Huh! I can't play Puzzle Pop myself so my friend is going to stream it to me tomorrow! Now I'm terrified!

Let's just say it like this: My cycle of friends has taken to lovingly calling this game "Fever 3", and believe me, it's not just because the item system from Fever 2 is back.

It seriously feels like everything these past 15 years - the other games, the novels, the drama CDs, parts of quest, EVERYTHING - was building up to what happens in this game's story. It's mind-boggling and even just the character bios (which are in the game again and even more extensive than they were in Fever2) make me question a LOT I thought I knew about especially the Primp Town characters.

Overall, Sega Puyo is really good!!! It has a notably different flavor from the Compile Era,but is a lot more consistent with its lore. Past events are brought up more frequently, there's ongoing story threats and a pretty robust system on how dimension jumping works...

I'd recommend Fever2, the most lore heavy game, to start with,but it doesn't have a completed translation patch yet... otherwise the drama CDs and novels (much of which are fully translated) give a great impression of the world and characters too. The novel "Sig's Secret", for which I've done an annotated translation, is especially good and its climactic chapters are very Madou-esque, featuring an extended dungeon crawling section. As for the gameplay: it's puyo!!! If you enjoyed the gameplay of compile puyo, you'll enjoy Sega puyo. It's more refined in a lot of ways (better, more precise controls),and the Fever ruleset Sega added basically turns the experience into more of a Fighting game, but Puyo is Puyo~

Weird evening thought:

Feeling a bit out of place being into Sorcery Saga/Madou Monogatari but essentially having only ever touched a Puyo Puyo game maybe like once or twice and only knowing like a few of the post-Compile characters and almost no post-Compile lore.

Can anyone tell me how good Puyo Puyo is in general, specifically post-Compile/Sorcery Saga era and/or in regards to the gameplay? (As someone who's only ever played Tetris and a bit of Dr. Mario and Panel De Pon!)

I feel even just going back to the Fever 2 style of manzai with slight movements, full body, if static sprites and having more than two characters on screen, would help a little bit. Something just needs to happen, because as much as PPT2 tries to frame it as the extended cast contributing and being needed, them being cut out of the story so frequently, while the protags do all the important things as usual, consistently undermines the idea, like they don't even get a proper send-off.

I think that also has to do just with how huge the cast has grown by now. There is a reason Quest made sure to have individual arcs focus on different groups of characters. Tet2 trying to go "everyone is here!!" was really climactic imho, but in the future splitting the cast up into a few parallel stories again, like in Fever 2, would probably be the better approach. That said, it's a fact that during the climax, some characters will ALWAYS fall to the wayside. I have yet to see a series with a massive cast avoid this issue. Friendly reminder that the entire Radiant Garden cast of Kingdom Hearts barely even exists for the entire duration of Kingdom Hearts 3.

On the matter of the manzai style though, yes, Fever 2's style of animated manzai really was super nice. I wish they could go back to that. They tried to bring some of that back starting 20th with emotes and animations on the sprites themselves, but we have get to get back to how flexible the animation engine for cutscenes was in Fever2.

Puyoque anniversaries have been themed after console game and this year it was puyochron, released in 2016, the last game that isn't weird block spin off. What the hell is puyoque gonna do next year? They literally ran out of main puyo games
