HTP Fic Recs: Hidden Gems

Have you, like me, devoured everything in the Hydra Trash Party AO3 tag and are desperate for more? Well you may be in luck.

In honor of CATWS's 10th anniversary I’ve decided, yet again, to make a new rec list so that these gems don't get buried in my overwhelmingly extensive original rec list. This list features HTP and HTP-adjacent fics that are NOT tagged as HTP (either because the author didn't know the label existed or didn't believe it applied to their fic), making them particularly hard to find, and I think, deserving of more attention.

Many of these fics don’t have much, if any, explicit noncon, but noncon is often implied or referenced and they’re all rife with other types of dehumanization and abuse so the usual HTP warnings still apply. Read tags carefully etc.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY @facewithoutheart! I didn't actually plan this, but I drew this picture over the weekend because I loved your fanfic and that imagery completely stuck with me. And then WHAT it's your BIRTHDAY? How cool is THAT? So I dressed it up a bit and now it's a birthday gift! XD

This is a bit of fanart for a scene in the last chapter of "Boulders Turn Into Sand," which you should immediately go read right now if you haven't already. I waited until it was finished to read it all (I'm delicate sometimes *ahem*) and getting to read it straight through was such a treat!

This bit of imagery from the last chapter really stuck with me, so I knew I had to draw it. (Actually, @facewithoutheart posted this snippet on a wipsday I think, and it's what made me hop over to AO3 and get reading in the first place.) I just adore Simon and Baz in this. The whole thing, I mean. But also this scene. <3

(I let it go.) “That you love me.” “Of course I love you.” Simon kicks another rock. “You know I love you.” He shrugs. “Simon.” I thread my fingers through his and oh. The blush that blooms over his cheeks makes his freckles stand out like sunlight glinting off precious gems. “I love you.” Using his other hand, he pulls up the collar to hide his chin and mouth, stretching out the fabric irrevocably. No one else will ever be able to wear it. (I can still see his blush.) Good. “Does it help to hear it, love?” His nose rubs against the cotton blend when he nods. “I’ll say it, then. Every day.” “Maybe,” the words come out muffled through the fabric covering his mouth, “maybe a couple times a day.” Finally, he pulls the collar back under his chin, making these next words come out clear. “Just until I’m used to it.”

January Under 1000 Fic Rec!

@flightfoot has been doing some great end of year rec lists for you to check out and it got me considering what I could do to be better about reccing fics, which lead to this idea! Every month this year, I'll rec a miraculous fic with under 1000 kudos. Why 1000? Because I think that a lot of people (understandably) focus on reading the popular stuff, leading to many a great fic getting lost in the pile. In the Miraculous fandom, you have to go over 100 pages into the work list to fall below 1000 kudos, so it seemed like a reasonable cutoff, though most of these fics will be much lower than that.

Feel free to play along and tag me if you do so I can reblog your recs! If you want to do this for another fandom, be sure to calibrate your kudo limit! Miraculous is a huge one, so I set my limit way higher than I would have in other fandoms.

Binderary book #2! A bind of a very short fic, moments lost, moments gained by @commodorecliche and Dervila. I asked permission to bind this way back in December, but with the holidays and moving apartments in January it got pushed back till now. I'm glad it's finally done. It's a great little fic (little for this kind of binding, I should say; it's actually 12k words), though a little angsty and bittersweet. Good Omens fandom, but that should no longer come as a surprise to anyone who knows me, lol. Pics and process below the cut!

Top view and endpapers. Feathers are from the same sheet as the ones from In Death's Embrace, which I posted last week. The visual elements of this book were assembled entirely with things I already had. The gray cover paper is some kind of drawing paper that I bought for another project that only used a small amount, and the blue book cloth was a scrap from when I bound The God Below. Even the ribbon was something I already had; I think it's one of those loops you find in shirts sometimes. I could make a thematic point here about finding new life and purpose in an unintended role, which would be appropriate to the story, but really I just had them on hand and thought they were pretty together. And I was right.

Spot the mistake! When I first did the cover I was proudly showing it to people and then started swearing because I realized I'd forgotten the comma. Fortunately that was fixable but it was a pain to break out the embossing stuff and heat gun all over again just to add the damned measly little comma. The embossing powder didn't work as well on this cover as it has in the past, and I think it's the paper. Since it's drawing paper I think it absorbs ink better than the scrapbook paper and cardstock I usually use it with, so the lines came out more sketch-like and less neat than I expected. I don't think I'd like it for every book but I do like it for this one.

It is also my first time doing those little corner bits (I think this is called a half binding? Google results were inconclusive). They were a last-minute impulse decision and made from a fairly small scrap of book cloth, and I'm pretty happy with how they came out, despite:

You aren't supposed to be able to see the pointy bit XD A couple of them are like this on the inside. On the bright side, now I know better how to cut the pieces so they don't do that in future.

I'm scheduling this to post ahead of time (date of writing: 2/13) so I don't flood anyone's dash with books and fic recs, but what that means is that by the time this goes up I may have another one ready to go. Binderary was a good idea for productivity!

Like wait you're putting it in someone's "rec me a fic pls" twitter threads? Hold on a minute my fics are no longer just the ramblings in my head? Wait?
