I was today years old when I found out about “micro ferrets” and people willing to inbreed and sacrifice ferrets’ health for “cuteness” and I rage.

This is a pretty big deal. When I was a kid in the 1980s, this was one of the most endangered species in the world. It had been declared extinct in 1979, but two years later a small population was discovered in Wyoming. These became the basis for a breeding and reintroduction program, and today there are a few hundred in the wild with more in captive breeding programs.

The challenge with working with such a small captive population is that you only have so many adult female ferrets that can be having kits at any given time. While cloning is more resource-intensive than simply raising a ferret born in captivity, it adds another individual to the breeding pool. If cloning can be streamlined, it could help increase the number of breeding adult ferrets more quickly than through natural means alone.

In this case, one of the first cloned black-footed ferrets has not only made it to adulthood but has successfully given birth to two kits which wouldn't have existed otherwise. Because she was cloned from the cells of a ferret that died in the 1980s, she was able to reintroduce genetic diversity in a species that has suffered a severe population bottleneck. While it remains to be seen whether the kits survive to adulthood--a challenge any young ferret faces--this is a very promising sign.

We can't rely on cloning alone to save this species, though. The systematic destruction of prairie habitats for agriculture and other development, the subsequent loss of prey populations, the introduction of canine distemper from domestic dogs, and secondary poisoning from poisoned prairie dogs and other prey, all have contributed to the precipitous decline of this charismatic little mustelid. By preserving and restoring prairie habitats and their biodiversity, preventing the poisoning of prey, and controlling canine distemper vectors, we can give both birthed and cloned black-footed ferrets a better chance of reestablishing their species in their historic range.

Wilderness Costume Analysis: Part 3

The Butcher (The term Marie Schley and the costume department used).

They are seen with the Buck hunting knife which they then use to drain Pit Girls blood (the reason why the costume department called them the butcher).

This Acolyte wears a clear pink rain coat underneath a fur cloak/coat and dress as well as a face covering. It also looks like they have a light fabric pant or leg warmer on underneath as well.

Marie Schley said they decided to have the Butcher wear a rain coat because of the the acolyte’s occupation. When they were coming up with ways the survivors would utilize their limited clothing, they thought that the rain coat would be useful to keep blood from getting on the person’s outfit.

I think the fact that they called the Acolyte a “butcher” is interesting because that term is used quite a bit in association with Shauna. Plus, as of right now, Shauna seems to be the only one who bleeds the animals/people and prepares the meat so I think there’s a a solid foundation that suggests the “butcher” might be Shauna.

These two Acolytes have woven fabric/fur shirts and Marie Schley said the costume department had the idea that the survivors knew how to weave from the woven potholder/coaster trend and thought they would use the resources they had to help create warmer clothes. (The photo on the right is an example of the style of woven potholders).

They also wear makeshift gloves, face coverings, and long sleeve shirts under the woven furs. Their animals appear to be a ferret(?) and a raccoon. The one with the raccoon hood seems to be wearing a floral skirt whereas the ferret looks to be wearing blue patterned pants.

The Bunny

According to Marie Schley the bunny mask was actually made last minute as the other mask they had made didn’t work out. I think she elaborated more on it in the interview but I can’t find my notes about it right now. It looks to me like the mask is made out of tights.

The Bunny appears to be wearing a soccer jersey under what I believe to be a soccer goalie uniform and a fur cloak/coat. They also have makeshift gloves and leg warmers like the other Acolytes. In the group photo at the beginning of the post I think they are seen wearing soccer shorts over their pants though I am not sure.

After a long day of y/n helping their kingdom, chatting with everyone (and running away from BS hugs), they sit down with cream ferret at rhe table and talk

CF: so how was your day kid?

Y/n: well, I just helped around with resources, checked in on mystics rehabilitation progress and had hide golden cheese from bunring spice a few times.

Y/n: speaking of the two beasts, I have mixed opinions, mystic seems to be bettering herself, while I have to keep an eye on burning spice. Plus with cloud haetae, I had to pry blackberry from killing him after he said a mean word to onion cookie. And I have no opinion on nutmeg tiger, tho I notice she follows me around like haetae does but from a far.

CF: didn't you meet another of those beasts?

Y/n sighs: yeah, shadow milk....but he's more of an annoyance than anything, plus he's not even roaming anyways he's still trapped in that laboratory me and wind archer found.
