I hear that you take music-related questions today, Sir.
Do you have anything to narrate on the actual art of giving a piano performance?
I believe you were well-known for being striking and memorable in that sense. Do you have any tips, therefore, on leaving a confident and memorable performance?
My dear pupil, you have answered to the right call!
I would like for this diary... Correspondance... Spot, of mine, to be of use for pupils and musicians alike far more than it is today. Thus music related questions are always more than welcome!
On the topic of performing a whole world must be said, and a great part of it cannot be put into words - I would have to show you or let you hear. Alas as it is famously impossible, if not for momentary happenings in your dreams or imagination, let us try.
Impress upon yourself that a performance is not a display of something. Performing is not fixing up a nice painting on the wall. Start a dialogue. Your playing means nothing if you play for yourself and do not care for the audience: it also means nothing if they do not listen. Of course you cannot rewire their brains, but you can and must try to summon up all those elements that make up a social conversation. Picture yourself as talking to your audience - without words. Do it in the fashion that satisfies you most. My own way of engaging people was through glances and talking with them during breaks. You can do whatever you like. The audience is there for you. It will forgive your mistakes if you walk confidently through them and are well-prepared. Give it respect and it will give back. Want from yourself what you would want expect from your favourite artist. Be confident, respectful and, most of all; EXPRESSIVE. Do not hold back! Be generous, loud if needed, soft when necessary, cry if you need to, sing if it helps you, take your time and always trust yourself. Remind yourself of two specific members of the audience that partecipate at every concert: one that dislikes your performance no matter how perfect, and one that loves your performance no matter how flawed.
Less highfalutin tips would be those related to our own anatomy. The human body and brain is not that different from that of any other animal and performers always are athletes, thus: know your body - take care of it, be hydrated, warm up your hands and body carefully; work on your image: not tied to any specific concern on your appearance, but be clean and strive to be attractive on your own terms so that you feel most confident - it is a matter of gestures, look and manners; clean the keyboard or ask someone else to do that for you; relax your breathing before the concert and do not communicate anxieties to your audience.
Be at ease. Study a lot and have fun! I will always be here to hold you by the shoulders, watch over your performance and be proud of your progress. No music is ever useless and all musicians deserve to be listened to.

W 1846 roku do Warszawy przybywa Ferenc Liszt.
Słuchanie Liszta nosi znamiona rite de passage, śmierci niewinności (nawiązanie do Goethe i "Króla Olch"). Wszak swoboda i światło w czasie zaborów to grzech...
"Cześc ci władzco, mocarzu
Na harmonii państwem wtajemniczen,
[...]
Olch stary król wychyla białe skronie,
[...]
Cześć ci, ogniem piekła ziejący,
Burzą, trwogą, grozą grzmiący,
Szalony i dziki
Szatanie muzyki"
"Poezja... i studia, szkice, interpretacje" polecam jedynie jako formę ćwiczeń z krytyki
Thx Elka Łapczyńska i Grzegorz Marcinkowski

These photographs belong to the film "Rêve d'amour" from 1934, starring Claudio Arrau as Liszt.
I'm genuinely tweaking, he looks WAY TOO MUCH like him, he's adorable (mf kissed 3 women in less than 10 minutes).
I'll put the film link in the comments.

Obsessed with this Hungarian Liszt biopic that has NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES. Which is driving me insane because I HAVE to see this. The actor who plays Liszt looks really good, his name is Hegedűs D. Géza.
Brb, learning Hungarian really fast so I can watch it. (Or if anyone has ANY idea if someone translated this series, let me know :))
