Remember what I said about how much more opulent Orlais looks compared to Fereldan?
Denerim (Fereldan)
Tumblr media
Val Royeaux (Orlais)
Tumblr media
And now Minrathous (Tevinter Imperium)
Tumblr media
Is it any wonder the Vints always refer to the south as a barbaric place if this is what their capital looks like?
And this is Minrathous after a thousand years of decline. Imagine what the Imperium must have looked like in its prime. Imagine what Arlathan must have looked like!
This is the kind of heavy lore that makes me love Dragon Age.

Amell is always described as being an edgy, strong- jaw-line, conventionally attractive, action orientated mage in the dragon age tag.
Counterpoint: He/She/They is a skinny and scrawny bean who prefers to read and study indoors. By the age of 10, they have read each book in the circle three times. As lifelong scholars, they have a hyper-fixation of all things magic and are desperate to learn new forms of magic (that's not blood-related). And at the slightest provocation, will talk nonstop about theories about some obscure magical property for hours

Harding: "What do you do when the authorities can't be trusted to do the right thing?"
Harding. Girl. You grew up in Fereldan during the fifth blight.

Saw someone refer to Fereldan as Fantasy Ohio and as an Ohioan it's so accurate it hurts

The heir to Ferelden is not a Child named Duncan but a baby Gryphon like.😂✋
You go to what is supposed to be a meeting with the royals and you just see a Gryphon and a Mabari cuddling in the hallway

It never occurred to me until recently just how different Orlais and Fereldan are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left is the market district in Denerim, capital of Fereldan. The right is the market district of Val Royeaux, capital of Orlais. See the difference?
One is made of dirt, wood, and brick while the other is almost entirely marble (I'm guessing). Orlais must be far wealthier than Fereldan as a country which kind of makes it understandable why everyone refers to Fereldans as barbarians.

RPG-Session we're gonna have tomorrow probably will be one of the last ones - if not the last one - we're gonna have in this old constellation and with our old characters. With that one we are getting to an end of a campaign that is almost older even than my son.
That I managed to get these two eventually become a thing probably was one of the biggest wins to me that I got in this campaign. <33
Once again I managed to make sure there will be no fracking timeline in Thedas where Dorian Pavus has to end up alone. And this time even I can make sure his partner's gonna stay by his side even by the point where he has to start his Magister career. For there is no way in hell, Sharles would voluntarily leave his side. And thankfully he has neither the horns nor the glowy hand that Dorian could use as an excuse to tell him to stay away. >__<

I think it’s extremely out of character and lazy writing. They essentially said: Diplomat likes diplomatic option. Spy likes espionage and sabotage. Warrior likes Warrior. Which - I suppose you could sum up the entire game with the advisors that way, but I don’t think it makes sense at all. Templar education and brainwashing teaches history, religion, politics - maybe something about cultures they run into, even if it’s taught crappily.  Hell, some of his damn trainers could have fought against the Orlesians, and no doubt would have taught their recruits about the conflict.  Cullen also loves Fereldan; like you said, he’s devoted and views himself as a Fereldan fish out of water sort, and it's one of the reasons why he’s so excited to see a Malbari in the markets of Orlais. He also has family there that you can encourage him to reconnect with, and I don’t think he’d say “Ah, yes, Let’s throw people like my siblings, my nephew and thousands of other innocents to invaders that I have fought to protect my entire life.”  He says multiple times how much he hates everything about Orlais. I agree it may make sense if Cullen considered the troops in the short term, but I don’t believe he’s stupid enough to believe there wouldn’t be a fallout/threat of invasion later - especially if others like Leliana mention it. (Which I can’t recall.)  This is far from the first time the writers have been lazy with Cullen. Yes, he has had different writers for each game, but this still includes sloppy writing in the same game. If he ever makes another appearance, which I severely doubt he would outside of a letter,  I don't know how the writers will handle it. Hell, they sometimes severely struggled with Alistair, for example. Dragon Age has a lot of decent writing, but there are definitely moments like this that are weird to me.
Edit: I forgot to mention that he talks about Fereldan several times in his romance. Ex: He takes you to the lake that he grew up visiting and speaks fondly of his family. He speaks humbly about his origins but has definitely mentioned homesickness. He even talks about potentially visiting Fereldan - more specifically, his family in Fereldan - in the DLC. He's also called the Lion of Fereldan, so there is a small source of pride there.
It surprises me that Cullen favors Gaspard over Celene. I know the characterization they favor for Cullen in Inquisition is that he's a bit of a blunt instrument tactically, which, fair, but he's also Fereldan (his design in Inquisition even speaks to his national identity, with the furs over his breastplate), and Gaspard is an expansionist, and I didn't think it took a whole lot of reading between the lines to understand that he will totally re-invade Ferelden if he thinks he can win. But maybe Cullen just sees the need for Orlais as a strong military ally in the present as overriding that concern, I don't know.
