BREAKING NEWS: Court to hear application stopping Fubara’s COS’ arrest March 4
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday adjourned hearing on an application to set aside the arrest warrant against the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Edison Ehie, and five others over their alleged involvement in the burning of the state’s House of Assembly. Justice Emeka Nwite had on January 31, 2024, issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ehie, Jinjiri Bala, Happy Benedict, Progress Joseph, Adokiye Oyagiri, and Chibuike Peter also known as Rambo following an ex-parte application by the Inspector General of Police which was predicated on Sections 37, 113, 114, 84, and 184 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution as well as Section 32 of the Police Act 2020. The IGP’s lawyer, Simon Lough, told the court that the six defendants needed to be arrested to defend charges against them, including alleged terrorism and attempted murder and murder of a Superintendent of Police, SP Bako Agbashim, and five police informants. The police had in the seven charges preferred against them, accused the defendants of committing alleged terrorism offences by invading, vandalising, and burning down Rivers State House of Assembly in the wake of the political crisis that rocked Port Harcourt in October 2023. However, Ehie and other defendants’ counsel, Femi Falana, (SAN) and Oluwole Aladedoye, filed separate applications asking the court to set aside the arrest warrant as well as restrain the police from carrying out the order pending the determination of the case. Falana maintained that the IGP had not filed any criminal charge or motion before seeking the arrest of his client. He said, “The complainant/respondent did not adduce evidence of terrorism in the affidavit supporting the application. “The complainant/respondent did not cite any section of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2013 (as amended) alleged to have been contravened by the applicants.” Aladedoye, argued that a notice of appeal had been filed against the trial court orders, hence, the need for the police to be restrained. At the resumed hearing, Simon Lough told the judge he was not aware of the defendant’s motion. But Nwite noted that from the court’s records, he could see the motion had been served on him. Lough then pleaded for time to react to the defendants’ applications. Subsequently, the judge adjourned till March 4 for the hearing of the application. Read the full article

Counter-protesting ftw, drag their racist asses:
"Anti-racist protester Lucas Ward left Castle Park [Bristol] and linked arms with others in front of the [Mercure Hotel on Redcliffe Hill] when they heard protesters might go there. "We got word the far-right protesters were going to come to this hotel because they heard they've got migrants and some asylum seekers here. "We came here to protect it. And it's a good thing we did because we got here just before the far-right did, before the police did, and if we weren't here they [the far-right protesters, not the police] 'd have tried to storm the hotel. "They [the far-right protesters, not the police] tried to barricade and force their way through us," he said.
(from this article)
See also this piece calling out Farage and his BS:
And this one:
Btw, non UK users here, would be genuinely super helpful if you could boost posts relating to the far right violence happening and also counter protests. A lot of UK users don’t really follow each other, and also it just helps to increase the chance of people who could go to counter protests seeing posts about what’s happening when. I know posts about our politics; and non USAmerican politics really; don’t get a lot of traction on here, but like despite the UScentrism of the English speaking user base it’s really helpful and beneficial to share these things. The situation is likely downright horrifying to those being targeted right now and it really should be a priority for us to go out and counter this to the best of our abilities

It’s long passed due for a #PeoplesVote...Brexiters did not vote for this in 2016. Remainers have swelled in numbers as those who did vote to leave the EU join the fight to stay since learning the full truth of what Brexit really means. May is in well over her head: give the people the final say, or risk losing the United Kingdom when Ireland and Scotland vote to become independent in order to remain in the EU.

Someone said to me in a discussion about how the west is tending towards more authoritarian states that "no no no, Europe doesn't have dictatorships, only leaders" and I've been thinking about that a lot. People Western countries are often quick to point out authoritarianism and dictatorships in non-western countries and use it as a point of "look out how great our country is, we're democrat". But yet they fail to see or do see but deny when the policies Western governments are actively moving towards a more authoritarian regime.
I bring this up because of the new voters bill Westminster are trying to pass which would make an already undemocratic system even less so. And people who have called out the undemocratic nature of our electoral system are often such down (just look at any time Femi Oluwole tries to explain how the system actually works)
#rambles#I'm sure someone has already made this point#to clarify the person mentioned said what he said because he agrees with what I said not because he denies genuinely believes it#panda's post

While the pair continued to argue, viewers were still dumbfounded by the claims that Brexiteers including the former head of the CBI now believe they had never portrayed Brexit as the UK being better off. Many on Twitter referenced a BBC interview where the Brexiteer said jobs would not be lost because of Brexit. Jim Cornelius tweeted: “Digby Jones just said he always said we’d be economically worse off. Did he not say not a single job will be lost due to Brexit?” Sarah Ludford said: “The dishonesty of Brexiters summed up in one man, Digby Jones. 2016: ‘not one job is at risk from Brexit’. 2019: ‘I always said we’d be economically worse off from Brexit’. As it’s before 8am, I cannot express what I really think of this scoundrel.”
