with me.
